The moving van was loaded, the children were in the van with their dads, and the car hauler had picked up the other vehicles and had headed to Brevard, North Carolina. It started out as a stressful event but has morphed into a journey of inspiration and hope.
Jaiden, Peyton, Dale, and Charlie would have more time for and with their children. New adventures and things to do would present to the families, and the children would grow leaps and bounds both in size, maturity, and determination. Animals were everywhere and the children loved to watch their antics. The dads loved to watch the children watching the animals without worrying about the animals eating the children, though the dads had sometimes wished they had -- facetiously, of course!
They took their time driving to Brevard, and were happy that their parents would be locating to the city as well. Ginny and Granny were staying in Erie, given their advancing age. Jaiden's mom would be joining their pediatric and cancer practice assisting with pediatric medicine while Jaiden and Peyton concentrated on cancer treatments for children. Peyton's parents would be watching their grandchildren while their dads were working. Things were working out beautifully, all things considered.
After two days, the families finally reached Brevard. Both the children and their dads were equally excited for the change of pace. Truth be told, Jaiden and Peyton were burning out with the scope and depth of their medical practice in Erie. They welcomed the chance to slow down a bit after 20 years, but what they cherished more than anything was the ability to spend more time, more quality time with their children.
Peyton was excited about being able to help the children learn about the nature that would surround them. Jaiden was elated that he was seeing Peyton appearing so much happier than he had in recent days, and likewise for Peyton seeing Jaiden relaxing and being happy.
The first thing the adults did was turn the children loose in the front of their new home, sit on the downstairs porch, and drink coffee. Jaiden's mom, and Peyton's parents noticed that their sons were smiling again, something that thrilled their hearts to no end. Yeah, this change was going to be good for everybody.
The next Monday night, Jaiden and Peyton started their teaching assignments at Wellstone University teaching pre-medicine. They were determined to create a learning environment that made students enthralled in their studies, to learn beyond what they would normally learn in their courses as they prepared themselves for their life's vocation. They wanted to create an environment of excitement at Wellstone for their students, and they would involve the best of the best in being part of a mentoring program through their medical practice.
What started out as a hellacious event in their lives had seemingly was turning into a gold mine of excitement and participation by their students.
The movers had the furniture correctly in place, the satellite dish had been hooked up, and the medical office space had been purchased. The only thing left to do was get the office set up and opened. The news stations had covered the young doctor's move from Erie and they had a full slate of patients to see once they got their office going. Doing that was no simple feat, but they had been able to hire a staff that rivaled their staff in Erie.
Once again, the dads and their children were happy probably much happier than they had been in a long time.
When everybody awoke on Tuesday morning, there was a fresh blanket of snow covering everything, and the temperature, while cold, was not as brutal as the cold coming off Lake Erie. The families went to a local breakfast spot where the patrons feared their peace and quiet would be disturbed by the ten children who walked through the door. By the time people started exiting the restaurant, many asked the dads if the children were always so mannerly and quiet. Jaiden told the patrons that for the most part, the answer was yes, but that the children sometimes had their moments, not often, but sometimes. Today, the children were displaying their very best behavior.
There wasn't a shul in Brevard, but there was in Hendersonville, Agudah, previously an Orthodox shul that had morphed into a reform temple, something Jaiden and Peyton found appeasing for their family. It wasn't on a level playing field with Anshe Hesed, but it was a start. It was close by, the people were amazing, the children were accepted, and members clamored over who was going to teach Sunday school for the children. That alone was refreshing, refreshing in that so many people were willing to accept and serve Jaiden's, Peytons, Dale's, and Charlie's families.
There is something in Brevard that Jaiden loves and didn't have in Erie: an Oak swing hung with chains from the rafters on the downstairs veranda. He was sitting in the swing holding hands with Peyton, something he couldn't at their Erie home. He could sit in a chaise lounge chair and hold Peyton, but he couldn't hold hands with Peyton like he was doing now. As they swung slowly in the swing, Jaiden's eyes were closed as he was experiencing a peace he hadn't had in some time.
