"Jaiden, you are glued to that television program, what're you watching?"
"Peyton, I'm watching the first Asian-American female hazzan in the world. She is also the first female Asian=American Rabbi in the world. She first served as the Cantor and assistant Rabbi at Westchester Temple in New York state, and then she was called and installed as the Cantor at the Central Synagogue. She was like Midas in that everything she touched turned to gold and exploded in growth. That, with some reservations about her speaking on God, led to her being called and installed as Central's first female Rabbi. Her singing is exquisitely beautiful, and her messages are mesmerizing; I could listen to her all day." "That good, eh?" "Better than that good. Sit down and listen to her passion in this sermon."
Jaiden and Peyton sat for the better part of an hour listening to Rabbi Buchman speak on the holocaust and how they, Jews, could never let that happen again, how good people must stand up together against oppression.
One by one, the children awoke from their naps and went into their dads' room and sat on the floor in front of them and listened to Rabbi Buchman's sermon. They sang along as Cantor Matson and his associate Cantor sang as the associate Rabbis assisted in the service.
The children were glued to the television set unlike they had been before. When the service concluded, the children noticed they were watching YouTube and asked their dads if there was another Central service on the channel. Jaiden checked; there was, so they and the children watched one more service before the children went outside to play.
The second service was about two young boys becoming men by standing and becoming Bar Mitsvah. The Riley-Reynolds boys had questions about their becoming Bar Mitzvah when they turned 13, and Jaiden assured them they would -- they and their other brothers. "What about Alaina, Daddy? I there and honor for her, too?"
"Yes, son, there is. It is called a Bat Mitzvah; it's for girls, and Alaina will honor her dads in the Temple like you boys will for Daddy Peyton and I."
The boy's questions satisfied, they ran outside to play; but instead of playing as they normally would, all but on boy sat in a circle while the lone boy pretended to be on the Bema standing his Bar Mitzvah; and they did so until all the brothers had their turn.
The Rabbi watched the boys from next door and called Jaiden about the time outside being so different from the norm. Jaiden peaked out the doors for a second and then told the Rabbu that the boys looked to be pretending to have their Bar Mitzvahs like the one they had just watched on television. Rabbi Kravitz was astonished at what Jaiden related to him and he complimented Peyton and Jaiden for spending such quality educational time with their children.
The children were in the backyard and saw their Rabbi outside. "Rabbi Kravits, we watched two boys have their Bar Mitzvah on television this morning. Daddy said we would have a Bar Mitzvah just like them when we turn 13." "Yes boys, you will, and Rabbi Benson and I will help you with your Bar Mitzvah, and so will Cantor Beth." "Rabbi, will Alaina get to have a Bat Mitzvah?"
"Well, Robert, girls don't have a Bar Mitzvah, they have what we call a Bat Mitzvah; it's the same thing as a Bar Mitzvah, but it's only for girls."
"Daddy said that when we have our Bar Mitzvah's we'll become young men." "That's true in a sense, Robert. When you turn 13 and have your Bar Mitzvah, or Bat Mitzvah as in Alaina's case, you become responsible for your behaviors, the things you do right -- and the things you do wrong. People will start seeing you as young men and Alaina as a young lady."
"Rabbi, it's OK if we start studying for our Bar Mitzvah's now, isn't it?"
"I don't see why not, Jason. The more you learn of Hebrew, how to read Hebrew writings, the easier your mitzvah will be and the more fun you will have achieving your Bar Mitzvah."
"Daddy Peyton, Rabbi Kravits said we could start studying for our Bar Mitzvah now, and that it would make it easier when we are on the Bema for our ceremony. Can you and Daddy Jaiden help us learn to read Hebrew?" "Son, I think your dads can do that. We're really proud of you boys for taking on such a task."
"Jaiden?" "Yes, Peyton, dear." "The rabbi has lit a fire on the nozzle of a gas can, and we now have our work cut out for us." "What do you mean, Peyton?" "Rabbi told the boys they could start studying for their Bar Mitzva -- NOW!" "He didn't!" "Oh, YES. He did." "OK, Peyton. The eggs in the fridge are probably a bit old to feed to the children, so in the morning at two a.m., we egg his car." "What about his house?" "We can do that too if we have eggs left over."
"Jaiden, you have a mean streak, do you know that?" "Yeah, I get that from Mom and her Ashkenazi Rabbi Daddy. She says Grandad had a temper when he would get mad. I guess I inherited it along with Mom's get even streak."
"Jaiden, have you told your mom that?" "No, Peyton, I haven't - and you better not tell her either! She'll take a few weeks of vacation and come stay with us to spoil the boys to pay us back." "What did you tell me not to mention to your mom?" "Exactly, my dear!"
