Luke's Big Adventure

Chapter 25

Luke and Jake walked slowly down to the town and along the seafront to the café where they were due to meet their other two friends. As they walked Jake had spent quite a few minutes giving his opinion on the contrasting results of Jen and Martha and expressing the hope that he and Luke did not share the same fate. Once again, Luke could have raised the subject of his wish to postpone his university entry until the following year, but he failed to do so, partly because he felt that it was not the appropriate time to do so and partly because he was beginning to worry about how Jake would react. On the other hand, he realised that the longer he delayed the worse it could be and was just on the point of raising the matter when they turned the corner and saw Ahmad waving to them.

Hi guys', Ahmad shouted, I see you have the dreaded envelopes with you. There's no sign of Mike though, so I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.'

Luke laughed,

`Mike is never knowingly on time for anything. In all the years I've known him he has always been late.'

Who says I'm always late?', came a voice behind them as their friend appeared as if by magic, Well, ok, maybe half a minute but, for once it wasn't my fault. I couldn't download the message from school, and they were late sending it anyway. As we're all here now, let's get a table and start the "big reveal".'

Mike ushered his friends into the café and, as there were very few other customers, they were quickly served with their choice of coffee and then easily found a large table in a quiet corner. Once they had settled down, Mike, as was his habit, took the chair,

`I'd like to suggest that we read out our results in alphabetical order of first names.'

Ahmad gave a groan and, Luke put up a supportive counterargument,

`Of course, that's the right odea because it means you go last. Perhaps, we should do it in reverse alphabetical order.'

Jake sighed and said, rather nervously,

`Does it really matter? We are going to have to reveal our results at some stage, so let's just get on with it.'

Ahmad nodded and said,

`I agree. I'll be the first sacrificial lamb.'

He tore open the envelope and pulled out the single sheet of paper inside, looked at it for a moment, shook his head for a second and then read out what was printed on it,

`English Literature "A"; Drama "A*"; Spanish "A" and General Studies "B"'. I think that means that I can confirm my place at Birkbeck, and I'll be close to Jamie.'

The announcement was greeted with a low cheer from the other three, who got up from their seats and gave their friend a group hug. When they sat down, Jake followed Ahmad's example and tore open the envelope. The American's response to the results was to blink several times and look completely shocked. Luke reached out and gave his boyfriend's hand a gentle squeeze and then Jake took a deep breath and spoke,

`I really don't believe it but here goes. English Literature "A"; History "A"; Sociology "A"; and General Studies "C". I think that qualifies me to go to my first-choice university.'

Luke let out a slight cheer stood up and gave the teenager a big hug and whispered,

`I knew you'd fucking ace it. It's amazing and so well deserved.'

Luke was joined by the other two who were equally delighted by the American's results.

Mike looked at his oldest friend and said,

`Come on Luke it's your turn.'

The teenager opened his envelope more carefully than the previous two and withdrew the sheet with slightly shaking hands. He read his results and looked completely shell-shocked before speaking,

`English Literature "A*"; History "A*"; Philosophy "A*"; and General Studies "A". That means I've done well enough to get my first choice, like Jake.'

Jake grinned broadly and said,

`Awesome.'

Mike and Ahmad grinned broadly and pulled their friend into a tight hug. When they broke apart, Mike tool out his phone and opened the email with the results. As he was waiting for the message to load, he said,

`Well, after those three incredibly amazing results, I guess we now come to the bottom of the barrel.'

Jake and Luke both reacted with a noise indicating their disagreement with Mike's comment and Ahmad put their point into words,

`Don't put yourself down. I know you're smart and I'm sure you'll have done as well as we all have. Stop delaying and read out your results.

Mike shrugged and read from his screen in a dead-pan voice,

`Chemistry "A"; Physics "A"; Maths "A"; and General Studies "C". I may well be joining Ahmad in London if I get my place at Imperial College confirmed.'

Ahmad let out a whoop of joy and Luke exclaimed,

`Fantastic! We have a new Einstein amongst us. I always knew you weren't as stupid as you looked!'

