Chapter 19
Zac and Jim got back to Jim's house and were placing the presents under the tree. Jim's mom came out of the kitchen. "Snooping, trying to figure out what you're getting?" she asked surprising Zac and Jim. They jumped and Mrs. Bolt chuckled.
"We're putting Joe's presents under the tree." Jim stated. "Besides, you know I hate knowing what I get before Christmas morning."
"True, but I was just teasing you. You're the only kid I know who never wanted to open presents before Christmas. Even at three, when we tried to get you to open a present on Christmas Eve, you refused and wanted to wait until Christmas."
"Kid? Mom, I don't think I qualify as a kid anymore." Jim reminded her.
"Even when you're fifty-five and I'm eighty-one, you'll still be my baby and my kid." Mrs. Bolt stated defending herself. "But, no you are definitely not a kid or little boy anymore. You are growing into a fine young man." Jim smiled.
"Come on, Kid, we need to finish putting these presents under the tree." Zac kidded.
"When you're done, you suppers are on the table. Joe and I already ate. Got him to open up a little. Did you know that when his dad hit him, his mom asked if he wanted one of her dresses? I don't understand parents like that."
"That's because you are such a great mom. I can never tell you that I love you enough." Jim said as he placed the last present under the tree. He went over and hugged his mom.
"You tell me that you love me all the time, maybe not in words, but in your actions, too. I couldn't ask for a better son." Mrs. Bolt stated. Jim blushed.
Zac and Jim went to the kitchen to eat their supper. As they were eating, Joe came down. "Why are you guys so friendly to me? You don't even know me."
"Well, I believe in being friendly to everyone unless they give me a reason not to." Jim said as he took a bite of his potato.
"I have to agree with Jim. Besides, right now, you seem like you need a friend, someone who will just listen to what you feel you need to say." Zac added.
"Well, I'm glad that they asked your mom to take me under her roof. Did you know that they asked if I could stay for an extended period?" Joe asked.
"I was there when Mom was on the phone. She told them that you're welcome to stay until you graduate, or longer if need be." Jim responded.
Joe had a tear running down his face. "I'd like that. You guys actually make me feel like I belong. I haven't felt that in a very long time."
"You do belong, Joe. I can't relate to what you've been through, but I can tell you this, as long as you live here, you will be treated like one of the family. Even should you leave, you're welcome to come visit because, now, you are one of the family." Jim stated. Joe broke down and started crying and Zac moved to the chair beside him and held him.
"Wait until you meet Jackson, I think you'll love him, too." Jim said.
Joe looked up from Zac's shoulder. "Is he a horse?" Jim and Zac started laughing.
"No, he owns the ranch that we work at. Best boss in the world if you ask me, but then, he's the only boss I've ever had." Jim said smiling.
"Yeah, and if you're interested, we might be able to get you working there." Zac added,
"Would I get my own horse?" Joe asked.
"They cost money, but we might be able to see if Jackson will work out a deal for you like he did us. If not, there are plenty of horses that you'll still be able to ride." Zac replied.
Joe smiled. He really liked the thought of riding horses again. It's the one time when no one really noticed his leg, and he was as good as most anybody.
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but aside from smacking you around, what's your dad like?" Jim asked.
"Well, you was an all-star quarterback in high school and got a full ride to college. He was in his last semester and pro scouts were watching the game. I'm told that they came just to look at him because he was THAT good."
"What happened?" Zac asked.
"Dad was on the sideline talking to the coach. A running back on the opposing team came running at him between plays. Broke Dad's leg in three places and he was done. That cost them the game by six points. Dad lost his scholarship and had to drop out. Since then, he was always good with his hands so he started a carpenter business. He always seemed to be working, but we were just barely scraping by. I considered myself lucky if I got a pair of shoes beginning of each school year. My clothes where bought at the thrift store." Joe started looking down.
"You don't need to say anymore, but any idea what happened to the running back?" Jim said as he picked up the plates. Joe shrugged his shoulders. "Zac and I are going to do dishes. If you want, you can help, or come in to chat and get to know us better. If you have any questions, feel free to ask."
