Love's Sweet Loss

The pain coursed through my body, but I could have cared less about it and kept on running. Running away from the torment, anguish, and misery.

I finally noticed some houses and limped to the nearest one. I was able to ring the doorbell once before I collapsed from sheer exhaustion. Voices were audible before I completely blacked out.

I awoke to the sound of slow bleeps and the sun peaking through my window. *Window, since when did I have a window? * Then the memories of last night rushed back to me... The pain and the sight of my best friend caused tears to well up in my eyes, when I heard the creak of my door open.

I quickly wiped away the tears and looked up to see the doctor enter. It was then that I realized that this must be a hospital.

"Well Mr. Jeffreys, it seems that you can leave in a day."

"OK, but could you tell me about what happened last night?"

"I did, but you left me to die!"

"No, I tried to save you, but I couldn't!"

"Liar! You didn't try! You left me for dead!"

That last sentence echoed through my head and all I could do was yell NO to fight it off. I started to fall and continued to fall, that last pronouncement repeating. As it did, it became louder and louder until it was deafening.

END DREAM

I awoke with a start and involuntarily pressed the call button. A nurse rushed in to see what had happened.

"What? What's wrong," she asked.

"Oops sorry, I was having a nightmare and accidentally pressed it."

"Okay, I could give you a sleeping pill if you want one."

"No thanks, I'd rather just stay awake for now."

She nodded. "Fine, I'll send the young man in if you want to talk to him."

"Sure, thanks. I'd like to talk to my hero."

She gave me an uncomfortable look and left the room. A few minutes later I heard the door creak open again and in walked my "savior" and someone else...
