Chapter 17 (Sat., Dec 24, 1966)

It was just after four in the afternoon, when we got home and the blizzard was still upon us. Bat parked the Land Rover in its usual position. Marv and I carried the food and beer for the weekend into the kitchen that we'd collected from a caterer, while Bat and Lon got firewood out of the garage.

I still hadn't brought up the fact that the bodyguard had been flirting with me and probably wanted to spend some time together, alone. I actually didn't know if it would be a good idea, or not. So, I brought up the idea with Marv, while we were unpacking the food and putting the beer away.

"You'll have to weigh the consequences." He opened a Rheingold, took a swig and handed me the bottle. "Let's discuss this with Bat and see what he thinks. And we'll have to second guess what Dr. Liang could think about it, and how it could influence the sale."

"Yeah," I took a drink from the chug-a-mug and handed it back. "that's what has been running through my mind, since we took them back to the hotel."

Bat and Lon came up through the basement and put the large logs of firewood in front of the fireplace. I took them the newspapers from the breakfast bar. "Where are Brian and Jackie?" I wadded the paper up as fire starters.

"They're staying at Barbara's house for Christmas." Lon related as he placed a small log and kindling over the paper.

"Didn't know Barbara's parents were Christians." Marv handed me back the chug-a-mug.

"No, they're Buddhist." Bat held out his hand for the wide-mouth beer bottle.

"Then why do they celebrate Christmas?" I got the empty bottle and went to the kitchen to get another.

"Bring four, would ya, please." Bat called, and when I returned to the fledgling fire, he continued: "They're in retail, and Christmas is good for business. Brian helps out restocking and Barbara and Jackie are the toy department. Supposedly, the kid's a real whiz when it comes to selling things to parents. He acts like he's just there looking and manages to shift quite a bit of merchandise, by telling them what he likes. Then Barbara's folks give him his choice of toys for the amount the others earned."

"Cool." Marv nodded like that it was as good a reason as any to celebrate. "Uh, Bat, Ben wanted to ask you about what you think about him possibly hooking up with Liang's bodyguard."

Bat and Lon both switched their gazes between Marv and me. Their eyes stopped on me. "He was flirting with me in the car and the good doctor said that I'd struck his fancy. I just want to know what I should tell him if he calls."

"No!" Lon blurted out and looked hurt. His voice lost its force; he became embarrassed. "I mean, after all, he is an outsider."

"I guess that settles it." I set my beer down on the marble coffee table and went to hug Lon. "I never wanted to hurt you, Babe. I'm sorry. I was just thinking about the business aspects of it. I had no idea you felt so strongly."

Lon had to chuckle. "Neither did I."

"You gonna be okay, Lonnie?" Bat came over to hug us both. "Maybe, I shouldn't have--"

"--don't Dad. It's really okay with you and Marv. You're family."

Now Marv came into the hug. "Thanks, Lonnie, I always had a soft spot for you, even if you were fucking Diane."

Lon looked as if he were about to bolt out the nearest door, especially when his dad asked: "What, the Fuck were you thinking?"

Marv was obviously having fun with this. "Hey!" He waited for the heavy breathing of fear to go quiet. "Hey, settle down. I knew when it started. And don't look at Ben! He was in France when I found out."

"Then, Diane told you?" Lon needed a target for his angry disappointment.

"No," Marv chuckled and gave Lon a peck on the cheek to show that there were no hard feelings. "you're the only person I know who wears Brut. And that blonde wig smells just like you."

"Is that the one in your bedroom?" Bat asked Marv. Chuckling ironically and without humor, he turned to Lon. "You musta looked like fucking Suzie Wong on steroids. Did you wear those pink lace panties and bra, too?"

"Yeah, and how do you know about them?" Lon tried a cheap trick of passing the buck back to his dad.

And Marv revealed just how close he and Bat were. "I told him about the bra and panties. But I didn't tell him that you were involved."

"I'm so ashamed." Lon pulled Marv into his arms and held him tight. "She came onto me, and I wasn't able to resist. I had never had any pussy before, and I just couldn't say no. How can I make it up to you?"

"Kid, that's one question you never ask a lawyer." Marv chuckled and released himself from Lon's stranglehold. "If I hadn't a known that you were dicking her, I could a ended up in divorce court up in Scarsdale. I'm glad it was you and not the mailman."

For the second time today, Bat's color had gone an unhealthy red. He was livid at his oldest son, and he was going to have to find release soon or blow an artery. "Come out back!"

Marv moved between Lon and Bat. "Listen to me, Bubeleh." He got closer to Bat. "You do not want to act on this anger. As your lawyer, I can't let you, and as your lover, I won't let you." Marv's voice mellowed somewhat. "The kid potentially saved me a lot of money." He put his left arm over Bat's shoulder, while still holding his chug-a-mug in his right hand. "And anyway, you and me might not have ended up together, if he'd a kept his dick zipped up."

