Jason Scott asked his dad, Jaiden, if they could walk around the neighborhood together and talk about things. It was a bit odd in terms of the norm that Jason wanted to hold his dad's hand as they walked, but for some reason, that is what he asked to do and his dad obliged.
"Jason, what made you want to take a walk, just you and me?" "Daddy, I am trying to figure out why Alaina did what she did for me. I know she can be mean at times, but I've never seen her mad like that before. Why did she do that."
"Son, that is a question you need to ask Alaina. I can tell you what I think, but what I think could be wrong." "What do you think, Daddy?" Well, Jason, you you're a very even-tempered boy who Daddy Peyton and I see as the peace maker of our children. I think Alaina sees the same thing in you, and I believe that because of your disposition, she has great respect and love for you. Even though you and your brothers aren't blood relatives of Uncle Dale's and Uncle Charlie's children, we have raised all ten of you as brothers and sisters, and that is the way we hoped you would see each other, and I think all the children in the house see each other that way." "Am I right, Jason, or am I wrong thinking that?" "You are right, Daddy. We know we are brothers and a sister even though we have different daddies." "Son, thank you for telling me that."
"Alaina has a short fuse and she doesn't put up with a lot of nonsense, and she protects you boys like a hen protecting her biddies. Mess with the biddies and you are going to have to fight momma hen. When someone your age, or maybe a little bit older messes with you boys, Alaina is going to set that person straight, and there is no doubting that. That is why she got back at Chuck for putting the itching powder in your underwear. I don't think you know or realize it, but Nathan was in on that prank and Alaina kicked his butt good!"
"Really, Daddy?" "Yep, she sure did. I don't think your brother will do anything like that again, not and have to take his punishment from Alaina." "Is that why you and Daddy Peyton didn't get on to Nathan, because Alaina already took care of him for what he did." "That is precisely why, son. There is no need for Daddy Peyton and I, or Uncle Dale or Uncle Charlie to get involved when you and your sister and brothers aren't getting along like you should when each of you will find a way to solve your own problems."
"Daddy." "Yes, Jason." "I love you to Mars and back!" Jaiden teared up with that statement and picked up his son and goose kissed him on his neck making Jason squirm and laugh. As they walked down the street, Jaiden caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye that made him stop and look. "Jason, what is that building up on the corner?" "It's Dunkin Donut's, Daddy." "Hmm. Jason, can you keep a secret that will be between just you and me?" "Yes, Sir; what is the secret?" "Buddy, we are gonna walk on down to Dunkin Donuts and get us a donut. What kind do you like?" "I like the Chocolate-Chocolate donut, Daddy." "Good! Let's go get one. You can get some milk, and I will get me some coffee, and we will sit down and eat our donuts!"
Jason was holding Jaiden's hand as they walked down the street to the donut shop. People would drive by and smile at the dad and son. Everybody in Erie knew who they were, and, for the most part, loved being around the children. Usually though, when you see one of the children you see them all with both of their dads.
When they had finished their donuts and were walking back home, Jason wanted to sit on Jaiden's shoulders, so Jaiden bowed down, picked Jason up and sat him on his shoulders. Jaiden could not be prouder, sporting a smile that went from ear to ear. It was the first time he spent special time alone with Jason, something he was going to have to do with all his boys, and he would make sure Peyton did the same thing.
Jaiden was holding Jason's feet so he didn't fall off his shoulders backward. Jason had been wearing Crocks which Jaiden was now holding in his hand -- and he was tickling the bottom of Jason's feet making him squeal and squirm. This was special time that Jaiden would never forget.
The two guys finally made it home. When they went inside the house, Peyton said, "Jaiden, you look the happiest that I have see you in a long time." "Peyton, I had the best one-on-one time with Jason; it was so special. I am going to take time with each of our boys the same way. Jason and I talked, and we walked home with him sitting on my shoulders. I tickled his feet the entire time and he squealed and laughed his head off."
"Yeah, I noticed part of our son was missing when y'all walked through the door!" Peyton, it was just so special, so much fun, so enjoyable, and it has made me feel so fortunate and happy to be me, and I don't know when I have felt that way." "Jaiden, I have been trying to get you to realize that since we first met. We've been together for almost twenty years, and you finally realized how special you are to others." Peyton then kissed Jaiden and popped him on the butt, saying, "About time good looking!"