"Yea, but if you start getting too personal, we'll politely let you know."
"So do both of the puppies live here, or is one Zac's?" Joe asked.
"They're both mine. The black one is Kunoichi and the yellow one is Colby. You're welcome to help take care of them, if you like, but they are my responsibility, so don't feel like you have to."
"How old are they?" Joe asked.
"I got them two months ago and they were six weeks old at the time."
"Hope you don't mind, but I gave them some of my steak while your mom and I were eating." Joe confessed.
"Not the first time they've had food from the table, just remember, they are puppies, so be careful what you give them." Jim advised.
"I didn't give them any of the fat, I was afraid it would give them the runs, and I cut the meat small. I think your mom caught me because she was smiling, but she didn't say anything."
"If you want one to sleep with you, I'm sure they would. Just be warned, if they wake you up whining, they want to go outside. If you don't take them, they will do their business on the bed. We have them pretty much housebroken, but they are still puppies with small bladders." Jim warned.
"I can attest to that." Zac said.
"Can I sleep with the yellow one? He keeps untying my shoes." Joe said with a chuckle.
"Yeah, Colby likes doing that. When I wear my boots, he'll look all around trying to find the laces." Jim responded.
Joe chatted and asked what Zac and Jim wanted for Christmas. "You don't need to get us anything. Besides, no offense, but do you have any money?" Jim asked.
"No, but I was just curious. I know you guys went and got me something, so I was hoping maybe I could figure a way to get something for you. Not sure how, yet, but I'd at least try."
"Just be our friend, that's all we really want." Zac said.
"But, you're already getting that, and you're being my friend as well as giving me gifts." Joe explained.
"If you figure out a way to get us something, find something that makes you think of us. Whatever you get, I'm sure we'll like." Zac stated.
"And if you don't get us anything, either we'll understand or we'll tickle you." Jim said with a grin.
"I vote we tickle him now." Zac smiled.
The boys finished the dishes and took the puppies outside. "Ewww, I think Kunoitchy is pooping." Joe said.
"That was close but her name is Kunoichi. K-u-n-o-i-c-h-i and the i's sound like e's." Jim said as he picked up the pooper scooper and plastic bag.
After the puppies were done with their business, they went to the door to be let back in. When the door was open, they ran to their water and started lapping it up. Mrs. Bolt called out, "Boys, I'm going to bed. I have a meeting with the social worker. Joe, you need to come with me, so don't stay up too much longer."
"They're not taking me away, are they?" Joe asked with a slight quiver to his voice.
"No, I need to sign some papers that will give me legal guardianship over you. They just want you there to see what you think of the idea. They'll also be giving me a check to help with expenses, but I think I'll let you keep the first one so you have some money." Mrs. Bolt explained. Joe smiled, he would have money to buy presents and he actually felt like someone really cared about him for once.
Joe said goodnight and hugged Jim and Zac. He called Colby and they went to his room. Zac and Jim went to Jim's room with Kunoichi. As they climbed into bed, she jumped up and laid in the middle. Jim and Zac gave her a smooch and she took turns licking their faces. They laughed.
In the morning, Zac was the first one up. He slipped on his boxers and headed for the door. Kunoichi followed him. "You want to go outside?" Zac asked. When the door was opened, she ran to the backdoor. Zac hurried to let her out.
Feeling the emptiness of the bed, Jim got up and slipped on a pair of shorts. He went to the kitchen and saw Zac standing at the back door. "Dude, you may want to put on a pair of shorts or something before my mom gets up. I don't mind it, but she might get embarrassed by that beautiful thing sticking out of your boxers." Jim said licking his lips.
Zac looked down and saw his cock sticking out. If anyone but Jim had been there, he might have been embarrassed, himself. "Kunoichi is outside. I'm going to grab something to put on." By now, half Zac's clothes were in Jim's closet and dresser anyway and half of Jim had clothes in Zac's room.