"Peyton, you know the overlook just up the road, the one where we saw the eagles last time we were here?" "Yeah, Jaiden. I loved that spot. It had a place to sit and look over the valley and it was so beautiful when the snow covered the area below. Roof tops, trees, forests, all covered in a beautiful blanket of snow. It was cold, but nothing like the cold coming off the lakes in Erie."
"Let's walk up to the overlook, Peyton, just you and me." "I would love that. Let me tell Dad so he can watch the boys for us."
Peyton went inside the house and reemerged about ten minutes later. "OK, Dad will watch the boys, so let's go." Jaiden walked with his head pointed slightly downward, a sweet smile crossing his face as he walked hand-in-hand with Peyton.
When they got to the overlook, eagles were riding the thermals, and there was nobody to be seen. The two sat on the iron bench just off the parking lot, still holding hands. Jaiden pulled his hand from Peyton's and placed it on Peyton's thigh, gently rubbing in and inching ever so slightly toward Peyton's crotch. When he reached the area of intent, he stretched out his little finger and began rubbing it over Peyton's bulge, which was formed into a nice Package inside his jeans. It wasn't but a brief moment before Peyton was sporting a dynamite erection.
"Peyton, would you like for me to take care of that for you?" "Yes, but is it safe to do it here on the bench." "Probably not, but there is another bench, if I remember correctly, a short distance down the path to the left, and it is relatively private and hidden between some bushes. The bears are hibernating, so we don't have to worry about them. Skunks may be a different problem though." "It can't be worse than Chuck stinking up the shower with his flatulence." "That's true. And speaking about the shower, do you think we ought to find a contractor to construct a shower like the one in Erie?" "It might not be a bad idea, Jaiden, but I wonder if the boys having to use a more private shower might help breed modesty on their part." "I didn't think of that, Peyton. You are probably right. Let's leave things the way they are for a while and see what happens and hope for the best." Peyton lifted Jaiden's hand to his lips and gently kissed it. For once in the past couple of weeks, both young men were completely relaxed -- and in love!
"Jaiden, what do you want to do tonight?" "Well, first we have to feed the children, then we have to get them bathed. And that ought to be fun because the water heater here isn't as big as the one at the house in Erie." "True, but the shower in the lodge is like the one in Erie and it has a humongous water heater. The boys can shower in the lodge and we can stay there until we add a bathroom or two to the house." "There's one thing about the boys having to bathe in cool water." "And that is, Jaiden?" "There won't be any erections to add to the bath time." "Babe, perish the thought of that. I don't think we'll have another problem with that, at least not for a few years. When we see their cheeks starting to stay rosy, then we'll know we are in for a trip around the world."
"That better be several years down the road. They're already horny enough as it is. And they are just hitting ten years old." "Jaiden, what are you going to do when they turn 13?" "Run away from home, Peyton."
"Can I go with you?" "Sure. I doubt the boys will notice at that point; they'll be too busy with the science of maturation." "Speaking of maturation, Jaiden, it reminded me to tell you that I bought a shovel at the hardware store today." "Why did you do that, Peyton?" "We had to have something to scrape the testosterone off the walls and floors in the house." Jaiden rolled his eyes and rubbed his face; he knew the reasoning was true. You can smell it, and you can feel it. That time has arrived.
They walked back home and Peyton washed himself off. Seems Jaiden got him all sticky - and totally relaxed.
"Daddy." "Yes, Nathan." "Can I take a bath by myself tonight." "I don't see why not, why do you want to do that?" "I don't want my brothers to see me naked anymore." Jaiden asked Nathan Robert what brought that change about, and Nathan said he didn't know, he just wanted to be more private about his body in the new house.
Jaiden thought, "there is a God," when Nathan said that, and he realized that the boys are growing up and maturing in the new home as he hoped they would. Hopefully this will continue with the other boys and they will feel the same way as Nathan, at least until they get into junior high and take gym. Then they'll have to shower with their classmates, a bridge they would cross when that time arrived.
"Jaiden, after the boys have their baths, then what do you want to do. You never told me."
"Well, Peyton, first I am going to remove every piece of your clothing. Then we are going to lie down on silk sheets and pretend we are back in our apartment at Wellstone cuddling the way we used to. I have missed that; just being able to snuggle up to you and do nothing but cuddle and smell the scent of your body and smell your hair."
