Magicks of the Mind Chapter 2 - Chance Encounter I spent the rest of the day busying myself in homework, and computer games; trying to forget the previous events of the day. I watched a few movies after midnight trying to stay awake, but at 4am I fell asleep. When I awoke it was 8am. "Wow!" I thought to myself. "No nightmares!" I decided it would be best to go to the doctors anyways, so I got ready and arrived at the university health clinic at 9:30. The university health clinic is not like a normal public health clinic. It is like a small hospital, equipped with everything which may be needed to deal with almost any problem save a major disaster, such as an explosion of a building. Once inside, I signed in, and sat down. After a few minutes I thought I saw the man from the park staring at me from outside the window, but when I looked up to get a better view of him, he was gone. A few moments later, I was called back. They had me do all the usual checkup things such as get on the scales, took my temperature and checked my blood pressure. "So why are you here today Mr. Xela?" The woman taking my vitals asked, having a hard time with my name. "It's pronounced Zell. I am here today because I've been having re-occurring nightmares that seem very real. I also feel like I've been seeing and smelling things that don't exist." I stated, wondering if she was going to think I was joking. "I see." She said skeptically. "How much sleep do you get each night?" "About 4 hours. If I get anymore than that the nightmare wakes me up." I said. "Ah. And before you started having these dreams?" she asked "About the same. I haven't gotten much sleep in some time now." "Do you feel very stressed about the upcoming finals?" she asked prodding me more. "Not very." I said truthfully. "I see." She said thinking. "Well, if you will follow me, the doctor will be with you shortly." "Alright." I said, following her out the door. She took me to a room on the interior of the building. There were no windows in this room, which is odd, since most the other rooms had a window to let light in. After waiting about 15 minutes I was getting anxious, wondering if coming to the doctor about feeling crazy was the best thing to do. I wasn't really crazy... was I? Just as I was about to open the door to leave, the doctor came in. "Ahh yes Mr. Xela" He said, pronouncing my name correctly. "I'm Doctor Hodges, and I'll be helping you today. What seems to be the problem?" I explained to him my nightmares and a few of the other aspects of seeing and haring things that may not have been there, leaving the details out about a man talking to me. "I see..." He said, deep in thought. "Do you have a history of mental illnesses in your family?" "I don't believe so." I said truthfully. "I don't really know much of my family that well though sir, my parents never talked much about it. I think it's a very sensitive topic for them." "Yes..." He said, not sounding too convinced. "You just seem a bit stressed out, Ben. So I think what I'm going to do is give you a very mild nerve pill that you should take about an hour before you go to bed. It will help you rest and be more calm." "Ok." I said, hoping something could keep me from waking up so terribly each night. "Ok son. I'd like to see you back in here in about 3 weeks. I'd like to see how everything turns out. If you keep having problems after a week, call." He said, while handing me his card, with his work number on it. "Alright" I said standing. I left fairly unhappy since the doctors visit didn't go as well as I had planned. Flynn Falls is a small town about 50 minutes from the coastal town of Williamsburg. Williamsburg is about the third largest city in the state, and although it is not huge, it does have a fairly large gay population, and several gay clubs and bars. I decided that I would go to Williamsburg to clear my mind and maybe find someone to hang out with for a while, to get away from my problems. I bummed the day away, eating, playing games and watching TV. Before I knew it, it was 9:30 pm. I hopped in my 2001 Eclipse and drove to Williamsburg. On the way, I was in my own little world, thinking about hot boys, games online, and even a little about school. Before I knew it, I was downtown searching for a parking place. It took me about 30 minutes to find a parking place in Saturday night traffic. The town turns into a zoo in the club district every weekend. I found a spot, got out of my car, and walked towards the club I was planning on going to. Once I got inside and paid, I made my way down stairs to the bottom level, which is more the mingling level. The second is for dancing to techno, and the third is used for drag shows. The bottom has a smaller dance floor for `dance' music. Once downstairs I saw one of my friends from the town who I hang out with sometimes and went over to talk to him. "Hey Josh!" I said to him. "Hey Ben! How are you?" He asked "I'm pretty good I guess. I'm still alive." I smiled back at him. "How about yourself?" "About the same I guess." He replied. "What you lookin' for tonight?" He grinned at me. "Maybe I'll get lucky tonight... ya never know!" I smiled at him. "Yeah. You sure are lookin good tonight. There's no doubt you'll get someone to leave with!" A few of his other friends came up and started talking to him so I kind of backed away. Josh was very cute, but he was never interested in me. After dancing for a bit and managing to get the bartender to slip me a few drinks when the rent-a-cops weren't looking, I saw a cute boy walk in. The moment he came inside we locked eyes. He walked right up to me, still staring into my eyes and spoke. "Aren't you just a little young to be drinking?" He asked with a grin. I grinned back at him. "Maybe just a tad... Want some?" He shook his head no and kept speaking. "My name's Derrick." "Cool." I said. "I'm Ben. Where you from Derrick? I'm from Flynn Falls." "I'm from here. I go to a small college here in town; have an apartment a few blocks from here." I saw a mischievous grin cross his face. "You go to school at Flynn Falls?" "Yeah. I'd never be there otherwise. That place is horribly boring. I think it was part of the plan!" I said honestly. "I know what you mean. I dated a guy from there once. He almost went nuts." When he said that I thought to myself `I am nuts!' I must have been thinking to myself longer than I realized because he was looking at me strangely. When I noticed this he spoke again "Wanna dance?" I grinned back at him and we went to the dance floor. For 30 minutes we bumped, grinded, grabbed and made out all while attempting to dance. I was surprised that after all this time of going to the club then leaving alone that I had found someone for