The two boys are moving towards becoming friends. There are signs that Evan will be the one who initiates any sex between the boys but they have a way to go to establish that kind of relationship. Leroy's Dad has gotten involved and might have started something that will take Evan away from the woods.

Two Lost Souls

Chapter Three

Someone sitting on the edge of his bed woke Leroy from his nap. He opened his eyes and saw his Dad with a sad look on his face. Leroy rolled on his back and looked at his Dad.

"Dad, I'm sorry I disobeyed you but . . ." Leroy started but was interrupted.

"Leroy, I had no idea you were wondering around in the woods by yourself. You could have fallen and hurt yourself."

"Yes, Dad, I know. I was being careful. I never strayed off the main trail."

"Maybe so, but what about that boy? Do you have any idea who he is or why he is living in the woods by himself? He could be more dangerous than traipsing around out there. Do you even know his name?"

"I know he has had a rough life. His back is all covered in welts and scared from being beaten with a strap or belt of some sort. I think he is in trouble at home and he needs help. He needs me, Dad. He needs us!"

"We need to find out more about him. Maybe we should go out and talk to him and see what we can find out. How does that sound?"

"I just tried but your comment about him being a stray dog really hurt him. By the way he was talking, he has been treated like less than a human being all his life. He wants nothing to do with me."

"That was wrong of me. Trying to be a father and a mother to you had been hard. Your mother would always temper my attitude when I was too strict with you. Without her around I guess I have gone overboard trying to protect you."

"Not being able to leave the house or play any sports or anything is really getting to me. This obsession with Julius Caesar is getting old. I need to experience the real world around me, danger or not. I'm well aware of my medical condition and I know my limitations but I need to breathe."

"You're right, son. As hard as it is for you, it will be just as hard for me to step back. Tomorrow when I get home from work we'll go out and look for the boy and see if he has calmed down by then."

"Okay, thanks for understanding."

Leroy rolled forward and gave his Dad a hug. They had an early supper and watched TV for a while before going to bed.

Evan made himself as comfortable as he could in what was left of his shelter. His stomach was full from the sandwiches he had eaten but his heart was empty. Despite all he had been through in his short fourteen years he was a survivor and a fighter, always finding a way to get through what adults in his life were doing to him. But this was different. This was the lowest point he had ever sunken to. He had a chance of connect with someone who genuinely cared for him but he drove him away. Sleep didn't come easy for him. The slightest noise would wake him, looking to see if it was that boy come to check on him. But it was only the nighttime sounds of the woods, ever present but seldom heard by anyone.

Scott left for work the next morning with a promise to be home early to go with Leroy into the woods and look for the boy. Leroy straightened up his room, picking up his favorite book on Caesar. Reading this book always comforted him when something was troubling him. But not now. He wanted the company of a real person, the boy in the woods. Leroy's world of make believe felt hollow and meaningless. He put the book back on its shelf and went to the window, staring at the path.

Wait! Leroy thought he saw something move. He couldn't make out what it was, but the bushes had moved, he was sure. He ran down the stairs as fast as his limping gait could take him, opened the back door and stood in the doorway. Then he saw him. The boy slowly walked out of the bushes at the end of the path and stopped. Leroy came out of the doorway and took a few steps onto the lawn. He wasn't sure why the boy had returned but he was being very cautious in case he was still angry.

The boy took a few steps onto the lawn and stopped. Then Leroy took a few more steps. They both started walking towards each other and met half way between the house and the woods.

"Hi," Leroy said tentatively.

"Hey," the boy replied. "I wanted to bring your clothes back to you and get mine."

He figured this would be a good way to keep his guard up and not let on that he wanted to talk to Leroy.

"I'll get your clothes for you, but you can keep those. I gave them to you."

"I don't want to be owing you anything so you can have them back."

"You don't owe me anything. Consider it a gift. From one friend to another?" Leroy said with a smile, hoping this might be headed in the right direction.

"We ain't friends, . . . not yet anyway."

"Okay, but maybe we can work on it?"