Mike was engulfed by the others in a hug and had to struggle to emerge from their clutches.

The owner of the café had been observing the group for a while and came over to the table and said,

`Am I to assume that you have just had your A-Level exam results? It sounds like good news all round.'

Mike grinned and replied,

`Yes, we've all passed and done very well and soon we'll be off to university.'

Ahmad and Jake nodded enthusiastically as Mike spoke and he was the only one to notice that his oldest friend was rather more reticent in his response.

Jake stood up and announced that he thought he ought to go home to tell his parents his results and the others agreed that they, too, should leave and pass on the news of their success to their anxious parents. Before they left the café, the group agreed to meet again later in the day for more celebrations. Ahmad and Mike were first out of the door and Jake was also ready to leave but Luke said he needed the toilet and asked his boyfriend to wait for him. Jake nodded and went outside to stand in the street and called his parents with the news and received an enthusiastic response. He promised them that he would be home soon but was going to walk back with Luke who joined him a moment or two later. There was no sign of the other two friends, who had seemingly disappeared into thin air.

As they walked back towards their homes, Jake said,

`Are you OK? You were very quiet in there when we were celebrating our results.'

Luke sucked in a deep breath and began his reply,

`Jake, there's something I've been meaning to tell you, but I haven't found the right moment. The thing is I've decided I can't go to university later this year.'

The American teenager stopped dead in his tracks with a look of profound shock registering on his face, but it was quickly followed by an angry outburst,

`We were all elated and excited after our great results and you drop this bombshell on me. No warning, no discussion ... You ... YOU ... have decided you're not going. Did you consider what effect such a decision would have on me, your boyfriend? Obviously not, well, screw you, Luke.'

Without waiting for a response, Jake, tears running down his cheeks, began running at a pace that even if he had been fit, Luke would not have been able to match. Somewhat nonplussed by the outburst, Luke made his way home, limping slowly and none the wiser as to why Jake had reacted in the way he had. When he arrived home, he immediately told his parents his results and, in addition, revealed that he thought that he ought not to go to university in the autumn. In explaining his decision Luke told his parents that it was based on the experience of the holiday which had demonstrated that he was not yet fit enough for university life and the recent hospital visit. He added that he was sure that if he concentrated on improving his strength and fitness, he was confident that he would be able to cope the following year. Unlike Jake, Robert and Molly looked relieved at hearing what Luke had to say and offered him their full support, although, like the American, they did say they wished Luke had discussed the matter with them before making his final decision. In response to his mother's questioning look, Luke told her that Jake had not taken the news very well and had stormed off before adding,

`I think I had better call him and try to clear the air.'

Molly nodded and said,

`Yes, I think you should.'

Luke retired to his room to make the call, but his several attempts went unanswered.

Meanwhile, Jake had reached the corner of his road and was still visibly upset. Mike had been home for some time having been given a lift by Ahmad's uncle, who had been sent to bring him back to his parents. After Ahmad had left and he had told his parents the results, Mike had time to call Sam with his news and received a second round of enthusiastic congratulations. He was still in his room when he noticed Jake and saw at once that was in some distress. Mike went out straight away and called to his fellow teenager,

`Hey, Jake, what the fuck is the matter?'

The American teen stopped dead in his tracks and, as soon as Mike was close enough, he collapsed into the British teen's arms mumbling between sniffs and tears,

`How could he? How could he? I don't understand?'

Puzzled, Mike could only ask simply,

`Who? What?'

`Luke', groaned Jake.

`Let's go to our den in the little wood. We haven't used it in a while but it's quiet and you can tell me what had happened.'

Mike led the American slowly into the little wooded area and settled him down in the sheltered area that they had used as a den in the past. Finally, Jake stopped snivelling and told Mike what had happened and how Luke had sprung the decision on him without warning. The American was upset not only by the decision but also the fact that his boyfriend had chosen not to either warn or discuss it before making his announcement.

