March Stephenson
Chapter 82
Maxieplus.
I sat and took all the fuss in. I didn't feel left out and I saw Bob look at Mike a few times. He had told me once that Bob was very quiet at school he may not even remember him, but wow what a heartbreaker he's going to be.
Shaun was playing with Mason he was showing him how to ride 'hank' but the kid was too big for him. Mase had no trouble trotting around though.
Rachael had Rosie now and was kissing and talking to her, and Rose stared at me.
"What?"
"You know what, and I am not talking to you anyway."
Rachael started laughing.
"Is this because of the post?"
"How did you know?" May asked.
"I joined the page May. I just don't comment. It is a tie to my hometown, and Nicky it's been a pleasure to read how you terrorise this great lug." She pointed to March.
"Now hold on there, you have only been in town for ten minutes and your throwing accusations at me." March laughed.
Jason came back out and was introduced, Rachael made faces at May. He went into the cafe again and when he left she yelled.
"Winner." She said and laughed. I guess she fancied Jase, or was happy for May. When I looked at May she didn't look too happy.
Rose handed the cottage keys over to her and said she had lit the fire earlier so it would be nice and warm.
"It's still cold at night so don't let it burn down."
"Thank you, my friend." She looked in her bag and took an envelope out.
"This is the first month's rent." Rose took it which surprised me.
Mike was still quiet I watched him slump and I heard a sigh. He got up and excused himself and walked across the road. Dad had already gone and was pumping gas, Bobby watched him.
"There's a gym here Bobby, you should join up."
"I will mum, when we settle in."
"The man of the house, he's such a good kid." She said.
"And tall, when did you get so tall Bobbins?" March said.
"I grew up Uncle March, and I see you haven't lost your lousy sense of humour."
"Never going to happen kiddo. You have an appointment with Nudge this Monday he will see you right."
"Thank you Uncle March, I was worried I might not get a job."
"Not in this town, there will always be work for you." March smiled and I think he was a little taken with his Bobbins.
Lily and Bree were talking up a storm, and did I hear sleepovers mentioned?
Some kids had joined them and I figured they remembered Bree then some boys came to talk to Shaun. One of the boys was Mike's brother Mitchell and I can see they were also old friends.
"What's with Mike, March. He seemed a little put out?" I whispered to him.
"I don't know Nicky. Maybe it's all too overwhelming for him."
"Maybe." I sat back and then I said.
"Well Rachael Bobby, it's been good to finally put faces to names, welcome back. But I must get our boy home. My feet are cold."
I kissed March and told him I would see him later, then May. I stared at Rose then bent down and kissed her, she winked. I knew she wasn't mad at me, it's just a game. I collected Mase and 'hank' grabbed Sunny's leash and walked towards the gym. Taking my laptop and bag I got them into the car and March ran over the road.
"Nicky can I go with Rach to get the kids settled in?"
"Of course you can March, I will see you at home." I kissed him again.
I had a sudden foreboding feeling things were going to change around here.
Mike was leaving the garage when I started the car, and I take everything back I said about him. He had his jeans and a t-shirt on, he had lost some weight. Maybe it's just the overalls that make him look larger than he is. I might buy him some smaller sizes for his birthday. I then noticed he took a bag out of his car and went into the gym. I had no idea he was using it, he never signs in, good for him.
I drove home and settled my baby and dog, then I started on dinner. It will be mum's roast tonight. I made sure 'sheep' and 'chook' had enough to eat when I took Mase around to say hello to them, then the TV went on. I stoked the fire made the beds and turned the blanket on. Sitting at the table I read some comments and looked at some photos, which were new. Yes Rachael and her family were back home at long last, and there was more than one snapshot of Bobby, the hearts were flowing through thick and thin, March had better watch out, that kid was going to be popular.
I fed Mason some roast and then I had mine, the message I got said it was taking longer than expected. Mase was fast asleep and tucked up in his bed as I waited quietly, I showered and went to bed around ten. He rolled in around eleven, I could hear him in the kitchen, maybe he is hungry again. I slept soundly and woke up feeling like I had a hangover. I heard Sunny barking and went to let him out. I put the coffee on, then checked in on Mase. He was wet so I wiped him down and changed him. March slept on and when he finally came out I was almost ready to go.
He kissed us all then he apologised for getting in late.
