Dear Readers: For those of you who have been following my story, thank you. For those who are only new to this, or have stumbled upon this, years later deep in the archives, I hope you enjoy/have enjoyed reading. I am sad to say that the boys in this story are no longer together, and since I was one of them... well, I must admit that writing and continuing this story is no longer emotionally possible. I loved him with all my heart and still do- and it's not his fault. Regardless, my friends, this will be the final chapter of Hunter and James. If you would like me to write other stories in the future, you may request it, but at least for a little while I will take a leave of absence from Nifty writing. Once again, if you're not supposed to read this, don't; or at least don't blame me when you get caught ;)

Hunter and James Chapter Five

We arrive back at our story on Christmas Day. Hunter and James lay snuggled close on James' bed. The two families shared James' house and had Christmas together. "Why not?" They figured, since the families were so close as it is.

"Merry Christmas, precious." James said in his typical groggy morning tone. Hunter rolled over and smiled, and brought his lips to James'. The boys were enjoying their morning kiss when it happened.

Glass could be heard breaking, and suddenly the boys were wide awake and holding one another. They heard movement downstairs and James detached himself from his lover, reaching for the cobalt blue Louisville Slugger he used for baseball last year.

James moved swiftly out his door, signaling Hunter to stay where he was, as he checked his mom's bedroom door and the door to the guest bedroom, where Hunter's mom was. Realizing they hadn't come out yet, James moved down the stairs.

When he arrived at the foot of the stairs James' mind took in many things at once. First, he noticed that the box that held his gift to Hunter, a silver locket that opened up with their pictures inside, was in the fireplace. On fire.

The second thing he noticed, only after the first, was the man standing next to the fire. He couldn't see his face for the ski mask, but he knew he had a crowbar in his hands. This delay in thought, however, caused James to take a shot to the head from said crowbar. He hit the floor with a mighty thud; and began to feel tears running down his cheeks. The tears weren't from the pain of the crowbar, but instead that he couldn't save the present.

Coming to his senses, James saw the man stepping over him, heading upstairs. James tried to get up, but he was dizzy and could hardly move. After he'd regained the ability to see straight, however, he began to hear a scream. It was then that Hunter appeared at the top of the stairs, the man gripping him with one arm, the other arm holding a knife to Hunter's throat.

"Is this your boyfriend, you little fag?" His gravelly voice came, echoing off the floral wallpaper and wood floors. From out of nowhere, James saw his mother come at the man, reeling back her ringed left hand and imprinting the diamond on the man's cheek. He turned to her, however, and struck her down.

Hunter tried to run, he did, but the man spun back and grabbed the boy's foot. He felt face-first to the floor, and the man pulled his hand up to push the knife into the boy's back. James moved quicker than he'd ever moved before, and threw his hand out, knocking the knife away from Hunter, and impaling it into the floor.

Hunter ran now into his mother's room, and James stayed to deal with the intruder. He took up a stance and motioned for the man to come at him. The man with the knife had retrieved his weapon from the floor, and swiped a few times at James before the boy lunged at him. James' fist flew into the man's adam's apple, crushing his windpipe. But by the time he'd managed that, the knife had already sunk into his chest. James couldn't feel it, but the knife had punctured his heart.

Hunter by now had come out, once he heard James scream in agony. The sight of James's body, with a knife sticking out, horrified him. But as he gazed up to James' face, he saw the smile that he's always said he loved so much. With tremendous effort, James spoke clearly and with conviction:

"I love you Hunter."

Hunter knelt beside James, and kissed him. When they broke the kiss, he said, "I love you too, James."

THE END

Epilogue/Bonus Stuff:

This is not how the story truly ended for Hunter and James. They remain friends, and are both healthy and well. I wrote the story this way as an expression of how I feel, and since this is all about how I wanted the relationship to go, I finished with how I'd always wanted it to end. Hunter was my life, and to have died protecting him is how I'd want to go, if I had the choice.

Over the many months he and I have been together I've written many things, and I believe this poem is the most relevant, considering this Nifty story is merely an extension of the dream world in which Hunter still loves me. I hope you like it.

How am I supposed

To explain what I feel?

One language is not enough

Two are still not near

What I want to say

Can't be said, only projected

I'll love you always

With me you are protected.

Who else can make me smile when I frown?

Who is invades my thoughts when they're not around?

I know I'm not your number one

But poetry is just for fun

Here I can pretend, we'll always be together

That you love me, like I love you; maybe better.

What does a poet do but dream?

But write, create, develop a scene.

A poet paints a picture

Of his world, his everything.

My picture looks like you,

A love neverending.
