Greg Patrick

The FOX News friends got word of what the Rileys' and the Reynolds' got involved in and with in Brevard, and they show up a Jaiden's new home to interview all concerned.

"Jaiden, how can you and Peyton do what you do for children and maintain civility in your minds and hope in your hearts? How do you always seem to find forgiveness after the major battles?"

"Eric, the best way I can answer your question is to say this: Forgiveness is not for the person who hurts children, it is for me; for me to be able to deal with situations that are so close to the hearts of everyone in my family. I could stay angry, and so could Peyton, but the only thing that would come from that is our personal misery, and I'll be damned if I am going to let someone have that kind of control over me. It will not happen!"

"Things take time to fully resolve and that time starts with a conversation. It has to be a slow process to rebuild a relationship that someone has destroyed by their behavior. You must work to rebuild trust. People have to get involved in issues that precipitated their bad behaviors, issues that caused physical or mental harm to others. One may struggle with one's past, but one must learn to show up for those whom they have hurt in a myriad of ways. A person has to create symbols of change and then effect that change in order to positively affect the lives of those around them. When you are at your lowest, you have to look around to see who is actually supporting you in your darkest hours and emulate their behaviors to help others overcome the dismal existence in which they may be or may have been mired. Do what you must to make your and everyone else's situation better, and then praise the people who helped you get to where you needed to be."

"Build pride not only in yourself, but into the lives of everyone around you. Yes, you may have people around you who are willing and able to help you escape a bad situation. But I think people sometimes loose face of the fact that they sometimes must make the first step toward effecting change to affect lives. That is what really matters, taking the first step to effect change for others so that change can affect their lives. Come with me for a second."

"Look up at the sky. Every star you see represents an individual possibility for change. Every star, and look how many there are. How badly do you want things to change for the better. I've learned through everything I have had to face that the hardest battles are the ones worth fighting, and no matter how dark it may get, there is always a light at the end. Courage is not about never being afraid, but being willing to stand up when you are. And no matter how bad things may become, it is about choosing love over fear, and forgiveness over bitterness. No matter how far a person may have fallen, they can always rise again. The only problem for children is that rising from where they have been can be infinitely harder for the child than it is for an adult. We, as adults, have to be -- we must be -- there for our children. When it comes to helping a child, have the courage to get off your butt and stand up and defend a child no matter how the odds that may seem to be stacked against you."

"Jaiden, every time I have interviewed you or Peyton, you each have taught us very valuable lessons. You always do that no matter what, and today is no exception."

"Eric, the person who taught me to be a person of courage in standing up for children, for doing the right thing because it is very simply the right thing to do, is my mom, Dr. Peggy Reynolds. Have you ever met her?" "No Jaiden, we have never been afforded that privilege." "Hold on for just a minute, Eric."

"Mom, can you come outside for a minute and meet my friend Eric from Fox News." "Jaiden, I could shoot you! I don't have a smidgen of makeup on and I am only dressed in a pantsuit." "Mom, I've told you before, you are a beautiful Jewish woman who doesn't need makeup, and you are wearing the red pantsuit like the one you had on that time at Wellstone when a fellow student wanted a date with you until he found out you were my mother. Don't you remember laughing about that?" Peggy laughed and didn't say a word to answer Jaiden' question, she just walked out onto the veranda, held her hand out, and said, "Eric, I am Peggy Reynolds, Jaiden's mom. It is so nice to finally meet you." "Dr. Reynolds, it is nice to finally meet you as well!" "Eric, did I introduce myself as Dr. Reynolds, or as Peggy Reynolds." "Yes, mam, I stand corrected."

Peggy, what was Jaiden like as a child?" "Well, stubborn comes to mind. Incredibly focused was one of his attributes. He was honest to a fault, and he didn't back down when he was right about something. Anything he faced, he had to do it on his own, and resolve his issues on his own. He didn't want my help in those tasks, and I knew better than to try to intervene and stick my head into his business. If I tried that, he got very quiet and wouldn't say a word. And he hated talking and watching television, preferring to have his nose stuck in a good book. Now that I did encourage."

"In all of the things he and Peyton have done to help abused and disadvantaged children, did he ever discuss those things with you beforehand." "Eric, he would never do that. He will simply do what he thinks is the right thing to do, and then he will tell me about everything afterwards. Eric, my son is a brilliant, compassionate young man, and I can't begin to describe how proud I am of him." At that moment, Jim walked onto the veranda to bring everybody some coffee Dale had made. Eric asked if that was Dale's famous coffee, and Jim said it was Dale's newest famous coffee. "And that would be, Dr. Riley?" "Eric, first off, I'm Jim, Peyton's dad. Secondly, the coffee is called GATA Fusion that is roasted by a barista in Statesboro, Georgia, for Georgia Southern University. Dale's friend Greg sent him some, and that is all we have been drinking since."