Jim started fixing breakfast while watching for Kunoichi to be ready to come in. Zac ran upstairs hoping no one caught him. Joe was coming out of his room just as Zac opened Jim's bedroom door. "Morning, Zac. I think Colby needs to go outside. He woke me up whining at the door."
"He probably heard us up, but he usually does go outside about this time. Jim's downstairs waiting for Kuno to come in. He might be fixing breakfast, too. Hope you're hungry." Joe's stomach took that time to grumble. Joe and Zac laughed.
Joe took Colby to the back door and when he opened it, Kunoichi started to head for it. When she saw Colby coming out, she decided it was time to play. Joe laughed at the two of them. "If you keep an eye on them, I can concentrate more on breakfast. Hope you like bacon, eggs, hash browns, and juice, or milk. Or, there will be fresh coffee if you prefer."
"Can I have juice and milk?" Joe asked.
"If that is what you want, sure. I may do the same for once." Jim said smiling.
Zac came downstairs wearing a pair of navy colored shorts. Jim was just putting the food on the table and Joe was letting the pups in. They heard Mrs. Bolt coming downstairs. As they ate breakfast, Mrs. Bolt started to talk. "Joe and I will be at the social worker's about nine, then I plan to take him shopping to get whatever he may still need. We should be home by noon. What are your plans?"
"Well, I guess I'll be with you." Joe said with a grin.
"He's definitely going to fit in here, nicely." Jim stated
"Jim and I are going to take the pups to the park for a couple hours. I figure we'll be back around eleven. When we get back, we'll prepare a lunch then maybe the four, or five if my mom wants to go, can go out to the ranch and show Joe our horses. Possibly do some riding." Zac suggested.
"I don't know about the riding. Weatherman says it will start snowing again around one." Mrs. Bolt said. "He's calling for another eight to ten inches before six.
"In that case, maybe we should wait to go to the ranch and just fix hot cocoa and stay in." Jim suggested.
"By the way, my mom wants to know if you're still coming over tonight. We'll be opening one present each if you are. Then we'll bring over the rest of the presents tomorrow morning."
"Nope, I'm not going, then. I want to wait until tomorrow to open mine." Jim said.
"Well, you can open one present tonight and the rest tomorrow." Mrs. Bolt said.
"Mom," Jim almost whined. Everyone laughed. "Fine, but the present I want to open is Zac."
"Ewww, you want to cut him open?" Joe said being just a little naive.
"Never mind, and no, you're NOT opening THAT present." Mrs. Bolt stated giving Jim a stern look. Zac just smiled and winked at Jim.
Mrs. Bolt and Joe headed for the car. Zac grabbed Jim and kissed him. "Before we take the pups to the park, you want to open that present NOW?" Zac asked with a smirk on his face.
"Yeah, that way, if I don't like it, I can exchange it for something else before Christmas." Jim teased.
They went to Jim's room and removed their shorts. Zac grabbed Jim and held him close. Their lips came together and Zac dominated Jim's mouth with his tongue. As they kissed, Zac moved closer and closer to the bed. When he felt Jim start to fall on it, he let him go. Zac grabbed the lube and slicked his cock thoroughly.
Jim was laying on the bed and Zac lifted his legs onto his shoulders. Zac moved closer and his cock started teasing Jim's ass. Zac leaned towards Jim and his cock slipped into the wanton orifice like it belong. Jim moaned. Zac leaned down and started kissing Jim. His cock was now all the way in. As they kissed, Zac started pulling out slowly then Zac would thrust back in as quickly as he could. Zac made love to Jim for a long time before he was done. Then they got dressed and went to the park so the pups could play.
Mrs. Bolt was in a room signing papers accepting full responsibility for Joe. She discussed the thought of adoption, but the case worker told her at this time, Joe was not available for adoption. If she seriously wanted to adopt Joe, though, they didn't see his parents causing any problem.
