Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 49: Firestorm by Tripp Savidge

  • Scene 1 *

Arnak, this is not looking good, Skye sent as the explosion sent rock and smoke through the cloud cover.

That's the second major eruption we've seen since we left the sirens, Mica said, leading them higher out of range.

Skye scanned for the other wing-mates and the large birds of prey that flew with them. The higher altitudes and cold were wearing on them, but there was so much smoke below the clouds it was almost impossible to breathe if they flew where it was warmer. Though he had taken perverse pleasure in watching the swarms of beetles below getting caught in the lava flows and fire. And they'd seen more than one of the giant worms crushed by the tremors.

We don't have too much farther. How is the boy doing? Skye asked.

He's cold, but I've wrapped myself around him as much as I can. I think he'll be okay, Chaz said.

Is he still shaking? Skye knew the boy was terrified when he realized he'd be riding on dragon back. Not to mention being abducted by a bunch of strangers.

He's relaxed some. I don't think he's used to being touched and was trying to hold his distance at first. But he gave in pretty quickly once we took off and now I'd swear he'd climb inside me if he could.

Smart guy. Having been there, I can understand why, Skye teased Chaz.

Oh, please can we not? River complained. It's bad enough without you getting flirty and ramping everyone up.

I don't mind, River. It's nice to know he misses me, Chaz responded.

Shit, Mistral. I miss all of them.

'We can make up for it when we safely return to Underhill.'

They'd stopped not long after taking off to layer every piece of clothing they had onto the young siren in hopes of giving him some protection. Dragons didn't necessarily like the cold, but it wouldn't hurt them. In their bird form, the other sirens seemed to be coping well. Skye had surmised that the sirens were a type of shifter since he'd now seen them in human, half-human, and bird form. Though he couldn't figure out why they'd ever choose to stay in the half-shifted form.

Skye, what are we going to do about him when we get back? We can't keep him here, it isn't safe, River said.

I know. I was thinking of having one of you take him into Underhill and see if Venci and Lady Telawynn can look after him until we return. Venci isn't exactly the mothering type, but I think Lady Telawynn could handle it, or find someone who can.

I think Chaz should take him. After flying with him, he's the most familiar, and you've said you can't, Corbin added.

'I agree, Skye. He's already overwhelmed, and it would be one less change. I wish we had more wing-mates in Underhill,' Mistral said.

Chaz, is that okay with you? I agree with Corbin, Skye sent.

Absolutely. The poor guy has to be scared.

Maybe we have Chaz take him through as soon as we get back. We can stall the other harpies... I mean sirens while Chaz gets him settled. Maybe we say we need to circle for a while to make sure it's safe, River suggested.

I think that could work. Chaz, can you take him through the portal as soon as we land? Let Venci know to protect him and keep him away from the others.

And that he's a wing-mate, River reminded them.

I'll take care of him, Chaz said.

We should be getting close, I'm going to drop below the clouds and check. I'd rather you stay up where it's clear until I'm sure. No sense in all of us breathing that foul air. Mica tucked his wings and dove through the clouds.

How much time do you think we have left? River asked.

I don't know. It's not looking good. We saw...what? Two more eruptions since we left the sirens' mountain?

And I lost track of how many tremors. Even this high, I still get that weird feeling, Corbin added.

I think we'll need to use the horn as soon as we get back, Arnak. Skye had kept the link open to the dark fae king after he'd insisted the discomfort wasn't worth being out of the conversation.

I agree. There are six remaining groups. If we are able to sound the horn, they should come to us. The Banshees and Boggarts are spirits, and if any have survived, they will arrive quickly. The Sluah can fly but only travel at night. I'm most concerned about the others. It would be best if no one is near when we send them through.

Why's that? Skye asked.

They all thrive on death, preferably humans. Even the other dark fae fear them as they are the most evil of our kind, Arnak explained. The ogres and trolls also feed on human flesh, while the redcaps bathe in their blood.

Could we just leave them here? River asked the group.

Skye felt the answer form in his head. No. We need them as well, to restore the balance.

That strangely makes sense, Chaz said.

Yeah, but can I say I really don't want to meet any of them? River sent.

I have met them, and I think you are wise. I don't have any false hope that they will respect me, Arnak said.

Don't worry, Arnak, we will protect you, Skye sent. Moments later, he felt Mica and then saw him break through the clouds.

We're close but we should stay above the clouds for as long as we can, Mica communicated to the group.

What did you see? River asked.

Fissures have opened in the ground, and in some places, you can see the glow of lava in the cracks. The air is filled with ash, but my dragon did not detect the poisonous gas. I think the ash is from those volcanoes we passed. Mica flew back into the lead.

It was a while later when Mica asked them to circle while he checked their position. He was back moments later. You can see the village. Skye go on down and get the boy through the portal. I'll continue to circle until I hear from you that it is clear.

Got it. Skye tucked his wings and dove through the clouds. He heard Mica's dragon voice rumble before he was shrouded in mist. Probably explaining the plan to the sirens who were still catching up with his wing.

Once through the clouds, the air was still thick with ash. You guys okay?

I've got him, Skye. We're fine, Chaz responded.

Skye? Garrett's mind voice was like a warm hug.

Almost there. Is the landing site clear?

It is. We'll be waiting for you. Where are the others? I can hear and feel them but can't see them.

They're above the clouds until I give the all-clear.

Skye gently touched down, but his wings blew up thick clouds of the ash that had been on the ground creating a blinding cloud around them. He crouched to make it easier for Chaz and the boy to dismount. He was just getting ready to shift when Garrett appeared holding his helmet.

That's more important than my clothes? Skye asked.

Yes. Garrett waited and as soon as Skye was human, Garrett helped him with the helmet. It couldn't seal since he didn't have the armor, but it did let him take a relatively clean breath.

Skye led Garrett toward the gateway where they caught up with Chaz. Skye pulled the boy into his arms and hugged him. Trust Chaz. He's going to take you somewhere safe and get you to our friend who can help you. His name is Venci. We'll join you as soon as we can.

"I don't understand," the boy said before coughing.

I know it's scary, but I promise we'll take care of you. Chaz, take him to Venci. I'll call the others down once you're through. Go ahead and try to open it on your own.

Chaz gave Skye a quick hug before stepping up to the portal. The portal came to life, and Skye smiled at the surprise he felt from his were- dagger.

The young siren was shaking in fear, and Skye heard Chaz tell him he'd step through to show him it was safe. Chaz disappeared through the glowing portal, and then moments later, he partially appeared extending his hand. The boy took it and hesitantly stepped through.

Seconds later, the gateway went dark.

Skye let out a sigh. Mica, Chaz took the boy through. You can begin whenever you're ready. Skye braced himself as a strong tremor struck.

I'm going to have them circle for a few minutes longer. We'll have to send them through once they're on the ground. The ash is too thick to have them wait, and I don't want to land while the ground is moving.

Agreed. Skye turned as Garrett took his hand and led him to a large tent that had been set up near the crates. Skye was surprised to see Teak in the tent surrounded by assault rifles, ammunition, and grenades.

Teak, what are you doing? Skye asked.

Making sure they're all loaded and ready. Anyone doing ground surveillance carries one of these and a selection of boomers. Though only I get to carry Blossom. Teak reached behind where he was sitting and gave a loving caress to the Mech Assault Photon Rifle.

Skye tried to think of a response but still struggled with Teak's relationship with his gun. Garrett pulled his attention away, handing Skye fresh tights while he readied his armor.

So glad you're back with us. The ash clouds started a couple of hours ago and have gotten steadily worse. On the good side, the dwarves showed up not long after you took off. They've already passed through.

Were there many? Skye asked as he dressed.

Yes, I didn't count, but I'd guess at least two to three times as many dwarves as night elves. And don't ask for details because they all looked the same to me.

Skye laughed as Garrett helped him secure his armor.

Might have to just keep helmets on for a while. We put up a tent near the open area as well for changing before and after shifting. It won't keep out all the ash, but it's better. Something to warn you about, with the low visibility, we're having trouble spotting the swarms or worms. We've resorted to listening for them and watching for odd shifts in the ash clouds.

That sucks. So everyone is okay with Teak handling the weapons? Skye made sure to only speak to Garrett.

Sure. It may be new for him. But he can take them apart and put them back together like a pro, and we don't have much to distract him. A lot of the other tech they sent for us, he's found is useless. There's something in the ash that interferes with the scanning equipment and well, there's a fuckton of ash. We only let him do ground patrols when he can go with Gilian.

That makes sense. And if it keeps him calm that's probably better for all of us.

So this new guy you found... he's one of ours? Garrett asked as he double checked that Skye's suit was sealed tight.

What did you pick up? Skye asked.

Enough that Rett wouldn't mind making sure some of the sirens didn't reach the portal.

We'll let Underhill work it out. From what Arnak said, they're not anywhere near as bad, or I guess I should say 'evil' as some of the others yet to come. And the boy siren is under our protection now. Chaz will make sure Venci and Lady Telawynn understand.

Garrett's head jerked up. They're landing.

Skye was just about to answer when he felt a tingle of magic and smiled. I felt the gate, let's see if Chaz is back.

He was, and they quickly grabbed him, pulling him into the makeshift tent while Garrett went to check on the arrivals. Chaz took off his helmet and began to cough. Skye waited until it had eased before mind-speaking him.