Jaiden's mom called and they chatted for quite a while. She told him he sounded really up with his mood, and he explained to her why. "You finally saw in yourself what everybody has been telling you for years, didn't you!" "I did, Mom, and it felt so neat that it was my son who pointed that out to me. We had such a good time on our walk," "Jaiden, I am glad you did. You and I - and my pistol -- used to take walks in the mountains and you would talk my ears off. Sometimes I laughed so much my face hurt and I would think what my grandmother would say about getting old and getting wrinkles from smiling so much." "Mom, at least you don't have wrinkles in your face." "Oh, yes, I do, I just cover'em up with makeup. Son, I hate to run, I'm at the hospital making rounds, and I want to get through with them so I can go see my boyfriend." OK, Mom, I'll talk with you later."
"Who was that, Jaiden?" "It was my mom. It's kinda strange, though, she said she had to run so she could go see her boyfriend." Jaiden was dumbfounded and Peyton let him stay that way until their doorbell rang two and a half hours later. "Jaiden, get the door, it's for you." "How do you know that, Peyton?" "Trust me love, it is for you and the children."
Jaiden was shocked to see his mother when he opened the door. He had forgotten it was the day she and Peyton's parents were supposed to arrive to keep the children, and he had forgotten he had to have Grampy, Ginny, the Reverend, and Granny at the airport at 9:30 p.m. to head off on their Paris Christmas trip. He still didn't realize that fact until about thirty minutes later when his doorbell rang again and it was his in-laws.
When Jim walked into the house, he exclaimed, "Damn, do you smell that?" "Smell what, Jim?" "Testosterone .... It's everywhere. Not only can you smell it, you can feel it!" "Peyton shot his dad an eat crap look before they both started laughing at the comment that was meant for Jaiden. Jaiden walked into the den rubbing his arm with a wet rag. Jim asked him if he was OK, and Jaiden said, "Yes, Sir, I'm just wiping excess testosterone off my arm. It seems to be everywhere in this house." Everybody laughed at what Jaiden said. They also thought he was telling the truth about testosterone being everywhere in the house with nine tween boys.
Jaiden put the children and his in-laws in the van and Peggy and Peyton went to pick up Gampy, Ginny, Granny, and The Reverend so everybody could eat and get to the airport on time. Jaiden told the children in the van that when they got to where they were going to eat, he didn't want to hear one peep out of the children, or he would turn the van around and drive right back home. Everybody arrived at the Wharf Seafood House and the children were majorly excited but didn't say a word. The Rileys got out of the van and let the children get out one at a time. When everybody had exited and were standing behind the van, Jaiden said, "OK, guys, not you can let your happiness out." "That was all it took and the children let loose with their excitement -- and it was almost as deafening as it would have been in the van. Jim and Phyllis died laughing when they realized he had saved their hearing -- and his as well~!
When they got to the front of the restaurant, Jaiden told the children they could have a little bit of broccoli ot a little bit of boiled cabbage, but they couldn't have both. The effects of cruciferous vegetables would not define the ride home tonight. Everyone had dinner and they got the caretaker's crews to the airport on time to get through TSA and onto the jet for the flight directly to Paris.
When the jet took off, the children loaded into the van with Jaiden and their grandparents. About halfway home, Jaiden said, "OK, who did it," as the adults opened every window in the van. Jaiden looked in the rearview mirror and he could tell by the look on David Alexander's face that it was he who had cut the `LIMBURGER CHEESE FART.'
"David Alexander, you fart one more time like that in this van and I am going to stuff a cork up your butt!" "No you won't Uncle Jaiden!" "What do you mean by no I won't?" "I mean you won't stuff a cork up my butt, you can't." "And why not young man?" "Because you don't have any corks." Jim lost it at that point and laughed until he started coughing and said, "That was a good one, David Alexander!" That is when Elijah James leaned to his right lifting his left butt cheek off the seat and cut the loudest, longest, stinkingest fart ever. Once again, Jaiden pulled into the mall parking lot like he did the last time this happened and got out of the van along with Jim and Phyllis, all three of them gagging.
Jaiden said, "good lord, how can a boy with such a little butt let loose a fart like that? Holy shit ....!" "Jim said, "Jaiden, it may be shit, but I can guarantee you it ain't holy! Damn, even a pig farm doesn't smell that bad!"