Joe was in another room with another social worker. She handed him a can of Coke and asked if he wanted anything to eat. "No, thank you. We had a big breakfast." Joe responded patting his full belly. Then he looked at the social worker. "You're not planning on pulling me away from this family, are you?"
"Not unless we deem there is a reason for it. I take it you liked your night there?"
"It was the first time I felt like I belong somewhere. Jim even went out to get me present for tomorrow. He didn't want me to feel left out." Joe explained.
"Jim is Mrs. Bolt's son, isn't he? Sounds like he's a real nice guy. Have you let him know that you're gay?"
"He knows. So does his boyfriend. Jim also told me that now I am a part of the family regardless of whatever happens."
"Well, I hope everything continues that way. Unless something happens otherwise, you can expect to spend the rest of your teenage years there." Joe smiled. "We're also getting you enrolled in school here. From the reports I read, you're same age as Jim, so you may share some classes."
"I'd like that." Joe said taking a sip of his Coke.
"We'll see what we can do. Once we get you enrolled, we'll bring your schedule. I must say, you seem in a better mood than last time I talked with you."
Joe smiled. "Like I said, first time I felt like I belonged. And Jim thought I'd like clean clothes, so he gave me some of his. He also has two puppies. He told me that they are his responsibility, but I can play with them any time I want."
"You really think highly of him, don't you?"
"Oh yes. He's the best brother I could possibly have." Joe sounded excited.
"OK, I think I've talked to you enough to know you're where you should be. Let's see if Mrs. Bolt is done so she can take you home." Joe was happy to hear those words.
As they walked in, Joe heard them talking. "That finishes it. And if you're serious about adopting Joe, we'll see what we can do." He overheard his case worker saying. Joe started to cry.
"What's wrong?" the social worker with him asked.
"Nothing, I'm just so happy knowing that I am wanted." Joe said.
"Well, the Bolt family do seem to care about you. I'm glad that we contacted them first. Would you like another soda to take home?"
"No thank you. Mrs. Bolt said that she was taking me shopping to get anything I may need." Joe said smiling.
Just then, Mrs. Bolt walked up. "Are you alright, Joe? You look like you've been crying."
"I was, but it was happy tears. I was told that I will get to stay at your house." Joe responded.
"Our house, I want you to think of it as your place too. It's your home, now." Mrs. Bolt explained. Joe hugged her tight.
"Would it upset Jim if I started calling you Mom? If I may. You may not officially be my mom, but I feel like you've already been more of a parent than either one of my real parents."
"We'll talk about it, but I don't think he'll mind." Mrs. Bolt replied with a tear ready to fall from her eye. She could really feel the pain Joe must have gone through. She grabbed Joe around the shoulders and hugged him.
They got into Mrs. Bolt's car and she looked at him. "We need to go to the bank for me to cash this." She said handing him the check she was given. "It's not as big as I thought it would be, but they only gave me for this last week of December. I'll get another check next month."
"And you said this one is mine? I hope it's enough to get Jim, Zac and you something for Christmas. I think it should be."
"You don't have to get me anything, and if you're short getting what you want for Jim and Zac, I'll help you." Mrs. Bolt said with a huge smile.
After they cashed the check, she handed Joe the money. He put it in his pocket and Mrs. Bolt asked where he wanted to go first. "Do you know if they have spurs? I don't know why but I think they spurs would go good for when they ride their horses."
"I don't really know about Zac, but I don't think either of them have any. Is that what you want to get them?" Mrs. Bolt asked. Joe gave a quick nod. "Then, let's go see Jake at the Tack Shop."
She drove to the store and Joe started opening his door before she was stopped. "Joseph Charles Walker, you wait until I'm stopped before you open that door." Mrs. Bolt said sternly.
Joe was kind of surprised by her using his full name. He didn't even know that she knew it. "I'm sorry, I'm just excited about getting something for my family, my new family." Joe said. Mrs. Bolt could hear that familiar quiver in his voice.
"I understand, Joe, but I don't want you getting hurt. So, please wait until I turn off the engine before you open the car door in the future." Mrs. Bolt said in a calmer voice.
