Jason and Shaun - Chapter 8

Tom's and Adam's Visit

Jason's P.O.V.

Part 1

We were sitting in the bedroom after making love for the first time, when the phone rang. I wasn't going to answer it until I looked at the caller id and realized who was calling. It was Tom. Tom is my 23 year old brother. He's a great guy who is raising his son on his own. He had to drop out of school to get a job to help with the cost of having a baby. While working full time, he managed to get his GED. Now, he's preparing to be a phlebotomist in hopes of making more money. Sadly, his girlfriend died in a car accident just before he entered school. My parents have been overly helpful in helping him get his life back on track. No one could ask for a better brother. He openly accepts me and expects those around him to accept me as well. Enough about him, I should focus on the phone call I suppose.

"Hey Tom, what's up?"

"Nothing much little brother, I was hoping that Adam and me could come down for a little visit this weekend?"

Any chance to spend with my little nephew is worth it. I've haven't seen him for what feels like forever.

"Of course come over! Mom and dad have the address. If they can't find it call April, I know she has it."

"Cool, I should be down later today!"

"Alright, hey remind me to introduce you to my boyfriend."

"What was that you said?"

"Listen closely Tommy, I have a boyfriend that I want you to meet."

"Hmmm...properly translated, that means I have a boyfriend that I want your opinion on."

Like I need his okay to date Shaun? Not going to happen but it is going to be awesome to see him. When I hung up the phone, I turned to Shaun.

"Shaun, guess what?"

He looked at me kind of funny and then said:

"Ummm...Your brother is coming over to visit."

"Yeah! Isn't that awesome?"

"I suppose so. Do we have enough food in the house?"

"Not a bad idea, we might need to go shopping."

"Jason...where are you going to be sleeping when your brother and whoever Adam is comes to visit?"

"Shaun relax! Tom knows that I'm gay and he's fine with me being gay. He's smart enough to figure things out. Plus, he's kind of pervert just to warn you. And umm...Adam is my nephew."

"A kid?"

"Yupe"

He looked towards the bedroom and I know he was worried about what a kid in the apartment might mean. I kissed him softly on the cheek.

"Adam will be fine once he gets to know you. Now let's go

shopping!"

We headed off towards the grocery store. I want to make this visit special. It will be the first time that Tom and Adam will see Shaun. Tom won't care one way or another. Adam on the other hand can be a shy until he learns to trust someone. I really don't see it as a problem. My hunch is that Shaun will win him over just like he eventually won me over. We aren't talking much in the car which is typical.

When Shaun is driving, the car is quiet. You could hear a pin drop if it were not for the traffic around us. He says the noise tend to distract him. Even when he studies the room has to be quiet. He does a lot of studying when I'm asleep or at class. He's been known to sneak out to Miss White's apartment to read over a chapter or two. She doesn't care. Miss White is just thankful to have a visitor.

I've been writing up my grocery list during the ride to the store. I'm going to focus on Adam's likes and dislikes when it comes to food. For dinner I thought I would do hamburgers, corn on the cob, and oven fries and then for breakfast pancakes with cinnamon apple topping, hash browns, and bacon. Adam can be a bit picky when it comes to food. I'm not sure where he gets it because his dad will eat anything that doesn't eat him first. Shaun loves to go shopping with me.

Shaun loves to go shopping with me because of the way his mom shopped. I guess she kind of ran around in circles when she shopped. There is nothing like a organized person living with a disorganized person. I guess, she has gotten better but he dreaded it. I tend to make up my list based on the aisles in the store. The one and only thing about me that Shaun doesn't like is that I'm picky when it comes to the produce that I buy. It has to be blemish free. As we were leaving the story, Shaun saw a poster advertising kittens.

Shaun has a soft spot for animals. I don't think he would choose to keep a snake for a pet, but I still catch him talking to Lucy. If I've got her out of the tank, he'll ask me if it's alright to hold her. Quite frankly, I was a little bit surprised that someone other than me wanted to hold her. Anyway, back to the poster, His eyes grew a little bit as he stared at those Siamese kittens. He looked at me and spoke:

"Jason, I'm going to stop by the animal shelter."

Occasionally, he'll stop by to look at the animals and then he'll come home a be little depressed. I know there is a little boy in him that wants to take something home with him.

True to his word, Shaun stopped at the city's animal shelter. This trip was our first together since becoming a couple. The lady at the front desk seemed to recognize my boyfriend. She smiled as we approached.

"Here for your weekly visit?"