Better to keep your helmet on. Did it go okay? He got settled?

Chaz looked up and nodded. Fuck, that ash is awful. Sorry, I was in a hurry, and I don't think it was sealed...so much better.

Tell me, Skye sent.

The boy is already settled and sleeping. Underhill has added a lot of rooms since we came through. Venci has a whole suite and put the boy in a connecting bedroom to his own. Kazemkhor is much improved and will probably be joining his people in another day or two. Lady Telawynn said she and her guards would help watch over the boy.

And Venci? Is he okay?

He's coping. We'll need to remember that leaving a wing-mate by themselves is not a good thing. We um... connected...

With the helmet, Skye couldn't see Chaz's face clearly, but he got enough through the bond to fill in the blanks. Maybe it was good he also couldn't smell Chaz. It was bad enough scenting Venci all over Jayce, but the smell of his wing-mates and sex would not be helpful. He'd never thought of Venci being by himself, and while he didn't have anything to do with the assignments, he should have thought of it sooner.

Do we need to send one of you over to be with Venci? I never thought of how hard that would be on him.

When we can afford to be a man down, yes, Chaz said.

Skye glanced over at Teak, and the fairy must have felt his attention as he looked up.

Not me, Bossman, I have more bugs to kill. Teak glared back, and Skye wondered why the fairy wasn't wearing his helmet. Though he did have a cloth around his nose and mouth. If he was trying for the "bandit" look, he'd be the prettiest one ever. Surely the ash still had to bother him. Even under the cover of the tent, it was still noticeable.

Skye, they're approaching, Garrett warned as he stepped back into the tent.

Garrett, can you get the others suited up, and Chaz and I can send the sirens through the gate.

Can you open up the link to the rest of the team? Garrett asked.

Skye closed his eyes and opened himself up to his full wing and pulled in Raphael, Bram, Noud, and Arnak. Done.

Corbin and Jayce, meet us at the portal. I need you protecting Skye. Those that just landed come to the tent by the crates. We need you to suit up right away before you breathe too much of the ash. Skye and Chaz will direct the sirens through to Underhill. Mica, you can take over once you're ready.

Skye stepped out and had to pause to adjust to the white-out-like conditions. Fortunately they had some landmarks to locate the portal. He pulled his magic and felt the response from the gate. It also helped him confirm he was going in the right direction. He saw a faint glow and took position beside the entrance to Underhill.

Should be almost to you, Skye, Mica sent.

Skye saw shadows, and then slowly, the sirens came into view. They'd changed back to their human form. He turned on the speaker for his helmet as he didn't want to touch their minds more than necessary.

"Step through the portal one at a time. There will be others waiting to direct you on the other side," Skye instructed as the first of the sirens reached him. He felt Corbin's presence as he stepped in beside Skye. Corbin gave him a shoulder bump to make sure Skye realized he was there.

Can I just say, ew? Corbin sent to Skye only.

Skye was pleased at how adept his wing-mates had become at mind-speaking with him. I totally agree and be glad you can't see inside their heads, it's worse than the outside. And if you think their human form is bad, their half-shifted form is worse.

So our new wing-mate...

He might be a siren, but he's beautiful, don't worry. I take it you felt my magic notice him? Skye directed the next siren through the portal.

We all did. Not sure how to describe it. But, yeah, we knew you found a new brother.

Chaz took him to Underhill so he'd be safe. Sort of worried about the next few days. Skye paused as he had to separate a few of the sirens who were trying to pass through together. "One at a time, please."

The ash has gotten to be pretty miserable and there are tremors almost every hour.

No, that's not what's worrying me. Arnak warned us that some of those left are truly evil. We'll need to be careful passing them through and warn Venci, so he has guys to protect him when he checks them in. Skye looked down the line and saw that they only had about ten more sirens to send through.

We're watching for any others approaching. The swarms have slowed, and when Kuai and Bryan did a scouting flight north, they didn't see a lot of swarms, but there are a few, Corbin shared.

Maybe most have already moved south of us. That would be good. Skye stepped forward as the last siren approached.

"When you check in, please let them know that you are the last of the sirens," Skye instructed.

"What about the boy? Is he going through?" the siren asked.

"He's no longer your concern. I don't expect that you'll see him again."

"Good. Mother should have smothered him like the others and saved you the trouble." The siren stepped through the portal, and Skye was very glad to have her gone. He could feel Corbin's and Jayce's unspoken question.

It's an unpleasant story. If you don't mind, I'd rather wait until everyone is together so I don't have to repeat. The short version is he was less welcome in his family than Willow.

Shit. Corbin gripped Skye's shoulder.

Yeah. I need to find Arnak. If we have any hope of getting the others out we need to sound the horn now.

Jayce pointed over to the tent by the crates, and Skye and Corbin followed as he led the way.

Arnak? Skye called mentally.

Yes? One of the several armored men turned toward Skye. He knew the lack of distinction between them was intentional, but it still made visual identification tough. However, he was glad that they had a powered armor suit and helmet that fit the night elf. Skye was pretty sure that if they didn't have one, they'd have had to send Arnak to Underhill.

"Are you ready to try the horn?" Skye asked.

It took a second for Mica to remind Arnak how to operate the mic and speaker in his helmet. When they'd flown to the sirens, they'd only used telepathy. Even so, Skye thought the elf had adapted quickly to technology he'd never seen before. "Yes, the sooner, the better."

"I'll get it," Jayce volunteered before checking crates and then retrieving the horn. He reverently handed the ram's horn to Arnak.

"Um... I'll have to take off..." Arnak started.

"Right, can't blow the horn with a helmet on," Jayce laughed. "Maybe step out and try it and then come back in so we can get the helmet back on."

Arnak nodded, and Jayce helped unfasten the seal. Arnak took a deep breath before Jayce lifted it off his head.

Skye stepped out with Arnak and watched as he brought the horn to his lips and blew. It sounded like a horn, but Skye didn't feel anything magical and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Arnak stepped back into the tent and gladly ducked so Jayce could reposition the helmet.

"Huh, so that didn't work. I was afraid it wouldn't when it wasn't glowing." Arnak held out the horn to Skye.

"I heard it, but I take it that isn't how it was supposed to sound?" As soon as the horn was in his hands, the glyphs illuminated, and the horn hummed in his grip.

"Similar, but when it works, it is much louder, and you'll feel it to your bones if you're fae. You should try now," Arnak said, placing his gloved hand over Skye's.

"Is there anything special I need to do?"

"Picture in your mind calling the Wild Hunt and think 'it is urgent that you come to me.' The horn takes care of the rest." Arnak stepped back and gestured to the outside.

Jayce moved in and unsealed Skye's helmet and gently lifted it off his head.

Skye stepped out from under the tent and lifted the horn to his lips. He pictured the hunt just like Arnak had said but changed it to 'you and yours come to me' and blew. He was hoping it would lessen the possibility of anyone left behind. The horn seemed to vibrate under his touch, and the blast that sounded was one hundred times louder than Arnak's attempt. Skye felt it in his bones and across his skin. The haunting sound echoed down the valley.

Fuck, bro. That was kinda weird, and I get points for not yelling ree- koe-laaaaa, River sent.

Skye smiled and stepped back to Jayce to get his helmet.

"What is reekola?" Arnak asked, indicating that he'd heard River's comment.

"Ignore my brother, Arnak. It's a family joke my Grandpa started, and Ricola is from a television advertisement back on Earth from before I was born. It would mean nothing to you. Or anyone else here."

"Very well. The horn worked. Could you feel it?"

"Oh, yeah." Skye could feel the mental agreement from his wing.

"Now, imagine that for the dark fae, for whom it was intended, that feeling is substantially stronger and creates a pull that we can't resist. If they are physically able, they are compelled to answer the call."

Skye returned the horn to Arnak. "Thank you, but this belongs to you. Since it was for the Wild Hunt, they aren't going to have the need to kill are they?"

Arnak gave a bow and accepted the horn. "No. They take their orders from the master of the hunt, and the 'thought' used when they're called. Perhaps Jayce could store it again so it stays safe?"

"I'd be honored." Jayce took the horn and carefully wrapped it before returning it to one of the crates.

"How long before they respond?" Skye asked.

"With no magic... I don't know. In the past, they came quickly with some showing up almost immediately, but that was because of their fae magic."

"Meaning they have to walk or fly like any other mortal. Shit, this could take a while."

"And so now we wait," Arnak said.

  • Scene 2 *

Skye lay staring up at the odd ceiling of the meeting hall. No matter what he tried, he couldn't get comfortable sleeping in full armor. And he missed his mate's touch. He understood why it was necessary, but it didn't help him sleep. Even having Garrett and several of his wing-mates nearby wasn't enough.

They'd decided the meeting hall was the safest place to congregate since they couldn't sleep in dragon form while the air was still thick with ash - though it had improved late in the day. The meeting hall had survived all of the quakes so far, but they knew if they grew too much stronger, they'd have to evacuate here as well.

Mica had divided the group up into shifts, one team was on surveillance, one guarded the gateway, and the other slept. Or in Skye's case, lay on the ground and worried. He mentally monitored every one of his wing, regularly checking in.

Skye startled when he saw Arnak stir and then stand.

"Is something wrong?" Skye asked.

Arnak tapped his helmet. "Gilian alerted me that the hobgoblins are approaching from the southeast. Or rather, she said creatures that look like Brownies."