"That's okay March I understand."
"We had so much to talk about and after I unloaded the van I helped her put everything away. Rose had left food so we ate after the kids went to bed."
"I thought I heard you eating when you got back home?"
"Just a snack." He grinned.
"Okay I'm ready to go and your breakfast is in the oven, I will see you at work."
"Nicky?"
"Yes March?"
"What's going on?"
"Nothing, but it's past eight-thirty and I have to get to work."
"That late?" He looked at his watch.
"I had better run."
"Don't forget to finish your breakfast." I smiled and then walked my troop to the car.
Sitting in the sunshine with May this morning, she was pretty quiet.
"I thought Bob and Mike were friends at school they sure didn't act like friends yesterday."
"I think they were Nicky, Mike said something about being happy he was coming back."
"I heard that too, very puzzling."
"Are you going to be gentle with my overly excited brother Nicky?"
"What do you mean May?"
"Well he and Rachael were okay friends at school and they will be catching up a bit because of her kids. You mentioned he didn't come home until eleven. I thought you may be a little put out that's all."
"I was, but I also understand May. I figured when Jan and Joel all start hanging with her again, March will have time for his family once more."
"So you are put out?"
"A little, but change is a good thing too. Maybe we were just in a routine and I was a bit uncomfortable that it shifted so fast."
"She can manipulate him Nicky. Between you and me she was always relying on March when she had trouble. I always thought they would end up together when we were at school. I didn't see that other fool coming. He swept her off her feet, we warned her all the time he was no good. But she didn't listen. And Nicky, it's not her that March is excited to see, it's the kids. We used to babysit them all the time when things got a bit heavy at their house, Bobby would land on our doorstep. March bonded with them, but she did use him up quite a lot. I'm not saying be careful, just be aware that it's the kid's March is wanting to hang with, not her."
"Maybe it's guilt on March's part, maybe he feels like he should do more for her."
"Maybe Nicky, but watch he doesn't get pulled back into her drama please. Her husband was mean, but she was meaner. Not everything you see is real Nicky, and by his actions last night she is starting her poor me act on him again?"
"I will stay alert May, it won't last anyway. I will say Bobby looked a bit overly stressed when they arrived."
"That would be her doing Nicky."
I waited but March didn't turn up for work. I rang him several times but there was no answer. When he did turn up I had already ordered lunch and Mason was at play school.
"Sorry. I got caught up dad," He kissed me and sat with Mike, dad and me, May turned and looked into the cafe. I felt she wasn't all that happy with her brother.
"Rach's van wouldn't start so I went to get it going, then she wanted some
furniture moved and I talked to the kids a bit."
"That's okay son, Mike and I have your back. I have booked six cars in over next week so you will have to be on deck for them."
"Mason is away from play school, so we will all have to be extra vigilant," I said.
"He can come over here with me Nicky. we can always find something to do." May said.
March got a text, he smiled then ordered meals from mum.
I had finished eating, and I knew what was coming. So I grabbed Mason and said I had work to do. I winked at May and she turned her back on March again, she was pretending she was watching the cafe.
The van turned up just as Mike caught up with us. I didn't wave and he and us went into the gym.
"So you have been working out Mike?"
"Yes Nicky, I thought I had better get back into some sort of training again."
"You trained before?"
"Yes, when we went to grans there was nowhere for me to go, so I didn't bother."
"Well it's showing, I noticed yesterday."
"With the renovations and working here, I have lost some puppy fat but I'm eager to lose more."
"Can I ask you what's up with Bobby and you?"
"He doesn't remember me, he was a loner at school but I thought we were friends in a sort of way. I would sit with him at lunchtime but now he seems different, or should I say distant,"
"Maybe it's his upbringing, he always did look a bit stressed." He added.
"Well he's okay now, maybe he's just a bit embarrassed to talk to you."
"I don't know Nicky, what's up with March?"
"What do you mean?"
"He's not his old funny self, has something happened?"
"No. But I think the kids coming back to town has got him all excited. He will calm down soon."
"Good because I like the funny March."
He walked off and I smiled, it's not just me it seems that everyone around me is affected.
I watched from my desk as March laughed and talked to his old friend. I didn't see any of her other school friends turning up either, only May and she has disappeared. I did something I never thought I would ever do. Before I went to pick Mason up I rang Tom.
