Well by sheer chance on a weed buy run Gage met Mac. He's a throwaway kid whose Mom and Stepdad are not interested in him returning. He's just a scared kid acting tuff .
Henry my weed supplier had picked him up off the side of the road and offered him his small camper to crash in .
When I went to buy my stuff this small slender kid looked afraid . I wasn't sure why but I had him come with me , I was sorta afraid Henry would take sexual advantage of him.
Pops came by and in his calm steady way , paved the road for me to care for Mac after we learned that he really wasn't welcome back home.
He's nice and quiet and small. Skinny and reserved. He just wants someone to care about him.
Pops worked it out for him to stay with me with the county . Heck I even get some assistance for housing him.
We went to the big box store for essentials underwear socks and basic stuff. I said pick out what you want and he got boxers and ankle socks I paid attention and got him some crew length socks too .
We went to the pants area and I asked jeans or khaki? He tried on some khaki slacks and they fit his skinny frame well.
So we got a couple pairs of jeans and khakis .
When we got home I opened the closet and said make it yours . Then I dug out a tub from the shed . He asked who lived here and I said me till Pop and Luna moved away. He seemed amazed by that. I shared when puberty hit me and Luna sharing a bedroom went bad.
So me and Pop took the shed and made it my space. I showed him the outside shower and said use this till it gets cold. We have a septic system and it's old.
He asked is there hot water and I nodded smiling.
We went thru the tub and found lots of shirts and board shorts that would work. I asked if he knew how to wash clothes and we took a lesson together.
Wash your dishes, put what we need from the store on the white board. If we do this together it goes easy. Your room is your space . Make the bed and pick up after yourself. Keep things clean and straight like I do.
I dug out and old phone and called the phone company and activated it . When I handed it to him he beamed. Just like a computer I said . We added phone numbers he needed and I showed him some features. He was like most on top of technology.
Why are you doing this he asked me. Mac , every one needs a break. Pops says all the time that fate happens for a reason. When I met you I didn't think you staying with Henry was smart. Yea , said Mac , he's gay and he creeped me out the way he looked at me.

I had to take off to get him enrolled in school and do crap with social services . We had to meet a judge to get orders signed. It was a lot , Pop wanted me to deal with it all the way. The judge asked me , why?
Everyone needs a break and when I met Mac , he needed someone to give him a break , so here I am. The judge said that's a fine reasonable answer.
He got to attend classes on Wednesday.
I'd asked my crew to pave the way for him . Keep the wolves at bay as it were.
Mac came home and was cautiously optimistic about things. He told me that everyone was nice and a girl seemed to like him. I could see he had relaxed with me and his smile was genuine.
We fixed and ate dinner then cleaned up and he worked easily to pull his weight.
Later that night I could hear him on a phone call telling how things were.
After the call he asked if he could game some and I said sure , I was studying for my test. He went and laid on my bed and time slipped away.
I got up and turned off lights and walked in my room . Mac was asleep with the game controller still in his hand. I went to his room and pulled the covers back then scooped him up in my arms and carefully negotiated the doorways and slipped him into bed . I covered him up and rubbed his head gently. I try to be honest and fair with everyone. I give more respect that most. I don't cheat steal or lie. Pretty soon I'm gonna take my exam and become a licensed electrician. That means that I can go anywhere anytime and get work. I'm almost there.
Did you wanna go to college he asked me. No not really , we couldn't afford it and well most of the kids that go to college come back here and do what they did growing up.
College wasn't a thing for me. I'm super content with my life. I wanna be like you , solid and kind.
How come you look so much different than you Pops and Sister. So you noticed , I said.

Life was pretty easy , Mac made friends and sorta seemed to have a girl that liked him and he liked her. I had to crack on him a bit over his school work. Explaining that being balanced was the best way. That he should encourage her to keep her grades up and she him.
He came in one evening and asked me in stumbling sentences about birth control. We sat and talked then went to the big box store and got him condoms. On the way home he was concerned that his lack of knowledge and experience and then he said I'm not all that big down there. I like weed but seldom drink more than a beer . I get terrible hangovers from a couple beers, I said. I smoke a fair amount of weed . Never at work , I added .
