Chapter 5 - Cellphones should be outlawed

Sandy is ‘a dream come true’. He’s smart, gorgeous not only physically and mentally but spiritually too. I mean who turns a person who intentionally throws a ball at you with the intention to do harm into a friend.

I know he’s not going to be on any school teams because of wanting to spend time with Noah and me. That's really sweet but in ways I wish he would so I could take Noah to all his games or meets.

Today was Sandy’s first day at school and it really sucks that we don’t have any classes together, but then if we did I’d probably flunk out because my attention wouldn’t be on my studies but on my hot boyfriend.

Already my friends say they’ve noticed a difference in me. Billy Cordell says it looks like I’m alive again. I am.

I was surprised when Sandy said he didn’t have any homework.

“It’s not like I didn’t get assignments,” Sandy said,  “but I’ve already done it. Seeing as we don’t have lunch together I grabbed a bite to eat and spent most of my time in the library doing all my morning assignments. After lunch I did whatever assignments I had in the following class. History which I have before PE was a reading assignment which by chance I read during class after I finished my math assignment.”

After I finished my homework I went to Noah’s room because I figured he and Sandy would be there. Noah’s idea of swimming is sitting on the steps at the shallow end of the pool and splashing in the water. He hates getting his face wet. Michael tried to teach him to swim but gave up because he screams his head off the second you try to get his head under the water which is kind of weird because in the bathtub it doesn’t bother him.

I think Michael is in one of his moods because when I went into the kitchen to see if Sandy and Noah were there I asked him if he knew where they were he said, “Why don’t you asked your dad? I’m sure he knows where Sandy is.”

Okay, Michael is pissed with dad for some reason.

As soon as I headed down to the basement where the pool was I could hear Noah say, “Again, Beech!” and when I got to the pool area I was shocked to see Sandy swimming underwater with Noah holding on.”

Dad was there and must have seen my jaw hit the floor. “Your boyfriend is awesome. I mean look at those two!”

When they surfaced Noah saw me and said excitedly, “Daddy! Beech and me are swimming. Beech is a dolphin!”

Sandy was smiling too, “Hey, dude! Isn’t he great? He’s a total natural at swimming! Come get in!”

I stripped and got in and for the next ten minutes I was the dolphin for a while until Dad challenged Sandy to a race. I had to watch this.

“Noah was yelling ‘GO BEECH! GO BEECH!’

Dad is soooo out of shape. Sandy won easily and Noah was jumping around saying ‘Yay, Beech!’ We were all laughing.

Michael came in and curtly told us dinner was ready.

“What’s up his ass?” I said as Michael was leaving.

“That’s enough, Bastian,” said Dad, “He’s just pissed with me.”

“Why is he pissed with you?” I asked while we were getting dress.

“He’s in one of his moods,” replied Dad, “Don’t worry about it.”

Dinner was sort of quiet and Noah decided he didn’t want to eat his vegetables.

“Noah, eat your vegetables,” said Michael curtly.

“I don’t like them they’re nasty,” retorted Noah.

I could see Michael was about to get really pissed with Noah and I’m sure Sandy saw it because he said, “Noah, your Grandpa Mike made you a delicious meal with delicious vegetables. I’m eating mine so they will make me a strong dolphin. Don’t you want to be a strong dolphin rider?”

Noah smiled and began eating his vegetables.

“So, that’s how you get him to do things - you bride him,” said Michael snidely.

It really pissed me off, “What the fuck, Michael!” I said. At the same time the doorbell rang and Michael left.

“Bastian,” said Sandy in a hushed voice, “He’s your dad and besides it sets a bad example for Noah.”

“Sorry, but …” I was interrupted by Sandy kissing me and then Michael announced that Sandy mom was waiting for him in the car.

He said something that was so sweet, “Darn, I haven't got to spend enough time with you. I’ll help you do your homework tomorrow so we can play dolphin rides with Noah.” We kissed.

He turned to Noah, “I have to go home now with grandma. I’ll see you tomorrow and after your daddy does his homework we will play dolphins, okay?”

“Yippee! I love you Beech,” said Noah.

