"Peyton, why didn't we make this move several years ago? The difference in how I am feeling in just one week is unbelievable. I haven't been this relaxed in the past five years." "I know, love. I don't remember the last time I saw you so relaxed. Teaching at the University is going to make up for a large chunk of what we lost financially leaving the hospital, and the preparation for the classes won't be so time consuming; we already know the material."
"Look out in front of us. How beautiful is that? Snow covering the mountain valley, the yard blanketed in light snow, and a bearable cold temperature. This is so nice and so relaxing. The children are in the back compound and the razor wire will keep animals out so the kids can play to their hearts content without having to have an adult outside with them. That's freedom for them, and I hope they realize and enjoy that." "Jaiden, I'm sure they realize that. Just listen to them. They didn't laugh and yell like that in Erie." "No, they didn't, did they?"
Suddenly the dads jumped out of their chairs and ran through the house to get to the backyard. One of the children pushed the emergency button, and Jaiden and Peyton wanted to make sure everything was OK. When they got to the backyard, they noticed a bobcat stuck in the razor wire. Jim heard the ruckus and ran outside with a dart gun and got the animal square in its right hip, knocking him out in just a few minutes. He went outside the fence and removed the cat from the razor wire and sutured the cuts in the animals hide, gave him an antibiotic shot and laid him on the ground and gave him an antidote to the knock-out dart. A few minutes later, the bobcat awoke and took off up the mountain.
Jim said he doubted that animal would come back given how badly he was cut by the concertina wire. Peyton asked, "How many sutures did it take to repair his pelt, Dad?" "Exactly thirty. I know I am supposed to be retired, but I think I am going to offer to be a weekend emergency vet for the Department of Natural Resources. They are always needing help with injured animals, and I really enjoyed helping that cat." Jaiden told Jim he thought that was a good idea and that it would help Jim keep up his skills. And, it would be something different from what he did in Orange Beach.
Since it was a weekday, Jim went inside the house and called DNR headquarters in Raliegh. DNR officials were jumping all over Jim's offer and were willing to compensate him very well. And the best part was that they had a place in Brevard where he could work and they would bring the animals to him and make sure his office was furnished with whatever he would need to treat the injured and hurt animals. There was a rehab pen on the property that would allow for minimal contact with the animals while treating them to prevent them from getting used to being around humans and not having to forage for food. He had a surgical suite that was second to none where he could treat an as sundry of animals from small to large bears. He has an interest in mountain lions, so if he got to treat some mountain lions, that would be a caveat to his new position with the State of North Carolina. He couldn't be more fortunate than to walk right into a position he not only wanted, but loved. WOW!
Just like he let Peyton learn to help him in surgery in Orange Beach when he was growing up, if one of his grandchildren was interested in learning the way Peyton did, he would train his grandchildren as well. It is a win-win situation for everybody. When he talked to his grandchildren about the idea, they jumped at the chance to be able to do that. If any of Jaiden's and Peyton's university students were interested in veterinary medicine as a career, they also would be able to work with Jim to gain skills and knowledge that would help them to get into a good vet school.
When Jim told Phyllis about what he was about to embark on, she looked at him and said, "Damn it, you're retired Jim!" "Phyllis, I was retired. This is a golden opportunity to keep my hands in what I love to do. It shouldn't entail a lot of work, just some periodic assistance to injured animals. If it gets too busy for me, I'll simply tell them it is too much work for a retired old veterinarian." "Do you promise to do that if it gets to be too much work, Jim?" With his fingers crossed behind his back, he told Phyllis, "Yes, dear, I do!" What he really wanted to say was nope, and she knew it.
Jim went outside to spend time with the grandchildren, and when he did, Phyllis turned to Peggy and said, "Did you see his fingers crossed behind his back? He has no intention of pulling out of his arrangement if he gets too busy." Both ladies had a good laugh at what Phyllis said.
Peyton walked into the house and saw the way Phyllis was watching Jim. He knew that face well. "Dad just told you a lie, didn't he, Mom?" "Well, Peyton, he said if his new adventure got too busy for him, he would pull out of the arrangement and tell the state they needed to find someone else. What do you think, son?" "I think Dad shot you an unequivocal line of pontificated bovine fecal matter." Peggy grinned and asked Peyton what he meant by that. He looked at his mother-in-law and told her it meant that his dad shot his mom a line of pure bullshit! That is what he wants to do and that is what he is going to do: emergency wild animal veterinary medicine.