"Maybe," the boy said, his mouth turning up a little at the corners.

"By the way, my name is Leroy. Leroy Baxter. What's yours?"

"Evan Peters."

Leroy put his hand out to shake with Even. Evan took his hand and gave him a strong handshake, holding Leroy's hand a little longer than a typical handshake.

A warm feeling swept over Leroy, not sure if it was from them breaking the ice or if it was from the contact of this mysterious boy again.

"I'm going to call you Roy. Leroy sounds too formal," Evan told him.

They sat down on the grass and began to chat.

"I'm sorry about what my Dad said about you. I could tell he hit a nerve," Roy began.

"Yeah, my life sucks thanks to all the adults in my family."

"My Dad is really a great guy. He had stepped up to be a dad and a mom after my Mom and I were in a car crash and she was killed."

"Sorry to hear that. Is that why you limp, from the accident?"

"I shattered my hip. The doctors had to reconstruct it with pins and plastic. That's when they found out I was suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder that causes my bones to be brittle and break easily. I was confined to a wheel chair for eight months while his hip healed. My Dad is afraid I'll get hurt again if I play sports or do any of the normal stuff a guy would do."

"Your bone seemed to be hard enough yesterday in the shower," Evan joked.

Leroy's face turned red and he looked down at the ground.

"Yeah, sorry about that. I don't know it did that."

"I was chubbing up too, as I know you saw. But relax, it's a normal reaction to two guys being naked in the shower together,"

"I wouldn't know, I've never been naked with another guy, in the shower or anywhere else."

"Well now you have. That's the first step."

Leroy wasn't sure what Evan meant by that being the first step. Before he could think about it too long, the tension was relieved and their chat continued.

"I wish my parents cared about me like that. My folks both were drug addicts. My Dad was robbing convenience stores to buy drugs. He was about to be arrested so he took off in the middle of the night. I heard him leaving and begged him to take me with him. He told me he couldn't afford to take an excess baggage along to slow him down."

"Probably just as well you didn't go, being on the run all the time."

"Staying with my Mom was no better. She started dealing for her supplier to afford her drugs. She even had me doing deliveries for her. I was super careful not be to caught but she was nailed in a sting. She was convicted and is serving 10 years in jail. The Department of Child Safety sent me to live with my Aunt. That was a laugh. There was no safety at her house."

"Did something happen to you?"

"Did it ever. My Aunt was a drunk and made her money by selling herself for sex. She didn't care how dirty or disgusting the men were, as long as they paid she'd spread her legs. One of her guys caught me coming out of my bedroom and molested me. She heard me screaming and yelling and ran into my bedroom. When she saw what he was doing, the only thing she said was, 'That's going to cost extra'. She started selling my body to these perverts and made her a shit load of money, not that I ever saw any of it."

"Damn! Why didn't you report her?"

"One of the guys who messed with me was the head of detectives on the police department and told me if I said anything to anyone he would claim I was the one initiating things. He's make sure I went to juvenile lock up until I was eighteen. He beat the shit out of me with his belt to make sure I got the message. My aunt heard me screaming and burst into my bedroom, but once again, not to my defense. She got pissed and threw him out because he was 'damaging the merchandise'. I was nothing to her but fucking merchandise to be whored out! She went and got an old grungy sleeping bag and told me to sleep on it on the floor so I didn't get the blood from my cuts on her sheets. I couldn't take anymore. So I stole some money from my Aunt's stash and got the fuck out of there. Been living in these woods ever since."

As Evan was telling his story, he face was getting red, his lips were pursed and his eyes were narrowing. Reliving it all was making the anger boil up inside of him. Leroy's eyes were watering, not be able to imagine being put through so much hell at that age.

"That explains the welts on your back. They'll heal but the emotional scars will take a lot longer."

"For sure."

"Maybe that's where I can come in?" Leroy told him as he reached out and put his hand on Evan's.

"How so?"

"We're both prisoners in our own way. I'm a prisoner of my disease and my Dad being overly cautious, condemned to living my life in a fantasy world as a fierce Roman emperor. You're a prisoner of the abuse you have suffered and have condemned yourself to living in the woods all alone. Maybe we can be friends and help each other?"