Mike reached out and gave his friend a hug and then replied,

`I'm sorry. Luke can be a stupid fuck sometimes and this is one of those times. I've known him for years and, like you, I love him and admire all his good qualities, but he can be secretive and insensitive. Of course, he should have talked to you before he made his final decision, but sometimes, for all his intelligence, he doesn't think. Knowing him and the fact that he saw how upset you were, I'm sure that he is desperately sorry. I'd hazard a bet that he has been trying to call you and apologise and explain.'

Jake nodded and gave a weak smile,

`Eight missed calls'

`He really is sorry if he's called you that many times.'

`Yeah, but I'm still upset, and I don't want to talk to him, not just yet anyway.'

`I understand, Jake, I'm not surprised, I've been in your position more than once in the past, but we always make up afterwards.'

`Sure, Mike, but you're not his boyfriend.'

`True, Jake, but not for want of trying', Mike replied, sighing deeply.

The pair sat in silence for several more minutes and then Jake announced that he was feeling much happier and was ready to go home to see his parents. They walked back down the hill together and parted company at Jake's garden gate. Mike walked over towards his house and, once he was sure that Jake had gone inside, continued walking towards Luke's house. When he arrived there, Luke's parents opened the door and congratulated their son's oldest friend on his exam success and, in answer to his questioning look, indicated that Luke was in his room. Thanking them, Mike made his way to the room and barged in without knocking.

Mike closed the door firmly and then, ignoring his best friend's look of surprise as he lay in the foetal position on his bed, said,

Luke, what the fuck are you playing at? I've just seen Jake and he's in pieces. How could you spring it on him like that? I've known you all my life and I know all your good qualities, but I've also seen the other side of you, the selfish, inconsiderate, and insensitive side. We didn't nickname you Fish' for just your swimming, but because sometimes you can be cold and indifferent. Fuck, Luke, he loves you and you love him but you still you acted in the way you did. You really can be a complete shit sometimes, can't you?'

Luke had sat up listening intently to the admonition from his best friend and, when it seemed Mike had finished, he responded equally vigorously,

`It is precisely because I love Jake that I decided not to go to university with him later this year. The holiday brought it home to me very directly. I know that you -- it had to be you, Mike -- organised things so that there was always one of my friends keeping an eye on me; that you organised the long-distance travelling to minimise the strain on me and that you stopped anyone from moaning about me holding everyone back and stopping them doing everything they wanted. I am grateful for what you did. However, from my side, I came to realise, albeit very reluctantly that I was not well enough to go to university. If I went with Jake, he'd feel obliged to look after me and that would hold him back not only in terms of his studying but also in his social life. I would still visit him every time I could.'

Mike's attitude had slowly softened, and he nodded that he understood,

`But why didn't you tell Jake all this before springing your decision on him like you did?'

`I know, Mike, I know. I should have but I didn't make up my mind until after I'd been to the hospital a few days ago. The doctor said that he hoped I might improve if I concentrated on my training and physiotherapy. I could have done that while at university but there's more to tell you. Before we went on holiday and during it, I was having severe pains in the area that is paralysed. According to the doctor, it might be a sign of my body beginning to recover or it might just be a phantom pain. Nobody knows but either way in a year's time, I expect we will, and I could then go to university and join Jake who'll be able to show me the ropes. I've tried calling Jake to try to explain everything but he's not answering.'

Mike let out a loud sigh and sat down on the bed next to his best friend,

`Fuck, Luke, it's a good thing I love you because you can be hard work, you do know that don't you?'

Luke smiled weakly as his best friend gave him a hug and said,

`I think I understand how hard the decision was for you. I'll go in a minute and see if I can talk to Jake and get him to answer you call. Better give me a good hour.'

Luke looked happier than he had been when Mike arrived and said,

`Thanks, you are the best friend anyone could have. Tell Jake I'm sorry and want to have a chance to explain.'

Mike nodded, got up and walked towards the door leaving his friend lying on the bed.

Meanwhile, Jake had finally gone home after his talk with Mike and had been greeted with hearty-felt congratulations from his parents. The American teenager's mom saw immediately that something was wrong and, in response to her question, Jake burst into floods of tears as he told his parents about Luke's bombshell. Scott and Kate hugged their son and tried to comfort him, which they managed to do successfully. Scott said quietly.