She said with a smile. Shaun smiled as he looked at her. If didn't know that he was truly gay, I might have been jeaslyius.

"Yeah Candy, hey I want you to meet my boyfriend. Jason!"

It's not every day that I get introduced by Shaun as his boyfriend. Somehow hearing him say that made me happy. She reached out her hand and I did the same.

"I'll be right with. I just need to grab my keys."

Candy opened the door to the cat room and let us walk in. I heard the door close behind us. By the sounds of the cats, they must all want his attention. Shaun looked across the room and his eyes became glued to a cage along the west wall. It contained one lone Siamese kitten. A note on the side of cage read:

"I am the last of my brothers and sisters to be adopted.

I am super friendly and need a good home. Currently I'm not named but I would love to go home with you."

When I finished reading the note, I looked over at my boyfriend. He had a finger poking through the wires of the cage. Two little paws were toying with his finger. A huge smile had ownership of my boyfriend's face. He was in 7th heaven. I think I owed it to him to get this little kittie for him.

"Shaun, I need to use restroom. I'll be right back."

I turned and exited the room. For Shaun, I'm going to go behind his back.

I'm going behind his back to get his kitten. Candy was still behind the desk which was good. She smiled as I approached. I suddenly felt this rush of pride come over me. This type of behavior is typical of me. I have a pretty good memory when stuff like this happens.

"Candy, I take it my boyfriend comes in here a lot?"

She looked through the window and smiled.

"Yeah he comes in about once a week. Every once in awhile he'll come in more than that but he always comes in stays

for a little while and then leaves. Everyone knows him.

We all love him; because he takes time to play with the animals but especially the kittens. I take it you want to ask me something. Wait...you're going to surprise him, huh?"

How did she know? Oh well, doesn't matter!

"Yeah, I want to get the kitten he's playing with right now. It's the lone Siamese kitten but I need to pick it up a little later. I want to surprise him with it so is there a way to put a hold on it or something?"

"We don't normally do that, but sure for Shaun, I don't mind doing it. He really deserves it. He went the longest time being sort of depressed and it's good to see

him come out of that."

I walked back into the cat room after Candy unlocked it for me. She even let me fill out all the papers and pay for the adoption. I walked into the room and my phone rang.

"Hello!"

"Jason, your brother and nephew are at your place. I let them in for you. I hope that was okay."

"Thanks Miss. White, I really appreciate you doing it. We are coming home. Be there shortly!"

I tapped Shaun on the shoulder and he looked towards me.

The look on his face told me that he didn't want to leave. Still, I knew he was listening to what was being said which is doesn't bother me anymore. I'm not sure why it doesn't but it doesn't. It's quite possible that I have just have grown to love him and have learned to ignore that part of him. We turned to leave and I noticed that he seemed a bit lost. I wonder what will happen when he sees the cat.

"Shaun, you must really like those little kitties?"

He kind of looked at me and just sort of half smiled.

"Jason, I'm not sure why I come here but it makes me feel good. You know, I come here and play with the animals. It's a good thing for both the animals and for me."

We pulled into the parking lot and unloaded the car. Shaun was nice enough to key us into the building. With our groceries in hand, we headed for the apartment.

We entered the apartment to find my brother and my nephew sitting in the living watching this silly purple dinosaur. By the way, I can't stand that people dinosaur. We went straight to work putting away the food. The whole time, I can hear my brother telling Adam, that he has to wait before he come say hi. As soon as our groceries were put away I heard Tom tell the little guy, that he could go see Uncle Jason now. The sound of two feet running to greet me came through loud and clear. Shaun and I both turned toward Adam.

"Uncle Jason!"

Adam screamed as he hugged me. His little arms wrapped around me. My arms scooped him up so we could see each other face to face.

Adam's smile left little doubt that this kid missed his uncle. Adam has a mess of great uncles but he has only one uncle; an uncle who spoils the heck out of his only nephew. I think even my sister manages to spoil her nephew. I looked at Shaun and thought how awesome it must be to have another nephew.

"Adam, I want you to meet Shaun. Shaun's my best friend!"

Adam looked at Shaun but he didn't exactly seem friendly toward him. Shaun smiled and waved at him. Adam just looked away. I could see Shan accepting the fact that Adam just was not going to smile at him. I on the other hand was not going to have my boyfriend ignored by the best little guy in the whole wide world. Tom is going to have to know the truth and then he can fix this little problem.

"Shaun can I talk to you, alone?"

"Sure just give me a second!"