"If you could Tom, I would be so grateful."
"You're the boss Nicky. I will see that it's done."
"Thank you." I hung up and put my jacket on. I had got him to send someone else to clean our place. I didn't want Rachael in it, not before I had checked her out thoroughly. I went across the road and tapped March on the shoulder.
"Mason's pick up March."
"Nicky, it's nice sitting here, can you get him?"
"Of course I can," I walked off up the street and I heard laughing.
Now. I'm not the jealous type, but I hope that wasn't directed at me. He's done no work today, and it looks like he isn't going to do any at all. Picking Mason up is a pleasure, at least he still loves me. He kissed and hugged me then Sunny who had come for the walk with me. He's not a very good conversationalist but he barks at the passing cars when required.
I walked across the road and when I got back to the gym Mason ran off calling for his daddy.
I had to explain to him, his dad had something to do and we would see him at home. Nudge was doing his afternoon workout and I spotted Joel on the walker. I sidled up to him and said.
"You can tell me now."
"Tell you what Nicky?"
"Why you're all avoiding Rachael, I thought you were all friends?"
He laughed then replied.
"God no. She was March and May's friend, why, I could never work out. She is a bit needy, but they did love the kids."
"I thought she was part of your group."
"Not really, she tried, but we didn't want that train wreck near us."
"Train wreck?"
"Her boyfriend, and Nicky I have to say this, be careful. She would have March moving in with her if she had her way. I know by the look on your face you have already worked out she's a bit of a user."
"I have, and you just confirmed it. She's manipulating March's time, he hasn't done a stitch of work today."
"There's your heads up Nicky, be careful not to alienate her, but be firm with March. Sometimes he needs a little firmness." He grinned at me.
"Not lately." I grinned back.
So I am armed and dangerous, I won't break up the friendship but I will monitor it over the next few days and make an assessment. If his attention is still on her and the kids. I will pull the plug, in a nice Nicky sort of way.
Once again I loaded up my car with my two companions. I looked across the road he wasn't aware that we were going home, but Rachael was, she waved.
I did my usual thing and prepared dinner, fed Mason and talked to mum on the phone. She was also very concerned and wanted to know if I needed help.
This isn't what I wanted, I needed to handle this myself and then if it goes pear-shaped I will be the only one responsible.
Again I went to bed alone, and again he came in around eleven. They had been playing cards and I knew by the way he was acting he was feeling guilty about something. He didn't cuddle up to me, and he didn't say good night.
It's the small things I notice, the things that are out of character. I nearly lost it when he sat down for breakfast and his phone rang
"Again. You need to get a better car."
"I will keep my eye out for one then."
They chatted on for another ten minutes and I became a little edgy.
"Hang up March your breakfast is getting cold."
"What? uh? hang on Rach." He looked at me.
"What did you say?"
"I said hang up, your breakfast is getting cold."
"in a minute Nicky I'm talking."
"Well I'm talking to you now, so finish your call and eat your breakfast."
"I had better go. I think I'm in trouble. I will call by on my way to work and get you started again." He hung up.
"Is something wrong Nicky?"
"No, but don't you think you had better do some work today?"
"I'm only getting her car started." I stared at him and then got up to wash my dishes.
"I will see you at work, don't be long those cars will start to come in today."
"I won't, Nicky are you all right?"
"I'm just fine March, Mason get your things, work time."
"Shit, I'm late again." He laughed.
I kissed him goodbye, it was like kissing a stranger.
"See you at work."
I drove carefully to the gym. Dad and Mike were out the front of the cafe and when I organised my small army we walked across to get a roll.
Mason kissed everyone and wanted some chips, so I grabbed them with a dollop of gravy.
I got stared at, but I smiled. March won't be too far away.
No show for two hours and lunchtime was looming, she had followed him again and I could see them laughing. Mum sat with them to have her coffee, but I didn't go over I was too busy looking at the local page.
'Troubles back in town'
'Watch your husbands'
'One already snared, and one well-known spunk not very happy'
There were only a few comments, and all of them were anonymous postings.
I did think people were holding off because of the kids, and maybe me.