once. Well, he found me more really, because I would have never approached him. By mutual unspoken agreement, we both walked off the dance floor dripping sweat and muscles aching. "Wow. That's the most fun I've EVER had at this place" I spoke first. "Me too! You were great." He said smiling that beautiful smile. I looked him over this time, very meticulously. He was about 5'9, 140 lbs, slim with decent muscle tone, short black hair, clean shaven, and a smile to die for. He noticed my staring and took me into his arms making me feel so very comfortable. While in his embrace I took a moment to inhale his intoxicating scent. A mix between cologne and sweat made a smell that I can only describe as Derrick. "So what are you interested in from me?" He asked, after releasing me. "Well, I'm really looking for more of a relationship. However, if you aren't ok with that, I could settle with just friends or whatever. I'm not beyond a hookup with someone so... rare." I said humbly. He looked at me quizzically, as if contemplating something, for a split second then spoke again. "I'm not that special. However, just to let you know I am interested in something more long term." He spoke, stressing the word `more' for some reason. We exchanged contact information and put it into each others cell phones and then he spoke again. "Hey, this place is getting boring; you wanna come back to my place and hang out for a while. We don't have to do anything. Actually I'd prefer if we didn't have sex, since it is easier to make a relationship work if you don't have sex first thing." "I feel the same way about sex first thing." I said. "Lets go, we can watch a movie and cuddle or something." We walked 3 blocks and arrived directly in front of my car. I was just about to feel dejected, when he said "Come on, right up here." He walked up to the door across the sidewalk from my car and unlocked it and opened it for me, allowing me inside. "Thanks." I said; still feeling the strangeness of the coincidence of my car being right in front of his apartment. We went up the stairs to his bedroom and I realized his `apartment' was really a townhouse that he lived at alone. "You must have a decent job to live in this big place alone." In truth, he had to be rich, the townhouse had 4 bedrooms and 3 baths. "I do pretty good on my own." Was all he said. He motioned me towards the bed and I laid down on it, facing the roof. A few seconds later he laid down on top of me and we started making out and gently humping against each other. After about 15 minutes of this we had to come up for air. "Mmmmm" I moaned. "I could definitely get used to doing this for a long long time. "Yeah, it's definitely enjoyable." He agreed. He turned the TV on and walked over to the entertainment center. "What movie you want to watch?" He asked. "I don't know." I said. "What do you have?" "Lets see... we have the aliens attacking and the little scarry girl with Tom Cruise. Then we have..." I interrupted him "I'll watch that one. I haven't seen it yet and want to." He smiled back at me. "I haven't seen it yet either. Been saving it for a time like this." He popped it into the DVD player and started it. At this point it was about 2 AM and he asked. "You gona stay the night?" I noticed the time then said "I guess so." I shucked my clothes all except for my boxers and crawled under the covers. He did the same and snuggled up next to me while facing the TV. We were pretty quiet except for the occasional kiss, purr, or contented sigh. By the time the movie was over, his comforting arms and rhythmic heartbeat had brought me to the brink of sleep. I laid down on my back, and he laid down on his stomach and he spoke. "Goodnight babe." "Gnight." I mumbled dozing off, completely forgetting the medicine I was supposed to take before bed. I woke up with the sound of someone or something busting down the door. Smashing it's way through I recognized the creature from my last dream, during the day. I tried to wake Derrick but he wouldn't budge. The creature just grinned at me, and pulled a jagged dagger from it's belt. Just as I was about to jump up and run something grabbed me from behind. It was another creature that looked the exact same. I could feel his breath on my neck, his drool running down my back. The first creature spoke "You will now watch the one you care about DIE at my hands, just as you will. There will be no escape this time!" Just as he was about to stab Derrick in the heart, he awoke and pulled a gun from under his pillow, and shot the creature 5 times. The creature screamed in agony and then the next second I jumped up out of the bed screaming, trying to catch my breath. My screams woke Derrick, he jumped, looked around, then noticed me. "What's wrong Ben? What's going on?" The clock read 8 AM. Exactly 4 hours since I went to sleep. I started freaking out. They were going to kill him. I couldn't see him dead. I didn't want to see him dead. I started getting dressed silently, Derrick noticed this and did as well. He came over to me and tried to take me into his arms but I shook him off. "What's going on Ben!?" He pleaded. "I have to go." I said, leaving the room. I ran down the stairs out the front door and jumped into my car. Just as I was closing my door I heard him say "But Ben! I stopped ..." I pulled away and didn't look back. I grabbed my cell phone and called my mom. It took about 6 rings for them to answer, and she sounded like she was asleep. "Hello?" She asked. "Hey mom, its me." I spoke. "Hey babe. Do you know what time it is?" She sounded irritated. "Yes mom I do. But... I'm going crazy mom." I said, starting to cry. "What do you mean you're going crazy?" She asked, sounding concerned now. "I've been having these dreams; terrible dreams. They won't go away. And sometimes they seem so real and afterwards... things happen... things that weren't there before the dream." "Uh... Like what?" She asked. `Oh great' I thought. `Now she thinks I'm nuts.' I decided to tell her anyways. "After one dream where there was a fire, my clothes smelt like smoke. I wasn't the only person to smell it..." I said. "And... and just now. There wasn't a gun... and one was there... after my dream." "A gun!? Where!?" She said sounding more worried about that than anything else. "It's not important mom." I said not wanting to explain to her where I had been. "Yes I suppose you're right." She said caringly. "Honey... There's some things your father and I haven't told you. We need to talk. We'll see you in a few hours at your dorm." `Great I thought. She's gona tell me theres a family history of insanity. SHIT' I thought. "Alright mom. I'll see you soon." I hung up the phone, and continued my drive back to my dorm.