`He certainly could have told you in a better way, but I'm not surprised by his decision. He's not that well and I'm sure he's been conflicted over what to do. For sure, he should have discussed it with you beforehand, but I don't think he meant to hurt you by doing what he did.'

`Thanks, dad. I do understand why he made the decision, but the other thing is where it leaves me. Should I go as we planned this year or wait, and we go together next year? What do you think?'

`Really, that's a decision only you can make. If it makes any difference, I've just had a promotion at work and so we'll be here in the UK for at least another five years. If you decided to postpone to next year, I can easily find you a job that will give you some extra money and allow you to visit your cousins back home in America. But, as I say, your mom and I think the decision is up to you and whatever you decide we'll support you all the way.'

Jake once again thanked his parents and gave them a big hug.

`So, what do I do next?'

Kate replied,

`First of all, take your time, you have a window before you need to accept your place, so no need to make a hasty decision. Second, make up with Luke, who I'm sure is hurting as much as you are. He's been foolish but I don't think he wanted to be malicious.'

`Thanks, mom. I know he wasn't being malicious just insensitive. I think I might make him sweat a bit longer before I answer his calls.'

Further conversation was interrupted by the doorbell. Mike was outside and he was immediately invited in, congratulated on his results, and directed to the den where Jake was sitting on the sofa. The British teenager slumped down next to the American and said quietly,

`I've seen Luke, he is distraught about everything as you are. He's desperate to make up and he knows he's made a gigantic error and is unbelievably sorry for his behaviour. I gave him a piece of my mind but, to be fair, what he told me in reply did make me see his decision in a different light, but he needs to explain himself it's not my place to tell you.'

Jake grinned for the first time in a while,

`Thanks, Mike. I've already decided to forgive him, but I think I'll leave him hanging on for a little while longer. I'd like your advice on what I should do about postponing as well.'

`He says he didn't want to stop you going this year, but he would be pleased as punch if you decided to wait. Don't tell him I told you that but I'm sure it's true. He's not a schemer and I know he didn't want to force you to postpone going to university and he'll support you whatever decision you make. Above all, however, I'm sure he'll want you to decide for yourself.'

At that moment, Jake's phone rang, and he looked at the dial, showed it to Mike, shook his head and allowed it to ring out. With a slight laugh, the American said,

`I think Luke can wait a bit longer, don't you?'

Mike nodded in agreement but then said,

`I understand, but please call him before the end of the day.'

`Don't worry, I will.'

After Mike had left, Jake told his parents that he was going to sleep on his decision over delaying his university place to the following year but would not delay it beyond then.

At Luke's house, the celebratory meal had turned into a rather sullen affair. Molly tried to keep up an air of enjoyment, but Luke's morose expression proved to win out over her efforts. The teenager kept looking at his phone all through the meal willing it to ring or at least for there to be a message from Jake. The only call he had received had been from Ahmad who had sounded sympathetic to his decision, although, like Mike, he was upset at the way Luke had handled the whole matter. As the evening wore on, Luke became increasingly depressed and fully aware that by his thoughtlessness he had ruined what should have been a day of celebration not only for himself but for his best friends as well. Just as he was beginning to think that he would never hear from Jake, his phone rang and on seeing the caller id Luke's spirits rose. After he had answered the call with a bright and cheerful `Hi', he was shocked to hear Jake's voice was quite solemn as he spoke,

`I understand that you have been trying to contact me, I hope it is to apologise for the hurt that you have caused me and to ask for my forgiveness...'

At this point it became obvious that the American could not keep up his pretence and he started to giggle, but Luke decided to play along with the joke.

`Yes, Jake, I do want to apologise and to thank you for calling back. I am truly sorry for all the hurt and upset I have caused and would have quite understood if you never wanted to see or speak to me again, but, hold on a minute, you are speaking to me again.'

This time it was Luke that began to giggle and then added,

`Do I take it that I am forgiven and that you still love me?'