"I will, and thank you." Joe said with a smile returning to his face.
"For chewing you out?" Mrs. Bolt was a little surprised.
"Yea, my mom or dad never said a thing when I did that with them. While I don't like being chewed out, it tells me that you care." Joe explained. Mrs. Bolt mussed his hair up.
Joe fixed his hair best that he could without having a comb or brush on him, then he followed Mrs. Bolt into the store. "Hey, Heather. Who's this guy following you?"
"He's my son. Technically, he's my foster son, but he's my son as far as I'm concerned." Mrs. Bolt responded. Joe's smile got bigger, if that were possible.
"So, you're the one Jim was in here telling me about. He was so excited talking about you." Jake said.
"Jim was in here?" Joe asked, smiling so much his face was starting to hurt.
"Maybe I said too much. So, what can I do for you?" Jake said hoping he didn't give too much information about what Jim got for Joe's present.
"Do you know if Zac or Jim have any spurs? Joe wants to get them spurs for Christmas." Mrs. Bolt said.
"As a matter of fact, they don't. I have a few different choices. If they want to wear them while riding, I recommend this pair." Jake said showing a pair of spurs to Joe.
"Do you have two sets of them? I think they'd like a matching pair." Joe asked.
"I sure do, and I happen to have the leather straps that'll match their saddles. Would you like them?" Jake responded.
"Yes, please." Joe smiled.
"Anything else for you?" Jake asked.
Joe was looking at some cowboy boots. He wanted a pair but knew he wouldn't have enough after buying the spurs. Jake smiled knowing Joe would be happy with Jim and Zac's present. "No, I think that's all I can get for now. I may be back in to see about boots another day." Joe said. Joe paid for his purchase and still had money left over that he could get Mrs. Bolt something.
They got in the car and Mrs. Bolt looked at Joe. "Anywhere else you want to go?"
"I still want to get you something, but I don't know what." Joe explained.
"Honey, seeing you this happy is all I really want. You kind of reminded me of Jim when we first moved to Wyoming. Seeing you happy makes me happy."
"I know, and I'm glad, but I feel like that's more of a present to me, not from me."
Mrs. Bolt hugged Joe. "Well, let's go get you some clothes. When the social worker went to your house to get yours, they were displeased with what was there, so they gave me a two hundred gift certificate to get you some new ones. To be honest, I think they all chipped in to get this. To my knowledge, I don't think the state normally does this. And if you see something that you want to get for me, I'll understand if you sneak off to get it."
"I so wish you were my mother from birth. No wonder Jim is so cool." Joe said. Mrs. Bolt teared up and hugged Joe.
"Well, can't change the past, but let's work for a brighter future for you." Mrs. Bolt said.
After they were done shopping, Mrs. Bolt filled her trunk with all the purchases. They got back to the house just before noon. Jim and Zac were preparing lunch in the kitchen.
"Do I smell spaghetti?" Joe asked.
"Hope you like it. We're using deer meat instead of beef." Zac said.
"You want help getting all your stuff to your room?" Mrs. Bolt asked.
"I'll help. We have a little time before lunch is ready and Zac's stirring the pasta." Jim said.
Jim, Joe and Mrs. Bolt carried packages to Joe's room. "Want help putting it away?" Jim asked.
"You're just trying to see what I got for you, aren't you?" Joe asked.
"Well, if you have something for me, then I won't help. I want to be surprised tomorrow." Jim stated as he left the room.
"He really doesn't like opening present before Christmas, does he." Joe smiled.
"No, he doesn't. I'll leave you to put things where you want them. You don't have to do it all at once. I'll call you when lunch is ready."
"Thanks, Mom." Joe said without even thing.
"You're welcome, Son." Mrs. Bolt said with a slight tear. Joe smiled.
As everyone sat to eat, Mrs. Bolt looked at the three boys. Mrs. Schoen was sitting at the table, too. "Joe asked me something today and I said I would check with Jim, but Zac, you're just as much a part of this family, too."
