You're Not Better Than Me
Epilogue
It's been twenty-five years since we last visited with Eric and Bart, their families and their friends in their small town. There have been some changes and some things have stayed the same.
Bart's Mother dated a few more men but she was on the verge if giving up looking for the right man to ever fall in love again. She was coming home from a late evening dinner meeting with her book club when her car sputtered and died several miles from home. She tried to start it several times with no success. The dealership who normally services her car was closed so for want of a better idea, she called the sheriff. He told her he would call a tow truck to come get her car off the road. The sheriff called a local mechanic who he knew was honest and good at diagnosing problems. He showed up with his tow truck and took Carol and the car back to his shop. It turned out to simply be a bad relay for the fuel pump. He had it fixed in no time and sent her on her way.
She was so appreciative for the quick repair and the reasonable price, she went back to his shop the next day with some home made cookies for him. She knew the quickest way to a man's heart was through his stomach. They chatted like old friends and soon began dating. A year later they were married in a private ceremony at her house. Like her son, she had found her true love. After Bart had finished college, Carol and Kevin, the mechanic and new husband, moved across country and settled in Washington state near Carol's hometown. The boys would travel out to stay with them for the holidays from mid November through mid January. The following year, Carol and Kevin would travel East and stay with the boys for two months. Carol transferred ownership of the family estate to Bart and Eric as a wedding gift, making them promise to keep it in the family.
Mr. Philips retired the same year Eric and Bart graduated. He had been called a hero in the papers for his part in the 'rescue' of the boys in the fire at the school but he down played it, saying he was just doing his job of looking after the children in his care while at school. He and his wife spend their golden years traveling around the country and around the globe seeing all the places he had taught students about as a geography teacher before he was promoted to principal.
Pete graduated high school and went on to college, getting his law degree. He worked as a public defender, wanting to make sure no other young people suffered the same fate as he did in the courtroom. He married a cute girl he dated for four years in college and started a family, three girls and one boy. They settled down two towns over from his parents so they had their independence but were still close enough to make their children important parts of Pete's parent's and Eric and Bart's lives.
Ed had saved up all his tip money and after working a few more years after high school, he opened his own pizza shop. It was a tremendous success. Not only because of his unique recipes he developed but also because of the way he treated his employees. He demanded a fair days work for a fair days pay. And then he would give bonuses whenever the shop had a good month. It was a win/win for everyone.
Morgan's experience with Bart made her seriously question her sexuality. She dated a few boys and decided that if anything, she was bi, but more probably straight as she dated more and more boys. Kayla still had feelings for Morgan so she didn't rat her out for the affair the two of them had. She did become bitter, though, that she had lost what she considered her true love. Over the summer she became more radical, dying her hair bright green, getting numerous tattoos and piercings, including a heart with Morgan's name inside. She had it done on the inside of her thigh, right next to her vagina, her favorite place for Morgan. She dropped out of school half way through her sophomore year and moved to parts unknown.
That leaves Eric and Bart. Their relationship continued to grow as their high school years progressed, each one knowing they had found their true love of their life. They had some students approach them who were confused about their own sexual identity and looked to the boys for advice. Some of them came out and some stayed in the closet, for personal reasons.
Bart was chosen as valedictorian and gave a moving speech about how tumultuous the high school years can be but how important it is to find your true identity and carry it forward to be the best you that you can be no matter what anyone else thinks about you. Bart went on to college earned his degree in botany. He would eventually take over as curator of the Botanical Gardens, establishing a trust fund that would expand the facilities and ensure its growth in the future.
Eric went to college to study retail management. Mr. Conrad had told Eric that when he retired, he wanted Eric to buy his store. Eric bought the store, expanded it and diversified the products to meet the needs of the growing community. A national box store was considering moving into town but decided against it when they did a study and found the competition from Eric's store would be too stiff for them.
The boys got married in a private ceremony held in the family home after they graduated college. Peter was Eric's Best Man and Ed was Bart's Best Man. In an unusual twist of a traditional wedding ceremony, Eric's father walked both the boys down the grand stairway and into the living room to the alter. When it was traditionally asked, 'who giveth their hand in marriage?' both Mothers stood up, went and kissed the boys on the cheek and answered in unison, 'we do!' The boys went to Austria on their honeymoon. Eric was a little apprehensive that it might bring back bad memories for Bart considering his last trip there. But Bart convinced him that the country was beautiful and he wanted to share it with Eric so they could make their own special memories.
They fulfilled their promise to their parents not to do any more dangerous rescues. Although, . . . there was that one time on the night of their senior prom. They had left the prom and were headed to a party at a friend's house. A drunk driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and swerved right in front of them, narrowly missing their car but ended up going into the woods and hitting a tree. When the sheriff arrived, the car was totally engulfed in flames and the drunk was sitting on the side of the road praying. When asked what happened, he could only explain that two angels dressed in white pulled him from the car just before it exploded. We thought he was dead but then the angels just left without taking him to heaven. The sheriff just laughed and laughed as he put he handcuffs on the drunk and pushed him into the back seat of the cruiser. The boys never did explain how they got their white prom tuxedos dirty and torn.
Thank you for following along with me as I shared the high school adventures of Eric and Bart. I will be taking a break for the holidays and then be back at the keyboard to spin more tales of friendship, love and of course, lots of sex.