"Jaiden, I am so sorry you have missed that. We should have made time for that to happen." We couldn't, Peyton. Being doctors is one thing, but also being hospital administrators was killing our time for each other, and we were starting to be miserable. We didn't even notice our boys were changing before our eyes, and tht hurt." "Agreed, love. We've slowed down now, we're not hospital administrators anymore, and we can make time for each other and the boys. It's time we start doing more as a family."
"We open our office on Monday, and we have a full schedule of patients." "True, but we don't have the hospital duties to tend to, so we should be a lot more relaxed when we get home." "Lord knows, I hope so. I couldn't keep going like we were in Erie. I just all of a sudden got tired, exhausted even." "I understand, babe, believe me; I was in the same situation and I wish we had talked about it sooner before everything went to hell in a breadbasket." "Peyton, we are going to have to be more careful about everything, especially our boys."
Jaiden and Peyton sat on the swing on the front veranda of the house as the children watched television inside the basement game room, something they didn't have in Erie. There was movie like seating with a projection TV, and a pool table. But most of all, there was a beautiful view of the moon lighting up the mountains in front of the house and providing a romantic setting for the dads. Charlie and Dale had joined Jaiden and Peyton on the veranda and seemed more relaxed than they had in ages. Charlie laid his head on Dale's shoulder, and Peyton leaned his head against Jaiden's. Before either of the dads realized it, they were lightly snoring, holding on to their lovers. Chuck went outside and woke the dads when the children were ready to go to bed; he was the only one of the boys with guts enough to wake the dads when they were asleep. This time it was different, though: the dads were in a good mood for the first time in a long while, and they weren't acting this time.
Jaiden and Peyton got their boys, and Charlie and Dale got their boys, and all headed for the lodge where the showers were; private but numerous enough for all the boys to shower alone. Unlike in Erie, they didn't walk to their rooms in the buff, they put on underwear and pajama pants before going into the bunk room. They would not repeat their mistake ever again. They learned, and they seemingly began maturing overnight and the dads were elated.
The boys chose their bunks, got into bed, and quickly went to sleep. About a hour later, a strange, loud noise outside that woke them up. It was a sound they hadn't heard before. Jaiden cut on the flood lights and the boys were able to watch a cat fight between two male bobcats fighting over a female. They were loud and they were fierce, and the boys were glued to the excitement. Finally, the bobcats ran off into the woods and everybody went back to bed. The next morning, Jaiden called a fence company to install a compound fence topped with razor wire in the back of the property for the children's safety. They would have twice the room to play that they had in Erie, and they would be able to see animals approaching the property before those animals tried to get into the yard where the children were playing.
The fence was installed before the weekend arrived and another company came out and built a fort for the boys, a fort complete with park-style swings, may poles, and a small basketball court with two hoops. There were sound devices designed to run off the more dangerous animals, and all the children had to do to activate the safety devices was push a button. One addition that Jaiden and Peyton were really proud of was a place that was built for the children to be able to sit and read books, something they enjoyed to the max.
Something that Peggy, Phyllis, and Jim noticed in their sons and in their grandchildren was a reduction of the stress that had seemed to rock their previous world. They were starting to act happier than they had in a long time. They needed to get away from the stress they were under and into a more calm environment, and they certainly seemed to have done that for themselves and for their children -- and it was noticeable to everyone.
The boys and Alaina had fallen back asleep and the dads were sitting in the main room of the lodge talking. They were making plans to find everything in the area that they could do with their children, things they didn't have in Erie. Swimming in mountain streams. Learning to fly fish and being able to teach that to their children. Learning the flora and fauna of the area they were now living in, meeting and getting to know new people in Brevard, and visiting pottery shops like the Mud Dabber to furnish their home in a North Carolina theme.
Their new office would have a mural of the children in their Ford uniforms on one wall, and Tony's mural on the other. Pictures of their children would adorn each exam room and hopefully make their new patients more comfortable when in the office. Somehow, people knowing they had children the ages of their patients seemed to promote calm among the patient's parents.
The move was because of something bad that happened, but it had certainly turned into something very good. And without the stress of Erie, the young doctors intended to keep it that way. And the design firm for the new office: Anderson-Leonard, Inc.