Peyton laughed as he looked out the French doors to watch the children playing. Jaiden's phone rang, and he said, "speaking of the devil!"
"High, mom, what do we owe for the honor of your call?" "Jaiden, my ears are itching off and that usually means you have been talking about me. So, I thought I'd take a few weeks of vacation and go to Erie to see my grandchildren." "And, Mom?" "And, what, Jaiden?"
"Come on, Mom. You have that tone in your voice that you get when you are up to something."
"Nathan Robert, what's with the attitude and storming through the house like that? You know we don't act that way in this house! I'm sorry Daddy; Alaina made me mad and didn't want me to play with one of my toys, so I just came inside. I was going to study my Hebrew on the computer. "Son, that's a good thing to do, but you have seven more years before your Bar Mitzvah."
"I know, Daddy, but when I HAVE MY Bar Mitzvah, I want it to be perfect." "Being perfect, son, isn't what it is all about. Your Bar Mitzvah will be about assuming responsibility for your actions and behaviors, being dedicated to God, upholding the rules He sets for us to live by, and being kind and helpful to others even when we don't want to be." "Sort of like you being a doctor to help children, Daddy." "Well, Sorta, Nathan. The difference is that I love what I do to help others and provide for you, your brothers, and your sister. When you grow up and do whatever it is that you want to do for your career, I want you to love what you will be doing the same way Daddy Peyton and I love what we do." "OK, Daddy."
"Now, son, I think it will be more fun for you to go back outside and play with the toys you wanted. Tell Alaina that you are going to do just that. You can take up for yourself, but I would rather the two of you not get into a fight." "I'm not going to fight, Alaina, Daddy. Boys aren't supposed to hit girls."
"Who told you that, Nathan?" "That's what the teachers say at school."
"Well, I don't necessarily agree with that. You have the right to fight back if a girl hits or attacks you. Women want equal rights with men, and if they are going to demand that, they must understand that if they are going to act like boys, they are going to be treated like boys. If that means they will get hit back after hitting a boy, that's just how it is. Just don't go picking a fight with a girl. Always walk away from a fight if you can, but don't let someone hurt you. I will teach you boxing, and Daddy Peyton will teach you karate and jujitsu. OK?" "Neat. OK, Daddy." "Now, go back outside and have a good time, and don't let Alaina make you mad.
Jaiden looked out the French doors and watched Nathan to see what he would do when he got to the toys outside. He got the toy he wanted to play with and when Alaina tried to stop him, he put his finger in her face, said a few words, and she backed off. Jaiden thought, "That's how you do it, son; I'm proud of you for standing up for yourself!"
Peyton walked into the den, approached Jaiden, put his arms around his husband, and kissed him gently on the neck.
"Jaiden, you know what?" "What, babe." "I love you more every day, and the more I see you, the more I want to hold you and have you hold me. "Tell you what, Peyton: sit on my lap and let's watch the children play."
Peyton sat on Jaiden's lap, and Jaiden immediately stuck his nose in Peyton's hair and sniffed hard. "I still love the smell of your hair and body just as much as I did the first day we met. It drives me wild to this day." "Babe, it's the same with me. I don't need booze to get intoxicated; I need you in my arms and me smelling your scent. That's all. Peyton looked up, and Jaiden kissed him tenderly on the lips. "Peyton, I love you to Mars and back!" "Ditto, love."
Peyton and Jaiden sat in the den holding each other for some time as they silently watched their children playing joyfully in the backyard. Jaiden snuck his hand up Peyton's shirt, rubbing his chest for the longest and periodically tweaking his nipples, eliciting a small shriek from his husband. Suddenly, Jaiden's hand slid south, holding and softly stroking Peyton's phallus.
"Jade, you better be careful doing that; you may get your hand soiled." "Peyton, it won't be the first time, and I doubt it will be the last. Besides, you know how much I love to play with everything about you." "I do, Jade, and you know how much I enjoy being romantic with you."
Jaiden remarked, "Oh no, here comes Nathan again! I wonder what has upset him this time."
Nathan walked into the house and past his dads without so much as a word. "Nathan, where are you going and why?" Jaiden asked. "Daddy, Alaina farted on me and it stunk. It still stunk and I can smell it, so I'm gonna take a bath." Neither dad said anything ... until Nathan disappeared upstairs.
"Jaiden, it seems that our children are becoming self-conscious about their bodies ... they are growing up too fast!"
Jaiden looked at Peyton and said, "I'm going to ask Nathan a question when he comes back downstairs; watch the reaction on his face."
