Chapter 1: Accepted

Cian

I was getting ready for bed as I had an exhausting day. My head was filled with random thoughts and I was feeling excited, hopeful and cared at the same time. I had applied for a teaching job in America and was waiting on the reply from the principle. Just as I pulled my boxers up after showering, I heard the beep and the voice signaling that I had an email. My heart started beating faster and I was shaking. I hoped to whatever god there was that that was the reply and that it was going to be good news. I rushed over to the computer in nothing but my boxers and clicked on the inbox icon. My face broke out into a huge grin as I saw that it was indeed from Mr. Newton, the principle. I waited in anticipation for the message to load and almost shouted out loud as I read the first word: `congratulations'.

I was literally bouncing in my seat. I turned the computer off and went to bed. In two days time I would be leaving for San Diego, California, and I was looking forward to it.

Although I'm only seventeen years old, I am a qualified chef and specialize in hospitality. In South Africa, a student has the option to go to college after the ninth grade, although many advanced courses require a student to have finished twelfth grade. Luckily food was my passion and I had the opportunity to study it for three years, while finishing the remaining three years of high school at the same time. So when I finished, I was sixteen and that was last year. I would be teaching a new subject being introduced in high schools in America; it would be replacing home economics. I would be teaching fifteen to seventeen year olds Hospitality 101 and I was a bit anxious as to what they would think when they find out that another kid would be teaching them. I only hope it's good. I drifted off to sleep with happy thoughts and sweet dreams, dreams that I might find someone to love me (not necessarily a girl).

Chapter 2: Goodbyes and Hellos

I stood at the terminal of Cape Town International Airport with my family. Unfortunately we couldn't afford for all of us to move, and I wouldn't have my own place for at least a month. I would be staying with a couple and their daughter. They had offered to have me stay with them temporarily, until I could afford my own place.

My mom came over and hugged me tightly, "You be good Cian (pronounced Kian), and phone regularly. As soon as Julian comes from Argentina, we'll make arrangements to move too."

Julian was my mother's boyfriend before she met my dad. When my dad died two years ago, they got back in touch. If he didn't have to go back to Argentina back then, I'm sure they would have been married today.

"I love you mama, and I will phone," I told her a little teary eyed.

I wanted my mum to be happy, it's just that I was disappointed that I didn't get to meet Julian yet, I probably would in the future.

"Cian, don't forget me," my little brother Jimmy sniffled.

"Of course I won't Jimmy!" I reassured him.

"En moet nie kattekwaad aan vang nie," my aunt Roslyn told me in Afrikaans. I definitely would not catch up to any nonsense and I told her so.

They announced that the flight to San Diego International Airport was boarding and I had to say goodbye. I boarded the airplane for the long flight and looked forward to a happy future. I would also be catching up on chapters of Dean's Dream on the mobile internet. It was the story I was following at the moment about a teenage gay boy struggling with betrayal and divorcing parents as well as high school crushes.

Dean

I didn't know what to do with myself. I was angry and sad and lonely all at the same time. School would be starting in two days time and I wasn't looking forward to it. Josh had betrayed me and was more interested a girl that I was stupid enough to date, my parents were divorcing and I felt as though I was the cause of it, and I have a stupid crush on the most gorgeous boy in the school, Johnny Chase. How pathetic could I get? I went to the kitchen and got a can of soda and then went to sit on the swinging bench on the porch. Luckily for me it was a nice day, my parents were out and I had the house to myself for a few hours.

I watched as old Mrs. Cullen walked past, pulling her trolley of groceries behind her. She waved and I smiled at her. She was a sweet lady and always used to give me candy when I was little. I could hear the Bernstein's dog Gopher barking up a storm a few houses down. I sat outside for a while, enjoying the warmth of the sun and watching the passerby's, thinking about stuff. A taxi cab pulled up across the road at the Tennyson's house. I saw a boy getting out. My heart started beating faster as I gazed at him. He looked about five feet and nine inches tall. He had long extremely curly dark brown hair. He looked like an Italian or Hispanic and his skin was golden brown and shining in the sun. He motioned for the driver to get out of the car to help him with his bags. The driver got out and helped to move the bags to the porch of the Tennyson's house. He had a frown on his face and my heart fluttered. He was absolutely breathtaking and apparently he was moving in. But why was he? And where were his parents? The Tennyson's weren't moving out and my mother never told me anything about someone moving in. He set a case on the floor and knocked on the door. He turned around and gazed at the surroundings and then he spotted me. I was not prepared for the dazzling smile that he flashed me. I gasped and nearly messed on myself with my soda. I looked back at him and saw that he was chuckling to himself. I managed a week smile and a wave, but he had already turned to Mrs. Tennyson who had opened the door.

Great! I thought. Make a fool out of yourself in front of the new eye candy. I got up and went inside before I made even more a fool of myself. One thing was for sure, he had a look about him that told me he was different. He looked exotic and my heart still couldn't quite calm down from the smile he flashed me.

Cian

I had finally arrived in San Diego. It was a long and exhausting flight and I needed a bed. I arrived at the Tennyson residence and had the taxi driver help me with my bags. I went to the door and knocked. Then I looked around the neighborhood. It was a nice place; quiet and sunny and it was clean. I could get used to living here. I noticed a boy sitting across the road on the porch of his house. He had a soda in his hand and was looking at me. He had shoulder length blond-almost white hair and his skin was a little tanned from the sun. He looked positively hot, and I'm not just talking about the hot weather! I smiled at him and was amused to see him falter and almost mess on himself. I couldn't help but laugh.

