Chapter 1 - Premonition

Tom had come to the realisation that he really shouldn't be there slowly, the thought forming in the back of his head sluggishly as if it was reluctant to exist. He began to experience a gradually rising sense of urgency, a gut feeling of imminent danger. But when he'd finally comprehended what his gut was telling him, his reaction was instant. He immediately got to his feet and ran for the door of his 3rd floor apartment that he shared with his best friend Jake, ignoring his messy blonde hair reflected in his bedroom mirror and stopping only to grab a pair of pants.

Thankfully, he didn't see Jake as he quickly made his way to the door that would lead to the hallway, panting heavily and sweating. As he escaped the apartment, he saw that there were a few people in the corridor, walking to or from their homes, but Tom ignored them completely, his focus aimed solely on the elevator about 100 metres away. He just had to get out of there, he knew he wouldn't be safe if he remained.

Tom made it to the basement carpark, seeing that Jake's car wasn't there. "Strange, I thought Jake was home. Must have gone to the shop or something," Tom muttered to himself, a nervous habit he often reverted to when stressed. He spotted a guy near his car, looking like he was trying to find a place to smoke. Fumbling with his keys, Tom tried to remote unlock his car, struggling for a moment before he heard the 'blip blip' of it unlocking. He hurried into the driver's seat of his green Holden Cruze, pulled his seatbelt on, and started the engine, all in a near panic. He wasn't sure what was frightening him more; the feeling of impending doom that was causing him to flee, or not knowing why he was fleeing in the first place.

He exited the carpark in record time, and turned left onto the street. His green eyes darted left and right as he started driving away from his home, scanning his surroundings for anything that could explain his ominous feeling. He flicked the radio on, catching the last chords of some insipid pop song he hated. Thankfully the next song was better, and Tom started to sing the lyrics loud enough to not hear the booming sound of a distant explosion behind him. The song finished, and was followed by a few ads selling hair loss treatments and floor tiles. One of the DJs started to jabber on about their kids, before they segued to the news report.

"In breaking news, an apartment building in South Bank has exploded, killing at least 200 people and injuring hundreds more, in a bizarre chain of events that led to this horrible tragedy. At approximately 3:52 this afternoon an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in the neighbouring suburb of Milton, shaking the ground in suburbs within a 5 kilometre radius. Earthquakes are a rare occurrence in this part of the world and this one caused a significant amount of initial damage, but the consequences, it seemed, were far greater than some cracked windows and collapsed walls. The earthquake apparently forced the Riverview apartment building to move in its foundations slightly, which dislodged the gas pipes in the basement. Police say that somebody must have lit a cigarette close to the leak, causing the catastrophic blast. The explosion destroyed all 7 floors of the unit block, killing everyone inside. The -"

Tom turned the radio off abruptly, almost violently, as he did an illegal U turn and sped directly back to where he had been not 10 minutes ago. He pulled out his phone while manoeuvring through traffic, and pressed speed-dial to call Jake's number. Tom began to panic in earnest when it went straight to voicemail.

"Fuck, shit, fuck." Tom swore, struggling to remember whether Jake was home or not, "I hope he wasn't home, I didn't see him. His car wasn't in the carpark when I got there, was it? Fuck, why isn't he answering his -" he stopped rambling abruptly as his phone began to vibrate. The caller ID read 'Unknown', but Tom answered anyway, hoping it was Jake.

"Hello? Tommy? Are you ok? I just heard the news! I'm calling from a pay phone, coz I think I left mine in the flat.." Jake was the only person that can call Tom 'Tommy'. Not even his parents could call him that. He secretly hated it, but Tom had never been more grateful to hear his best mate's voice, having to swerve to avoid mounting the footpath.

"Jake! Thank fuck you're alright! I just left about 15 minutes ago, I'm heading back now to -"

"NO! Don't go back! I just came from there and it's swarming with guys in suits, they've blocked off the whole area. They pulled me up and asked if I knew you. I think they're Feds, I swear." Jake exclaimed, seeming far too excited considering the circumstances. Just as Tom was processing this information, he heard sirens and saw red and blue lights flashing in his rearview mirror. Daring a look, he saw that the lights were coming from a black SUV behind him, and he indicated in order to make way for it to overtake him. As he pulled up next to the sidewalk, the other vehicle pulled in behind him, and two officers dressed completely in black darted out of the front seats, heading directly for Tom. The only way to tell them apart was their eyes, one officer's being bright yellow, the other's an eerie blood red.

"Get out of the car and place your hands on your head! Move!"Officer Red-eyes screamed, approaching Tom's car from the driver's side. When he reached the car, he wrenched open the door and roughly dragged Tom's slim body onto the ground and proceeded to handcuff him.

Then, Officer Yellow-eyes started to speak, his voice much calmer and his demeanour less hostile. "You are being detained for questioning in regards to the incident that occurred today at the Riverview apartment building. Do exactly as you're told and this won't take long. Please accompany us to our vehicle so we can take you to the station."

To say the least, Tom was confused, and attempted to plead his innocence in causing the explosion, but it fell on deaf ears as he was thrown into the back of the SUV. He had to buckle his seatbelt quickly, because as soon as the officers were seated in the front, the car teared out of park and started speeding up the street, presumably in the direction of the police station.

After passing at least three stations at high speed, Tom began to doubt that he'd been arrested by any kind of traditional law enforcement agency. This, however, didn't seem to worry Tom, a strange calm washing over him as he contemplated the situation.

After driving for about half an hour, Red-eyes, who was sitting in the passengers seat, turned to Tom and growled, "Bet you wish you'd seen this coming too, don't ya?", sneering cruelly and chuckling. "Haha, I bet you thought you'd gotten lucky, dodged a bullet, but we know you cheated back there, and you're gonna wish you'd ignored that little gut feeling you got." Tom just smiled serenely at the man, eyes glazed over. Internally, Tom asked panicked questions, dozens constantly darting around in his mind ; 'How do they know about my visions? What are they going to do to me?' Who are these people and where are they taking me?' But on the outside he was the picture of calm and collected.

"Fuck Joe, are you Tranq-jinxing him? I want to see him cry, and he won't while you've got him hooked up"

"We don't know all of what he can do yet, we don't want him going nuclear before we get to HQ" Yellow-eyes replied, glancing back to see Tom sitting peacefully, seemingly oblivious to the conversation. "You can have your fun with him as soon as he's done in Processing."

Subconsciously, Tom was screaming, trying to claw his way out of the fog his mind was in, struggling to make sense of exactly what was happening. But, as he was inexperienced in defending against mind altering magic, he couldn't overcome the effects and continued to remain placid and docile.

Eventually they arrived at a long driveway leading to a large, ominous black gate that opened upon their approach. A huge grey manor loomed in front of them, outside of which the car stooped. Both officers got out of the car, and Red-eyes again ripped Tom from his seat and began marching him up to the Mahogany front door. Yellow-eyes -Joe - walked up from behind and knocked on the door twice. As the door seemingly opened by itself and Tom was pushed over the threshold, he was overcome with a strong feeling of 'wrong', and he felt a rush of energy burst from within himself. He heard the explosion, felt the flames, then felt nothing.

Within a moment, there was only darkness.
