Growing Up Together

This story is complete fiction, and contains some elements that readers may find disturbing. You have been warned.

***

Previously, in Highland Flings:

“Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to end the night with a special request from a certain boy who has something very important to ask someone.” he said. “Grant?”

Every eye in the room turned to me. Time to take the plunge.

I turned to Cameron and took his hand.

He looked at me, squeezed my hand and smiled.

“Cameron...” I said, “Will you give me the honour of this dance?”

A collective “Aww.” erupted from all over the room.

Cameron looked me in the eye, close to tears.

He nodded, not trusting himself to speak.

I smiled and brought him in to my arms.

A collective cheer went up as we hugged it out.

The spotlight was on us.

Mr Curtis turned the music on and told everyone to get into position.

When Cameron heard the music, he gasped and looked at me with genuine surprise.

I kissed his forehead and we started slow dancing.

Everyone else was dancing too, but all eyes were on us.

We didn't care though.

We only had eyes for each other.

“How did you swing this?” Cameron whispered.

“Oh,” I replied nonchalantly, “I just called in a favour!”

He snorted and rested his head on my shoulder.

He started singing softly at the chorus, and I joined in.

“So take this feeling 'n make it grow, Never let it - never let it go.”

I kissed his forehead again.

“I love you, so much.” I whispered.

“Me too,” he whispered back.

“Always...”

From the pen of Grant Robertson and Cameron Black, March 16th 2018.

And now, dear reader, our story lurches forward in time. We jump to when we are on the cusp of our manhood, about to start our first day of high school.

A terrifying prospect for anyone. Trying to find out where you belong, finding out how to stand on your own two feet.

We're both so glad we had each other.

The fact that we were boyfriends should have been complete immaterial to everyone, but we knew that it would definitely not be.

Nothing could have prepared us for what did happen though.

I hope that this story, taken from both our points of view, will stand as a testament to the human condition, the unimaginable cruelty of the establishment, and the incredible kindness of strangers and friends.

With love,

Grant and Cameron :-)