He stood up and walked over to me. Tom looked right at Adam and started to talk.

"Hey, Uncle Jason and me need to talk so you sit here and play with your toy okay?"

"Okay Daddy!"

Tom and I disappeared behind my bedroom's door.

It might have been a bad idea to leave Adam and Shaun outside but I felt this conversation needed to talk place right now.

"Tom, I don't need to tell you that I'm gay, but I need to tell you that Shaun is gay too."

He smiled and said:

"I kind of figured that, and by the looks of this room, I'm guessing you don't sleep in here."

He again smiled as he scanned the room. I admit the room is pretty spotless expect for Lucy and her tank, my computer, and my plants. The rest of the place is spotless. I keep my bedroom clean but I'm not a neat freak.

"Tom, I don't sleep in here. I sleep with Shaun. I've fallen in love in with him."

Tom didn't smile. He didn't move. He looked me straight in the eyes and said:

"Jason, if you love Shaun, then I love Shaun."

I was touched. Tom accepted me but I didn't think he would accept Shaun so easily. Now, I need to address Adam.

Adam needs to know that he can trust Shaun. I can't let Shaun miss out on the love that Adam dishes out. Tom was ready to walk away from me. I reached out my hand to him and tapped him on the shoulder.

"So how do we tell Adam that Uncle Jason likes boys and that Shaun is his Uncle too?"

After I was done speaking, his face became very serious. He thought a few seconds and then looked at me. He sat down on the bed and put his hands over his eyes. I thought maybe he was crying but he wasn't. Tom was just extra deep in thought.

"Jason, I don't know how to tell him exactly, but I will. I'm not even sure that he's ready to know about you being gay, but you're right he needs to know that you and Shaun

are more than just friends."

Tom doesn't exactly get it. I want Adam to at least be friendly with Shaun. He's being a tad bit cold to my main man.

"Look Tom, I'd be happy if Adam just knew that it's okay. I'd love for him to trust Shaun."

Tom stood up without saying a word and just walked out of the room. When I got out of the room, Tom already had Adam on the couch and the movie was on pause.

Tom was ready to have the talk with Adam. Adam looked kind of upset at his dad for pausing the movie and he even gave me a grouchy little boy face. It was the kind of face that said "You did this, didn't you?" Shaun was getting a drink in the kitchen as I came up behind him. I took his hand and lead him to the couch. He didn't ask me anything about why we were going to the couch but he followed me anyway.

We were going to sit down on the couch but as we got to the couch Shaun started talking to Adam so instead we sat on the arm rests on either side of the couch.

"Adam, daddy needs to talk to you. I need to listen, okay?"

Adam looked a little scared. He just nodded as his eyes darted to the television and then at me and then at Shaun and back to Tom.

"A...Adam, Uncle Jason has a good friend. It's a little like mommy and daddy were good friends."

I saw Adam look at Shaun and me with great big eyes.

"Daddy, do they kiss like you and mommy use too?"

Tom looked a bit unsure of what to say exactly. He turned to me and then Shaun who nodded his head "Yes!" Tom's eyes went back to his son.

"They sure do little guy. Can I show you something?"

"Yes daddy!"

They got up off the couch and walked to our bedroom. He pointed inside and then whispered something into Adam's ears. Adam just giggled and then went back to his position on the couch.

"Uncle Jason?"

"Yeah sport?"

"Is he your bestest friend?"

Adam said pointing to Shaun. All Shaun could do was smile and when Shaun looked at me, I laughed.

"Yeah Adam, he is my best, best friend."

"What's his name?"

Tom looked his son.

"Why don't you ask him his name?"

Adam turned and looked at Shaun. Still a little shy when it came to Shaun, but he managed to ask his question.

"What's your name?"

"My name is Shaun."

"Are you my uncle?"

"Umm...."

Shaun looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. I wasn't exactly sure how to answer that question. I mean, we aren't married so it's not official or anything but yeah I would love to have Adam call Shaun uncle too.

"Yeah, he's your uncle too."

"Cool!"

Shaun instantly got a hug from Adam.

Time was moving fairly fast and I still needed to get down to the shelter before the shelter closed. Now, how to sneak out of the house?

"Adam, you want take a ride with me?"

"Yes I do!"

Adam has grown up in a home where he really didn't have interaction with other kids. He's mainly been around grownups so he's kind of use to talking like an adult. Don't get me wrong though, he is all kid. We managed to sneak out of the house and using Shaun's car we drove to the shelter. It didn't take too long to get there. I think Adam was expecting a little longer drive than this. I stopped the car and got out and then I opened up Adam's door and helped him out.

