Melissa heard the door open, then close. She did not move her head and continued working on the paperwork that had piled up on her desk the last few days.
Without looking up, Melissa said in an annoyed tone, "I am really busy, so just tell me what your problem is?"
Betty just stood there not saying anything, finally Melissa said, "Come on, make it quick so I can get back to my work and you can get back to class."
Betty started crying and said, "My parents kicked me out, I have no place to live. All I have is what I am wearing."
Melissa looked up from her paperwork and said curiously, "What? I think you are overreacting to whatever is going on at home. Why would they want to kick you out?"

Melissa said in response, "Oh I know I will owe you. This weekend or at a later date?"
Janet thought about it and said, "I am going to wait, trust me, you'll regret owing me such a big favor."

Melissa gave Marylou her lawyer's address and told her when to be there. After Melissa was done speaking, Marylou added, "We don't care what happens to her, she can die and go to hell as far as we are concerned, we will be there. We don't want her to come home tonight, she can sleep in the gutter."
Melissa was getting upset with the conversation and said, "Fine, that won't be a problem. Could I come by and at least pick her clothes up."
There was a long silence before Marylou said, "That would fine, could you come over right now, we want her crap out of here, if it's still here when my husband gets home, he'll burn it."
Melissa wasn't happy and said, "Fine I am on my way over there now."
Melissa hung up the phone and grabbed her coat. As she walked out the door, her secretary handed her Betty's address and said, "I will take care of your calls and reschedule your appointment with the superintendent."
The drive to Betty's house was short. When Melissa arrived, she noticed that several duffel bags and a couple of backpacks were on the porch.

Melissa thought about it for a moment and said, "I don't know, but if she is, will there be trouble?"
Marylou answered, "As long as we are rid of her once and for all, my husband will not cause trouble, and neither will I. Just promise me you will tell her what I asked you to say."
It took a few trips to the car to put everything in her trunk, then returned to the school. The rest of the day dragged on, finally, the bell rang signaling the end of the day.
Melissa kept looking at the clock, the buzzer on her desk rang, making Melissa jump. She heard her secretary say, "Ms. Thornton, they both are here, do you want me to send both in, and one at a time?"
Melissa thought about and said, "Might as well get this over with, send them both in, and you can leave if you like."
The door opened and her son Todd and Betty walked in. Todd quickly asked, "What's up with Ms. Hendricks? She bolted out the door as soon as you told she could leave."
Melissa shrugged and said, "I don't know, maybe she's got a hot date."