"Maybe. By the way, what is with all the ancient history crap and running around in that sheet?"

"Julius Caesar was a fearless Roman emperor. I got interested in him while reading books about him when I was recovering from my hip injury. Instead of a cripple lying in bed, I would close my eyes and envision what it would be like to be Caesar, almost invincible and in control of everything around him. The more I read and the more I thought about him, I began to pretend I was Caesar when I was out of the hospital. The sheet was a toga that enhanced my role-play. I know it sounds stupid and childish but it got me through my isolation."

"It's not stupid. You do what you have to do to survive, like me. I guess we are very much a like. So where do we go from here?"

"I say we go to my garage and get some tarpaulins and go rebuild your shelter. My Dad wants to meet you and talk to you after he gets out of work today. We can't have him show up to your shelter in the shape its in," Leroy laughed.

"Won't you Dad be mad if we take his stuff?"

"No. We had them to cover stuff in the yard in Florida when a hurricane was predicted. He probably has forgotten all about them by now."

The boys went to the garage to gather materials to rebuild the shelter.

"Will these tarps work okay?" Leroy asked.

"These will be great. Can I borrow that hammer and take some nails?"

"Take what ever you think you'll need. This is all new to me so you're in charge."

They stopped at the kitchen to make some sandwiches then headed off to the woods to get to work. It was late morning by now and the summer sun was heating up the day. They were working up a good sweat as they worked so shirts were discarded early on.

Leroy would look at Evan's naked upper body at every chance he got. The muscles on Evan's arms were on prominent display compared to the rest of his lithe body. His smooth flat stomach was glistening with sweat when the sun's rays were able to penetrate the canopy of the trees. In comparison, Leroy's body was a soft and a little pudgy from his only exercise being jerking off. Leroy could feel that unfamiliar feeling in his crotch if he spent too much time staring at Evan so he kept his glances short but often.

Despite Leroy's lack of hands on skills, the two of them worked well together, finishing the shelter by mid afternoon.

"It's finished!" Evan declared. "The new Evan Peter's mansion is ready to entertain visitors if your father really does show up later."

"He will. If nothing else, he is a man of his word."

The boys stood back and looked at what they had built.

"Thanks. This mean a lot to me," Evan said as he pulled Leroy in for a quick hug. "Damn, you stink," Evan laughed as he stepped back. We should jump in the lagoon and wash off the smell."

"That sound good but I don't have a bathing suit," Leroy reasoned.

"Neither do I, but its not like we haven't seen each other naked before."

"But right here, out in the open?"

"You're the only person I've even seen sneaking around these woods and you're here now so I don't think anyone is going to see us. So what do you say?"

Leroy looked around nervously, then without saying anything, he smiled at Evan and began to pull of his clothes.

"Hell ya!" Evan shouted and stripped.

The two boys ran to the lagoon and waded in until the water completely covered their naked bodies. Leroy's cock was stiffening quickly and although he couldn't see Evan's cock under the water, he assumed his was doing the same.

"This is so awesome. My Dad used to take me to the local swim club to swim. He said it was good exercise. The only other people there were fat old men and old ladies with saggy tits. Swimming naked feels so liberating," Leroy commented.

"Especially when you're swimming with your new naked ass friend," Evan smirked.

Leroy splashed a handful of water at Evan who in turn splashed back. The splashing inevitably led to wrestling with each other. As the tussled in the water, the incidental touching confirmed Leroy's suspicions that Evan was indeed sporting a rock hard cock. There was no overt cock play but more often than not, one of the boy's legs or the other found its way between the other's legs and pressed against a boner.

They came out of the water lay on the edge of the lagoon to let the sun dry their bodies. They talked about how much fun it was working together as their cocks softened and fell down between their legs.

"I better get going back to my house in case my dad comes home early. I don't want him to catch me out here with you, not until he has a chance to meet you," Leroy said as he stood up.

"I understand. Again, thank you for helping me."

