SATAN'S WORK

by Maccout Mann

Chapter 1

Parksville is a few miles east of Cleveland, Tennessee on U. S. 64. It is at the foot of Todd and Chestnut Mountains and right near the edge of Ocoee Lake. In the early 1950s there were about 2,000 residents, three of whom were fourteen-year-old Harold Baxter and his parents.

That part of Eastern Tennessee was and is a bedrock of Christian Fundamentalism. Several denominations make their international headquarters in Cleveland. And the Baxter family were stern adherents of the local Congregation of the Lord. They attended services twice on Sunday and on Wednesday Evening.

They listened to Reverend Moody, their pastor, tell them that Armageddon was coming soon, and that those who didn't believe and weren't righteous would be consigned to the fires of hell.

On Easter Day when Harold was twelve, he professed his faith and was baptized. He awaited his further baptism by the Holy Spirit, but thus far it had not occurred.

The Baxter family did not use alcohol. They did not use "bad language." They did not attend movies. (The nearest movie house was in Cleveland anyway.) They only listened to "Christian" radio stations, and they had not yet been exposed to the evils of television. Sex was never mentioned in their household.

Harold had not been nor would he be exposed to a "birds, bees, and flowers" lecture. Before his marriage his father might talk to him about what was expected on the night of his wedding. But after all, all the children had seen farm animals copulating, so they understood how babies were made. Hards-on happened, especially in the morning, but they were mostly to keep you from wetting the bed.

Harold attended public school, of course, and some of the students there were not "real believers." Harold and his fellow true Christians didn't associate with them, except when they had to. The junior high school didn't have a physical education program, so Harold had never taken a shower with other boys or seen anyone unclothed. Good Christian boys might go shirtless around home, but never would they go out in public "half naked."

Harold was a good looking blond kid with blue eyes, regular features, and a pert nose. He was slightly built. Most boys his age were. What muscles they had were developed doing chores, climbing trees, or playing pickup games of baseball or kickball. Horseshoes was a popular pastime, and Harold often played with his only close friend, Mose Parrish. Mose looked very much like Harold, except that his hair and eyes were dark brown. There was a horseshoe court at their church, although the stakes were set less than the regulation forty feet apart.

The Baxters lived on the very edge of town and didn't have close neighbors with kids. Harold spent much of his time alone. He loved to hike into the mountains that skirted his family's property. He liked to watch the deer and other animals. He appreciated the beauty of nature and enjoyed exploring the small caves found in the rugged terrain. He always carried a small flashlight to light his way in the caverns.

It was a beautiful June afternoon. Harold had climbed a quarter of the way up the mountain, when he saw a fox to the south of him. He carefully followed, until the fox disappeared in the brush. He was closer to Highway 64 than he usually came, so he decided to go on over and peer down on the traffic from high above. It was then that he spied an unfamiliar cave. It was new to him, but the tracks leading up to the mouth showed that it had been visited by more than a few other two legged creatures. The entrance was only about four feet wide, but it was tall enough walk into without getting on your knees or even stooping. Harold decided to investigate.

He entered the cave and saw that the passage extended perhaps fifty feet from the mouth before it veered to the left. Harold had gone only a few feet, however, before he realized that beyond the curve there was light, like from torches.

The presence of fire momentarily panicked Harold. Could outlaws be hiding in the cavern? He quickly made his way back into the sunlight.

Then, summoning up his courage and overcome with curiosity, he decided to creep back in and see if he could find out what was going on without being detected. He reentered the cave and slowly moved down toward the dogleg. He heard voices. They sounded like teenaged boys.

After the passage turned it opened into a larger chamber which was being lit by kerosene tiki lanterns. As Harold reached the point where he could see into the chamber he was shocked to see Timothy Moody, the seventeen-year-old son of his pastor, and another boy he didn't know. Timothy was one of the better developed boys in the community. He had prominent pecs and a hard gut. Like almost everyone else in Parksville his features were decidedly Anglo-Saxon. His companion had sharper features and was a bit shorter than Timothy. Both were completely naked. Both had a hard-on. They were even holding each other's penises. And on one wall of the cave was painted a huge image of Satan and on another an equally large male organ, fully erect.

"Our Lord gave you a nice one, motherfucker," Timothy told his companion.

"Didn't do bad by you, either."

"Can't wait 'til your baptism Saturday," Timothy says.

"Shit, man, I can't either. Never had it up the ass."

Harold was petrified.

Then he heard Timothy say, "Well, what do we have over there?"