“I love and adore you now and forever, Noah,” said Sandy and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

He got up from the table and walked around to Dad, “I hope you and Michael get things sorted out because I love you both.” Sandy gave dad a kiss but at the same time dad turned his head and Sandy’s lips end up on Dad’s lips. He pulled back so quickly and was red from embarrassment.

I thought it was funny and he is so cute when he blushes.

When Michael came back in the kitchen Dad said, to Michael, “We need to talk.”

“No, I need a couple of Tylenols and a good night sleep alone,” said Michael.

“You are such a bitch!” said Dad contemptuously.

“And you are a fucking prick!” retorted Michael.

“Would you two mind arguing somewhere else. You are setting a bad example to my son.” I said to the both of them.

Michael turned and stormed off. Sometimes I wonder who the baby is in this family.

“I’m sorry,” Dad apologized.

“He’s jealous of Sandy isn’t he?” stated more than asked.

“Yeah, and until now I thought that it was my fault because I was raving about him to Michael last night. Sandy’s got talent and I tried to get him to get involved in school sports. But he won’t.”

“Yeah, I know. But I’ll persuade him to cuz I know he loves sports. I mean it would be so cool for Noah to go to his games and meets. I can just see Noah leading the cheerleaders in ‘Go Beech’,” I laughed and looked over to Noah. He was sitting in his highchair sound asleep.

I looked at Dad, “You said until now, what did you mean?”

“How long did Michael try to get Noah to go deeper into the pool than the steps?”

“A month, I tried too and so did you and then we gave up,” I replied.

“In the space of what half an hour – an hour, Sandy not only got Noah in to the water but to ride on his back under the water! There have been times when Michael fears he’s losing me or you? Remember Australia? He had you convinced that I was two timing him. I wasn’t. In all the time we’ve been together I only cheated once and that was when I had sex with your mom. There have been times when I’ve flirted with another guy but nothing more. I love Michael. I always have. I think I always will.”

It’s true, Michael had me convinced. I nodded to dad that I understood.

“I’ll clean up here. You go put your son to bed.”

The next morning I was anxious to get to school to see Sandy. I waited by the school entrance but when his bus arrived he didn’t get off. Of course I worried and I worried all the way up to lunch time because I hadn’t seen him even in the hallways.

After lunch I got a call to go to the office. When I got there Dad was waiting for me. He looked frazzled which immediately reminded me of the day he told me Leo was dead.

“Dad? Dad, Dad what’s wrong?” I asked.

“Let’s go to the car, Bastian.”

“No! Tell me what’s wrong. Where’s Sandy, I haven’t seen him all day,” I felt my world collapsing.

I saw a tear trickle slowly down his cheek. I knew it was something bad.

I wondered if I’d ever get my happy son back after his boyfriend Leo was murdered. It took time and lots of listening and caring and love. He went through nearly every emotion under the sun but thanks to Michael, his many friends and most of all Noah he came through okay. He wasn’t the same happy, determined young man but he was happy most of the time.

I think Noah was the best medicine and therapy for him because Noah gave him a reason to live and gave him a future. It wasn’t until a few days ago that I saw that spark of life that was suddenly bloomed again the day he met Sandy Beech.

Sandy is like a ray of sunshine that forces itself through a cloudy sky and makes life beautiful again. I couldn’t get over the way Noah took to Sandy immediately like they were life long friends. He was always kind of shy with strangers but as it turned out Sandy Beech was no stranger to Noah.

This morning Bastian was so anxious to get to school.

“Why are you in such a hurry to get to school this morning?” I asked Bastian.

“Because I want to see him get off the bus and I want to tell him how much Noah loves him. Last night when I put Noah in his bed he was so sweet. He opened his sleepy little eyes and said, “Daddy I love Beech” and quick as that he closed is eyes and fell asleep again.” My romantic boy sighed.

“I love him so much and it’s not because he’s so ultimately hot; it’s the sweet little comments he sometimes says under his breath namely to himself that he doesn’t think anybody hears. But I hear him. You know he idolizes you?”

“He does?” I asked.

“Yep, he said he thinks you’re not only one hot stud but you are a wonderfully caring person,” replied Bastian then he giggled, “And he said most of all you have the most awesome son in the world bar none.”

I let Bastian out and headed off to work. I did my usual routine and pulled into a Starbucks near where our offices are when my phone rang. It was Michael.

“Hello Michael,” I said.