"Thank you for showing me how to build a shelter. And introducing me to skinning dipping," Leroy giggled.

"My pleasure, literally."

Evan stood up and pulled Leroy in for a hug, something he was getting in the habit of doing more often. The result of their naked bodies touching was instant hardons. Evan held the hug, his head placed on Leroy's shoulder. He pulled his head back and looked into Leroy's eyes.

"You are the first person in my whole life who has actually cared about me. You have no idea how much that means to me."

Leroy was about to say something but before he could speak, Evan brought his lips to Leroy's mouth and kissed him.

Leroy's brain went crazy. One side of it was a beautiful display of Fourth of July fireworks and the other side was an ominous mushroom cloud of a devastating nuclear explosion. Their arms wrapped around each other, holding each other in a tight embrace, their stiff cocks pressed into each other's stomachs and now Evan's soft lips pressed to Leroy's mouth. Holy hell! Leroy had never felt such emotion in his life. It was like their two bodies had melded into one being, one consciousness with nothing else around them. Leroy's hormones were racing through his body faster than the winner of the Indy 500 and the fireworks in his head were nonstop. Evan broke the kiss and looked at Leroy.

Evan could feel Leroy's body stiffen up and pull back slightly. The other side of his brain had taken over, the bad side. What the fuck was he doing kissing a naked guy right out in the open in the woods? He wasn't gay? This isn't what guys like him do? What would Caesar think if he could see Leroy now? No, this was wrong, very, very wrong. It may have felt good but it is still wrong.

"I'm sorry. I hope you're not mad?" Evan finally said.

"No, but I have to get going. I don't want to be late," Leroy said quickly as he picked up his clothes and started towards the path home.

"Aren't you going to get dressed?" Evan asked.

"Oh, yeah. I'm still a little wet so I'll put my clothes on further down the trail."

In reality, Leroy just wanted to leave as quickly as possible so he could try and clear his mind. Was the kiss a good thing or was it a bad thing? Did he want more or was he in danger of falling into a life of sexual deviation like Evan had experienced? He was confused and needed time to think.

Evan sat back down on the ground, filled with regrets about kissing Leroy. Not regretting the kiss itself; that felt so right. But regretted doing it and maybe scarring him off. He finally found someone who cares about him and again, he may have alienated him by doing something he shouldn't have done. It was too late now so he would wait and see if Leroy came back with his Dad. The more he thought about the fun that they had swimming together, Evan's cock came to life. He lay back, closed his eyes and took a hold of his cock, jerking himself off to a body-shaking climax. He scooped up a finger full of cum and put it to his mouth. H had been forced to taste the cum of the men at his aunt's house when they made him suck them off but this was the first time he tasted his own cum. He was surprised that he enjoyed the taste. He scooped up some more then went back in the water to wash off.

Leroy had reached the edge of the woods and stopped to put his clothes on. The feelings he had from the kiss were still at front and center in his head. He touched his lips with his finger then absent mindedly reached for his cock with his other hand. He hadn't realized it was still hard until his fingers touched it. He wrapped his fingers around it and squeezed it. Some precum appeared at his piss slit. He wiped it with his finger and brought it to his mouth. It tasted salty and a little sweet but that was all. He put his hand back on his cock and began to stroke it, slowly at first but then faster and faster as his mind went back to the kiss. Soon he was spewing shot after shot of cum out of his cock. The orgasm was one of the best he had had in a long time but as the euphoria wore off, buyer's remorse set in. He knew it. He was going down the road to perversion. It wasn't like he hadn't jerked off before but this time he had Evan in his mind as he did. He got dressed and went to the house to wait for his Dad.

Leroy went to his room and studied all his posters and decorations relating to the Roman Empire. Like parting with a dear old friend, it was time to move on. He started to remove everything one by one and put all of it in his closet. Then he rearranged the books on his bookshelves, putting his books on Caesar up on the top shelf. When he was done, he looked around again and with a heavy heart decided his room now look closer to what a typical fourteen year old boy's bedroom should look like.