It was as if someone had pulled the plug on Bat's anger. The high color drained out of his face in an instant. His gaze, however, was still locked on Lon, but the pressure of anger had left him. "If I ever hear of you--"

"--Dad, please--"

"--let me finish. If I ever hear of you screwing another man's wife--"

"--Bateleh, Bubeleh, don't go there." Bat shifted his glare from Lon to Marv. "Bat, you're the guy whose own wife caught him getting fucked up the ass in the kitchen. You're preachin' double standards, here. This ain't good."

As the owner of the dick, which was up Bat's ass at the moment his wife walked in, I had my free hand over my mouth trying desperately not to laugh, but the erratic breathing through my nose was giving me away. Bat's self-righteous glare reached my eyes, held my gaze for a second, and we both blurted out laughing.

"Damn," He took a swig of beer. "constructive parenting is such a crap job."

"Particularly," Marv's lawyer's voice was back. "when the child involved is twenty two years of age."

After dinner, Lon suggested that we put on our warm clothes, five-buckle galoshes and set out for a walk down Ocean Parkway. The rest of us moaned and suggested that we didn't. Bat placed another large log on the fire and turned both couches to face the hearth, rather than facing each other.

Marv had brought his whisky bottle along at some point before dinner, and started pouring abundant portions for the four of us, which made the atmosphere perfect. Bat sat down next to me, leaving the other couch for Lon and Marv. Marv toasted: "l'chaim." We returned the toast and let the alcohol do the job for which it was intended.

"Bat," I broke the silence and had to clear my throat roughened by the thirty-year-old single malt. "I've been meaning to ask you. When did your parents come to this country."

"In 1914." He placed his left arm around my shoulders and squeezed. "That was also the year they had this house built."

"Weren't Mongols subject to the Chinese Exclusion Act?" I slouched and snuggled into the coveted armpit.

"Normally, they would have been, of course." Having realized what I was after, he let my head get closer to his underarm, despite his being slightly ticklish. "But my father was an employee of the Imperial Russian Consulate, here in New York over in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. He worked in the Financial Affairs Section."

"And what happened after the revolution?" My head was becoming light with his scent.

He removed his flannel shirt so I could get next to his damp t-shirt. "As a matter of fact, the Imperial Consulate kept going as the representative of the Czar until 1926, but the staff was being paid by the US government."

"Why?" At this I realized that I was acting just a little bit obsessed, since Marv and Lon weren't listening to our conversation but were watching me, each rubbing his respective hard-on.

Bat pulled me in closer until I squeaked and kissed the top of my head. He took a slow nip of his drink. "Because the consular staff was used to dealing with Russian immigrants, could speak their language, and saved the lazy bastards in this country one fucking helluva lot of work. Don't forget that Alaska had been part of the Russian Empire until less than a hundred years ago."

"So, did your dad get American citizenship once they closed the consulate, since they were being paid by the US government, anyway?

"No, my dad was excluded from becoming a naturalized citizen." I detected a bitterness in his voice that normally wasn't there. "The Caucasians all got it, including the known communists, although not immediately. But dad never did. He died stateless."

Marv quit rubbing his cock and sat up to join the conversation. "I didn't know that. I'd always assumed that he had become an American."

"Nope, and if it hadn't been for me, they woulda probably deported him back to Russia." Bat held on to me tighter. "At least theoretically, they didn't deport the parents of natural born citizens, like in my case. So, he got on with his life." He sighed deeply. "But all Asians were racially ineligible to citizenship until 1943," Bat caught his breath. "and Dad died in 1940."

***

The snow outside, the whisky inside, and the hearth ablaze in front of us were all helping to lull us into the mood. Bat dragged me off the couch onto the floor to unload his pent-up passion. Before I could think clearly, he had us both naked. His tongue was going places, he'd once thought taboo. And he was letting me shove my tongue into places he was now too weak to resist.

Still clothed, but with their dicks out, Marv and Lon were sucking each other, while taking turns watching us. But slowly, ever so slowly, they began removing, first their sweaters, then their shirts, and so on, until they were lying naked next to us. My focus, however, was on Bat's scent.

The huge, lamb-fur rug warmed my back and tickled my sides, as I licked the tiny pleats gathered together around his wrinkled hole. My tongue poked at the supple, folded texture of slick skin; my nose was full of his unique, spicy aroma. As I placed my lips around the whole unopened bud, slipping my tongue into the middle and sucked to create a vacuum encompassing his entry, he moaned my name, drawing the attention of the others.

I broke the seal with a loud pop, massaging his hole with my thumbs. Bat's moaning became very guttural, which told me that he was approaching sensory overload. "Let's take a break, Sweetheart." Bat only nodded. And I realized that I'd just called my best friend's father, 'Sweetheart'. This lovely man was literally twice my age, and I had assumed the dominant role, at least for the moment. I needed it; he wanted it.

As I lay sheltering his body with mine from the side, and we waited for his pulse to slow and his trembling to stop, I stroked his thick, vaguely greying head of hair with my left hand, and drew tight circles on his sinewy ass cheek with my middle finger of the right. My mouth was parched. I licked my lips, making sure my whisper was for his ears only. "I love you, Bat."

He rolled over and pulled my head to him, cradling the back of it in his huge hand. He positioned his mouth directly next to my ear. "I know, Baby Boy, and I need you, too."