“Brian, Noah’s locked himself in his room and he just tells me to go away and he hates me.”

“What started all this?” I asked.

“Well, Sandy biked over here cuz he wanted to catch a ride with you and Bastian and Noah saw him and threw a fit because he wanted Sandy to stay and I got pissed with Noah and told him to go to his room. I think Sandy decided to go on and bike to school.”

“Surely, he would have called to tell us he wanted a ride,” I said.

“He did and I sort of forgot to tell you…”

I was pissed, “You forgot to tell me or you deliberately didn’t tell me.”

“Well, I was still pissed off.”

“You know Michael one of these days you are going to regret these jealousy streaks you have. In 17 years the only time I had sex with any one but you was with Melanie. You think I’m in love with Sandy well I’m not – I love him like a son and it’s time you came back down to reality and realize that our son loves him more than he’s ever loved anyone or anything in his whole life and our grandson loves him and wants him as a second daddy.”

“Okay, I’m really sorry for being a shit. Can you go get Bastian?”

“Yeah, I go back and get Bastian. Try and keep calm.”

I was about to order my coffee when I got a call from my office.

“Hello, this is Brian McCormick.”

“Brian, this is Joe Beech, I just got a call from the hospital Sandy’s been in an accident – someone – someone hit him on his bike. He was biking to school because he must have missed you and Bastian. They say he’s –he’s – he’s in critical condition. I-I have to go…”

“Joe I’m two minutes from the office. I’ll take you. Just hold on.”

Due to the morning traffic it took us twenty minutes to get to the hospital. We rushed to Emergency.

They told us Sandy’s condition was critical and he was in the process of having a CT scan. He was unconscious on arrival and had sustained fracture to his left femur and skull fracture. It was probable that neurosurgeon would have to be called in depending on the severity of the TBI(Traumatic Brain Injury).

I could see that Joe was beside himself with worry. I called a friend who was a highly respected neurosurgeon, “Could I speak with Dr. Chalmers, this is Brian McCormick, please,” I asked the person who answered the phone. I waited only a few seconds before Dr. Chalmers answered, “Brian, it’s so good to hear from you. How’s that gorgeous son of yours?”

“Hi, Cindy, I don’t think he going to be doing too good when he finds out his boyfriend was in an accident which is,” I paused to control my emotions, “Sorry, I need your help. The boy’s name is Sandy Beech. He was hit by car when the driver who was on their cellphone swerved into the bike lane. He’s going to need someone really good…someone I trust…someone Bastian trusts.”

Cindy asked what hospital we were at and I told her. She said she was on her way. I thanked her and looked over at Joe who had heard the conversation.

“She’s one of the best neurosurgeons in Chicago and possibly the world. She’s on her way over. She adores Bastian.”

“I better call Karen. She doesn’t even know yet.”

“I’ll send a company car to pick her up. I’m sure she’ll be upset so she shouldn’t drive. What about Robert?”

“He’s at school.”

“Okay, I have to pick up Bastian; Noah is giving Michael a hard time. So I’ll pick up Robert at the same time and after I drop off Bastian I bring Robert here. Dr. Cynthia Chalmers is on her way here. Let her know I’ve gone to get Robert.”

Joe nodded.

As I got to my car my phone rang.
“Hello.”

“Brian where are you? It’s been over an hour.”

“Sorry, I had to take Joe to the hospital. Sandy was hit by a car. Apparently the driver was on her cellphone and swerved into the bike lane.” I could no longer control my emotions and burst into tears, “his- his condition is critical.” I wanted to scream and rant but it would only make a bad situation worse. “I’m going to get Bastian and Robert now. I’ll drop Bastian off. I don’t want to talk to you right now because I know I say things I’ll regret, but you better start figuring out how you are going to make things right with Bastian, Noah, me and mostly Sandy if he lives.” I hung up.

A few minutes later Michael called back, “Brian, I’m so sorry,” he cried, “I’ll move out, I’ll leave.”

“Michael, that’s not going to make things right or any better. Bastian is going to need your support to get through this. I’m not going to tell him about the phone call. That will be for you to do when the time is right and now is not the right time. Do you understand?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Cindy is on her way to the hospital she’ll keeps us informed. Now pull yourself together.”

I hung up and headed for the school.