His Dad came up to his bedroom when he arrived home.

"Wow, this is different. What prompted the change?" he Dad asked as he surveyed the new look.

"It was time to move on, Dad. Pretending to be a Roman emperor, writing letters to Santa, putting a tooth under my pillow, I need to put all of that behind me and face life head on."

His dad hugged Leroy with a tear in his eye.

"You don't have to, you know. You can believe in all that and stay young as long as you want. I'm not ready for my little boy to grow up yet."

"No Dad, it's what I have to do."

"Did that boy in the woods put you up to this?"

"His name is Evan, Evan Peters. In a way he did. He told me his story and how he ended up living in the woods. He has been through so much, none of it good. He is tough, resilient and independent. Me, I can't walk out in the yard on wet grass for fear of hurting myself. I have to change if I'm going to survive."

"What is this boy's story that has made you determined to change your life all in one day?"

"His name is Evan, Dad. Evan Peters. Remember?"

"Okay, so what is Evan's story?"

Leroy had his Dad sit on the edge of his bed while he told him everything Evan had told him. Of course he didn't tell his Dad about the skinny-dipping or the kiss. Before Leroy was finished, Scott had put his arm around Leroy's shoulders and pulled him close.

"My god, that's horrible. He should have gone to the police instead of running away," his Dad concluded.

"No, Evan doesn't trust adults anymore, especially adults in authority. He feels more control of his life by himself."

"I'm sure there are people who can help him. He just hasn't found the right one yet."

Leroy looked up at his Dad.

"Like you, Dad?"

"Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. His story may be true or it may be just something to get your sympathy. That's they way con artists work, you know."

"Dad! He's not a con artist!"

"Maybe not, but there is an old Russian proverb, 'Doveryay no proeryay'."

"What they hell does that mea?"

" 'Trust, but verify'. I'll make some calls tomorrow and see if his story checks out."

"Okay, but you can't tell any one where he is. They'll nab him and send him to another foster home. Then he'll just runaway again and who knows where he'll end up. "

"One step at a time, Leroy. Let's go meet him in person."

Leroy and his Dad went outside and headed sown the path into the woods. As they got closer to the shelter, Leroy called out to Evan.

"Hey Evan, my Dad is with me and he wants to meet you."

Evan had heard someone coming and had hid in the woods behind the shelter, not knowing if it was friend or foe. When Leroy called out, he came out to meet them. He was glad that Roy had come back with his Dad. Evidently the kiss didn't drive him away for good.

When Leroy and his Dad came up to Evan, Leroy's face showed no emotion, not happy to see Evan nor pissed at him for the kiss. Evan decided to go with the flow and see where it went.

"This is my Dad, Evan. Dad, this is Evan."

"Glad to meet you, Evan," Scott said, extending his hand.

"Like wise, Mr. Baxter," accepting his hand and giving it a firm handshake that impressed Scott.

"First of all, I want to apologize to you about that 'stray dog' remark. That was rude and uncalled for. I was just concerned, no, scared about Leroy walking around in these woods alone and what might happen to him. I hope you can accept my apology."

"Thank you," was all Evan replied

"This is quite the shelter you have constructed. We used to have some tarps just like these," Scott noticed.

"You still do, sir, they're just in a different place. I didn't steal them, Roy said I could use them for now," Evan stood tall and told Scott. " I can take them down and return them if you'd like."

" Oh, so it's 'Roy' now, is it?" Scott asked with a grin. "Well if Roy said you can use them, who am I to say otherwise. Thank you for being forthcoming."

"I've done some ugly things in my life that I'm truly embarrassed and ashamed about, sir, but I don't lie. You ask me a question and I'll give you an honest answer."

"Good to know. Then here's a question for you. How long to you plan on camping on our land and what are your plans going forward?"

"Dad, that's two questions," Leroy corrected him.

"That's fine, Roy, I'll give him two answers. First I didn't know this was your land. I can pack up and move if you want. Right now I am taking things one day at a time. I'm hoping I can get back into school some how when summer is over but right now I'm not sure that is even possible."

