This is an intro for a long story I'm considering to write. I'd like to know what you think of it so far, I know its very short and hard to gauge where I'm going but I have a plot laid out in my head, just need to know if its worth it.

Alone Together

Part 1

The rain played against the dusty window of the dimly lit ballroom. The thunder could still be heard over the loud band that played on the stage in front of all the dancers and lovers, but no one seemed to mind. It was hard for him to see through the double pained glass with the streaks of water running down in a constantly changing direction, distorting the light and creating eerie shapes. But he could still make her out, center floor, dancing in a pure white skirt that contrasted with her lack of innocence. Twirling around with her light brown hair chasing after her head as it moved this way and that. The rain continued to pour and soak through his thin clothes to make his body shiver. His hair was matted down against his soaked head and rain drops ran down his already tear stained cheeks. Lightning cracked and the boy was illuminated, something that caught her eye from inside. The flash was short and the dirty window made it hard to be sure, so she continued to glance over her shoulder as she twirled around on the dance floor, hand in hand with another. Lightning flashed again and she stared out the window to see empty space. The boy was gone, walking down the long road back to his home to be greeted by no one. His boots were soaked and with each step he pushed the water around in the soles of his feet, causing a flood to rush over the tops of his shoes and settle on the muddy road. The door creaked open and in stepped the boy who immediately shed his layers and headed for his corner of the house and slumped down after closing his bedroom door on his small bed. His hair soaked his pillow and he fell asleep to the sounds of the thunder outside his window, dreaming of her spinning around and around late into the night. She did not come home that night, nor the early morning, but instead came home late in the afternoon in the same white skirt, though far more dirty, to gather her things for this evenings events. He remained in his room the whole time she was there, not making a sound until her was sure she had left again, leaving him, once again, alone in his family's home. The back door swung open as he stepped outside onto the damp lawn and sat on his fence post staring out into the open field. He held his chin in his hands as his gaze fell to his own feet, dirty from the ground he walked on.

"I saw her last night," he said as his friend approached him and took his time to hoist himself upon the same fence that he was situated, his gaze still plastered to his feet and wiggling toes.

The other boy shifted uncomfortably on the wooden fence, trying to maintain his balance. He looked up at John, "Where?"

He lifted his head and squinted his eyes against the strong sun that shone brightly in front of them, making its slow descent to come crashing into the horizon of the world. He spat in the dirt and watched as it slowly percolated into the moist earth beneath him. His head fell again as he made no intention of replying.

Daniel tried again, "Where?"

"Ballroom."

Silence

"Shit," Daniel said, letting his head fall to stare at his own feet.

"Don't cuss."

"I don't know what to say, John..."

"Lets just set."

They sat far a while, exchanging no words or glances. Just sitting. Their shadows stretched along the soft dirt until they were twice as long as their owners, and then there was nothing and moon took the place of the sun. The boys hopped off the fence and John started walking along the fence line until his property ended and then he continued a few paces before looking back at his friend standing in the same place he'd left him.

"C'mon." Daniel ran the fifty feet to catch up with his older friend and they walked together down the same road as last night toward the ballroom. The weather held up this night and the boys sat on the bench opposite the ball room, trying to remain as hidden as possible from the adults that passed before them, coming and going. They saw her walking down the road with her arm locked around the other man, heading for the entrance of the dance hall. A few words were exchanged between the couple as they continued to walk forward.

"I'm ready to leave," John Abrams got up off the bench and walked back the way he had to his home, with Daniel close behind. She was wearing a green dress trying to show off her youth and beauty and hide her past, and she succeeded in all aspects, but for others it took more then a week to move on.

"He called her Ms. Cole," John said.

"Yeah, I heard."

"Not Ms. Abrams."

"Yeah."

The two walked down the road for the four miles back to his house, making eye contact with no one that passed them. The walk was long, but the silence was longer. They entered the empty house and John Abrams crossed to the kitchen and opened the pantry. Pulling out a box of pasta and setting the stove on high to boil some water, he sat down at the table to wait for his meal to prepare. The younger sat right next to him, watching the steam accumulate above the pan and dissipate into the air around him. The meal was ready a few minutes later and the two ate their pasta with some sauce from the pantry. Seemed like all up keep of the house stopped after his father died earlier that month. His mother's absence only added to the lack of life the house possessed. The meal was finished quickly and the plates stayed in their place around the small kitchen table as he got up and headed toward his bedroom.

"You're welcome to stay."

"Thanks."

Daniel followed him into his room and shed his clothes till he wore his briefs and slid into the bed next to his friend and passed out to the sound of John's breathing. John dreamed of the old times and his father and the land they owned and the work they had. The hunting trips they took and the lessons he learned. Life was good. Life was peaceful. He awoke alone in the empty house with the sun pouring through his open window. He threw the covers off of him and stepped onto the floor, rubbing the heel of his hands against his eyes before standing up and walking into the kitchen to find Daniel not yet dressed and waiting for him at the table, still covered with the dirty dishes from last night.