I took Mason to play school then walked down to the cafe. I said good morning to Rachael and got myself a coffee. I watched two cars turn up, and dad was standing in the doorway with his hands on his hips looking across the street. March didn't budge, he was too busy laughing. I sighed and started to go across the road. I also noticed their conversations were always about the kid's quirky ways.
"See you at lunchtime Nicky," She sang out.
I turned and agreed with her.
"Yes. See you at lunch." That is never going to happen.
I got in my car and drove off. I needed some me time and the clearing welcomed me with it's bright colours. It was trying so hard to come back. I sat on that big rock and looked into the water as I remembered the wonderful times March and I had spent there.
The time passed and so did lunch as I sat. Eventually, my ass got numb, so I started making my way to play school, and my only constant love. It was
another shock, but I took it on the chin. Both Rachael and March had Mason and Sunny. They were leaving the school hand in hand, that's Mason's hand. No shoulder rides just swinging my son back and forth. I drove to the gym and parked. Dad came in and asked if March was coming to work. I told him probably not. I felt sorry for him, then I went to grab my son.
"March. Dad's waiting for you."
"I'm having the day off, and probably tomorrow Nicky. I have to go car hunting for Rachael."
"I see," I turned towards Rachael she was smiling. I was about to say something but I spied mum standing by her window, so I changed tact.
"You had better tell dad and Mike that March."
"I will, don't be so mean."
"When do you start work, Rachael?"
"This Monday. I believe I have your house on my list March." That's it.
"Not anymore." I smiled turned on my heels and left with my baby and dog.
It took him all of five minutes to follow me. Mase had gone to see Mike, and I sat and logged into March's banking. I reported his cards stolen then shut it down. There is no way we are buying her a new car. That is never going to happen, kids or no kids.
"What's the matter with you, why were you so mean to Rachael?"
"I don't want her inside my home, so I rang Tom to get a different cleaner for us."
"That's a bit off Nicky." Red red red I saw red.
"If you think for one minute I would have that user in my home looking through our private things, then think again." He blanched because he had never seen this side of me...much.
"Nicky?"
"And another thing, if you come home at eleven tonight or any other night, you won't be able to get in. I will be deadlocking all the doors and windows at six. You get in that garage and help with the work and go home at your normal time."
"Nicky, I was just welcoming her back home, we are having fun."
"Then go and have fun then. I'm sure you are the best of friends by now."
"We sort of are Nicky," Even he doesn't believe they are good mates.
Before he turned to walk across the road again I stopped him.
"One more thing before you go, March Stephenson. I have reported all your cards stolen, so if you think you are going to buy her a car tomorrow, fucking well think again." I viciously screamed at him.
"Nicky, did you really do that?"
"Yes I fucking well did. Now get to work or go back and sit with your one and only mate in town."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You bloody know what it means. Everything was perfect around here before she turned up."
"I can't believe you cancelled my cards,"
"Don't forget your cleaner also March."
"Where's Mason?"
"In with Mike.'
"I'm taking him across the road for afternoon tea."
"Not in this lifetime, he needs a nap. And by the way, if you ever take anyone but me or his immediate family to pick him up again, I will tie you to a tree and fuck the life out of you."
"Nicky?" He rubbed his neck.
I heard clapping, and the phones were out. He looked towards the guys and girls and was speechless.
"You have been told Stephenson, you're married to Nicky, not that loser."
"But we were just having some fun guys."
"That isn't the way we all see it, we knew you were dumb but not that bloody dumb," Joel said.
"What?"
"She's having another lend of you March. Nicky what time do you lock the doors tonight?"
"Six Joel."
"Good, then I will be there about quarter to, if March doesn't want you I will take you to the moon and back in his place."
"Joel?" I started laughing at March's face he was furious and walked out the door. I watched him walk past the tables and into the cafe, mum followed him to the back.
"Do you think he got the message?"
"Shit Nicky you were a bit full on, I told you not to alienate her."
"I had to do something, and my experience with March is to push back, and push back harder Joel."
"Did you really cancel his cards?"
"Of course I did, what sort of a husband would I be if I didn't look after him and his investments."
"Come on dad, Mike, afternoon tea." I sang out then turned to my audience and said.
"The next show will be at six outside my place, thank you all for coming."
I walked with them across the road Rachael was still sitting there. I suppose we have to sit with her. I went to get our coffees because mum had disappeared. When I got back the guys were talking about the cars, Mason was again on 'hank' and the only person missing was March.
