Party Favors

My sister is a fun loving person and she enjoys throwing parties for the heck of it at anytime that she sees fit. Her parties always involved a lot of alcohol and drunken adults being stupid. I was only nineteen but didn't mind because she let me drink. I never drank enough to lose my control, so I was always able to laugh at all of them.

I had been invited to this one almost against my will, it's not that I didn't want to go; I just wasn't a fan of some of the idiots that would be there. As I got there I was helping my sister set up the food and things, working the stove like I knew what I was doing. It was about an hour into it that the door bell rang and my sister eagerly greeted her first guests. A woman who I knew from previous parties, a total drunk, and her husband walked in. They were being tailed by someone though, and I was trying to focus in on him, when they spread apart and introduced him.

"This is my son Chris." The man said. He couldn't have been seventeen but he was quiet and shy with curly brown hair that hung down to his cheeks. He had a soft face that was only punctuated by a softly sharp chin. His eyes were amber and had a twinkle in them that seemed to hold a mysterious power behind them. He wasn't tall and he seemed to hold himself back looking almost scared. He glanced around and I could read his expression almost easily, he wanted to escape from this. His head twisted slightly and his eyes locked on mine, randomly. I almost panicked but kept my eyes locked on his, and smiled. It was his turn to panic and he did, his eyes glistening for half a second and darted down.

That party slowly began to start and I was sitting on the sidelines observing, but it wasn't the drunks I was observing it was the boy, Chris. He was also looking incredibly awkward, hovering behind his parents and floating on the sides like me. It was when I caught him looking at me and I smiled, that he gaped at me confusedly.

He pulled off his jacket at one point and I saw that his shirt was a Graphic Tee of a game that I love to play. An online game that lets me slip into a fantasy world without the writing, which is my usual door way. I stood and moved to speak with another guest who also played, asking if I could borrow his lap top, so that I could let Chris play. He agreed and I moved down the hall way to set the computers up, and I rejoined the party when I was done.

"So Chris, you play that?" I said pointing to his shirt.

"Yea." He said blushing. His dad and mom turned to look at me as if to see if I was worthy of making the conversation. He was so quiet I expected more conversation.

"I have two computers available if you want to play, interested?" I smiled.

"Yes." He said very pointedly, and followed me to the back room. He glanced over his shoulder, and I noticed that his father was staring us down with an almost glare. I didn't understand it but I felt like they were staring at me, and the way I took him from the party. I didn't care, I knew what it was like to be young and surrounded by idiotic adults.

We spent the first hour or so playing this game, and I heard the party rising in laughter and yelling, which meant the alcohol was running true. It wasn't long to one of my least favorite party people tried to come and get me to start drinking. He usually made it his mission to get me drunk, I blatantly rejected him and tried to ignore him whilst playing the game, keeping Chris in my eyes so he didn't get offered anything. The drunk left and left me alone with him, again.

"Sorry about that, he usually tries to get me drunk, for no reason."

"Yea..." he laughed a little bit.

"So you don't talk much do you?" I asked bluntly.

"Nah...unless I'm really interested." He said.

"Oh..."

"Interested in what I'm talking about I mean." He looked up at me with a slightly blush in his tan cheeks.

"Oh, that's cool. So what are you into then?"

"I like this obviously, and I also skate, and read a little bit." I perked up at the thought of a shared interest. I questioned him more interestedly about the books he had read, and it turns out he read books like the ones I read, but he was interested in a series that I had strong distaste for, so we lost that common point then too.

"How old are you?" I asked, again randomly, but I was searching for a conversation.

"Seventeen. You?" His first question back.

"Nineteen."

"Only two years." I looked at him when he said this, and I let my mind wander, what the difference of two years could mean. He smiled back for half a second and dove back into his game. I went into mine as well and let my mind continue to wander. They were interrupted again by another person barging in. His father walked in, a short man, and kind of balding. He didn't smile, and smelled of alcohol. Chris clearly got his height from this man, neither were tall like me, but both seemed to have strong shoulders, as if they were handmade that way.

"What you guys doing." Chris had turned his computer in his lap so that his father couldn't really see it.

"Just talking and hanging out." I said coolly

"Oh really? You've been talking Chris?" It sounded like a cut, like he was trying to make a joke on him.

"No." He said low and quietly.