Skye remembered Arnak mentioning that they were closely related, so he guessed that made sense. Bryan would activate the gate for them, and he didn't figure that Venci needed a warning. Some of the remaining groups Arnak had said to expect at night. He hadn't mentioned the hobgoblins, but he did expect the goblins would come after full dark. The gnomes he said were more likely to travel in daylight.

Skye snuggled in closer to Garrett and closed his eyes. He knew if Bryan needed him, he'd reach out. Skye passively "listened" in on Bryan, noting that his wing-mate wasn't bothered at all by the hobgoblins. If anything, he thought they were cute.

  • Scene 3 *

Skye cried out and sat upright, his heart pounding. Everyone around him was still asleep as he glanced around the meeting hall. Though he did notice Arnak was gone.

'It's okay, Skye. You were sleeping, and I think Bryan's reaction to the goblins woke you,' Mistral whispered in Skye's mind.

Goblins?

'They just arrived and have already started crossing over. Don't worry; they got Jayce to warn Venci. I'm afraid all of them are a bit put off by the green creatures. Even Gilian is keeping her distance.'

Should I go help? Skye asked Mistral.

'Trust them. They have it handled. We'll be on duty most of tomorrow. Try to rest, and I'll stay alert.'

Skye tried to get comfortable again, and it must have worked because the next thing he knew, Garrett was shaking his shoulder.

"Morning, beautiful. It's time to wake so we can eat before our shift starts." Garrett's voice sounded odd through the speaker.

"I am so ready to be home," Skye grumbled as he pulled off his helmet.

"Tell me about it," River echoed.

"So where do you consider home?" Garrett asked as he straightened out the bedrolls they'd been using to pad the hard-packed ground.

"Huh..." Skye was quiet for a moment as he thought about it. "I was going to say the palace, but the summer house or cabin felt like home too. I'd like to say anywhere where you are, but you're here, and this most definitely does not feel like home."

Garrett laughed. "I told you I'd have you spoiled in no time."

"I miss showers and sex," River complained.

"Wuss. It's only been a few days," Nik reminded him.

"Oh, goody. Rations again." River scowled at the pack Garrett handed him.

"We could try grilling some beetle..." Garrett offered.

River made a gagging sound before responding. "Don't bother. I'll eat my rations."

"Skye, what are you expecting for today?" Nik asked.

"Well... the hobgoblins and goblins came through overnight, and the gnomes were notified the same day, so I'd think they'd be arriving soon. Arnak said that most of those called by the horn are more likely to come at night."

"But Skye, if the horn calls them for the Wild Hunt, wouldn't that mean that they'd leave their valuables and some of their non-fighters home?" River asked.

"I asked Arnak, and he said there weren't many if any children and the females fight as well as the males. While it's possible, there wasn't another option. Worst case, they'll have to go back for any they left behind. I did try to convey that they should all come when I used the horn."

"No children? It's been a hundred years." Nik stopped with his food half- way to his mouth.

"He said only a handful were born early on and it's gradually diminished to no new births. Jhaeros and the boy Siren are probably the last, and according to Arnak, even boy is at least twenty years old."

"You're kidding," River objected. "He doesn't look that old."

"Different races mature at different rates, and we know they were starving him. Malnutrition and poor care could have held him back."

"The poor diet and hostile environment may have also contributed to the lack of conception," Garrett added. "We're flying patrol first. Mica wants all four of us in the air. He's got the elves, Teak, and Chaz doing the ground patrols."

River had stepped outside and returned. "The air is significantly better this morning. Of course if we move around and stir things up, it won't stay that way." He grabbed his helmet and secured it.

"Let's get this over with," Skye stood and gathered the garbage from the rations after he's sealed up his suit again. Not that trash mattered in the long term, but he couldn't bring himself to litter.

As they walked to the clearing, their steps stirred up little flurries of ash. The others must have just landed as there was a cloud over the field.

Morning! Skye sent to his wing-mates.

Hey, Skye. Nothing too eventful, but there are a couple of swarms that will probably reach us today as well as several of those worms coming from the north, Mica sent.

You think using fire to steer them around is still the way to go? Garrett asked.

Yeah, but it's getting harder. Several large rifts opened to the east of the village in that last quake. So you'll need to try and steer them to the west, Kuai added.

Any more eruptions? River asked.

Not that we saw, but the tremors are getting more violent, especially to the south. We may have issues with the swarms turning back, Mica said.

You guys get changed first, and then we'll shift, Skye sent.

Once the others had suited up, River and Nik were the first to strip. Mica had been adamant that they strip then shift immediately. With reduced visibility and no knowing when other dark fae might be arriving, he was taking no chances with their safety.

River was already shifted and circling low as Nik walked out to shift. Moments later he joined River in the air but flew in a larger circle above his mate.

"Go on Garrett. You can be next," Skye said, watching him strip out of his armor and carefully set it aside in the bin they kept in the tent. "I think when we get back, I need a week of just you and me in our bedroom and let Dillon bring food to us."

Garrett smiled. "I like that plan. Don't take too long." Garrett ran into the clearing and leaped, taking his dragon form and flapping his wings in one smooth motion.

"Show off," Skye muttered as he set his helmet in the crate and began stripping. At least it was warm. He walked out of the makeshift tent and into the clearing. Before he got far, he felt something at the edge of his senses. He closed his eyes for a moment, then instinctively fell into a defensive stance.

"I will stop you!" an angry voice screamed as a night elf ran toward him, stirring up a cloud of ash in his wake.

Skye registered the blade but didn't have time to ponder how Valters got it. He knew he could take the man down, but Valters bordered on madness, and that made him unpredictable. He came at Skye at full speed. When he was almost in range, Skye leaped over the night elf and landed behind him.

"Don't do this, Valters. You won't win." Skye saw Mica and Corbin arrive at the edge of the clearing, weapons in hand.

"Oh, but I will. And after you're dead, I'll take care of Arnak." He rushed Skye again.

Skye waited and then dropped swinging a kick out and taking Valters's legs out from under him. The night elf flew forward, tumbling over the hard ground.

"Please give up, Valters." Skye didn't want to kill the elf if he didn't have to.

"Never!" Valters climbed to his feet and came at Skye again.

This time Skye stepped to the right at the last moment and hooked Valters's left arm, swinging him with enough force to throw Valters across the field. Corbin headed that way but froze when the ash cloud rose.

"Enough!" Storm roared from above. River's dragon swooped down and grabbed the still prone Valters in his claws before the night elf had even had a chance to right himself.

"River!" Skye called, not wanting his brother to do anything he'd regret.

No, Skye. This is over, River sent back.

Storm flew north over the village, Valters still screaming and struggling futilely in Storm's talons. Mica ran to Skye to check and make sure he was well.

What are you going to do? Skye called to River as he assured Mica that he was fine.

Give him to the bugs. If he escapes, then maybe he was meant to survive, River responded.

But, River, there's no way he can survive a whole swarm, Nik said.

I certainly hope not. He attacked Skye, and he's already killed one of his own men. He's done with second chances. River's mind voice was colder than Skye liked.

Let him be, Skye. We may not always like our options, but he is your protector, don't undermine him, Garrett said, speaking only to Skye.

'He is right. River is our enforcer, and Father Dragon has given him the wisdom and the power to know how best to protect our wing,' Mistral said.

Skye, you need to shift and get up here. I can see the swarm already, and we'll all need to work to get them to divert around the village, Nik sent, already following River's flight path.

Skye heard the tell-tale high-pitched whine followed by a loud boom of an assault rifle; it repeated several times, indicating that the beetles must have gotten close to the northern perimeter.

Mica gave Skye a reassuring pat before Skye moved into the open and gave over to Mistral. Within moments he was flying in formation with Nik and Garrett. They began their strafing runs on the east side, herding the beetles to the west, while several of their team were keeping them from diverting through the village.

Skye had started to gain more control of his fire and now could do the runs without turning the sand to glass or melting rocks into magma. As he came up from his dive, he saw that River had indeed dropped Valters - to the west of the swarm, out of reach, but they were moving faster than he. Even at a full-out run, Skye knew the night elf wouldn't make it. Well, I certainly don't need to watch, Mistral. Skye rose and banked to return for another run.

By the time Skye was pulling up from his second run, there was no sign of Valters, but the beetles were moving in the direction they wanted, and the gunfire had quieted.

If it makes you feel better, Brother. It was over very quickly. Probably a cleaner death than he deserved. River's tone had a different edge to it that somehow made Skye feel sorry that his brother had to be the one to deliver such justice.

'He'll be fine. If you could be more detached from your love for your brother, you'd see that he is relieved that the threat to you is gone. He cares much more about that than what happened to Valters.'

Mistral, is that supposed to make me feel better? Cause if it is, you failed.

'River is not you, and that's why you must let him do what he thinks is best. He will always hold your safety and the safety of the wing above all else. Trust him, Skye. I do.' Mistral was using the same tone that Kwill often used. The one that made Skye feel stupid and a little guilty. God, I miss Kwill, Skye thought.

Once they were sure the swarm was headed far west of the village and the portal, they expanded their circuit, watching for more. The morning seemed to drag, but they only encountered a few of the large worms. River delighted in watching them explode. Skye didn't want to get close enough to confirm, but he assumed the worms produced some type of byproduct that was very flammable. Or they were just very susceptible to dragon fire because one hit and kaboom.