`Of course I do you twat, but don't ever do anything like that again because if you do, I won't find it as easy to forgive. I also want you to know that I have not yet decided what I want to do about this year. I've been offered the chance to work for my dad's company for a year and make some bucks, but I'm still thinking about it. I told dad I'd decide by tomorrow and maybe, just maybe, I'll tell you then as well.'

`Please don't delay university on my account. I never wanted you to do that, but it would be great if you decided you wanted to do so. You are so lovable and I'm so lucky to have a boyfriend like you.'

`Yes, you really are! I love you!'

`I love you more!'

`Not possible. Goodnight, Luke.'

Jake ended the call and Luke lay back on his bed feeling happier than he had done for most of the day. The British resolved to act more responsibly and with more thoughtfulness in the future. Then, exhausted by the trauma of the day's events, he drifted off to sleep, still fully clothed.

Somewhat surprisingly given the events of the previous day, Luke slept well, although he woke at quite an early hour. Realising he was still wearing the previous day's clothes, he quickly stripped off, showered, and put on fresh clothes. When he emerged from his room, he found that Molly was already up and preparing breakfast. Luke offered his mum a sheepish grin and she gave him a brief hug and said,

`So, have you and Jake made up?'

`I think so, mum. We spoke last night and he's deciding today what he wants to do about going to university this year.'

`Does he have a choice?'

`Yes, his dad's said he can get him a paid job if he doesn't go until next year. Apparently, Scott's been promoted, and the family will be here for at least another five years or so which means Jake would finish before then whether he goes this year or next. Anyway, I told him he must do what is best for him and he promised to tell me as soon as he's made his mind up.'

`That sounds all very positive, I bet you're hoping he'll wait until next year.'

`Of course, but whatever he decides I'll give him my total support.'

While he was speaking, Luke had kept checking his phone but, although Jake was another early riser, there was no message.

`Come on, sweetheart, eat some breakfast while you're waiting. I'll call your father to tell him breakfast is on the table. He's off to Manchester today so he needs a good breakfast especially as he probably won't have time to eat again until he gets back late tonight.'

Luke took some toast and poured himself a cup of tea but kept distracting himself by looking at his phone. He chatted with his dad for a few minutes, but Robert was in a hurry and swiftly downed his breakfast and then gave his wife and son a quick hug and made a dash for his car.

A few seconds later, there was a sharp ring on the doorbell and Molly got up to answer it,

`I expect that's your father back having forgotten something, he usually does.'

Molly was wrong because waiting outside was Jake wearing a huge grin.

`Oh! Jake it's you! Congratulations on your exam results, they were wonderful.'

`Good morning, Mrs Townsend. Thank you, I couldn't have done it without Luke. Is he up?'

`Yes, he's in the kitchen.'

`Has he told you about our conversation last night?'

`Yes. He's been like a cat on hot bricks waiting to hear from you.'

`Well, I'm here to tell him what I've decided.'

`Don't let me keep him waiting. I'll see you both later.'

Jake walked to the kitchen and caught Luke looking wistfully out of the window. The American teenager approached stealthily and planted a kiss on the top of his boyfriend's head. Luke jumped and turned round, and his face broke into a huge grin when he saw who it was and asked,

`Have you decided? Once again, I can't say how sorry I am for the way I treated you yesterday, I behaved appallingly, and I unreservedly apologise.'

Jake nodded in acknowledgement of the apology, but wanted to prolong the suspense, so he said,

`Thanks, I accept your apology. Now, shall we go to your room? We can have a quieter discussion there.'

Luke nodded and led the way to his room, calling out to his mum that he and Jake were going there for a chat. Molly called back wishing her son good luck and the pair disappeared into Luke's room. Luke looked at his boyfriend anxiously as he sat on the bed with Jake next to him, but the American did not seem to be in all that much of a hurry. Finally, he spoke,

`After we talked last night, I had another long talk with my mom and dad, and they said that I was old enough to know my own mind. I got up early again this morning and still hadn't finally decided, so I ran my arguments past my parents again and told them what I thought was the best option. They said that they did not want to interfere but would happily support any conclusion I made. I went back to my room and had another long think and finally reached a decision.'

