Chapter 11 -- Bob

I took the opportunity one evening to talk with Bob, as his was one of the first reports I got back from Josh Green in the Grand Cayman Island.

I have always found it better to be sitting in the open air when things have to be discussed with the slaves, even though they might get a bit emotional like Todd when I updated him on his family.

I was therefore sitting on the veranda outside the swimming pool when I had Bob called to see me. I had his dossier on the table face down, as if it were any other folder.

When he arrived, Bob looked a bit puzzled.

`How did you know, Boss, that I wanted to talk to you?'

`Talk to you, Bob? Great minds think alike, or maybe its just telepathy,' and I made flashing signs with my hand from my head towards his. I signalled a spot on the top of the steps and he hunkered down. There is no doubt about it, but Bob Conrad is a beautiful hunk of Canadian slave-hood, with the most beautiful butt in the place that could only be equalled by Rolf in the gym, and that only because of Rolf's former ski training and continuous gym work. But I think what I most liked about him was his slightly irreverent sense of humour towards me as a figure of authority.

`Ok, you first. How are things now with you and Flavio?'

I thought I saw a crease of concern flash across his face.

Master,' -- aha! -- it must be serious if he was not calling me Boss -- Master, you know I love Flavio to bits, and I do make him happy in bed, because he is so super sensitive all over, but with the arrival of Marko, my happiness for Flavio is complete. I cannot take him like Marko does so easily. I cannot deep-throat him like Marko does, and I see the love that he has for Marko and that Marko is now showing for him.'

I let him take a breath, because he obviously had not finished.

The first night, Boss,' -- aha! He was getting more comfortable with the recounting of what had to say -- Flavio took Marko so gently. The way he entered him was so unhurried. The way he stroked and touched him. He had never done that to me and I was happy for him. Any night after that, he has never taken Marko, but waits for Marko to make the first move, and one night when Marko didn't as he was tired -- he had been working with me in the gardens for most of the day -- Flavio just kissed his eyelids until Marko simply fell asleep. It was like a big brother looking after a little brother. I was looking at Flavio and he was looking at me, and I knew that he had found his true love here at the Aloe Palace.'

`And then, Boss, it happened.'

`What?' I asked in surprise.

`I found someone here that I truly like and love. He is one of the new ones from the landowners.'

`Do I know him?'

`Yes, Boss, you do. You took him to bed one night.'

I had done that to the twenty of the `gifts' so I could be forgiven if my memory could be hazy on that score.

`His name is Ivan and I want to know can he be my buddy from now on?'

`Ivan? Ivan, from the Crimea?'

A nice blond Ukrainian hunk with a six-pack from wrestling or boxing or something when he was in the Army, I seemed to recollect.

`Yes, Boss, that's him. Can I show him to you?'

I had barely said yes', when Bob shouted, Ivan, Ivan,' and Ivan who must have been just inside the swimming pool door came on the run, tackle flying in all directions, and nice erect tackle that it was as well.

Ivan made an obeisance, which would not have been equalled by a star from the Kirov Ballet. It was graceful. It was deep and if he were acting, he would have been an Oscar candidate.

`Up, Ivan, sit' and he sat beside Bob, hunkered down on his knees on the top step.

`So, tell me, Bob, what do you like about Ivan, apart from his sizeable privates, and how did you meet him?'

The last question may have appeared stupid, but several of the slaves had little reason to meet others of the slaves particularly if their duties were out in the fields.

`We both work in the gardens, Boss. He is there all the time and I go out when Flavio has no more work for me to do in the kitchen. And what do I like about Ivan, Boss? I like everything about him. He always smiles.'

`Bob, I hate to burst your bubble, but he is not smiling now.'

Ivan was looking anxiously over at Bob and at me all the time. Not a sight of a smile. But, then Bob just pressed in the sides of Ivan's mouth, and he broke into a smile, which put Bob's adulation of his new love in the shade.

`What does he speak?'

`Obviously Ukrainian, Boss. He speaks Russian with Yuriy and Vitali, and I think Yedo also understands him. I am teaching him English apart from his classes with Ross.'

`Where are you teaching him English, in bed, when Flavio was not looking?'

`No, Boss, in the gardens when we are working.'

`And what did he do before coming here?'

`He was a chef in the Army when he did his national service after school and then he was in a kitchen in some hotel.'