Skye was ready for a break and to switch off. River had insisted that Garrett land first and shift and wouldn't let Skye land until Garrett was armored, and Mica and Corbin were there watching. Skye glided in, trying to minimize how much he stirred the ash and shifted as he touched down. Within seconds, Mica and Corbin were on either side, escorting him to the tent.

"Come on, guys, really? Valters is gone. No one is out there gunning for me!"

"We're not taking chances. Get dressed," Mica ordered. "You said yourself some of the other fae are evil, and we have no idea when they'll show up."

  • Scene 4 *

Skye sat on the ground staring into the darkness. The air had cleared up, but the stars above looked wrong. Arnak gave him a look then looked skyward.

"Doesn't matter how long you look at them, they'll never be right," Arnak said.

"That had to have been terrible. Not sure why but the stars on Draga are different, they don't feel so...wrong. Any ideas on why the gnomes haven't showed up?"

Arnak turned, and Skye wished he could see his face, but the visor hid whatever expression the night elf was wearing. Unlike the movies, there weren't lights inside. As Garrett had pointed out, that would make it really hard to see out.

"Without steeds or animals to ride, it will take them a while to get here. If you weren't aware, gnomes are little folk, only about so tall." His hand hovered at about a foot off the ground. "I never understood why the King of Light exiled them with us. Gnomes are rarely evil and not all that mischievous. Their only downfall is they get along well with trolls. Some assume they must then be of like mind. I also expect that the tremors and changing landscape has added some delays."

"I hope they make it."

"You heard Kavide. They were quite enthusiastic and didn't need any convincing once they saw the chit and the dragons. It may take them a while, but they're tough and resourceful."

"I think Nik is a fan. He was a bit embarrassed at how they fussed over his dragon, but I don't remember him saying anything about how big they were."

"He was lucky. I don't think Zade was pleased when he found out he was notifying the goblins. He refused to even talk about it other than to say they accepted the chit and said they would come."

"Maybe that's why he didn't argue when you ordered him and Kavide to go into Underhill?"

"Perhaps, but it also let him give more explanation to your man before the goblins arrived. And they will stand with him. It won't hurt to have dark fae guards when the others arrive. Besides, Kavide and Zade are two of my best warriors."

"True. Thank you for suggesting that." Skye got an unexpected chill and looked up again. He worried even more when it appeared that sections of stars were going dark. "Arnak..." Skye pointed.

"Ah, I think that perhaps the Sluagh have arrived." Arnak stood and offered a hand to Skye. "Please, let me do the talking and stay somewhat behind me. I don't doubt your skills as a warrior, but I don't wish to stir them up unnecessarily."

Fine by me, Skye thought as the chills grew more intense. Before the distraction grew worse, he activated the portal then stepped back behind Arnak. He'd been keeping his shields open, and now he regretted it. Skye felt like he was caught in a nightmare. Without a doubt, he knew these creatures enjoyed fear and torment. Arnak had already warned him that the Sluagh fed on the souls of the dying and the calamity of this world's downfall had probably given them a feast.

The first of the creatures stepped out of the shadows, but it seemed the dark came with it like a cloak. Skye was vaguely aware of Arnakkhor welcoming him and giving instructions, but it was taking most of his focus to keep himself calm. He had no choice but to partially shield when more of them queued. They resembled creatures from horror movies, ugly, gangly humanoids with long bony appendages ending in claws. What he first thought were capes were leathery wings.

Oh, God, Venci. I really hope you're ready for these, Skye thought as he watched the first pass through the portal. Skye was still aware of Garrett's supporting presence, but his mate couldn't move closer without risking upsetting the Sluagh. They'd agreed that the others would stay out of sight unless needed.

By the time Arnak directed the last of them through the gateway, Skye was exhausted. He knew he'd have nightmares from this and hoped that Kwill's reunion wasn't too far off. The psion would surely have a way to help him.

"Wait." Arnak put a hand on Skye's arm as he was about to walk over to Garrett for some bond-mate reassurance.

Skye turned and looked around and felt another chill. More?

"Even without magic, I can feel them. Spirits. Possibly the Banshees or Boggarts - maybe both," Arnak said in a low voice. "Open the gateway."

Skye activated the portal and again stepped out of the way, letting Arnak take the lead.

"I am Arnakkhor, king of the dark fae. I bid you welcome. I called you for the hunt so that you would know that the gateway to Underhill is finally open. Please pass through and make yourself known so that Underhill may greet you. Once through, your obligation to the hunt is complete." Arnak gave a bow and a sweep of his arm.

Skye watched closely, but he wasn't sure that he actually "saw" anything. He could feel the whisper of thoughts and sense many others, but all that was visible was the periodic flickering of the portal. Since it remained open, Skye assumed someone or something must be passing through.

Arnak said nothing but continued to motion as if he were directing invisible guests. Skye stood back in silence and pulled his shields a little tighter. He didn't get the same sense of evil that he had from the Sluagh, but it was very strange. Time seemed to drag, and it felt like they'd stood there for hours when the portal went dark.

Arnak let out a loud sigh. "That went better than I could have hoped."

"Um, I didn't see anything," Skye said, glancing around to see if he sensed any others.

"They only take form when they wish. Be glad they took no notice. I had the pleasure of hearing them in my mind." Arnak slumped a bit, and Skye had to assume the king was as tired as he.

"I'll confess that I was shielding so I didn't hear them. I suppose if they'd spoken to me directly it would have still come through." Skye shuddered. No, I didn't want to hear them.

"Probably for the best. They aren't evil, but they can be disturbing. Boggarts are spirits of hobgoblins who have been wronged. There are many given our exile here. The Banshees are more harbingers or protective spirits that can appear in many different forms. Sadly there were very few remaining to cross over."

"So both went through?" Skye asked, wondering how he had missed them.

"Yes."

"Any more invisible types we should expect?" Skye asked.

Arnak gave a tired laugh. "No, but you might wish otherwise. Other than the gnomes, the remaining fae are not much more pleasant than the Sluagh."

"Well, isn't that cheery."

  • Scene 5 *

'Wake up now!' Mistral yelled in Skye's head.

"Skye! We've got to move," Garrett called out, and Skye felt hands shaking him roughly.

He'd been so exhausted when his shift had ended, he'd fallen asleep hard regardless of the armor and helmet. As he came to, he realized that it wasn't just hands shaking him; the entire ground was shaking. And the sound of explosions and yelling were so loud he wondered how he'd missed it.

"Hurry, Skye." Garrett dragged Skye to his feet, pulling his arm over his shoulder and dragging him toward the exit.

They stumbled and almost fell, but River appeared from nowhere and helped. Skye opened his shields and gasped as he was overwhelmed by a barrage from his wing-mates. He had trouble making sense of the images and thoughts coursing through his head. He glanced back and saw a rain of debris falling from the rafters of the meeting hall. The sound of binds snapping as the structure started failing.

Skye's mind began to clear, and most of his focus was on moving. They'd cleared the exit and made it to an open area where they gave up trying to move and dropped to their hands and knees.

"Watch out! Incoming!" Teak yelled, and Skye heard the echo from his bond.

What? Skye sent back. The explosions and gunfire continued, and even the ground was making a sound louder than thunder.

Thank the father dragon you're awake. You need to keep the link open. Can't hear anything, even through the comms, Mica sent.

Duck! Teak mentally screamed at the same time he shouted into his mic. An even louder crash sounded behind them.

You need to move away from here! Gilian mentally yelled.

Skye looked back and saw the meeting hall collapse and then explode outward as one of the largest worms he'd seen yet burst up through the debris. It let out a screeching roar that had Skye clutching his helmet.

He had barely registered the new threat when Teak and Gilian began firing. The whine and then kaboom as their guns blasted the worm.

You guys need to move now! Teak shouted.

Skye didn't like the feeling he was getting from Teak. It reminded him too much of when the fairy first arrived on hell-world. But right now, he was more focused on getting out of the way of the worm, which was larger than a train locomotive. Even with the massive holes Teak and Gilian had blown out of it, it was still roaring and thrashing.

Another worm incoming, just went under the perimeter to the north, Kuai sent to the team.

Fuck, I can barely walk, let alone run, Garrett grumbled.

Skye had to agree. The ground was shaking violently enough; he was doing a half crawl to get out of the way. He saw boots appear in front of him and arms started pulling him up.

Take this, you'll need it, River said, shoving an assault rifle into Skye's hands.

Skye looked up, trying to do a quick check on time of day. What he saw was no help, black clouds streaked with lightning. No wonder it was so noisy, an electric storm on top of the earthquake.

A shower of dirt fell on him and another roar as a second worm burst through the ground, toppling the remains of a hut that once stood there. It's maw opened wide, showing the rows of sharp teeth on its four jaws.

Skye pulled up the weapon and felt the hum as it charged. He normally should have been able to hear it as well, but not today. The light glowed green, and Skye braced himself on a knee as he squeezed the trigger, the high-pitched whine got through the din, and then he saw the flash as the proton blast hit one of the jaws, blowing it off. We never practiced with the ground moving, Mistral.

Garrett's shot took of another while River peppered the main torso. "Fuck these things are tough to kill when you can't use dragon fire," River called through the comm.

Skye only understood him because he heard him in his mind at the same time. And River was right, fire worked much better, but no way could they use it in such tight quarters. It was dangerous enough using the assault weapons.