"I told ya, Peggy. That man will never stop working. It just ain't gonna happen!" Peggy did her usual laugh and clapping her hands. They were all enjoying their move to Brevard, and they were all starting to relax in ways even they didn't understand. Jaiden walked into the house as Phyllis said, "There is one thing for sure, I am not going to do books for his office and I am not going run the office." Jaiden looked at his mom and said, "Bull!" That comment garnered him an eat crap look and a laugh from his mother-in-law. Jaiden knew she couldn't control Jim if she wasn't with him, and she wasn't about to give up that power and influence. It just wasn't going to happen and Jaiden and Peyton knew that as fact -- and so did Jaiden's mom.
Chuck walked into the house and said, "SHIT!" Jaiden stopped him in his tracks and chastised him for using profanity, telling Chuck that it made him look less intelligent. Chuck replied, "Uncle Jaiden, I wasn't cussing. I was outside and fell in cat shit. It's all over me and that is what Grandpa called it." Jaiden closed his eyes, smiled and shook his head. Life was going to be interesting in Brevard with his in-laws living with him, Peyton, and the grandchildren. And Chuck was right, he was covered in cat poo, and he stunk!"
Phyllis sent him straight to the shower and put his dirty clothes in the washer. Charlie heard the commotion and Jaiden told him what happened. He walked to the lodge and got Chuck a clean change of clothes. He also commented, that seemed to work better than anything else to get Chuck to shower without an argument.
When Jim came into the house, Phyllis asked him why he let Chuck fall in cat poo. "I didn't let him fall in cat poo, Phyllis, I pushed him into it. I told him to go back inside the compound fence and he took his sweet time, so I helped' him to go inside the fence more quickly than he wanted to." "Love, Im glad you told me that. His crap covered clothes are in the washer, and when the washer stops, you can make sure the cat crap is off the clothes, and you can also put them in the dryer." Jim acted like he was pouting and said, "AW do I have too, Momma?" "The only answer he got from Phyllis was a curt yes. Peggy was about to slid down the wall laughing hysterically. Jim looked at Peggy and told her it wasn't that funny and she said the hell it wasn't. Peyton walked into the kitchen, handed his mother fifty dollars and said, "Here, Mom, you earned this. You were hilarious!" "Peyton!" "Yes, Mom."
"Go kiss Jaiden for me!" "Mom, not a chance while you are in the house. That will start something I can't control." Jaiden was walking toward the kitchen and heard what Phyllis told Peyton to do, and he heard Peyton's reply to his mom. By the color of his face, you could almost say with certainty he is a huge fan of the Crimson Tide. Yep, that red in the face with embarrassment, and his mom loved it!
"Phyllis, you know that when we are in the house, Jaiden only sleeps in a tee shirt and a pair of briefs. Let's have some fun tomorrow while he is outside with the children and sew the legs of his briefs shut." "Peggy, you should be ashamed! That is a brilliant idea. And right before he and Peyton go to bed, I can knock on the door and tell Peyton to kiss Jaiden while I am watching." "Ooo, Phyllis, that is so devious and sounds like so much fun.
The next night before heading to bed, Jaiden took a shower. Even though he and the other dads were bunking in the lodge with their kids, Peggy and Phyllis heard Jaiden yell, "What the hell?" and the two ladies high-fived each other. Jaiden tried to put on a pair of pants to walk to the house to find out who sewed his briefs shut. He yelled even louder when he discovered the ladies also sewed his pant legs shut."
The next morning at breakfast, Jaiden asked, "OK, who did it?" Peggy asked, "Who did what, son." "Mom, you know what I am talking about!" "Jaiden, I haven't the faintest idea of what you are talking about." And she said it with a straight face. Phyllis also denied involvement in the prank. Jim asked Jaiden what he was talking about, and when Jaiden told him someone sewed the legs of his briefs and pants shut, Jim started howling and said, "Hot damn, that is the best prank I have heard about in a long time." Jaiden replied, "Like putting itching powder in your boxers, Dad!" "Jaiden, you wouldn't dare!" to which Jaiden replied, "The hell I wouldn't!" Jim asked Peyton what he thought, and Peyton said, "I'm staying the hell out of this prank".