"I'm sorry Nicky, I didn't think you would get upset."
"Look Rachael I don't have anything against you, I don't even know you. But, March isn't your husband, or the kid's father, and he's certainly not a roving bank. He is my husband and Mason's father and his sole purpose in life is to look out for us. If you need something done with that car. I will get Mike to take you around the car yards and you buy the one you want. You won't be doing any cleaning for us, but Tom will see that you have plenty of work."
"So you're pushing me out of his life then."
"Got it in one, he's not the kid's father, he's Mason's daddy."
"Is that even legal?"
"What?" I heard coming from behind me.
"I thought gay marriages were just a laugh. I didn't know they were legal." She had the nerve to smirk.
"Come on Nicky, Mike look after my boy." He dragged me up off the seat and almost pushed me across the road. Through the gym to the tune of much clapping and cheering and into the small shed within the large shed.
"Tell me again."
"Tell you what?"
"The bank the cleaning, the tree all those things."
"I am going to tie you to the nearest tree and fuck the life out of you. I have also reported your cards stolen, and cancelled your cleaner." That was all I got out and his mouth was on mine.
"I love you so much Nicky, you do scare me though."
"You scared me too March."
"Fuck get naked, I have to have it now." I have turned him on by being mean, that's one for the books. He was hard as a rock and we made love for a lot more than ten minutes.
More clapping greeted us and once again I bowed.
"Thought you would see it our way Stephenson," Joel sang out.
"I'm not stupid Joel, just a bit slow sometimes," March said.
"No March, you are completely clueless," I said as I moved quickly to the doorway.
"Nicky get back here." He yelled.
Thank God Rachael had the good sense to leave. I hope her car started okay.
March loves it when I get angry, because he hardly ever sees that side of me, only the fun Nicky, who he loves also.
"I take it you will be on board tomorrow?" Dad said.
"Yes dad. I am sorry, I just got a bit carried away."
"You reckon?"
"Sorry." He dropped his head.
"So I take it you will be home by six?" I asked him.
"I sure will Nicky." He smiled.
"No you won't March." Mum sang out from the window.
"What?"
"Chinese tonight our place, Mike you're invited."
"Cool Mum Wilson, thank you."
"You're very welcome Mike."
"Good. One thing about you Nicky I always eat well. Rachael's a lousy cook but Bobby does okay."
"Did you get a chance to talk to him?"
"Yes Nicky, he's a great kid. He has some issues, but he will get there."
"What issues March?"
"Tell you later."
"Oh secrets, I love secrets." I wiggled my eyebrows.
His mouth was once again on mine, and by the time he finished, I was almost spread-eagled on the table, and Mike and dad were in stitches.
"He's back," Mike said.
"Thank God for that," Dad answered.
"Sorry." He said again.
"So what changed your mind?" I said to him just before we went home.
"Mum and May, they told me what was going on. I didn't believe them, but what Bobby told me made more sense after listening to them."
"And what did he say?"
"He said he was gay, he's known for a long time. Rachael told him not to be so silly she had her doubts that even I was gay. She made him feel awful Nicky, he's so stressed out."
"I can see that. What did you say?"
"I told him to talk to you, that he wasn't strange or crazy, he was normal. So he said he would think about it."
"I see, so why me?"
"Because you know a lot more than me, and I was remembering what Jan said about gay kids in town, and I know what she was talking about now. Nicky I am a bit worried about him."
"And why isn't he talking to Mike?"
"He thinks Mike will shun him, because of what he is."
"Then we have to get them together. Mike is the last person that would shun him."
"I told him that, but he's still pretty shy around him."
"You can thank his mum for that. Thank you for telling me."
"Thank you for forgiving me for being so awful to you."
"Can we go eat now?"
"Yes. I'm starving. I still don't know what to do about Rachael."
"She will calm down, but if you still want to continue the friendship make it on your terms, not hers. She has money she just sold a bloody house. That's why I cancelled your cards she can afford to buy her own."
"I would never have the guts to do that to you Nicky,"
I looked him in the eyes and said.
"You know what would happen if you ever did."
His phone beeped he looked at the message, answered, and then turned it off.
"Rachael?"
"Yes, the hot water doesn't work."
"She should be ringing Rose."