`So then, Bob, where does this leave Flavio? Have you told him?'

`Not in words, Boss. My eyes have told him and his eyes have told me that it is time for me to move on.'

`And Ivan, here. Does he top or bottom?'

`Both, Boss, and when he tops, he is a perfect perfect fit.'

`Like a glove?' I said with a laugh.

`Like a very large finger in a small glove, Boss, but a small glove that is going to break a nut to keep him.'

I ran my fingers through both their stubble haircuts, and said `Ok.' Ivan jumped forward and kissed my feet and then hugged Bob. Bob took my hand and kiss my knuckles in a rather Italian style -- maybe learned from Flavio.

I indicated to Ivan to go off, that I need to speak with Bob alone, and he went of and I think just stood where he had been previously inside the swimming pool door.

Bob looked at me in concern.

`I'm ok, Boss? That fertility thing hasn't reversed again or whatever it did?'

`No, Bob, I just wanted to talk to you about something. You said to me a while back that you had been thinking about Canada and your life back there. I asked for a report to be done on your family.'

I put my hand on the dossier and his eyes followed my hand hypnotised by the movement of my fingers over the cover.

You know that I have no part in having people lifted' as they put it. It has been my good fortune to get men like you as my slaves here at the Palace. You also know that going back is impossible.'

I pointed to the titanium bracelet on his ankle.

`This is the report here. The only bad news is that your dad died peacefully last year. The rest you can read here and then the file goes back into my safe.'

I indicated a seat to Bob and he slipped up off the step knelt by the table, his eyes riveted on the dossier. I wondered how he would take it all. Todd Allen when told of his family had been very emotional.

I slid the file to him and leaned back and just sipped on my limewater.

He took the file in his hands and I think they trembled a little, if not a lot, in first few minutes. I did not want to look too closely at him. His fingers moved over various pictures and his index finger followed various lines of print. I realised that he would not have read anything in over a year.

He coughed slightly as if clearing his throat.

`Thanks, Boss.'

It was no more than a whisper.

I reached out a hand and taking his stroked the back of it with my thumb.

`I'm sorry about your Dad.'

`Dad was always sick. It was the cigarettes. It says that he died peacefully in the end. Can I ask you a question, Boss?'

`If I can answer it.'

It says that Pete, my kid brother, has won a lacrosse scholarship from the Buddy Foundation to go to the Université de Montréal. I don't understand. Pete had given up school before I was lifted' and was working in a car wash. I know he liked lacrosse, but a scholarship, and it says a full one. He never really studied at school. Does that mean fees and food and books and stuff?'

`I would imagine so. I don't know about scholarships really.'

`Boss, you're not looking at me. This Buddy Foundation? What's your connection to it? Or are you it?'

I did not reply to the questions directly but merely said I can only reply if I can answer your question. You have asked questions I can't answer. I asked about that and, apparently, one of the teachers from his old school talked to him and told him about the Buddy Foundation for weaker students and that he should apply. Pete decided that he wanted to do better than the car wash. You know you were his hero, Bob. You can even see one of the photos he has pinned up in his room, and if you looked at the writing printed under it, it says My big brother Bob and me.'

Bob was fingering the photo as we were speaking.

`How did they take a photo of this in his room?'

`It was a good firm of investigations I got to do the job.'

`I still think, Boss, that you got him to go back to school,' he looked as if the waterworks were going to break.

`Come here, Bob.'

I took him in my arms and held him for a while and said `What would you say if we look after Pete from a distance and see how he gets on? I can have the report updated each year.'

Bob just held on to me and I could feel his head nodding up and down. I finally shouted `Ivan. Ivan' and Ivan did his appearing trick from behind the swimming pool door. Bob untangled himself and wiped his nose with the back of his forearm.

`You may not have told Pete, Bob, how much you loved him. Brothers don't really do that a lot in words. But I think that you now have another brother here in Ivan and you should not let a day go by without telling him what you really feel about him.'

Bob looked at me, and putting an arm around Ivan's waist went back in towards the swimming pool, and he seemed to whisper something in Ivan's ear.

I did not know how long Bob and Ivan's relationship would last, but if it were to even last a week, I thought to myself that it would be one week less of loneliness in this world and one week of more of companionship and friendship between two caring souls.