Abraham went over to his grandmother and appeared to whisper something in her ear. Jaiden asked his son what he said to his grandmother, and Abraham said he just gave his grandma a kiss on the cheek. What the boy actually did was tell his grandma, "Good one, Grandma."
For dinner that night, Jaiden bought steaks for everybody. They would grill the steaks at the lodge next to the house, have rosin baked potatoes rolled in rock salt, and, of course, grilled asparagus. There was a gorgeous little eating area outside the lodge overlooking the valley to the front of the property that allowed for a comfortable time of relaxation. Jaiden was the most relaxed that his mother had seen him in ages. It was the same for Peyton. Even the children seemed different, like they were truly enjoying being in the mountains and having the entire mountain as a playground.
After the families had dinner, they were laying back in the Adirondak chairs in the front of the lodge when Jaiden noticed the eagles that he and Peyton love so were gracefully riding the thermals. "Look at the eagles riding the thermals, have you ever seen anything more beautiful?" Jim being Jim replied he had. Peyton asked his dad what was more beautiful than the eagles they were watching. "A big, nice, brown turkey on the Thanksgiving table." Phyllis looked at Jim and spoke in a tone that told him that she didn't think what he quipped was funny. The look on his face showed he got her message loud and clear.
"Jaiden, I told you, didn't I?" "You sure did, Peyton, and it was done in short order." Peyton had told Jaiden how Phyllis could control Jim when she needed to, he just hadn't ever seen her do it, and he enjoyed watching her skilled control of certain situations.
"Hey guys, would you like to ride up to the overlook and watch the eagles there? The children jumped at the idea and the dads drove up the road to the park. There they could see the eagles more clearly, and they were mesmerized by the gracefulness of the birds.
"Daddy, look! That eagle has spotted something and I think he is about to go after it." "What makes you think that, Elijah?" "That eagle is focusing on something, Daddy; look how he has tightened his circle and is looking down." Just about the time Elijah said that, the eagle made an incredible dive and disappeared into the cover of the trees. A vey seconds later, he took back to the air with a small fox in his grasp. Elijah was right in his thoughts about the eagle, and to Jaiden, it showed he had been studying the birds and knew what to watch for. "Elijah, you're gonna have to tell grandpa what you saw. He will be really interested in learning how you knew that eagle was going to go after that small animal."
"OK, boys, the sun is going down, so we need to get back to the house. We can watch the eagles again tomorrow."
When everyone arrived back at the house, Elijah went running inside yelling, "Grandpa, Grandpa, you should have seen that eagle swoop down and catch a small fox. I told Daddy he was going to do it, and he did." "Elijah, how did you know that eagle was going to go after a small animal?" "Grandpa, he started flying in a smaller circle and was looking down watching something. And then, all of a sudden, he went speeding toward the grown and disappeared in the trees. Daddy and I watched where he went and he came back up with a small fox in his claws."
Elijah, do you know what his claws are called?" "No, Sir." "They are called talons, and they are very sharp. When an eagle catches a small animal, it is almost impossible for that animal to get away from the eagle. Something else an eagle will do is bite the animal in the back of his neck to paralyze the animal so he can't move while the eagle takes it back to his nest for his dinner." Two days later, there was a nice telescope sitting on the veranda of the house for the children to use while watching birds and animals. And there was a pair of binoculars for the dads to use. Life has certainly slowed, become more enjoyable, and more educational for the children.
After the children went to bed, Jaiden sat in the middle of the swing on the veranda and pulled Peyton sideways onto his lap. He very lovingly leaned his head downward and kissed his husband ever so lightly and sniffed and stroked Peyton's hair. Peyton closed his eyes and seemed to enter a Utopian existence, and Jaiden kept his nose in his husband's hair which drives him just as crazy today as it did when they were in college at Wellstone.
Jaiden stuck his hand under Peyton's shirt and very lightly rubbed his chest and stomach eliciting a measurable response out of his lover. He didn't intend to stop what he was doing, and when he and Peyton went to bed, their closeness would become even more pronounced. Peyton could count on it. They would make love for the first time in a long while.
When the dads awoke the next morning, they took a walk up to the overlook to sit in the cool mountain air and gaze over the valley. The night had been incredibly romantic, and a closeness they hadn't had in a long time returned to the forefront of their lives. There was no mistaking that they were once again very happy.