Everyone here smokes pot he says, I'm not sure about it , I don't wanna end up like my mom.
Never surrender your values to please someone else, I said . I'd like to say I know the answers but I'm really not sure a lot but I stick to my core beliefs and hold firm. I've got friends that danced with bad drugs and done bad things that I just wouldn't join in with them. All you gots to be is firm with yourself and don't fall for peer pressure.
I wish I had grown up with you as my big brother , said Mac. Well we can start now I offered . So do I call you my brother then he asked smiling. Sure I said I'd be proud to be your big bro'.
We got home and he asked me about cologne for guys. I responded that less is more in my opinion. I dug in my room and found a old bottle of Blue , I opened it and we both sniffed it . Just a small dab and I touched his neck and center of his chest .
Do you trim down there he asked me . Yea I keep my self manscaped I said . Do you have a trimmer he asked me. Yea I do or we can visit a girl that works with Luna and she can do it . He went to his bedroom and came out wearing a towel and went in the bathroom. I heard the water run and I grabbed a pair of board shorts and my clippers . I fired them up , oiled them and got a guard that was super short.
He hollered I'm ready. So I walked in the bathroom closed the door and turned on the wall heater. I spread a towel on the floor and sat on the toilet.

We finished up and I said now wash again and clean up the bathroom and shake the towel and wash the towels please.

Boy, things have sure changed I thought . Carefree one day and now overloaded with responsibilities the next.
We were fixing dinner when my phone alerted a motion outside. A county car pulled up and a lady was walking to the door. Go let her in I said to Mac.
Social worker , routine visit she announced. Join us for dinner I offered . She said as she wrote on a pad , she appreciated the offer. Where does Mac sleep she asked ? Show her your room , they went in and then into my room .
She stated , the game station is in your room , why. It's mine he's welcome to use it but I don't want him staying up late , playing. She asked about chores and responsibilities and backup help.
She went outside and then returned inside. She smiled and said she would make random unannounced visits. That's fine we both smiled.
I rode to Carls on my way home to grab my skim board , I was sure he had finished it.
There was yellow tape across the steps to the trailer . I figured it best to just leave. At the end of the driveway a deputy's suv had stopped and he walked up . What's going on Gage he asked? I've got a skimboard here for repairs. Yea , give it a week or so and get with his daughter. What happened I asked ? Carl is deceased he said flatly.
I called Pop when I pulled away and he always knows everything that's going on said, yea my buddies are being tight lipped as heck. I said , if you don't know, something bad musta happened . It will come out , it always does, said Pop.
How's Mac adjusting he asked? He's getting good grades and seems to be adjusting and he's got a girl he likes . He's honest and respectful and he's relaxed .
How's it feel being a Dad he asked , a big brother is how we handle it . Building trust has been the key I said . His Moms a heroin addict. The Social Services lady came by for a visit . We were fixing dinner , it's kinda weird how she just goes all thru the place and makes notes.
It's her responsibility to make sure Macs being cared for properly. Just roll with it I'm certain it's one of the better foster places she has to inspect.
Just keep him in line and be yourself . Will do Pop , I learned it all from you and Luna.
Let's do breakfast this weekend Pop suggested, sure thing. Then he said Luna says Macs a real sweetheart kid. I said, he's a super guy especially given the lousy hand he was dealt early on.
When I got home Mac asked me what was wrong, I gave him the shorter version as we fixed dinner . He worked on homework without me asking.
I'd been off and on talking to this girl Betsy and well she was cool and stable and only somewhat nuts. She asked if she could come by for a few minutes . She's a dental hygienist and came to the area for a job and to be near the ocean.
She came in and made all over Mac. Then she asked me to go to Church with her this Sunday. Without a pause Mac said let's go Gage. Now I was trapped .
I wasn't opposed to the idea of dating a girl again honestly I was just not sure I wanted that pain if it went south.
I'd found a new world of fun sex with men and I was fairly sure that I'd never get that genie back in the bottle.