Peyton, Dale, Charley, and Peggy pulled in behind the van at the mall and asked what was wrong. Jaiden told Dale to stick his head in the van and take a whiff. Dale did, and he quickly pulled his head out of the van and was gagging. "Damn, Jaiden! Who did that?" "Elijah James!" "ELIJAH JAMES! He's the smallest of your boys. How could a child with a butt that small cut a fart that bad?" Jaiden said, "I don't know, Dale, and I don't wanna know." Peyton said, "It can't be that bad." "Charley said, "Oh yeah," as he escorted Peyton to the side of the van and pushed his head inside. Peyton quickly withdrew his head from the van, put his hands on his knees, and did his best to not throw up." "Holy shit! Elijah James did that?" Peyton's dad said, "As I told Jaiden, Peyton, it's definitely shit, but it ain't holy. A pig farm doesn't smell that bad. Charlie, unbeknownst to the others, had walked next door to the drug store and purchased some linen scented Febreze. He sprayed the inside of the van really well making it possible to continue their journey home.
When everyone was home and inside, Peyton gave the children some antacid to quell the gas problem. Dale made a couple pots of coffee and took it outside onto the deck where the adults congregated to relax and get some fresh air. Jaiden made the comment that when they go out to eat from now on, the children were not going to be allowed to eat cruciferous vegetables at any restaurant. They could get some to take home, but they wouldn't eat them at a restaurant and then ride home in the van. Not again!
Several of the boys farted in the backyard while the Rabbi and Rebbetzin were on the deck with the adults and the smell wafted upward and killed every mosquito and flying insect in the vicinity of the house. Jaiden and Peyton were horribly embarrassed and apologized profusely. The Rabbi said, "Jaiden, Peyton, it's OK, it's perfectly normal for what the boys ate. But I will tell you this, if any of those boys do that in the temple, I will get you. You can mark my words on that." His comment drew a rebuke from the Rebbetzin causing everybody to laugh. However, the Rabbi was serious.
"Daddy, may I use you're and Daddy Peyton's shower?" "Why do you want to use our shower, Elijah?" "Daddy, come right here for a minute, please." Jaiden got up and walked to the bottom of the stairs. "Daddy, can you smell what I smell?" "Peyton, please come over here for a minute." Peyton walked to the stairs, sniffed one time and said, "Jaiden, let Elijah use our shower. Elijah, who is making that stink?" "Jason, Daddy. He is really making the shower and the bathroom smell like poop."
"Tell you what, Elijah, go ahead and take your shower in my and Daddy Peyton's bathroom and then you can sleep with me and Daddy Peyton."
"Jaiden, are you sure?" "Peyton, do you want to get some sleep tonight?" "Cupich, Jaiden. He wouldn't be able to sleep in his room, the stench is horrible." "That's true, and if he isn't in our room, he'll be getting up and knocking on our door every fifteen minutes."
"Daddy! "Yes, sir, Nathan. "Can I sleep on the floor in your room tonight?" "Why, son." "Jason, Daddy. He is making our room stink to bad to sleep in there." Nathan, you cannot sleep on the floor in my and Daddy Peyton's room. There is plenty of room on our bed for you and Elijah -- as long as none of your brothers asks to sleep in our room too." "They probably will Daddy, Jason is really stinking the place up. It's horrible."
"Nathan, how would you and your brothers like to get your sleeping bags and your pillows and have a campout in the room with me and Daddy Peyton?" "I would like that, Daddy. But we could camp in the living room on the floor and we wouldn't bother you and Daddy Peyton." "That's OK, Nathan, my and Daddy Peyton's room will be OK, unless what you really want to do is camp in the living room so you can watch television." "Well, we did think about that, Daddy, if it's OK with you and Daddy Peyton."
"Nathan, we'll let you do that, but I am going to program the television to cut off in an hour." "Neat. Thanks, Daddy."
Jaiden changed his mind about setting the timer on the television. Instead, he picked two short movies the boys liked and told them they could watch the movies, but that when they were over, they had to cut the TV off. "Boys, If I come downstairs to check on you and the movies are over and the television is still on, I will make you go back to your room and sleep with Jason in there.
Jaiden gave the boys time to watch one movie before he went downstairs to check on them. What he found surprised him. The television and the lights were off and the boys were sleeping hard. He smiled and went back to his room. When he got up the next morning to get ready for work, the grandparents were in the kitchen preparing breakfast for everyone. Jaiden told the boys to go sit down in the dining room, that he wanted to speak to them for just a minute.