Everyone cover, Teak called as he lobbed a grenade into the open mouth of the worm.

Skye only had seconds to wonder before it was raining worm guts. He ducked and made sure his visor was protected - it would be a bitch to clean.

Jayce and Bryan, I need you to shift and help me and Corbin. We've got swarms coming back up from the south. Mica continued, directing their entire team until everyone knew what position they were to take.

Skye and Garrett awkwardly made their way to the border nearest the portal. The tremors were finally easing but it was difficult to walk even so. The sky unfortunately had not cleared, and lightening still cracked and burned high above them.

I've never seen a storm do that, Skye said to Garrett as they passed beyond the portal to take up position.

Maybe it has something to do with the seismic activity and volcanoes, Garrett said.

Another worm is tunneling toward the center of the village, Kuai warned.

I'm on it, that creepy crawly won't know what hit it, Teak broke off in gleeful mental laughter.

He took another pill, I just know it. Skye hefted the large rifle to his shoulder and tried to find a comfortable stance.

I can't blame him, Skye. If I thought it would work on me, I might steal one. This world is fucked up, Garrett sent to his mate.

Skye wished he could sense the "enemy," but he'd already discovered that they weren't sentient enough to register with his powers. He had to rely on his eyes. Even the marvelous state of the art scanners Cocachet's team had sent had turned out to be useless here. Teak thought there was a mineral in the ash and soil of the planet that was causing the problem. At least the weapons worked.

I didn't have a chance to check my bio-comm, how long did I sleep? Skye asked.

It was a good six hours. It's almost mid-day. Yeah, I know it's hard to tell. Wonder what caused the worms to act up or the beetles to turn?

I'm betting they weren't too keen on the tremors - especially travelling under the surface. We also seem to be on this island of calm between eruptions to the north and south. We saw on our flight back how far the destruction had spread.

True, and as flammable as those worms are, burrowing into one of those fields of lava would be a quick end.

As if they'd tempted fate, a huge explosion sounded, and the ground shook. Skye looked to the south and saw a huge fiery plume shooting into the sky.

And that might be why the beetles turned. Maybe they could sense the build up and get that same warning we do.

Skye, incoming. Um...not sure how to say this, but it looks like an army of giants? They're just entering the foothills on the west so you've got maybe an hour before they reach you, Corbin sent.

Arnak? Skye mentally called.

On my way. And it is most likely the ogres. While it is overcast, the trolls don't usually come out in daylight.

Great, Skye thought, and then it hit him. Mistral, how is a giant going to get through the portal? It's a big opening by human standards, but it isn't giant-sized.

'They got here, so we have to assume it's possible,' Mistral answered.

Skye scanned the horizon but saw no signs of beetles or worms. The ash had cleared, but he figured with the eruption that just happened, it wouldn't be long until visibility was back to zero. Perhaps the winds would be in their favor.

We might not be seeing anything but from the sounds of gunfire and explosions, the others are, Garrett commented.

It's mostly Gilian, Teak, Nik, and River dealing with the worms in the village and then Bram and Raphael on the south border, Skye responded. He couldn't help but track all of them, alert for any signs that they were in personal danger or needed help.

"Have you seen them yet?" Arnak asked as he approached, the tech giving his voice a raspier tone than usual.

You can mind-speak, Arnak. It is easier with all the noise, and no, we haven't seen anything yet, Skye answered.

The gunfire finally quieted as they waited. Skye wasn't sure he was ready to meet ogres, but he did want the evacuation over so they could leave this place and never look back.

I see them, Garrett said, pointing. Then lowered his rifle. Don't want to make a bad first impression.

How do we handle this, Arnak? Skye asked.

Let me do the talking. I'll have to remove my helmet, but if you keep yours on, they may just assume you're night elves.

When the giant creatures came close enough to hail, Arnak called out a greeting while Skye activated the portal to Underhill. Once it was set, he and Garrett both stepped back as if they were acting as Arnak's guards. Skye was thankful for the closed helmet and how it concealed his facial reactions.

Ogres were ugly. Nausea producing ugly. Skye was somewhat surprised there were so few, only about twenty if his count was right. But what they lacked in numbers they made up for in size. He could understand why Corbin described them as giants. Their hides varied in color from a sickly green to blackish-brown to a putrid yellow. Their skin was blemished and lumpy, and their hair appeared to be a darker color of their hide. The females were no more attractive and only distinguishable because of the large sagging breasts.

Don't let them bait you, Arnak warned. They may try to start a fight so they can kill you and claim your dead body as spoils. They eat humans but love the taste of elf.

I don't think so, Skye thought to Mistral. Skye wasn't taking chances and pulled his magic. He'd make sure they did not end up as an ogre meal.

"What do we hunt?" the largest of the ogre's asked when he reached them. His hide was green and his hair, course and knotted with leaves and twigs.

"I am Arnakkhor, king of the dark fae. I don't believe we have met." Arnak gave a brief bow. "I called you because Underhill has opened the portal for us to return. Those who exiled us are dead."

"I am Thockta, son of Drockta and cheiftain of my clan. Who do we fight?"

"You do not need to fight; the call is satisfied when you cross into Underhill," Arnak answered.

"What is Underhill?" Thockta asked.

"It is the home of the fae, dark and light. It is a world very different from this where you will find food and shelter that suits your people. Surely your clan has stories or shared what it was like."

Thockta grunted.

"Did you bring all of your tribe? This world is dying and all need to leave."

"We have all." Thockta looked curiously at Skye and Garrett.

"Your skins are very strange, King. And why do your warriors hide their eyes."

"Underhill provided the skins to protect us from the bad air and the creatures who attack. Our duty is to guard the portal and help the rest of you escape," Arnak explained.

The rest of the ogre's caught up, and it was the first that Skye realized that there were a few young ogres as well, judging from their size.

"Thockta, you may wish to cross first so you can prepare the way for your people. There is a guardian on the other side who will record your name for Underhill and direct you on."

Thockta turned and spoke quietly to what appeared to be his leaders. They began grouping the ogres, putting the females and smaller ones in the middle. He turned to look at the portal, and Skye wondered if he was having the same concern about size.

As if Underhill had realized the challenge, the portal glowed a little brighter and grew until it was almost doubled in size. A few of the ogres might still have to duck, but they would not have to crawl through the gateway.

Without another word, Thockta stepped through the portal, and the others began following. Skye felt some of the tension leave his shoulders and let out the breath he'd been holding. Well, Mistral, that went better than I was expecting.

'Their minds were not pleasant, I feel as if need to bathe in a large lake to remove the filth,' Mistral responded.

Sorry about that, I thought I had to keep my shields down, so I had time to react if they tried anything. I'm not used to the creatures we encounter thinking of how much they'd like to dismember and eat me. That one yellowish one is staring at me a little too much for my comfort.

If you didn't realize, the horn creates a type of compulsion to those it calls. Under other circumstances, they'd have happily feasted on us before stepping through. But indicating that their crossing was the purpose of the call, forced them to ignore their hunger, Arnak explained mentally as they watched the ogres step through.

One of the last ogres had to bend to fit through, and Skye bit his lip at the sudden view of the beast's very large genitals swinging into view.

Oh, my God, Garrett. How am I ever going to bleach that out of my head. That thing was bigger than my leg! And can I just say yuk, there is a reason for bathing and personal hygiene.

Skye could feel Garrett's mental laughter in response. Do you think you should have seen if your magic noticed any of them?

Skye turned to glare at his mate and huffed when he realized Garrett couldn't see or appreciate the wrath he was conveying with his eyes. My magic. Did. Not. Notice.

Garrett laughed even harder.

  • Scene 6 *

Skye and the rest of his group lay on the ground, trying to get a bit of rest before their next shift. The village structures had almost all collapsed, and even the supports for the makeshift tents had given out in the violent tremors. It had taken most of the day before the swarms and worms had finally stopped.

I am so ready to leave this shit hole, River said.

Me too, River. I need sex so bad, and if Raphael doesn't get his mind off of Bryan's dick, I might just have to bend him over myself, Skye responded.

River chuckled. Even if your magic didn't notice him, he'd be a great fit for our wing. You know, when I envied your abilities and didn't think I'd be able to read minds or mind-speak, I thought it must be awesome. I never thought of how distracting it could be or how frustrating and torturous it was. That's all that ranger thinks of; I think you may have broken the poor elf.

Nah, he just got him hooked on dragon dick. It's addictive you know, Garrett said joining in.

That's true, Nik agreed. At least Bryan and Kuai have stopped irritating each other.

What do you think, Skye? I told Nik I bet they're really hot for each other and don't want to admit it. I've picked up a few stray thoughts but not enough to be sure.

I agree, River. Maybe it would give everyone some peace if I nudged them together.

Please? Nik mentally pleaded. The lust is bad enough without their tension. Maybe get Raphael satisfied as soon as you can too. This is the longest I've gone since we've been mated, and it's killing me. I can't think straight when I'm so horny all the time.

Skye felt a poke from Gilian and focused on their bond, opening it so Garrett and his brothers could hear as well.

Skye, we need Arnak. Can you wake him and send him to the portal?

What's wrong? Skye asked.

Bryan spotted dwarf-like creatures coming from the west. I'm guessing that means redcaps. Chaz and I are on gate duty.

Will do. Do you need me?