Nathan completed his shower and walked back downstairs to the den, and when he did, Jaiden asked, "Nathan, son, who's your girlfriend at school?" The boy turned several shades of crimson red, looking embarrassed at his dad's question. "Why did you ask me that, Daddy?" "Well, usually when somebody farts on a boy and he gets upset and takes a shower, it usually means he is sweet on somebody and always wants to look and smell his best." Nathan didn't say a word as he walked out the French doors into the backyard. Jaiden and Peyton were howling with laughter, the boys are growing up, and life is getting hilarious.
The next day when Jaiden arrived at his office, a newspaper was laid open on his desk with the announcement that a new family practice physician was coming to town and would be affiliated with his office. Since he, Peyton, Richard, Andrew, and Leon knew nothing about this new association, Jaiden called a hasty meeting of all concerned. The staff and doctors met in the breakroom to discuss the newspaper article. It seems that Jaiden's mother is scaling back her practice and is relocating to Erie. "Guys, did my mom discuss any of this with you before today?" Everybody was grinning from ear to ear as they all replied, "NOPE !"
Jaiden looked at everyone and immediately knew they were lying their asses off. He leaned on the table and rested his forehead in his left hand while repeating over and over and over ... "Oh no, my worst nightmare is coming true!" Leon, being the good psychologist he is said, "Jaiden, we need a general practitioner to handle part of the non-cancer problems that come up, and it will allow you, Peyton, and Richard to have more time to concentrate on what you love to do most -- help children beat cancer! Besides, at most, your mom will be in the office, maybe, two days a week. She is going to be the new department head of general medicine at L.E.C.O.M." "What!" Jaiden asked. "She and I discussed her need to downscale her practice and learn to relax and get out more. She said I could tell you after the story hit the papers."
"Jaiden, what your mom truly wants to do is train new, young doctors to be the best they can possibly be. She wants them to be as good and as dedicated as you and Peyton are." "She said that, Leon?" "Yes, bro-in-law, she said that."
"Peyton, I need to talk to Mom and see if she is going to live with us." "Oh, no hell you don't. She isn't going to want to live with us, Jaiden. She has already bought a house here It's in the area but far enough away for her and us to have our privacy." "So, you knew about this too?" "I did, Jaiden, but it was supposed to be a surprise for you, and, apparently, it was a bigger surprise than anticipated." "Surprise; SURPRISE! Try more like a shock!"
"I know, babe, but you have to consider that your mom is getting older, not younger, and she needs to start winding down her medical career, and she can think of no better way to do that than to train good, young doctors to take her place." "You're right, Peyton; it's just not something I had given any thought to. But something I am now wondering is this: are your parents retiring and moving to Erie as well?" "Well, now that you ask, you know that big farm at the north slope that is so pretty? Dad bought that farm a month ago and didn't tell me until yesterday. I was going to talk to you about it tonight. He has sold the practice at a decent though lower price than he would get for it and he has sold the farm in Orange Beach to the same person who purchased his practice." "Who is that Peyton?" "My youngest brother." "You're kidding! That is freaking awesome. This is going to be a great chapter in all our lives. It's going to be exciting for our parents to be more involved in the children's lives." "I agree, Jaiden, and my parents said they want time with all ten of their grandchildren. That's what excites me, that they think of all the children as their grandchildren." "WOW!" Peyton.
"Jaiden, I guess you've seen the papers by now and know the secret." "Mom, you could have told me." "Jaiden, if I had told you before now, you would have fretted yourself into a frenzy. It's just time, and I need to start winding down while I can still enjoy teaching, traveling, and spending time with my grandchildren at my place instead of always having to be at your house and invading your and Peyton's privacy. And you have to think and remember, sex is always more fun when it is spontaneous, and nobody is around for you to worry about." "I didn't think about that, Mom; you're right. But it's been a while. What is sex?"
"Jaiden, I raised you, remember? I know you better than that!" Jaiden was about to die laughing at his mom's comment because she does know him and knows better about the sex life: Jaiden isn't going to go without, so to speak. He's married, and he's still "in love" as Charlie told Nick in Heartstopper when Nick tried to catch a glimpse of Charlie without his shirt on as they were changing clothes in the rugby locker room.
Richard, did you know Andrew bought your dad's practice and the farm in Orange Beach?" "No. When did that happen, Jaiden?" "I'm not sure, but it was recently. "Damn! I was kind of hoping he'd live in this area, but I know he has been happy there, and if he and his boyfriend can get married and be happy there, build a family, I'm proud of and for him."