I was always the calm stable one in my crew and I reasoned that you can't always get what you want. Having Mac added to my world had changed my way of prioritizing lots of things. I didn't look at him with more than caring eyes . That and fair piece of worry. I sorta had developed a whole new appreciation for what Pops went thru.
I got a email from the state that I was eligible to take the test. That I'd need to go online pay the fee and set up a date at a testing center. I messaged my boss first then my Pops about the news. Boss messaged that he was proud of me. Then he asked if I had scheduled a date . Not yet I said working on that now. Let me know , if you want a couple days off to study that's ok.
Pop called and was elated . He asked if he needed to stay with Mac while I went to take the test. He's fine I said I trust him to be responsible for a day. The most he's gonna do is bring his girl over and do what teens do . Pop laughed and said no different than you son .
I got home and shared the good news with Mac and he jumped for joy.
I paid the fee online and got a receipt email.
The next day I got my test location and date and time. It was a four hour drive and my test time was nine am. I talked to Mac about him being alone for the night and he smiled and said he'd be fine. But if I wanted someone to stay over he understood .
I told Betsy that I was going next week to sit for my exam and she said she was proud and excited . I made one more call and told Reilly .
He offered a that's sweet but let me know when you pass that fucker .
Lacy was either here at home or Mac was over there . Her Mom was happy that Mac encouraged her to get good grades. While she was concerned they were going to fast .
I assumed they were intimate but didn't ask.
Reilly and Ash spent weekends together but I sorta felt that it was cooling off some. Either Tuesday or Wednesday each week he'd come by late for a fuck in the shed. I told him about Betsy and he shared that him and Molly had been talking again and that it's been going good . He added that so many of the visitors that fuck around are married guys , and it seems to work, don't it ?
I suppose so I agreed , I mean ever since Mac moved in with me how I see things has surely changed. He opined that Ash had gone off the deep end and was openly talking getting married . He said he liked him and the sex but he won't gonna marry no dude.

He added that he was gonna go hang out with Molly this weekend and that when he told Ash he couldn't come , Ash got super pissed.
Then we slipped in the outside shower and Reilly left to go home. When I walked in the house Mac stirred . You ok , he asked sleepily. Yea go back to sleep I was talking to a friend outside. He closed his eyes .
Days went and I left after work to head to a hotel for the night before my exam.
Mac checked in several times as I traveled and I could hear Lacy in the background .
Pop called as I was leaving for the testing center and in his steadfast calm way he reassured me that I was ready and well prepared. He said I should just relax and trust myself and it will be fine.
I checked in took the exam and the screen said I'd passed .
I called Pop first then texted Mac. Then I messaged Luna and Betsy.
I was starving so I went to grab some food at a burger joint.
I was well into the trip home when Reilly called me and we laughed and took jabs at each other. I knew he was happy. My boss called and said congratulations Gage. Take off the rest of the week with pay he offered. Can I save it for when schools out so Mac and I can take time together.
He laughed and said sure with some notice that will be great.
Betsy called and told me she knew I was gonna pass. She always praised me for being a good man and that I have a solid character. I really liked her a lot .
We had a weekend cookout to celebrate at Pops place , coworkers, family and friends. Our community celebrates the wins and morns the losses together.
At the event Reilly and Molly announced their engagement . I found out afterwards that She was expecting again and that it wasn't a surprise this time.
We got a regular visit from the social worker one weekday evening and Lacy and Mac were doing homework together while I was fixing Tacos. She knocked and Mac let her in and she asked a couple questions and walked around. Betsy popped in as the social worker was about to leave and they spoke.
They knew each other from Church it seemed. We had been going with Betsy to Church on Sundays but I'd missed seeing the social worker myself when we were at church.
A few days later late in the evening Mac plopped down beside me and said I ran away hoping to find something better. I had no idea I'd find everything.
Life's weird like that I suppose I said as I wrapped an arm around him and squeezed. He asked if I was serious about Betsy and I said I was .
Don't get mad ok , he began , when we met I sorta wondered if you might be gay. The way you and Reilly are when you are alone together made me wonder. Reilly and I are very close I said . Yea it shows , offered Mac. Is it cool to love a guy and a girl he asked me. Cool is determined by each person. Reilly and I grew up together from little boys . We have always been super close.