"No...No what?" He said menacingly.

"No Sir." He said to his lap.

"That's right you little..." He had raised his hand across his chest prepared to swing it toward Chris. I was standing before he had time to finish the statement, and as he swung his hand thumped against my chest hard. I ignored the fact that he had just slapped me and glared down at him. I was taller and so slightly more intimidating.

"I think you should return to the party." I said slowly.

"Get out of the way, you..." He started.

"I wouldn't finish that statement. I would return to the party if I were you." He looked up considering my threat and decided against saying anything else.

"I want another drink." He said and turned and stormed out of the room. I shut the door and sat back down, debating whether or not I wanted to say anything.

"Sorry he gets kind of cranky when he gets drunk." He looked at me blushing hard now, and I smiled at him. "Thanks."

I just continued to smile at him. I did not know whether or not I wanted to bring it up anymore, I felt like I wanted to comfort and console anything that may have happened, but I also wanted to give him a chance to confide in me only if he wanted to, or brush it under the carpet. He considered me for a moment and then turned back to his game, blushing even more then he had in the past few moments. I continued to play my game in silence and thinking over the moment.

We continued to play the evening away, and only chatting slightly here and there. We didn't bring up the conversation again and it was like a curtain had fallen between us, and I was itching to find out. I was intrigued my nature, people were what I want to work with and I loved trying to figure out the way their minds worked.

By the time I realized that the party was drawing to a slow end, we had spent the better part of five hours playing together, talking and attempting to get to know each other better. I had to admit that Chris was proving one of the most difficult people for me to get information out of and that is an impressive position coming from someone who had a reputation for wheedling the darkest secret out of the shyest person. There was something about Chris that just made me want to relax and smile with him, not at him, or for him, just with him. He had a very nice smile when he used it but sadly he didn't use it often enough.

As the guest started leaving I noticed that his parents were being slow to leave, they were sitting on the couch laughing randomly and nearly passed out. In my opinion it was a very pathetic sight, and I didn't like to think that Chris would be riding home with them.

"Are you driving home for them?" I asked warily.

"Doubt it; they don't let me drive often." I stood there gawking at him in disbelief.

As we packed the computers away, I slung my back pack over my shoulder and looked at him with a new reverence for my height in my eyes. I wanted to protect him for some unknown reason, it was as if this one was my brother and it was in my blood to protect him.

"What do you do on Sundays? Tomorrow?" I asked shortly.

"Nothing, my parent won't go to church."

"Do you want to come with me, you could spend the night with me if you'd like?" His eyes beamed at me as if I had just offered him a ton of money. He smiled his beautiful gleaming-eyed smile and nodded silently.

My sister was already asleep having partied well herself, and her husband I found snoozing on the couch. I guess I would have no backup on this one, not that their conscious selves would be much help if they were that drunk.

"Mom...dad..." he said tentatively more at them then to them. I held a hand out to stop him speaking.

"I hope you two enjoyed your evening, you may want to sleep it off here for your own safety." I said with as much maturity and as authoritative as I could. "However, my church is big with youth and I have invited Chris to come home with me so that I can take him to an event tomorrow. I hope this is okay, I would hate for him to miss it, it will be terribly educational and a most wonderful book study." I said, and realized exactly how pompous I could sound when I wanted to.

Chris almost gawked at me and then turned his eyes back on his parent expectantly. They looked up at me with their blood shot eyes, and it was my turn to appraise them. The mother seemed, even though drunk, sweet and caring. She smiled at me with a soft face and nodded gently. The father however had snapped his black eyes upon me and glared harshly.

"I assure you that it will be highly educational and that he won't be embarking on anything extravagantly or haphazardly pleasurable." Letting the words roll off my tongue with an arrogance not my own. I don't know how I became such a swift liar, but it was almost second nature to me.

The father's eyes never relented in their gaze, but he slowly nodded, and put his head down on the couch again. I silently wished the most horrible of hangovers on him and turned to lead Chris out of the house. As we left the house I heard him let out a gasp, and a small chuckle.

"How did you come up with a lie like that so fast?" He said slowly.

"Who said it was a lie?" I smiled. The darkness was dense but the beam of light from the porch was falling directly upon me.

"Um..."

"Don't worry it was." I laughed gently. We walked slowly to my car and slid in.

"Does this mean we are friends?" He asked into the darkness of my car.

