Chapter 8 Unexpected help

<What ...> responds Hank involuntarily being caught of guard that with the new voice. A voice that he is sure he knows but is not able to place.

<Who are you and what are you doing here!> states Jean threateningly, not even really asking the question as more preparing herself to annihilate the intruder.

Unable to recognize the mind that has invaded, the linked minds in the Medical Room, but sensing the strength behind it Jean decides to go all out. The room's temperature rapidly increases as Jean is engulfed in flames. mocks Phoenix as she bears down on the invader's mind, preparing to scorch all remnants of its existence.

"Ahhh," screams Hank as he jumps back and high into the air, his right arm on fire from the flash fire that erupted from Jean.

<Good the shield protected Hank from any further burns, fuck I can't get the flames on Jean to die down> thinks Sue as she uses her barrier powers to not only battle the flames on Jean but also smother the fires that were on Hank.

<What threw Hank through the air?> asks Reed as he stretches his body to the limit to protect Hank from flying into the ceiling. as he grunts from the strain of stretching so far so fast.

"Well thank you," says Hank after being caught by Reed. He notices the sweat beads and pained look on Reed's face, "Stop straining yourself and get back to normal, I can land from this height."

<Thank god, Hank is heavier than he looks> as Reed lets go of Hank, so they both can return quickly to the ground. <It felt as if Hank was mostly muscle, I would have never have guessed with the lab coat on>

"I can't get the flames to die down," exclaims Sue. "It's like they have a life of their own."

Just then an ungodly scream from the intruder of such intensity pierces their minds, momentarily blinding all thoughts.

<Jean stop! Get control of yourself now!> yells the Professor. <I've already handled the situation stop your assault! It's Ric, a student of the institute!>

states Phoenix defiantly as she presses her attack. She feels the trembling mind before her and smiles to herself as she prepares to engulf the now defenseless entity.

The Professor directly assaults Jean's mind realizing that he is not dealing with Jean but with her alter ego, Phoenix. In this state Jean is at her strongest, but she is not in full control of her powers.. Instead lashing out in rages and finding pleasure in the destruction that she causes.

<Phoenix I command you to stop your assault right now!> demands the Professor as he continues to press on even as the Phoenix attempts to lay waste his mind.

<Who are you Charles to command me!> roars Phoenix forgetting for the moment the defeated mind that she has surrounded.

<You know very well who I am!> says Professor X remembering that he put the part of Jean in the back of her mind and buried it.

<Do you dare compare your power to mine Charles!> gathering her strength to show that she is stronger than the first time they met.

says Professor X as he sees the holes in her defenses.

<I am more than Jean, Charles, and I will not go back to unconsciousness!> Phoenix unleashes all of her strength upon the Professor in an attempt to overwhelm him.

The Professor vastly more experienced in mental battles easily dodges most of the fury that is the Phoenix. But never lets done his guard, knowing that though she is inexperienced her attack far exceeds his own. He picks his spots to devastating effect, and allowing for limited damage to himself.

<Phoenix stop this foolishness, you must know that you can not win> demands Professor X after repeated assaults weakening her.

<I will not go back, I will not!> screams Phoenix increasing her strength yet again but in an even more uncontrolled fury.

Realizing that unknowingly she is now engulfing Ric's mind <Phoenix, Jean will never allow you to rest if you kill an innocent>

<That boy, he attacked he invaded, he ...>

Cutting her off <I tell you now that he is innocent. Further not only is he innocent, he does not have the strength to hurt you, this school or me telepathically> states Professor X.

<He had strength enough ...>

<No the strength was not his, but borrowed> states Professor X again cutting her off, keeping her of balance and confused.

<I am stronger than Jean, Charles; I will defeat her if she gets in my way> rushing on before the Professor can interrupt her again <Shut up, not only that I will kill this boy if you try to push me back again. I am not going back> She increases the flames around Ric's mind to prove that she is serious that she will kill him.

<Please I'm sorry. Whatever I did I'm sorry. Please I'm sorry. I'm sorry; I don't want to fight you. Never wanted to fight you. I'm sorry I was trying to protect myself when you attacked me> pleads Ric to Phoenix as he feels smothered by the overwhelming power that is surrounding and crushing him.

<Phoenix, he was never a danger, Jean just over reacted> explains the Professor. the Professor pauses so that that revelation can sink in.

<I won't go back, Charles, I would rather die here and now> roars Phoenix preparing for a final assault.

<You do not have to go back, but you must stop this attack now> states the Professor. <I will not make you go back, but you must realize I can not allow you to be the one, the host>

asks the Phoenix for the first time intrigued.

states Professor X as he laughs at himself for not realizing it sooner. <If I put you back again you will just dig your way out, you have been in communication with Jean for some time Phoenix> he waits for an answer but none comes.

In an uncontrolled fury the Phoenix increases all the flames to their max, mistakenly burning where Ric's mind was.

The Professor expected this and had already removed Ric and place him in a como out of harms way. <That is why Phoenix, you are not unable to control yourself. For both your sacks accept this fact. You do not have to retreat to the outer edges of Jean's unconsciousness. Come out in the open; be with Jean's consciousness. Be complete, just Jean in front and in control>

demands Phoenix

<Yes you will have a much bigger say than you have ever had before, I promise> states Jean as she regains control of her mind.

says the Professor happily <Are you aware of the past events?>

<Yes, Charles, but let's talk about them later. How is Ric?>

<Truthfully his mind is ravaged but the core is fine. The damage is actually haphazard, the Phoenix, I mean you never got the chance to do an all-out assault> states Professor X gratefully <I calmed his mind so that it would induce a coma, I believe that we can heal him completely>

<That is good I am relieved, I will do all that I can for both Ric and David. I see things in a much different light now Charles. I see how Ric and David can be used to heal each other. I will explain it to you as we talk>

<Yes. But for now I think the people in Medical need your help>