"I agree, and told her so." He smiled, and then he kissed me.
Mike was already at mum's, and Mason went straight for his lap. They started talking about cars and horses again as dad sat with March and they went over the cars that
had come in. I thanked mum when I went to the kitchen to help unload the food.
"It had to be done Nicky, even I could see what she was up to."
"And what was your assessment."
"She is looking for a father for her kids."
"Well, she can't have Mason's." I smiled.
"Never in a million years Nicholas Stephenson, not my grandson." She flicked me with her tea towel.
There was plenty of food on the table and Mike's eyes were wide open. We talked about his renovations and his gran's house sale, she's had a few offers but hasn't decided yet.
"Dad Wilson, she had been offered a lot of money for her property, it's nearly twenty acres. But she said if they were going to offer her that much they will pay a little more." He laughed.
"So she's very savvy then?" I asked.
"She is now." He laughed.
"She should offer it to Nudge he can build another estate."
"That's what I said, but she said he will turn it into a dust bowl."
"I love your gran," March said.
"March owns all the land surrounding the town, he will never sell it because it is all a natural forest."
"So is gran's and her reasons are the same as March's?"
"As I said I love your gran." March pumped the air.
The meal was filling, but not for March Stephenson, he had to have more, and when we got back home the moaning started. That was after I took Joel's calling card off our door, he would only be checking up on us (I think).
"Well you will eat yourself silly March, you only have yourself to blame."
"But I don't feel so good Nicky."
"Then get into bed, try and sleep it off."
"Can you help me?" I took his arm and led him to our bed. Then I had the pleasure of stripping him off. As he laid his head on the pillow he said.
"Can you tuck me in?" I did that job then went to see if Mason had dropped off to sleep. I locked up and March was fast asleep when I crawled into bed. I would never tell him I felt the same. I ate far too much tonight also.
All was well in the morning, we should settle down on the Chinese, it doesn't matter how much you eat it's never filling.
March was full of beans again and he pulled me into the bedroom to get closer to my zipper. I was getting my apology suck and he did a great job.
"Now, are you going to work today?"
"Yes boss, I am going to work."
"And to the bank to reinstate your cards, they will need some identification."
"Can you come with me?"
"Yes, I will come with you."
"Good, you can identify me."
I laughed on our way to the car. I looked sideways and he had the biggest smile on his face. I had looked at the page and there were a few comments, nothing outlandish just sniggers. I half expected my tirade in the gym to be posted. I guess it's all about the kids, they shouldn't be embarrassed because of their mum's shortcomings. It warmed me that my town thinks this way, and I have to thank Jan for being so clever. I am worried about Bobby, he shouldn't have to go through his young life feeling like an outcast, and I prayed he would come and talk to me one day soon.
'I have seen the film clip Nicky, well done' Rose messaged me.
'It had to be done, nip it in the bud before it escalates'
'She's not happy but she understands a little better now after we talked'
'Oh?'
'I filled her in on what people think around here, and suggested she starts mending fences'
'Thank you Rose'
'Is March okay'
'He will survive lol'
I had this conversation with her on the way to work, March parked in his spot and dad was pumping gas and smiling.
He kissed me and then we walked across the road for our breakfast rolls.
Things got back to normal pretty fast in our town. May was back sitting in the sunshine and mum also sat with us. Mike was laughing his head off because March and May were at each other's throats again. This time it was over her parenting skills. She usually places a mat on the pavement so Rosie can fine tune her crawling skills. March suggested she put mats all over the place.
Nicky!" May screamed.
"March, if you don't stop I will cut sex off for a week."
"Sorry Nicky."
"And?"
"Sorry. May."
He blushed and that's what started Mike off. It was Mason's last day at play school for a week. so we walked him up there, well March gave him a shoulder ride. We wished Louise good luck and then called into the bank.
His cards will be active again tomorrow and he was once again very happy, as he looked through marketplace.
Mike was eager to start on the old Humber, he did drive it and complained about it not having power steering.
"Pump the tyres up Mike it should handle a little bit better," Dad advised him.
"It would be easier to install power steering."
"It would, but we have to keep them original."
"Got it boss," He was always smiling, and I guess that has a lot to do with his father's change of attitude.
"Nicky can we use a distiller?" March sang out.
"No," I yelled back, and there goes Mike again.
