This is a true story and happened in 1978 while I was serving in the Royal Navy as an engineer lieutenant. I was living in West Hampshire, married with 3 small children and to all outward indications a pillar of the straight and narrow. However, as I am sure that most readers here will understand fully, all is not necessarily as it seems on the surface.

The law then was very different from the present much more liberal and sensible legislation of 2003. The Sexual Offences Act 1967 was a very limited reform. It only exempted gay sex from criminal prosecution if it took place between two consenting males aged 21 or over in private. Otherwise, the 1956 anti-homosexual laws still applied, with any sex act between men illegal in all other circumstances. The 1967 Act only applied to England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland had to wait until 1980 and 1982 respectively to catch up) and did not actually repeal any of the pre-1967 legislation. More importantly for me, the Act specifically excluded members of the Merchant Navy and the Armed Forces. Notwithstanding Winston Churchill's famous quotation that he always thought the traditions of the Royal Navy were "rum, buggery and the lash", those of us in the services were still effectively governed by the draconian 19th century law prohibiting "unnatural offences, buggery and gross indecency" and liable to imprisonment if caught misbehaving. The worst part was probably the resulting instant dismissal from the Service with loss of any pension rights. As a result, those of us who did have an inclination to play with like-minded friends had to be very, very circumspect. Still, there were opportunities.

I worked in a shore training establishment in Portsmouth which meant that I had to drive to and from work through Southampton every day. I soon discovered a gay culture there and started to get curious. I met a great guy of about my own age, then 29, called Philip, who was the area coordinator for the Campaign for Homosexual Equality and openly gay himself. I wasn't too keen on the campaign as it tended to be a bit too open for a supposedly incognito naval officer to get involved with. However, after the first meeting I attended, Philip took me to a great gay nightclub in central Southampton, the Magnum Club. There we sat, talked and inevitably got onto the subject of sex what was I, a basic married straight, doing there and so on. He pushed all the right buttons and clearly I responded the right way to him. It was very liberating and very sexy as it was the first time I had talked openly about what I wanted in life and in particular my sex life. The inevitable result was for him to take me back to his nearby home (I had made an excuse to my wife about staying in Portsmouth overnight). Shortly after getting in the door, we were sprawled on the large beanbag and I was sucking his cock, obviously quite satisfactorily despite my inexperience because I was getting a quite serious and gratifying reaction from him - when suddenly he burst out in fits of laughter. When he could talk again, he asked me "What are you doing? I'm supposed to be the gay one here!" He said he was suddenly taken with the incongruity of it and highly amused that a novice could be so forward. We went on from there in natural and smooth progression. I fucked him on the beanbag - he came just before me without touching his cock and telling me how good it felt and how much he liked my cock inside him - then on to bed where I sat on top of his cock and did much the same. Then again in the morning each way round and a short suck for Portsmouth.

I saw him a couple of times more and the sex experience was as good as the first but it was never going to be a big love affair. Soon after, he met the love of his life and moved to live with him in London. I heard from him a few years later that it was working out long term. I was sad for myself but very happy for him because he was a great hearted and generous friend to me just when I needed it. He taught me to enjoy myself and not to be embarrassed or feel guilty, a problem which I had suffered from in my previous fumblings with other guys. I found that I was ok at technique and that my straight sex experience seemed to have been very good practice for same sex activity. Judging by what Philip told me in the heat of things, straight guys tend to do more fucking than gay and are sometimes better at it, which was logical when I thought about it. It's certainly been borne out by various experiences since then when I've had a great cock right inside me but the owner sometimes didn't know what to do then. Perhaps most importantly of all, Philip taught me that I was not unusual, that there are plenty of others out there in the world with the same instincts, the same likes, that I had no reason to worry about being a freak. I remain really happy that we met for a short period and am immensely grateful to him for what he taught me. Philip was simply a really good friend and sex mate and I shall always love and remember him quite a bit.

Postscript: After a divorce, a 2 year break on my own, a second marriage (should have learned the first time) and a second divorce, I finally finished up foreswearing all women in my life and now live happily with my lover. I occasionally get a bit wistful about all the missed opportunities earlier in my life but no real regrets at all. New experiences continue to occur, fisting and some gentle SM most recently, and I shall be working hard to ensure that I shall continue to learn and expand my horizons.