Always but not for this. Just send Arnak so he can explain things.

Skye stood and quickly woke Arnak. The night elf had adapted quickly to their conditions and seemed to do better with the combat armor than Skye.

What is it? Arnak asked as he woke.

Gilian says the redcaps are approaching.

The trolls won't be far behind then. Arnak was up and heading for the portal without any more dialog.

Skye lay down again and tried to get comfortable. Can I ask you guys something?

That's a stupid-ass question, River replied.

Fine. I was thinking maybe tomorrow or whenever we start our next shift that we should send the elves back to Underhill. Noud had a really close call today, and other than Gilian, they haven't had real training with the armor or the weapons. If the redcaps come through, then we've only got...what? Two groups left.

You think they'll go? Garrett asked.

I'm sure they'll argue. Gilian always argues.

True that. Maybe tell them we need their help on the other side. Both for Venci and to get ready for our return, River suggested.

Maybe we should send Teak back too. There's nothing else he can do with the tech here, Nik added.

Enough chat. You need your rest. We can talk about any details when they wake us up, River sent.

Garrett, Skye mind-spoke only to his mate.

Aren't you supposed to be resting?

**I'm kind of worried. So far, we haven't seen what was in my vision."

Skye, didn't we agree that it was a magic sending? Unless you've leveled up and become a clairvoyant. Even a true 'vision' is still not a guarantee of what will happen. It's usually one possibility.

But in my vision, I saw the lava and fires and the night elves. There were children too.

And the night elves other than Arnak are all safe in Underhill. There are no young children here, and the fire and lava may not be in this village, but we've seen enough of it. The vision may not have been accurate but it got us here.

You're right, Skye admitted and moved in so Garrett could spoon him. Even if he couldn't feel his touch, it made him feel less alone.

  • Scene 7 *

What the fuck, Skye? Do you think I'm not as capable as these other asses just cause I don't have a dick?

No, Gilian, I don't think that at all, and I'm pretty sure you know that.

Then why send me back, why not Corbin? Gilian argued.

Skye had blocked the others out of their conversation. He knew Gilian could be a loose cannon, and he didn't want her heated words in the moment to cause problems later.

We're almost done here, and I need you and Teak to help get things ready for us to return. I need someone who can assess the situation and be able to tell me what our options are. Is the gateway still closed? Do we have a place to stay? Are the elves of Underhill or the dark fae we've sent through a threat? Have they healed the heartstone? These are questions that should be answered so we can quickly act when the rest of the wing crosses over.

One of the dragons could do that.

Yes, but if the eruptions get worse or the fires spread, dragons are resistant.

That's why we have these suits, Skye, Gilian argued back.

They're protection against fire and the gases yes, but they aren't made to withstand molten rock for more than a few seconds. Please, Gilian. You and Teak know Underhill better than any of us.

Skye couldn't see her glare, but he could still feel it as his elf ranger went silent. A few minutes passed, and Skye held his silence as he listened to Gilian's internal dialogue.

Fine. But you owe me.

Of course, thank you, Gilian. Skye let out a sigh and turned to Teak, who'd been watching their silent match with amusement.

Are you going to fight me too, Teak? Skye asked.

Hm...nope. I'd rather have you owe me, Bossman.

Why do I owe you? Skye asked and wondered how much of the red pill's effects had worn off.

Fine. You don't want to owe me, I'll stay. I like playing with Blossom. Teak turned as if to leave.

Teak, no. Okay, I'll owe you. Skye conceded not being able to stand the thought of Teak being in any more danger.

Teak moved up until the face shields of their helmets bumped together, and their armor pressed close enough Skye could feel it. You owe me a full night in your bed. If you want to include Garrett, that's fine. If you want me all to yourself, I'm good with that too. Deal?

Tell him it's a deal, Skye. Please, Garrett sent to Skye.

Deal, now get yourself to Underhill.

You'll have to open the gate for us. Teak walked with an extra bounce in his step as he headed toward the portal, and Skye felt like he'd been had.

Why are you so selective when you listen in? When I need you are you paying attention? No. When my wing is trying to manipulate me, then all of a sudden, you're all interested and throwing in your opinion, Skye grumbled to Garrett.

But, babe, Teak. Our bed. A whole night. Now, think of something you can have Jayce do so you owe him too.

"UGHH!" Skye cried out. You shut up Mistral. I can feel you laughing.

You know, on second thought... Bringing our wing-mates into this hell hole probably counts as above and beyond. I'm thinking you already owe all of them. Hm... I'll make sure to mention it.

Garrett! Skye seethed. Not that his mate was wrong, but he had enough trouble resisting his wing-mates without them all realizing they had a bargaining chip.

Bram and Noud were already waiting when Skye reached the location of the gateway. Fortunately the air was relatively clear. The wind had been coming from the north and the ash and gases from the eruption the day before had mostly missed them.

"Where is Raphael?" Skye asked.

"He went to say goodbye to Bryan," Gilian said with a snicker.

You're loving that aren't you, Gil? Skye asked.

You bet I am. That prick is finally off my case, and oh, the leverage I now have over that bastard. You know how long he made my life hell? I'm going to enjoy this.

Skye considered asking about Bryan and wasn't she jealous but quickly discarded the notion. He'd likely end up shivved if he brought it up. Gilian was by far the most bristly of his wing.

"Anything we should tell Venci?" Gilian asked aloud.

"Not beyond the obvious. From what Arnak said, the only group we're waiting for is the gnomes. Once we get them through, we'll follow," Skye said.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to keep you waiting," Raphael said as he approached.

"It's fine. We were just getting ready to open the portal. Thank you all for everything you've done to help here. While I'll understand if some of you have to return to other duties, I'd appreciate your assistance as long as you are able. We hope to join you soon in Underhill," Skye explained.

"Are you expecting there is more to be done in Underhill?" Raphael asked.

"I am assuming there will be, but I don't know. Underhill asked me to bring back the dark fae; there was no mention of what happens next."

Ha! You are so Underhill's bitch, River's voice said in Skye's head.

Skye didn't even think his brother was nearby, let alone listening in on their conversation.

"It has been a pleasure, and I can only speak for myself, but I am yours until the Regent releases me," Raphael said.

"Which could be a fucking long time if Underhill is still cut off from Draga," Gilian smirked.

Skye could feel Raphael forming thoughts to reply but then changed his mind and kept silent. Skye decided it was time and closed his eyes, feeling for the portal as he pulled his magic. The hum of power filled the air, and when he looked, the gateway was open and glowing. It had also returned to its original size.

"Good luck," Skye said as he watched them cross over one by one. Gilian was the last to step through, and then the gateway dimmed and closed. Skye was relieved that at least a few more of his people were in the relative safety of Underhill.

Mica, you still in the air? Anything to see? Skye asked the group.

We haven't spotted any more swarms or worms to the north. The south is a mess. We flew a little farther this morning, and the destruction is spreading. Some swarms and worms caught between where the lava is flowing, and the ground has broken up. The one that blew yesterday is about two hour's flight south. It's in the same ridge that runs along the west of us.

Anything on the borders?

South edge is quiet, Kuai responded.

Same with the east, Jayce sent.

North is clear also, but damn those worms sure made a mess of things through the village, Nik added.

Well, now I know where River is, Skye thought.

West is clear but anyone else noticing we're getting tremors almost every fifteen minutes? Bryan asked.

Everyone stay safe and be prepared to shift and get out of the way if needed. Hopefully it won't be too long before the gnomes reach us.

  • Scene 8 *

What do you think will happen when we get back to Underhill, Skye asked Garrett as they patrolled along the northern edge of the village. Unfortunately several of the sensors they'd put up had been damaged by the worms and tremors.

I have no idea, Skye. Underhill wasn't even that clear about what we needed to do here.

Skye sighed. He was so damned tired of this place, the armor, and having to wear a helmet all the time.

Skye! I think we've spotted them. Father Dragon, they're little, but there's a bunch of them coming through the foothills to the west, Jayce sent.

Skye knew that Jayce and Bryan were currently in the air. He thought for a moment, trying to figure out who was closest to where Arnak was resting.

Chaz, can you wake Arnak and let him know they're finally here?

I'm on it.

Garrett, Skye began then stopped as the strange sensation hit him. He was about to say something when the ground shook so hard he was thrown off his feet. Seconds later, a deafening explosion had him covering his head.

What the fuck? Garrett said, crawling over to Skye. You okay?

Think so, just a bit startled. This is the worst one yet. Skye didn't even consider trying to stand up, and fortunately, anything that could have fallen had long ago done so.

Watch out! Incoming! Jayce screamed into their heads.

Skye looked up and gulped. Holy shit, it's raining fire! He froze as he tried to figure out what to do. There was no cover.

'Get me out of this suit, and we can shift, the fire won't bother me, and even the rocks are less likely to hurt us in my form,' Mistral said.

Skye began unfastening his boots and then quickly stripped, seeing that Garrett had come to the same conclusion. Just in case he was careful with his armor and tights and kept them together, using his shirt as a way to bind them. Okay, Mistral.

Mistral took over, and Skye shifted into his dragon form. He snagged the bundle in his talons and took to the sky. Fortunately, Garrett was taking off just seconds later.

Let's get above this, then we can regroup, Skye sent. Chaz, are you and Arnak catching a ride?

Chaz, meet us at the field. I'll take Arnak. Who else is near the clearing?