I heard the door open and turned to see a plump lady stand before me, with shocking red hair. She smiled and motioned for me to come in.

"You must Mr. Jansen," she said, helping me with my luggage. "I'm so glad you could make it."

"Thank you Mrs. Tennyson, I appreciate it," I told her as I was ushered in.

"No problem, and call me Nora. James, Kayla! Mr. Jansen is here!" She shouted upstairs.

"Please, just call me Cian; I'm not even twenty yet."

"Really, I must admit that I thought you would be a bit older."

"It's okay," I told her.

"Your accent is so unique, like a combination of Scottish and Australian but more... rougher yet refined."

"Uh... okay?" I said not knowing what else to say.

"Don't mind my mother," said a girl I assumed to be Kayla come in to the room. She was a bit taller than her mother and she had a slim figure. Her hair was as red and shiny as her mother's, but it looked beautiful. She was smiling at me when she came in.

We continued to chat until her mother told her to show me to my room. I had already met Mr. Tennyson who was a tall and handsomely built man, with pitch black hair. Kayla seemed to look more like him, with blue eyes and sharp features. We reached my room and she showed me in. I set my bags beside the bed and flopped onto it. Kayla seemed to hesitate and then she came to sit next to me. I had a feeling that she was starting to see me as a potential boyfriend, which couldn't happen. She attended the same school I was teaching at and I would probably be teaching her, not to mention the fact that I'm gay. I thought to myself that I should be honest with her instead of leading her on.

"I didn't expect you to be so cute," she said leaning closer to me. Wow, talk about moving in quickly! Now was the opportune time to clear the air.

"Um... Kayla, I can't." She looked at me, not understanding. "I can see what you want, and I can't. I would probably be teaching you at school."

"So?" she asked, finally grasping what I was trying to tell her.

"It wouldn't be proper for a teacher and a student to have a relationship."

"Nobody will know," she urged, moving a little closer.

"And... and I'm... gay."

She froze and looked at my face. She could apparently see that I wasn't joking. I decided to salvage something from this.

"But I think I would like a close friend to talk to."

She remained silent.

"Look, I'm sorry. If I were straight, I would definitely go for you..."

"It's okay," she interrupted. "I'd like that too."

We hugged and I thanked her. We continued to chat while I was busy packing, and we went down when her mother called us for dinner. She was actually a nice person to talk to.

I decided that I wanted to see that boy again. He intrigued me and that was something that only Johnny Chase did. I was waiting for the right excuse to go over to the Tennyson's house, but nothing came up that day he moved in. I asked my mother if she knew that a boy had moved into the Tennyson's house and she said that Mrs. Tennyson had mentioned it in passing.

"Oh before I forget, Mrs. Tennyson asked me to lend her my bread maker. Could you take it over to her please, honey?" My mother just handed me gold on a silver platter.

I nodded vigorously and she went to get it. I waited impatiently for her. I even forgot that school would start tomorrow. She came back with the machine in its box and I bounded out of the house and hopped over to the other side of the road. I didn't know why I was feeling like this. I only dream about Johnny Chase.

I walked up the porch, noticing the scuff marks on the floor in front of the door. The porch was battered but sturdy and there were pot plants lined along the wall. I knocked on the door and waited my heart beating faster with every second. I dearly hoped he would open the door. I heard footsteps on the other side of the door and I froze in anticipation. My eyes were glued to the floor and when the door opened I stared at the most beautiful, tanned bare feet I ever saw. I knew at once who answered. It seemed as if time stood still as I slowly looked up, but in reality it was only seconds. My eyes skimmed over bare, slim, hairy legs that were long. He wore boxer length jean cutoffs that hid a good size bulge and as my gaze moved higher I could see that he was wearing a grey muscle hugger t-shirt. I looked at his face and my heart stopped before it sped up again. He had the most seductive bedroom eyes that were the color of dark chocolate. His smile was slow and deliberate. Did he notice that I was staring at him? Speaking of staring, he was looking dead at me, in the eyes. The fact that he was practically bare-chested nearly blew me away, but I managed to keep my composure.

"Uh... hi, is Mrs. Tennyson home?" I blundered loudly.

"Who is it?" I heard a female voice shout from the kitchen I took to be Kayla. This adonis was most probably dating her.

"Must be a neighbor," he shouted back. His accent didn't sound familiar so I couldn't place his origins. His voice wasn't all that deep and sort of hitched the higher it went. It made me shiver.

"Come inside," he moved away from the door and I stepped in hesitantly.

Kayla came in wearing skimpy pink hot pants and a white sweater that showed off her navel. The two of them looked really comfortable.

"Oh hi D.M, did you need something?" she beamed at me. She was a year older than me, which makes this boy as old as she is, if not older. So he was still a teenager.

"Uh no, your mother asked my mother to borrow this," I held up the box with the bread maker.

"Thanks D.M. I'll tell mum you brought it over."

I made my way to the door and the boy opened it. I was surprised Kayla didn't introduce us. But I wasn't going to ask. As far as I was concerned he was off limits. Kayla was always popular at school, and got all the hot guys and jocks. I assumed the boy would be attending the same school as us.

I left and went back home. I was so hard from staring at him that it hurt. I needed relief and as soon as I got home. I dashed up to my room to relieve myself.