I thought about it for a moment, friends with this boy was something that I had felt that I had achieved and surpassed in the few short hours I knew him. There was only one thing that I wanted from him to confirm this thought.

"No." I said thoughtfully.

"Oh..."

"I will only be your friend if you start talking more..." I said with a sly smile that I knew he couldn't see, but he laughed as he caught my tone.

"Thank you again, and I will." He said. I imagined his smile on his face. "Thank you..."

~ ~ ~

We made it back to my house by Midnight and I showed him in. We sat in my room, him cross-legged on my bed and me leaning in my computer chair, talking. He was a lot more expressive now that he trusted me and felt a kin ship toward me. I wanted more than anything to be his friend, a desire from deep inside of me that was not something I was used to.

He told me about his friends at school the few he had, and the people who he skate with. He told me about stories that he had read online about various things. We talked about everything under the sun, and I noticed one central theme in everything that he was telling me about. He was in a constant search for people to accept him for who he was. Who he was, I wasn't sure yet.

I tossed him a shirt and some shorts that he could sleep in, and he blushed mumbling something about sleeping in his boxers and handed them back to me. I grabbed a pillow and the throw blanket of my bed and settled down on the floor, not wanting to go to the living room, so we could talk more.

"What are you doing?" He asked sharply.

"Camping out, what does it look like?"

"No, you take the bed ill sleep on the floor."

"No thanks, I sleep in that bed every night; I'd like a change of scenery." I said in an attempt to be humorous.

"I am not kicking you out of your bed." He said as he finished chuckling.

"And I'm not letting you sleep in the floor." I said getting agitated.

"Well then we have a problem..." He said defiantly.

"You know you were a lot more agreeable when you didn't talk to me."

"Well you wanted me to talk to be my friend; I wanted to be your friend, so you get me talking!" He smiled emphatically.

"You were my friend when you weren't talking. There is just something..." I started to let my mind wander as I was talking. I didn't finish that statement out loud, but my mind kicked into gear as I analyzed the thoughts that I had had for the last few hours.

"Just something what?" He said.

"Huh? Oh. Nothing." I said distractedly.

"No...you were about to say something."

"Oh well...don't laugh...but I felt like I was meant to shield you tonight. This is funny coming from me, because I don't believe in planned destiny." I laughed to myself, mostly because he didn't know everything that I had thought about the exact same question.

"Oh...ok."

"Well sleep tight." I said as I stretched out on the floor. I watched silently as he threw a pillow down on the floor and pulled a blanket down.

"Like I said, I will not be the reason you don't sleep in your own bed." He curled up under the blanket and blinked at me.

"Fine have it your way." I enjoyed sleeping on the floor and if I wanted to be honest, him sleeping down here would keep me out of my bed.

Sleeping was always a place that I dreamed but that night I had a dreamless, nice sleep. Nothing to interrupt me or wake me, I woke early Sunday having slept solidly and comfortably. I was shocked and almost jumped when I realized Chris had scooted close to me in the night and was curled against me with his head resting on my arm, instead of a pillow. I didn't know if should pull him in close or gently try to keep him asleep. I decided the latter, just in case he didn't know what had happened in the night and I didn't want to embarrass him.

I pulled his head slowly away from my arm and gently pulled the pillow under it as I slid my arm and I lowered his head and jumped up, grabbing my towel and headed to the shower. I was sliding my boxers down and standing looking in the mirror when I realized that that I had forgotten a new pair of boxers, which were just right around the corner in my room.

I tiptoed with my towel wrapped around me back into my room and slowly opened the drawer. Chris was sleeping sweetly where I had left him; I began to memorize his features. His hair curly and dark was lightly falling over his face and his lips were a soft pink, luscious and bold. His eyes were closed but his entire face was a smooth, almost hairless tan. I envied him for his tan complexion, I had always been a lighter tan and could never really get away from that.

As I finished my shower I walked back into my room half dressed to find a sleepy Chris sitting on the bed stretching. I noticed as his shirt lifted higher than his shorts I saw nice smooth stomach with a dark `happy trail' diving down into the shorts. I knew in that instant that my lust, combined with the admiration and the protectiveness I felt, meant only one thing.

For the first time I had seen and experienced my first occurrence of `love at first sight.' And I wanted it to be my last.