Got it. Chaz, I'll meet you there, River said.

Everyone else, get in the air.

Fires were sprouting everywhere along the ground where the falling rocks and fire landed.

This is a little too much like my vision, Skye said, looking down.

What about the gnomes? There's nowhere to take cover. I'm doing my best to protect them, but they're moving to slow, and I can't just hang still, Jayce said.

Everyone in the air, head to Jayce. We'll have to fly close to each other, but if we can circle tightly enough, we should be able to block most of the falling debris and fire, Mica called out. Skye let them know what we're doing so they don't panic.

Right. Arnak, do you know the leader's name?

If it's the same chieftain, his name was Manoson.

Skye mentally searched for the gnomes but couldn't identify the chieftain without having met him before. He decided to mind-speak all of them and hope they didn't freak.

Welcome to the gnomes. Arnakkhor, the king of the dark fae is with us and rides above on the dragon known as Mica. Please do not be afraid. The dragons will do their best to protect you from the falling fire, but continue to move forward. The gateway to Underhill is not too far ahead of you. Skye paused and sent his next thought to Arnak only. Arnak, you can speak to them through me.

This is Arnakkhor, please work with us, you are so close.

Why should we trust you? the voice responded, but Skye was pretty sure the gnome had spoken aloud. Somewhat pointless given the roar of the explosion and earthquake.

Manoson, is that you. You know me of old. We have history, and you should know you can trust me. Underhill sent the dragons here to this world to bring you home.

Skye, there is too much fire in the way for them to get through, Jayce said.

If we used dragon fire to clear a path, it would burn up all the usable fuel, and the fires should die out, Mica suggested. Kuai, help me. Skye, warn the gnomes.

Um...you just did. They can hear you, Skye said, embarrassed that he hadn't thought to close the open link. There were so many, he was doing all he could to maintain the telepathy with no capacity for nuance.

Right. Okay, please stop where you are and turn away from the east, Duck close to the ground and cover your heads, Mica instructed.

Skye could hear the roar of the dragon fire over the shaking ground and rumbling volcano. He watched as they cleared a wide swath up to and around the threshold of the portal. Mistral moved him into position with the others, spreading his wings and trying not to grimace as he felt the impact of the debris hitting him. They couldn't stop everything, but hopefully it was enough.

Okay, move! Mistral sent mentally at the same time his dragon roared.

Skye was proud and couldn't help the slight amusement at the sight of the tiny people scurrying forward. From what he could see, there were men, women, and even little ones. Most of those were being carried in slings and on backs. Perhaps Arnak was wrong about the most recent births.

He let the mental link to the gnomes lapse. It was draining and also giving him a headache. He expected it hadn't been pleasant for the gnomes either. As they drew closer to the portal, Skye realized he needed to land. He was too far away to activate the portal.

You know if you had learned how to do a partial shift, you could have changed to your human form with dragon scale skin, Garrett taunted.

Now is not the time, Garrett. I'll learn when you stop fighting me about learning magic. So for now, just stuff it.

Skye broke off when he was in a position that didn't put the gnomes in any danger. He flew around and approached the gateway from the south, keeping below the others. He landed harder than he'd have liked, but he was there. He wasn't sure if he could trigger the gate in his dragon form but figured it was worth a try.

Mistral closed his eyes, and Skye pulled their magic as he felt for the portal. It responded and came to life. Thank God, Mistral, it worked. Mistral spread his wings wide, covering the approach to the portal. Given his size and wingspan, he made a pretty good roof.

It seemed to take forever before the first of the gnomes reached the gateway. They were exhausted and soot-covered. Skye opened his mind to them again.

Pass through the portal as quickly as you can. There will be people waiting on the other side to help you, but please be patient with them. Better to wait there where it is safe than here.

The gnomes apparently didn't need any more coaxing and ran through the portal, sometimes three or four at a time. I'm sorry Venci, Skye thought knowing it would create chaos on the other side.

Skye felt Garrett land nearby and Rett expanded his wings, extending the coverage for the gnomes. Damn there's a lot of them compared to the other fae.

Yeah, Skye agreed and smiled. There were probably hundreds and while they were ragged from their journey. He watched as they smiled and waved. When one stumbled from the shaking ground, another picked up the fallen gnome and helped them through. It was obvious they were working together. He spotted a few, both men and women, directing the others, encouraging them, and guiding them onward.

Even in his dragon form, Skye was aware of the heat from the fires. The ground was still shaking, but it was less of an issue for Mistral. He glanced toward the village and saw that it was engulfed in flames. He could see cracks and rifts in the dirt; some appeared to be glowing as if the ground underneath were on fire as well.

This place is truly worthy of the name hell hole, Garrett sent.

As the gnomes all drew closer, more of the wing landed and provided cover. A large crowd had now formed, with the portal being the bottleneck to get them all through.

'Nothing to do but wait and herd them into Underhill,' Mistral whispered.

Mica, can you bring Arnak. I want him to go through as soon as the last of the gnomes are in Underhill. Jayce, can you get the horn? Also, is there anything else in the crates we need to take back?

Sky cringed again as he felt the heat and impact from something hitting his back. He glanced toward the village and beyond. It was nothing but flames. Occasionally there was another explosion, and from what flew, he expected the remaining worms were meeting their end.

The last of the gnomes stepped through, and Skye turned to look for Arnak.

"I should be the last to leave," Arnak said as he approached, his faceplate blackened with soot.

"Now." Skye wasn't going to take time to argue, swinging his tail around he pushed Arnak through the portal. He'd rather beg forgiveness later than risk the dark fae's king.

That should be the last of them, Skye. Or at least, the last we can hope to save, Garrett sent.

Mica stepped up to Skye already shifted and back in his armor. Let me do my job, Skye.

I want to be last, Skye sent.

No. I know you're afraid of the gate closing or one of us getting hurt, but that's not your call right now. Jayce, did you get the horn? Mica asked.

Got it. Jayce was back in naked human form and held up the horn for them to see.

Go through now! Mica ordered. Chaz, you're next. Then Nik and River.

Please, Mica, I can't live with losing any of you. Please let me be the last, Skye pleaded.

Not this time. Mica turned to watch the others step through the portal. Kuai and Bryan shift back, you're next.

Mica, may I suggest the last of us to leave hold hands? It may not mean anything, but if the gate sees us as one, it may be less likely to close, Garrett said.

As long as you and Skye are first, then Corbin and me. Go ahead and shift.

Mica didn't give Skye time to dress, pushing him toward the portal before he could even grab his armor. He clasped Garrett's hand tightly.

I'm with you, Skye. And I've got Corbin's hand. We are all getting through.

Skye felt the stone under his feet and a sense of vertigo as he stumbled back into Underhill. Garrett's grip on his hand stayed firm and didn't let Skye fall. He'd barely gotten himself steady when he was wrapped in Garrett's, Corbin's, and Mica's arms. He didn't even try to stop the tears as he buried his face in Garrett's neck.

  • Scene 9 *

Skye's head and whole body felt like it was vibrating with magic. It wasn't painful, but it was disconcerting and something he didn't ever remember feeling before. It struck him that the magic felt like it was hitting him like the waves of the ocean. He tried to ignore it as he held Garrett and reveled in the connection to his wing-mates. He methodically checked each one feeling a touch of regret that not all of them could be with him in Underhill. When he was sure that everyone who was supposed to be there was accounted for, he felt a surge of relief.

"Okay, bitches. You've had him all this time. It's my turn!" Venci yelled.

Skye turned out of Garrett's arms and found himself in a bone-crushing hug. He opened himself up to Venci and choked back a sob. Hey, hey, I got you. It's okay we're all back safely.

Don't you ever fucking leave me alone again. I am built to be pretty, not strong.

I think you are very damn strong and brave as well. Thank you, Venci, for all your help. I want to hear every sordid detail, but maybe after a bath and some real food?

Venci looked into Skye's eyes, his own filled with tears. I guess that would be okay.

"Whoa," Skye grabbed Venci's arm as he stepped back and really looked at him. He was wearing dark brown leather pants and a vest that set off his copper skin perfectly. "Damn. You look amazing."

"Oh, please. I always look amazing. But 'Underhill' decided I had to go native and stole all my clothes. I'm doing the best with it I can, and while the bling is nice, I miss my colors."

"No, Venci. You don't need colors. You have never looked hotter," Skye said and could feel Venci and his dragon preen.

"It's going to take more than flattery for me to forgive you, but Prada said to tell you it's a good start," Venci snipped.

"Yeah, and what does your dragon want?"

Venci gave a gleeful laugh as he left the room, probably knowing Skye would pick it up from his thoughts. Skye sighed and turned to Garrett. We may have to make a schedule to repay all the debts I owe.

Garrett laughed. "Fine by me. I'm looking forward to it." He pulled Skye back into his arms. But after I've had my fill of you.

"Follow me, I'll get you set up," Venci called.

Skye took the time to look around. "Wow, Underhill did some upgrading." He also saw the likely reason for the feeling of magic, the heartstone. It glowed brightly and pulsed like a beating heart in the center of the room. Skye could tell that something had changed with it as it felt exponentially stronger than it had when they were there last.

"I wonder if they were able to heal it, the heartstone feels cleaner and stronger," Garrett said with a tinge of awe in his voice.

"The room is much bigger too, isn't it? I'm not imagining that?" Skye asked.