When they took their places in the dining room, Jaiden told them how proud he was of them holding up their end of the TV agreement. He further told them that when they did that, it made him want to give them more privileges. He said that if it wasn't raining when he got home, he and Peyton would take the boys for a walk down to the donut shop and get them a donut of their choice. He positively reinforced his sons' good behavior in ways that made them want to behave appropriately all the time. Both dads realize, however, that there is no growth without some dissention, so they didn't expect good behavior all the time. They wanted their sons to have some fun.
That evening, Peyton and Jaiden did as they said they would, except they walked down to the donut shop with all ten children to get everybody a donut for being really good. When they got back to the house, Jim asked Jaiden and Peyton to come on the deck, that he had something he wanted to talk to them about.
When they got outside, Jim told the young men how proud he was of them for the way they were raising their children by focusing on positive enforcement. Fellas, you have amazing children because you are amazing parents, and I am so very proud of both of you. The guys didn't see Jaiden's mom standing behind them and jumped slightly when she spoke up to say she totally agreed with Jim. Being amazing parents was translating into amazing children.
"Daddy, when we are bad sometimes, why don't you spank us like some of our friend's parents spank them?" "Mark, do you think you need a spanking for something, or would you rather talk about it and try to do better?" "I like to talk about it, Daddy, but I've wondered why you have never spanked us." "Mark, I don't think I or Daddy Peyton need to hit you to get you to act appropriately and to do right things. Neither of us has EVER wanted to hit you in any way, and we won't. I will not allow myself to lose control in that way and neither will Daddy Peyton." "Daddy, we like how much you love us and how good you and Daddy Peyton are to us, so we don't want to do bad things and disappoint either of you."
"Well, Mark, thank you for saying that. Daddy Peyton and I love you boys more than anything or anybody in this world, and there is nothing we won't do for you. But sometimes Daddy Peyton and I want you boys to do some chores to learn responsibility and to earn some of the thinks you want. Does that make sense to you?" "Yes, Sir, Daddy." "Mark, come sit on my lap and let's watch some TV together and then go to bed."
Jaiden held Mark and rubbed his back and hair until he fell asleep. Jaiden carried his son upstairs and tucked him into bed. Each of the boys had gotten some sticky notes and wrote love notes to their dads. When Jaiden and Peyton went to bed, each of the boys snuck downstairs and stuck their notes all over the refrigerator. Dale's and Charlie's children did the same thing. Seems the children got together to try and think of something nice to do for their dads, and they couldn't have achieved their goals any greater than the way they did.
When the dads got up- the next morning and went into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee, they found their notes. One by one they took the notes off the fridge and read them - over and over as tears flooded their eyes. The grandparents walked into the kitchen, saw their son's teary eyes, and asked them what was wrong. All four dads didn't say a word, instead handing their children's love note to the grandparent so they could see what their amazing grandchildren had done. Every adult in the house was teary at that point.
Jaiden and Peyton took their notes and put them on the fridge in their office. The ladies in the front office were sniffling after seeing the notes. They work for amazing doctors who have amazing children.
Richard came into the office that morning smiling and shaking his head. Peyton asked his brother what was so funny and Richard said when he and Sally got up that morning to prepare breakfast for their boys, Andrew was in the laundry room washing his clothes -- and sheets. "Peyton, I don't know what Leon said to Andrew when they had their talk, but whatever it was, it worked. That boy has acted so responsibly over the past couple of weeks that he has amazed us. Sally doesn't mind washing his christened clothes. They don't bother her -- or me for that matter. We just use grabbers and don't pay attention to what we see or smell. Heck, the boy doesn't even have skid marks in his underwear anymore." "Richard, please get Andrew to teach our boys how to do that, PLEASE. Skid marks reign around our house; but they are expected, so, se la vie."
"Peyton, do you realize how fortunate we are to have the spouses and children we have. We are both so blessed that it amazes me." "Same here, my brother!"
"Jaiden, have you talked to Richard this morning?" "No, he headed over to the ward to do rounds before I got a chance to speak to him; why, what's up?" "He and Sally got up this morning and found Andrew doing his own laundry, especially his sheets." "Peyton, that is hilarious." "I agree. I asked him to teach our boys to do their own laundry. He said Andrew wasn't even having skid marks in his briefs anymore." "Peyton, can you imagine what it would be like at our house to pick up our sons' underwear and not see any skid marks or tar pits." "I can't imagine that, Jaiden, but I sure would love to be able to."
