Bobby and the Coach

Chapter 7

Excited would not suffice to describe Bobby's reaction when they were clear of the administration block.

"Oh David, I'm going to sleep with you every night, all night, that is amazing."

"Mmm, I agree, but we are going to have to ration ourselves with sex. Too much and you are going to suffer in the pool."

Bobby didn't care, just being able to snuggle up with his man every night was the big thing.

Settled into a very luxurious apartment Bobby was overawed. He remembered his first few days at Uni. slinking about, not knowing anyone, looking like a tramp, wondering how he was going to make it with so little money. Now, he was wealthy beyond his wildest dreams, had a wardrobe to die for and a custom converible, the envy of most of the college. But over all that he had found a deep and satisfying love. That thought was when he made up his mind he was going to ask David if he could make love to him completely that night to christen their new home. David was over the moon. Just the thought of taking Bobby's monster in his anus got him an erection.

The reality was more than David could have hoped for. Bobby was so tender and gentle, holding David in awe because of his fabulous athlete's body. The pain of initial entry made him gasp, but once it went away and he could feel Bobby's monster sliding deeper and deeper inside him he had an early orgasm. No problem with that, before Bobby had a monumental one David had two more. Anal sex had never been this good. Nothing in his life had ever been this good.

"Oh God, Bobby, that is the most incredible experience I have ever had."

Bobby was crying buckets of happy tears, he couldn't believe how good it had been as well, but he still thought letting David make love to him was the best.

The next day in more sober mood David spoke to Bobby in private.

"We can't do that more than a couple of times a week Bobby or we are going to drain you too much."

Bobby was shocked.

"Oh no David, I want us to make love every night."

Compromise was the answer David came up with.

"Ok, here is the score. We have anal Friday and Saturday if we have no weekend commitment. We can do 69 or whatever the remainder of the week, but you have to keep showing improvement. I want the World Record by the end of the season."

Bobby wanted David's loving so much he determined to be even better in the water.

Last meet of the season was at home and Bobby broke the world record for the 100 mtrs. Butterfly. The standing ovation from the whole crowd lasted a little over seven minutes leaving Bobby so flustered from the start that the applause level continued to rise.

David knew that they would now have sometime for Bobby to rest and for himself to field more offers and at the same time think about an agent to start handling the sponsorship offers and the endorsements that he was sure would follow.

Between August and October a new agent, appointed by David in consultation with Bobby had managed to negotiate over $10 million of endorsements. Everything from smellies and underwear to shoes and clothes. Speedo alone came up with $3 million a year for as long as Bobby won national and international races. They manufactured special body suits specifically for him, not being told why of course. Organisers were falling over themselves to attract Bobby to their meets, knowing that he would be an incredible draw. The sums offered were mind blowing. Before he went into serious training for the new season Bobby had nearly $15 million in the bank.

Amazingly, this fame didn't appear to go to his head, he was still studying hard for his MBA, to the amazement of everyone.

"I don't care how famous I am David, or how rich I am, at the end of my college time I'm going to have an MBA. I might even go on for a doctorate if the college still wants me here for my swimming."

David laughed at that comment. The kudos Bobby was bringing to the college was worth enough to build a new science block plus monumental improvements to sporting facilities.

The next year the Olympics were on and it was widely predicted that Bobby would take individual gold in butterfly and would take the U.S. team to gold in the relays. His worth then would double, or even treble.

The world appeared to be at his feet until one morning, almost every major paper in the country published on their front pages a picture of Bobby and David kissing. A paparazzi photographer had captured it with a major size telephoto lens. Bobby was gutted and that same day he disappeared. He told no one he was leaving, not even David. He drew a large sum of money from his account in cash, he knew they could easily trace credit card use. The only things he took with him were a grip full of clothes and his computer. He `phoned his parents and told them they were not to worry he was going into hiding until the furore over his sexuality blew over.

The country boy of a year ago had grown up big time. Super intelligent he knew the revelation would be front page until it had been milked to its limit and then he would go back. He went up to the idyllic surroundings of Aspen, Colorado and in disguise rented a chalet for three months. With his internet access he continued to study, actually puting in more hours than he would have done at college. He ran and exercised every day and actually revelled in his solitude. The only things he really missed were David, so many times he wanted to call him, but he resisted, and his swimming, but he daren't practice because everyone at a pool would see how good he was and someone would click and uncover him.

David thought he knew his lover and decided he would risk all to bring him back. He called all the major networks and major papers, inviting them to a one of press conference. The hall he chose was packed with nearly 2,000 reporters and TV stations personnel.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for coming this morning. David Hanson would like to make a prepared statement before opening the floor to questions."

David stood up to the mic and looked at the sea of faces and cameras.

"Bobby McKinley came to USC a little over a year ago, a raw kid from a no name place in the mid west. I fell in love with him on day 1, and I was lucky, it was reciprocated. We have been lovers for most of that time and his dedication to being the best, his love for me and his devotion to his team mates have been responsible for his magnificent performance. He has run away, and my guess is that he will not resurface until he feels comfortable with how the press are treating him and how the nation feels about his sexuality. So you all have a choice. You can be negative and lose a future Olympic and World Champion, or you can make it clear by your comments and the opinions of your readers that his sexuality isn't worth consideration. I can tell you, all his team mates can tell you, most of the students at USC can tell you and I'm telling you. Bobby Mc Kinley is the most genuine, honest and dedicated young man they have ever met. He is a credit to his parents, to his sport, to his friends, to his academics. You can crucify him if you like, but be warned, that will be your loss and the nation's loss.