"Will you carry me?"

Oh man you have to be kidding me. He still likes being carried all over the place. I realize that I'm his uncle but no, I am not picking him up. When we leave, he'll want to be carried out and I'll have the kitten to bring home. We entered the shelter and I approached the desk. There was an older gentleman behind the desk. He smiled when he saw me and Adam.

"How can I help the two of you today?"

"Well, I'm here to pick up a kitten that Candy said she would hold for me. It's a little Siamese kitten."

"Oh...you must Shaun's boyfriend?"

"Yeah that's me!"

"Hold on, I'll bring him right out to you. It's $45.00 dollars. You can start writing up the check as I go back and get the kitten."

I did just that. By the time he got out, the check was written and I was more than ready to head home. Adam was staring at the kitten with a huge smile on his face.

"Can I play with the kitten?"

Adam asked reaching out to pet the kitten. The guy from the shelter put the kitten into a little box. Adam was waiting for me to answer his question.

"We can't play with the kitten till we get home."

He gave me his sad little eyes and than asked me again.

"Can I play with the kittie?"

I already told him that he had to wait till we got home.

"Adam, we have to wait till we get home so Uncle Shaun can see him."

He just accepted what I said and took my hand so we coujld leave to come home.

Adam was placed into the car and than into the car seat with the kitten. I told him to hang on to the box. I pulled out and headed home. The kitten was meowing and clawing a bit at the box. My plan is to surprise Shaun with the kitten. I think, I'll leave it with Miss White till I'm ready to give it to Shaun. We had to make one little stop to pick up a food dish, a water dish, and a bag of dry cat food. After our stop we headed back to the apartment.

We got into the building and I headed for Miss White's door. I had Adam knock on the door. I heard Miss White coming to the door.

"Hello?"

"It's Jason!"

She opened the door and saw me standing there with Adam and the kitten.

"Can we come in?"

"Jason get inside and who is this handsome kid?"

"This handsome young man is my nephew Adam. Miss White, I need a big favor."

She smiled as she looked at the box.

"I'll keep whatever is in the box until you come for it."

"I got Shaun a Siamese kitten. I'm planning on surprising him. I'm going to the apartmenty and grabbing Shaun. We'll be right back."

She smiled at me and took the box out of my hand. We walked out of the apartment and went home. I entered the apartment and walked straight up to Shaun.

"Shaun, we need to go Miss White's right now!"

His face changed and he looked panicked. I didn't want him to worry about Miss White, so I had better get him over to the her apartment quickly. When we got to her apartment, I found the door opened and the box sitting on her couch.

"Miss White, are you here?"

When I looked at the box, I found a note.

"Jason, I had to take the garbage out. I left the door open so you coudl get inside."

Shaun spyed on the box and seemed fixed on it.

"I think Miss White got a new cat."

I didn't say thing to him. I took the box into my hands.

I carefully opened the box and the kitten meowed at me. Shaun gazed into the box. He could hardly hold back. I thought I saw tears.

"Miss White adopted the kitten."

He was ready to walk out the door when I sat the box down. The kitten climbed out and headed for the door.

"Shaun grab the kitten!"

He reached down and scooped it up. It seemed to remember him from the shelter. The kitten was rubbing it's head against him.

"Shaun, the kitten isn't Miss White's. It's your cat."

He looked at me and smiled. He cuddled the cat in his arms and then looked at me.

"Jason thanks so much! I don't know what to say. I've wanted one for so long. Thanks so much!"

We went back to the apartment with the kitten in my arms. I could tell Shaun had fallen in love with the her.

"So what are going to name her?"

"I wanted to name give her an Oriental sounding name but I think that her name is going to be Sasha."

I headed for the kitchen and Shaun sat down on the floor and started to play with Sasha.

Dinner tonight is going to be hamburgers, oven fries, and corn on the cob. I was busy prepping dinner. Glancing over to Shaun, I saw him and Adam on the floor playing with Sasha. It was really neat to see Adam accepting Shaun. I knew that he would just thought it would take longer. I called everyone to dinner. Mostly, we made small talk but overall it's been a great visit. After dinner, I took Adam to the room holding Lucy and we spent sometime looking at her. Hmmm...maybe this is good time to ask Adam about Shaun.

"So what do you think about Uncle Shaun?"

He looked at me as he looked at Lucy.

"Uncle Shaun is awesome! Uncle Jason, I'm tired."