"Jim, what kind of coffee bean is a GATA bean?" Jim howled at that question. "Eric, there is no such thing as a GATA coffee bean. This coffee is a specially roasted Arabica bean. Gata is a football term at Georgia Southern that stands for "Get At That Ass! Or easier and more nicely said, GATA." "I have to hand it to Greg for sending Dale the bag of coffee, this stuff is more than smooth. It's better than the KONA coffee Dale used to brew." "Well, drink up, there's more where that came from."

The following evening, the Amigos once again made national news for their defense of Marcus. And Leon and Peter were the talk of Erie for becoming the new parents for Marcus. Proud new parents. The phone bank in Jaiden's, Peyton's, and Peggy's new office was flooded with calls from parents wanting an appointment for their children to be seen by the "amazing", new doctors. Was moving to Brevard a mistake for all concerned? Nope, not in the least. It's the best thing they have done in a long time.

When Jaiden and Peyton got home, Nathan Robert ran up to them to let them know Marcus wasn't feeling good and was having a problem in his private area. Peyton went to him and asked what was wrong, and Marcus said his balls were hurting. Jaiden came into the room and he and Peyton had Marcus lower his pants and underwear. When Peyton saw Marcus' testicles, they were horribly swollen.

"Marcus, what happened. Did someone hit you in your testicles?" "Uncle Peyton, before Daddy Leon and daddy Peter adopted me, my other dad had grabbed my balls and squeezed them really hard. Then he yanked them really hard. They swelled up a little bit, but today they got really big and started hurting real bad." "Jaiden, call the police and have them meet us at the emergency room."

Peyton and Leon put Marcus in the Lincoln and headed to the hospital with Jaiden and Peggy right behind them. The emergency room doctor examined Marcus and ordered a CAT scan with contrast. The results weren't good. Marcus' testicles were severely bruised and one was slightly hemorrhaging. Marcus was admitted to the hospital for observation and his privates were packed in ice to try to stem the bleeding. Four hours later, the CAT scan was repeated and the bleeding had slowed significantly, but still had a little way to go before it stopped entirely.

The police officers who met Leon at the hospital took a report of what happened and immediately called the judge in the case who then issued an arrest warrant for Marcus Jennings Sr. for child sexual abuse. This charge, when he is sentenced for it, will insure he is never released from prison, at least not alive. Television news reported on the new offense Jennings is facing, and there was much unrest with the inmates at the jail. They would do almost anything to get to Jennings at this point, something like poisoning his food, or planting a shive in his back -- several times!

Marcus Jennings wasted no time in pleading guilty to his new offense, for which the judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. For all intents and purposes, Marcus Jennings no longer existed in the modern world. His older sons were serving twenty years in prison, and they would have to serve seventy-five percent of their time before being eligible for parole. Their sentence might not have been so long had they shown some semblance of regret over what they did repeatedly to their younger brother. If they had just said they were sorry; but sadly, they didn't and they weren't.

When Marcus Sr's case finally went to court, his sons tried to testify on his behalf, but their stories were so concocted and rehearsed that they were unbelievable. They issued veiled threats against Jaiden and Peyton, and Jaiden asked for the Court's permission to address those threats, permission that was granted. Jaiden's statement was this: "Your honor, these two miscreants, boils on the butts of society, and their father have issued several veiled threats toward me and my spouse. I would like to let them know that their threats have fallen on deaf ears, and that neither I nor my spouse are afraid of two little boys who each have a one-inch tongue and a half inch dick and no idea how to use either one!"

Judges are not supposed to show emotion of any kind from the bench, but today there would be an exception when the judge died laughing at Jaiden's comment and said that it was the truest statement the court had heard in a long time. There was a short rebuke for the judge that was handed down a week later by the judicial ethics commission.

The commission, in its infinite wisdom, concluded that while the judge may have been correct in stating the individuals may in fact have been individuals with a one inch tongue and a half-inch penis with no idea how to use either one, the Judge in question should not have made the statement he made about the three long-tongued, short-dicked defendant's in his court room, even though the ethics commission fully agreed with the judge's assessment of the three men.