Jake paused for a moment and Luke looked anxiously in his direction, willing his boyfriend to tell him what he had decided. Jake seemed to be enjoying the agony he was putting Luke through, but finally he began speaking again,

`Weighing everything up I've decided ...'

Luke looked pleadingly at the teenage American, who smiled at him and said,

`I've decided to postpone going to university until next year. I'm taking a job at dad's company and, as he pointed out, with the results we both got we could make new applications. How do you feel about going to somewhere like LSE or King's College in London? If we went there, we'd be near Mike, Ahmad, and Jamie. Hell, we might all find somewhere to live in together and Sam could visit every weekend. What do you think?'

Luke had hardly taken in much of what Jake had said after he had announced that he was postponing his university entry. He realised that he was supposed to respond when his boyfriend stopped speaking and looked at him expectantly.

`Well, I'm delighted about your decision, but I hope it was made because you wanted it rather out of any other reason. As to the rest of what you said, there's a lot to take in. I think we should start by letting our current university know that we are postponing entry before we consider re-applying to somewhere else. Let's have talk about it and deal with everything in a logical manner, but not until after I've shown you how much I love you and appreciate the decision you've made.'

Luke pulled Jake into a tight hug and kissed him on the lips, pushing his tongue into the other teen's mouth. Jake responded in a similar fashion and a tongue battle took place before Luke eventually prevailed. The boys collapsed onto the bed and started to undress each other. Although Luke's body was hampered by the effects of his illness, he still managed to unzip Jake's jeans and manoeuvre himself so that he could take his cockhead between his lips. The horny American gave up all resistance and allowed his lover to slide his jeans and underwear down beyond his knees which gave the British boy full access to the rapidly hardening shaft of Jake's cock. As Luke skilfully used his mouth on his boyfriend's prick, the horny American managed to remove first his own shirt and then that of the British teenager before unzipping Luke's jeans and pulling them off exposing the teenager's rock-hard cock. There was a slight pause as the two boys shed the remainder of their clothing and moved more comfortably onto the centre of the bed.

Luke found himself lying on his back with Jake kneeling directly over him and the cut cock head was directly in line with the British teen's mouth. Needing no further invitation, Luke moved so that he could take his boyfriend's dick straight into his mouth and throat and felt Jake's lips wrap around his own throbbing cock. The oral sex continued for several minutes before Jake pulled his dick out of Luke's mouth and changed position so that he could lower himself onto his lover's rock-hard prick. Reaching out and, having applied lube all over his hole and Luke's shaft, guided the throbbing dick into position and then sat down so that he was full impaled by his boyfriend. Luke reached out and took hold of the American's cock which was slippery with pre-cum and began to wank him off. As Jake bucked up and down and Luke pushed up as best he could to meet the downward thrusts, a steady rhythm was established. Luke could feel that his orgasm was approaching, and Jake recognised the signs. The randy American teenager increased the speed of his cock riding and tightened his grip on the pulsating shaft in his hole. With a loud gasp, Luke unleashed his ball juice in powerful spurts deep inside Jake's love hole. As his partner began to soften and slip out of him, Jake scooted up Luke's chest and pointed his dick at his boyfriend's face and brought himself to his climax, wanking his shaft vigorously. The spunk flew out of Jake's piss slit and splattered all over Luke's face hitting him in the yes, on the nose and finally on the lips. Exhausted, the American teen collapsed onto the bed beside Luke and the two teenagers lay side-by-side as they quietly regained control of their breathing. When they were sufficiently recovered, Luke gazed lovingly at Jake and said,

`Thank you. I love you and I want you to know I've learnt my lesson and I love you so, so much!!'

`And I love you even more than that! However, now that forgiveness and thanksgiving is over, perhaps we should discuss the other things I said before I was so wonderfully interrupted.'

Luke nodded his agreement and then, when they were ready, the pair went to have a shower and get dressed.

To be continued.