I wish I had grown up with you he said . Mac you did grow up with me. The kid I met a while back is gone and you have grown so much in a short time.
I'm sometimes afraid it will all get ripped away like usual. Don't you fret about that buddy , I won't let that happen.
The next day at work I was talking to the bosses wife and I asked her if she knew anyone that could help me get full custody of Mac. I don't want anything to change for him he's prospering and happy and well he's already become family to us.
She called me later in the morning and said she'd been asking around and I had some options . She gave me a lawyers name and number. I called the number and talked to the nice lady and explained what was going on.
Moments later the phone rang and it was the lawyer. We talked briefly and he asked me to come by.
It won't out of the way so I stopped headed to my last service call. You work for Buck he stated. Yep I replied , I explained the Mac situation and he listened making notes.
It's probably gonna cost about three thousand dollars and a better than fifty percent chance it will happen.
I will need to retainer to start , and we need to do a hard background on you. What's a hard background I asked him. Character references police record school records employment stuff like that. The he asked if I had the retainer . I nodded saying yes that it would take all my tip money from last summer but I could swing it .
Keep it quiet don't tell anyone what you are doing , especially Mac. Do you want to adopt him he asked me . Sure I said as long as he wants that too. This will raise some eyebrows and cause some coffee shop gossip. He sat back smiled and said you really are mature to be so young.
Do you have a girl he asked me ? Yea and I filled him in . Is it serious he asked me , yea it's pretty serious . Is she on board with this , he asked .
I haven't talked to her about it yet , I replied . Before you bring the retainer you should talk to her , he suggested.
So currently who knows about this conversation? The bosses wife and probably the boss you and me . Think about this for a couple days then come back and we can talk , I want to do some research.
I called Pop and discussed my plans with him and he seemed less than onboard with the idea. He finally said being a foster to an older child is one thing but to adopt is probably not achievable . Don't get your hopes up with the plan he offered it's a recipe for hurt.
I called Betsy and went to her tiny apartment and told her about it and she was cautiously supportive of me getting custody but seemed concerned about the whole adoption talk.
The Lawyer called and asked me to come by , that he'd done his research and talked to social services . I asked Betsy to come with me and she happily joined me.
The lawyer ushered me into his office as his staff was gone. He went to the meat of the matter right away. Custody they will do but you forfeit the monthly stipend they pay. So weigh that carefully. The caseworker says it's early to ask that but it's happened . They prefer a longer window of experience to make sure the parties continue to do well. Adoption no, they don't see the benefit to give a growing adult another almost adult .
In my best opinion the lawyer said keep the status quo with the visits and the stipend. Who knows he may wake up one morning and want to return to his Mom. I doubt that's the case but it does happen. You have according to the case done a stellar job with Mac. Give it a year he advised then ask for custody.
Betsy held my hand and nodded as he spoke . How do you feel about all this asked the lawyer to Betsy? Gage is just following his heart and wants the best for Mac. I think it's a noble move but it's happening sorta fast.
The lawyer suggested that this conversation stay away from Mac , it might upset him.
What do I owe you I asked ? Nothing he said but his face said differently. I reached into my wallet and dropped two one hundred dollar bills on his desk. That's appreciated but not necessary he said . Best to keep you on my team I said smiling and we shook hands.
I knew in my heart that what we learned was correct but I wanted him safe. I'd just have to stay steady and do what's right and it should be fine.
Betsy held my hand and stayed quiet . We got to the house and Mac had put some dinner together and we sat and ate . After a bit he asked what's the big secret ?
I smiled at him and said just a lot going on sorry buddy. He smiled at me and asked am I getting sent home or something?
Heck no I said firmly you are here as long as you wanna be here boy! He smiled and said so what are you two getting married or something he said head down but his eyes on us . Then he added I'd sure be cool with it if you two did!
Betsy was smiling and silent . I was stuck now and there wasn't a easy out .
She laughed and smacked his hand and said jeez Mac now you done put Gage in a pickle.