You call the shots, you decide whether America is worth Bobby's talent. If you don't think so, believe me you will lose him to another nation who will appreciate him."

The hall was bedlam until they all realised no one was going to get any answers, then they raised their hands if they had questions.

"Don't you feel any guilt, corrupting this young man?"

"That question is so pathetic I won't grace it with an answer."

"Ok, Coach, how do you judge your part in this?"

"I don't know why people are gay. I knew I was before I hit puberty, Bobby realised his sexuality here. I didn't turn Bobby McKinley gay, no one turned me gay. The Lord made us the way we are, and we were lucky enough to find each other here at USC, so get used to it."

"What will you do if he doesn't come back?"

"I have no doubt that he will contact me eventually. When he does I will go along with whatever he wants. I will coach JV if I have to, or I will coach abroad if Bobby takes that route, but be assured, if Bobby wants me by his side, I'll be there forever, no matter what."

"I understand that the Great Britain team have asked you to coach them, what do you have to say about that?"

"GB swimming have the sense to disregard my sexuality and have offered me the job on merit. They obviously have a lot less prejudice than we have. I am considering the offer."

"What makes you think you are good enough, isn't the reality that you are climbing the ladder on Bobby McKinley's shirt tails?"

"If you ask the faculty of USC and the swim team at USC, check on our record last season, you will find that we won everything there was to win. I don't think that happened purely because of Bobby. He was just the inspiration."

"You're pretty arrogant for such a young coach with no track record."

"That's not a question, but no, I'm not arrogant, I'm just very confidant in my ability. I know that what the USC team accomplished last season was, in good part down to my ability as a coach. I have received offers to coach almost every decent swim team in the country, at salary's I could only dream of a couple of years ago, so a lot of people with more knowledge than you think I'm good."

"What's your next step then?"

"The season is over, I'm going to take a long break and go to talk to the Brits about next season. You don't intimidate me so as far as I am concerned you can all go jump in the lake and I know Bobby will tell you the same if you think you can crucify him. But I'll make you a promise, Bobby McKinley will take gold at the next Olympics. You just have to decide whether it is for the USA or some other country."

Headlines and news reels the next day were just about evenly split in praise and condemnation of David's attitude. Bobby had seen it and laughed himself silly at the way David had given a finger to the press. He 'phoned David and told him.

"I love you so much. When you book your flight to England, book me as well. Make it first class, we'll show them David."

"Why do you want to come with me?"

"Mostly I need you to make love to me, I'm missing you so much. Secondly I need to get the paperwork together to apply for British Citizenship if I decide to swim for the UK. I can you see David. I have one set of great grandparents who will be my entry qualification. I have already talked to the chairman of selectors for the UK swimming team."

David was blown away, Bobby hadn't let the grass grow under his feet.

"Don't you want to swim for this country then?"

"Of course I do, but I'm not going to put up with any crap about being gay. I love you and now that the whole world knows I'm not going to hide it any more. There are only three people that matter to me in the whole world, my parents and you. I know you all love me and support me, that's good enough for me."

Someone had been listening in on the conversation somehow because the next day, David's press conference was reported almost verbatim with back up comments from the Dean at USC, fully supporting his coach and Bobby, comments from swim team members lauding David and Bobby as inspirational influences on their swimming and a comment from his parents saying how proud they were of their son. In a late addition to most copies was the news that Bobby was going to England to talk to the United Kingdom selectors for swimming.

For the next few days newsreels were full of people coming out in support of Bobby. Chairman of the US Olympic committee was first.

"Bobby McKinley is a national treasure, we must do everything in our power to make sure he knows that his country won't turn its back on him because of his sexuality. This is the 21st. Century, not the dark ages. He is a wonderful young man that will honour his country if they give him the chance."

That was the tone of every interview, word on the street was the same. Most people interviewed didn't give a dam, they just wanted a brilliant swimmer to be there for his country. The gay community went wild, producing T shirts and other memorabilia to advertise their support for Bobby and David.

The final piece of the media circus came at JFK on the morning they were going to depart for England. A press conference was held at the behest of the airport authority to stop a potential riot.

"Bobby why are you going to England?"

"I'm taking a holiday and it's only natural I should go with David."

"Why are you going to England Coach Hanson?"

"I've been invited by the British to talk about a coaching appointment."

"What will you do Bobby, if your coach takes up a post in the UK?"

"I will accept British Citizenship so that I can be with him and still swim at the top level."

"Don't you want to swim for the USA then?"

"Yes, more than anything in the world but I won't stay here if either of us are to be persecuted because of our love for one another."

"What will happen to all your sponsorships if you go to England?"

"I expect I will lose some of them, maybe all of them, but I never started this to make money, I just wanted to go to a good college to get my degree, the swimming was incidental and still is."

"Are you trying to tell us that you are still puting in all the required study time to get a degree?"

"No, I'm not trying to do anything except live my life to my standards. Ask the dean at USC if you want to know what I am achieving academically."

David was dumbfounded at the self confidence Bobby showed and asked him about it in the departure lounge after the press conference.

Bobby giggled, "I lied a little about the money not being my motivation. Knowing that I have more money than I will ever be able to spend, and having your love means I can thumb my nose at the rest of the world."

The press did check with the dean and Bobby's tutors. The result was a very surprised bunch when they found that Bobby was in fact well ahead of his peers in his studies and could expect to end up with a first class degree. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