"Although I don't think it's a good idea to camp out here all by yourself, I have no objections to you being our guest for a while. Leroy, excuse me, Roy had explained your situation and your reluctance to put any faith in adults. You have been let down at every turn so far, but there is help out there for you. We just have to find it."

"I appreciate what you're saying, but I'm better off here, thank you. There is no need for you to get involved."

"I'm glad we have met. Roy and I have to get back to the house. Take care of yourself."

With that said, Scott turned to head back up the path. Leroy hesitated momentarily, looked at Evan and smiled, giving him a thumbs up. Evan smiled back with a sigh of relief.

When they got back to the house, Scott informed Leroy that he had a doctor's appointment tomorrow. His doctor from Florida had called Scott at work and told him of a drug trial for a new medication that might help Leroy's bone density issues. They were meeting him in the morning for an interview and some tests.

"Don't get your hopes up, but I want to see what he has to say. We have to look into anything that might help you."

"Okay, thanks. So, what did you think of Evan? He's not a bad kid, he's just had some tough breaks."

"He seemed very personable. I can see why he had been an influence on my son, making him wanting to grow up and all," Scott kidded.

"Dad. Be serious. It's important to me that we see if we can help him somehow."

"Okay. One of my coworkers had a sister who works for Department of Child Safety. I'll have him make some inquires with her tomorrow."

"Thanks Dad, but please be discreet. If they find out where he is, he'll be picked up and we may never see him again."

"Don't worry, Almost everything I've been doing at work is a big secret right now so this will just be one more," not letting on to Leroy about his work.

The next morning, Leroy was up early and packed a lunch in his Dad's small cooler.

"There's no need for that, we can eat in the hospital cafeteria," Scott told him.

:"This is for Evan. I won't be around all day so I was going to leave this for him at the path at the edge of the lawn."

Scott realized Leroy had been feeding this boy all along. He wasn't happy at not knowing but in his heart he knew Leroy's compassion for the boy outweighed his concern.

"Okay, but hurry. I don't want to be late."

They arrived at the hospital and signed in. They met with the doctor, discussed the pros and cons of the drug trial then took Leroy for some testing.

"I'll wait here for you," Scott told Leroy. "I have some calls to make."

Scott called his office and spoke to his co-worker who was more than happy to talk to his sister and find out what he could. He called back in an hour and informed Scott that Evan Peters' mother was in jail, his father had abandoned them and Evan was living with his aunt in the next township. Most of it was exactly what Evan had told them. Scott questioned that by saying he had run into a boy panhandling in front of a convenience store downtown yesterday and told him his name was Evan Peters. The co-worker said he'd get back to his sister and let Scott know if she found out anything more.

Another hour passed and Scott got a phone call from a blocked number.

"Hello, Mr. Baxter?" a female voice said.

"Yes, this is he."

"Oh good, This is Helen from the Department of Child Safety, Barney's sister. I checked with Evan's aunt and she said he had run away weeks ago. When I asked her why she didn't report it she claimed he was nothing but trouble, always drinking her booze and stealing money from her. She was glad he left and didn't want him back."

"I didn't get the same impression from him but I only talked to him briefly on my way into the store."

"What was the store he was in front of? I'll go by there and see if I can find him. I'd like to come out and interview you if I may. Obviously this boy is out there somewhere and I want to find him. I really need to get him placed somewhere safe. The last person his case was assigned to got transferred and he slipped through the cracks. I don't want that to happen again."

He gave her the address of a convenience store he passes on his way to work. They set up an appointment for her to come to Scott's house and interview him the next night.

Evan had been a bad influence on Scott now as well. Scott was big on telling the truth and he had just lied to this woman. But he felt keeping his promise to Leroy and Evan to not reveal his whereabouts was more important that being untruthful to a stranger.

Had set the ball in motion. How relentless was this woman going to be in finding Evan? Would Leroy let something slip about Evan when she came to interview Scott? Maybe Evan was right to rely on himself and no one else? Maybe Scott should have kept his nose out of it?