"What did you ask, Joe?" Jim asked.
"I asked your mom if I could call her Mom. I feel like she's been more of one than my real one." Joe said looking down.
"Well, as far as I'm concerned, you are my brother, now, so it would only be fitting." Jim stated. Joe looked at Jim and smiled.
"Yeah, you belong in this family. You are definitely loved here." Zac said.
"I've only known the Bolts for a few months, and they've become a part of my family. As far as I'm concerned, you are now, also. Jim and Zac call both of us Mom, and if you ever feel that way, you are welcome to as well." Mrs. Schoen explained.
"Well, that could get confusing." Joe said with a grin. "Thanks everyone. I'd say that you have no idea how this makes me feel, but I think you really do."
"After we eat, anyone want to go around the cul-de-sac and sing Christmas Carols to our neighbors?" Jim asked.
"You all go ahead. I'll go back over to my house and fix hot cocoa to warm you back up." Mrs. Schoen offered.
As they got to the first house, Joe started singing Joy to the World before Jim rang the bell. Everyone listened to Joe sing. He had an amazing voice. When the neighbors opened the door, Joe had just finished singing and everyone sang Silent Night. The neighbor slipped some money to Joe and told him that he really liked his singing. "Would you like to hear any special song?" Joe asked.
"I love `O Holy Night'." The neighbor stated.
Joe started singing and everyone else sang but soft enough that Joe's voice dominated. The neighbor thanked them and watched as they walked to the next neighbor. Each neighbor hand money to Joe when they sang. Joe would then ask if they had a request and sing the song they requested. He only choked up when someone asked him to sing "What Child is This?"
As they walked into Zac's house, Joe pulled out the money he was handed. Someone gave a twenty, but most gave five or ten dollars. "How do we split this?" Joe asked.
"By whoever it was handed to, gets to keep it." Zac stated.
"I have almost a hundred dollars here. Sure you don't want any?" Joe asked.
"It's yours, Bro." Jim said smiling.
"Then, can someone run me back to Jake's store. I'd really like to get a pair of cowboy boots." Joe said. Jim and Zac stared at each other and smiled.
"I'm sorry, Honey, but the sign said that he was closing at noon and won't be open again until after Christmas." Mrs. Bolt said.
Later that sat and ate supper, then Mrs. Schoen handed one gift to everyone to open. Jim sat there with his gift on his lap. Joe was surprised when she handed him a gift. "I'm sorry. I didn't get you anything." Joe said looking down.
"That's alright. You never met me until today." Mrs. Schoen said. "I hope you like it. I really didn't have any idea what to get you."
Joe opened his present. It was a green sweater with his name in red on the left side. Joe hugged Mrs. Schoen. Zac opened his present and it was an 1873 model Winchester. Zac was ecstatic. "I've always wanted this. I knew I couldn't buy it until I was eighteen, but I would go once a week to look at it." Zac stated.
"I know. I've been talking to Conner at the gun shop. Look at it closer." Zac did and saw his name engraved on the plate. "I want you to take lessons on shooting before I start buying you bullets for it, though."
Mrs. Bolt opened her gift. It was a pair of light brown (shade of the palomino) horse head lamps. She had a wagon wheel overhead light but no lamps in her living room, so Mrs. Schoen thought they would go perfect with the décor. "Thanks, Marilyn. I love them."
Jim still hadn't opened his gift. Everyone was staring at him. "Fine, I'll open it." Jim said as he started carefully undoing the tape.
"Need some help?" Joe asked as he ripped the paper. Everyone but Jim chuckled. Jim opened the box. It was an identical rifle to Zac's, except it had HIS name engraved.
"Your mom gave her approval on the same condition that Zac has." Mrs. Schoen stated.
"Thanks, Moms." Jim said.
Everyone had another cup of hot cocoa, then Jim, Joe and Mrs. Bolt went home with their gifts. Zac and Mrs. Schoen went upstairs to bed.