The media had a field day with the commission's ruling which in effect upheld the truth of the courts statement while at the same time chastising the court for publicly making such a statement. The inmates at the jail were having a marvelous time bullying the Jennings men about having one-inch tongues and half-inch dicks. There were numerous, consistent offers from their fellow inmates to teach the men how to use their tongues and their half-inch dicks to please their fellow inmates, or maybe each other.

The evening news on television carried a story about the ethic commission's ruling, and the viewer responses to the story were hilarious all the way around. It would become the television's top news segment of all time and earn the station top Neilson Ratings honors.

Jim was proud of his boys. They had made the lives of the Jennings men hell on earth in the Brevard County Jail. Inmates working details in the community would stop what they were doing, stand at attention, and applaud anytime they saw Jaiden, Peyton, Jim, Dale, Charlie, or Peggy riding by. Inmates would literally escort Peggy around the town square to protect her when they were outside working, and not one person in authority would say anything to the inmates for doing that.

The Amigos truly respected the inmates for rallying around Marcus they way they did. So, Jaiden and family, the large family, made arrangements for the inmates to have grilled Porterhouse steaks, rosin baked potatoes, and grilled asparagus and sauteed green beans for their Christmas dinner. Every county inmate also had $100.00 deposited in their store account so they could purchase what ever snacks they would want for the year.

It was the damnedest thing the people of Brevard had ever seen. Lawyers doing pro-bono appeals for the inmates, or working on parole applications, and people showing up to urge the parole board to parole non-violent offenders. Marcus' situation had brought a lot of good, a tremendous amount of forgiveness, and total support for scores of inmates in the county jail.

If the need ever presented itself, the Amigos and their families would have personal protection around the clock. There wouldn't be any guns around, but rest assured, there would be a number of legal weapons at the inmate's disposal to protect the people who had been so good to them. Make no mistake about that fact!

That night, there was going to be a surprise for the children, especially for Marcus. Tony was throwing a celebratory dinner for them at his Ruth Criss' Steakhouse. The adults would be getting spaghetti, and the children would be getting mall, grilled Porterhouse steaks. They would be celebrating their good fortunes in style. At the dinner, Tony let it be known that, like he had done for the Amigo's children, he had also established a college scholarship for Marcus. He would be able to attend any college he wanted to attend as long as he made the grades to get into that university.

Jaiden, Peyton, and Peggy were walking back to the office from lunch on the town square. Their trip back to the office took them past the exercise yard at the jail while the inmates were outside. The trio cracked up when they heard and inmate yell at the Jennings crew, "Hey assholes, molested or beaten up any children today? Get your ass whipped good today?"

One of the inmates saw the trio walking by, and the inmate who yelled out the crass questions called out to Peggy to apologize for saying that and her hearing it. Since it is a felony to talk to inmates in the yard or on work details, Peggy acted like she had dropped something and bowed toward the inmates as if to pick up what she had supposedly dropped. They got her non-reply loud and clear.

Jaiden, you know what, I think I'm going to apply to be the medical director for the jail and see the inmates weekly to take care of their needs. I think that if we do that and treat them like we want to be treated, it will make a huge difference in their lives when they are released from jail. Peyton and Jaiden agreed and said they would also like to be a part of the medical team for the jail, and they didn't want to stop there, they would also work with juvenile offenders in the YDC.

The idea of doing that got the wheels turning in Jaiden's and Peyton's heads. They got with Charlie and Dale and approached Wellstone about starting a college program for the inmates in the jail. The inmates could earn their GEDs, and they could also start working toward a college degree that would help them to become gainfully employed upon release from jail. Something else Jaiden wanted the university to do was study the rates of recidivism among inmates who earned college degrees.

The inmates couldn't believe what the Amigos and Peggy wanted to do for them. They approached the Warden about a slight change to their prison wear: They wanted to get colored tee shirts that said Brevard County Jail on the front with a picture of the Amigos and Peggy on the back with the words, "People We love Because They Dared to Love US."

The Warden told Jaiden about the inmate's request and he said, "Warden, if you can do that for those men, I'll pay to buy the tee shirts and have the picture and inscription they want printed on the back. The deal was sealed, and within two weeks, all of the inmates were proudly sporting their new jail shirts.

A funny thing happened after the Amigos and Peggy started supporting the inmates: no more fights, no more major disagreements, no more balking at work details, and no balking whatsoever at working toward their GEDs or a college diploma. The inmat es had become serious at self-improvement and future success, all because two young doctors and one doctor's mother dared to try and make a difference for the better in their lives.