"Oh yeah. It almost looks new," Corbin added.

"Maybe get cleaned up and eat before you pass out?" Mica suggested. "I'm sure Venci will answer all your questions later."

"Okay." Skye turned and walked into the antechamber, stifling a gasp at the now ornate gallery with glistening mosaics, intricately carved and gilded woodwork, and more doors than he remembered.

"Yeah, Underhill's been remodeling faster than we can map." Venci lifted his arms, indicating the room around them. Our suite is through here. The doorway to the dining room moved to the side, but the room is in the same spot. Venci led them into a spacious gathering room furnished with large, comfortable-looking furniture and a stone fireplace large enough that Skye could stand inside. As Skye entered, he noticed that the door had a large embossed royal seal carved into the wood.

"Where..." Skye looked around, waiting for Venci to direct them.

"My room is the first on the left, and the siren's is the second. I'm guessing since the hallway is new, your rooms are this way. Looks like we've got eight doors, so some of you will have to share. If they're like mine, there is a connecting bath. Skye and Garrett go ahead and take the first one, and I'll get the others settled. When you're ready, we can meet up in the dining room. I'll make sure the food's ready."

Skye opened the first door tentatively and stepped through, pulling Garrett with him. His eyes drawn to the huge bed. Garrett stepped away to explore.

"Skye, there's not only a bath, the tub is already full and waiting for us."

"Is there room for both of us?"

"There is."

Skye wasted no time in joining Garrett, carefully slipping into the steaming water.

"Oh, God. This feels so amazing." Skye closed his eyes and sank down until the water was to his chin. Garrett's hands slid up his legs.

"Clean first. Then sex, then food."

"Mm, I like the way you prioritize. It seems like it's been forever since I felt clean."

"Here, let me wash you." Garrett picked up the soap and sponge that was already set out and began his work, gently washing every inch of Skye's skin. He turned Skye around and soaped his hair, massaging his neck and shoulders while he had the chance.

"I love you, Garrett."

"I love you too, my prince."

"Feels so good, but now it's my turn," Skye said when Garrett finished rinsing his hair.

He ran the soap over Garrett's powerful chest and thought again how his mate was perfect for him. There wasn't a single thing he'd change. He grinned as he teased Garrett's nipples and made his bond-mate moan. Garrett's cock thickened and hardened almost instantly. Skye gave it a playful soapy stroke then moved on, cleaning the rest of Garrett's body.

"You're such a tease."

Skye got Garrett to turn around and began work on his back. He looked at the braids and wasn't sure what to do with them.

"Just leave them for now. I'm not going to wait hours before we fuck."

"Well, if you insist." Skye ran his hands over Garrett's round, powerful glutes and let his finger drag down Garrett's crack, gently teasing across his dragon hole.

"Fuck!" Garrett pushed his hips back, and his hole puckered and twitched for Skye.

Skye teased the tender opening noticing how slick his mate was. "What do you want, Garrett? I had been planning on turning you over and riding you..."

"No. Fuck me. I need you, Skye." To emphasize his point, Garrett thrust his hips back.

It took a bit of maneuvering and adjusting, but Skye got to his knees and ran his cock up and down Garrett's crack.

"Skye, if you don't get your dick inside me..."

"Such a bossy dragon." Skye held himself to Garrett's hole and watched as his mate opened for him, and his dragon hole sucked at his cock. He slowly eased in wanting to savor every precious millimeter of Garrett's tight hole.

"Father Dragon, I've missed you, babe. Fuck me hard."

"Mm-hm." Skye pressed in until he was flush against Garrett's body and then began moving. Mistral, I'm not going to last, it's been too long. Can you help?

'Sorry, your body is my body. I need him just as badly. Perhaps remember that we can take turns until our mate and we are both depleted and sated.'

Skye leaned forward, wrapping his arms around Garrett's powerful body and soaked in the closeness of the skin on skin contact. He guided his telekinetic powers to Garrett's cock and nipples, not wanting to let go or have to use his hands.

"Father Dragon. You're going to make me cum."

That's the plan, my love, Skye whispered into Garrett's mind as he chased his orgasm and quickened his pace.

Fuck! Garrett cried out, his cock sending stream after stream of dragon seed into the tub while his dragon-hole squeezed and stroked Skye into a mind-blowing orgasm. He felt like he was pumping gallons of his jizz into Garrett the way it kept going. He loved sharing each other's sensations and the bonus that every time, they got multiple orgasms.

"I so needed that," Garrett said in a soft voice as he moved forward, pulling off of Skye.

"Uh-oh. I think we need to run fresh water to rinse off," Skye said, looking at the streams of cum sticking to Garrett's body.

"Yeah, whoever thought sex in the bath was cleaner?" Garrett laughed, wiping the spooge off and trying futilely to get it to let go in the tepid water.

Skye climbed out and noticed a large pitcher on the sink top. He hadn't seen it before or the cloths beside the pitcher. That's weird...but useful. Mistral, where did this come from? You think Underhill made it appear?

'I don't know any more about Underhill than you do. Perhaps a question to add to our list for Venci.'

Skye used the fresh water to wipe Garrett and himself clean before returning to the bedroom.

"Um, Garrett, we don't have any clothes, and I'm not about to meet up with everyone in the nude."

"Why? I'm sure they'd be fine with it. Actually, pretty sure if given a choice, that's what our wing-mates would prefer."

"Garrett," Skye warned with his tone.

He watched as Garrett looked around and then opened the armoire. "You're saved. Looks like we get to match Venci." Garrett held up leather pants in a pale ivory and then took a second pair out that were larger and black.

They found the coordinating pieces and were soon dressed, and like Venci, they had leather vests with matching pants and boots.

"I kinda feel like I'm dressed for The Lust Factory," Skye said, trying to adjust the tight leather pants.

"Don't complain. It's a good look on you," Garrett growled.

"Well, don't get upset if I refuse to look at you. No way I won't stay hard seeing you like that."

"Huh. You make that sound like a bad thing. I rather like you being hard for me," Garrett teased.

"Jerk," Skye scoffed as he opened the door and headed for the dining room, which was easy to find since the archway was directly across from their rooms. They'd delayed long enough already.

Skye stepped in and breathed in the aroma of the food as his stomach growled. He felt a spike of lust as all eyes turned toward him and Garrett. He felt his face heat as he picked up on how much his wing appreciated the new leathers.

"Make yourself a plate and then join us," Venci said not even hiding the way he looked them over. He and several of the wing were already at the table, but about half of them hadn't made it back yet.

As Skye started adding things to his plate, he glanced back again and realized that Arnak wasn't there. "Venci, what happened to Arnakkhor?"

"All checked in and sent to be with the rest of the night elves. I believe he was anxious to find his wife and son. But be warned, he did mention he was rather angry with you."

"Eh, he'll get over it. I might have shoved him through the portal without his leave."

"Skye, I do believe River is rubbing off on you," Venci's eyes sparkled with glee as he fanned himself.

"We can only hope, Venci, he needs a nudge now and again," River said as he and Nik entered.

"I wasn't expecting to see you two again until tomorrow," Skye said with a smile.

"Well, don't expect us to hang around long but, you know, real food," Nik said growling as he looked at the selection of food.

Skye sat beside Venci and leaned over, giving him a peck on the cheek. "I missed you."

"Father Dragon, don't even get me started," Venci scowled.

"Any problems with getting the last of the dark fae through. Some of them were..."

"Terrifying is the word you're looking for, and no. Those night elves Zade and Kavide were very helpful. But to be honest, I think they were so overwhelmed at being back where they could feel the magic, eating me was the last thing on their mind."

That's only because they haven't tasted you, Skye teased and grinned as Venci actually blushed.

"Like you remember? Please. You left me here all on my own with no wing- mate in sight, I think you owe me, Skye. Well, anyway. They're all redirected, and I was very relieved that Underhill opened a massive opening to the forest directly across from my desk in the antechamber to get them on their way."

"That wasn't true for the others?" Garrett asked.

"No, most of those that came through went down the hallway of doors and went through the one with a glyph that matched. Now checking in those spirit-types probably took a century off my life. If it weren't for Lady Telawynn keeping a hand on my shoulder, I'd have run screaming."

"Where is Lady Telawynn?" River asked.

"She went with the gnomes to help get them settled. She hit it off with their chieftain like they were old friends, and they didn't stop talking the whole time. Gilian and Teak went with the elves back to the hold. Anyone I'm missing?"

"The mages?" Garrett asked.

Venci paled, and Skye felt his stomach drop with the wave of emotion and thoughts.

"Um... they are also at the hold."

"Venci?" Skye prompted.

"No one died. But the spells went a bit awry at the end, and they're being treated by the healers. Itheral said they should all recover...eventually. Aksel has been giving me updates," Venci explained.

"Who is Aksel?" Skye asked.

"Oh, that's Master Mage Quanta's mate. He came with him to Underhill because he couldn't bear to be separated from him. He's a decent bloke."

"The magic 'feels' better," Skye said.

"I agree, but with none of them able to talk at the moment, I'm not sure if they're done or not."

"What? They can't speak?" Nik asked.

"Well... they've been unconscious since it all happened. I mean, the magic knocked most of us out for a few hours, so we're really not sure what happened. Sort of like an explosion, but instead of loud, all sound disappeared then the pain, then you know...nothing," Venci explained.
