It had been a long time since Mary Jane Watson had last seen the love of her life, Peter Parker, and it was beginning to affect her in more ways than one.
Her homelife had calmed down somewhat, but her acting career in the greater New York City area had come to a slow trickle, and for the last two years, she found herself struggling....just to stay afloat. It was there that she would experience the first of the series of changes that would soon overtake her life.
Late one evening, Mary Jane was working the late shift at the research lab for a friend who had to leave campus due to a family tragedy when she discovered that someone had broken into the lab. Knowing exactly what to do, she quickly and discreetly called for security while she herself decided to investigate what was going on.
Inside the main lab, she found out who had broken: a group of radical animal rights activists had decided to pay a call to the laboratory to liberate some of the animals caged up. Taken by surprise, the radicals tried to make a hasty retreat, but somehown, Miss Watson caught one of them by the jacket collar and yanked her back! A fight between her and one of the vandals was in progress, but it would be another ten minutes or so before any help would arrive. Somehow, the hooligan shoved the redhead against a series of glass terrariums that had been cordoned off, forcing the majority of the glass cages to be broken. Suddenly, Mary Jane realized what the perpetrator of the animal liberation had done for she had forced her to accidentally release a collection of the most dangerous invertebrates on Earth. Already, she was terrified for not only had help was still late getting here, but she knew what these creatures were capable of when they got into the wrong hands. Unfortunately still, one spider had managed to climb onto her right shoulder and take a bite on her right neck area, knocking her out and cold....
It was a few days later when Mary Jane awoke to find herself inside the hospital all groggy and weak as she looked around to find out where she was at.
"Wh-what happened? Wh-where am I?"
She questioned herself as she attempted to get out of bed, but was still weak from the incident as she struggled to walk out of her room and into the hall with only a smock covering her. Once in the hall, she felt herself weaken ever still before she finally fell to the floor alerting the nurses and a doctor or two who was on duty at the time. They quickly got her back into bed and told her to get some rest, but the young girl had questions she needed answered.
"Doctor, what the hell's going on? Why am I here?"
"You've been in an accident at the school research lab, miss, but we need to keep you in the hospital for observation and some tests."
"What tests, doctor?"
"One of the nurses took the liberty of drawing some of your blood. It's still being tested right now as we speak, but for right now, you need to get some rest. You're still weak from the incident at the lab."
"Well, can I at least call my family to tell them what's up?"
The doctor on duty knew what was coming as he had a smile across his face.
"Funny you should mention that because someone by the name of Parker is here to see you. You want me to send her in?"
"Why, sure doctor, but can you tell me when I can be able to go home?"
"It will be but a day or so and then we'll decide to whether or not to release you, but for the moment, you need to get some rest."
Mary Jane tried to question him some more, but the doctor had other duties to perform during the rest of his shift, so he had May Parker sent into her room.

In fact, the research lab's been having a lot of problems with the local animal activists in town on account of what's been going on at the lab at night behind closed doors. I took the liberty of talking with your boss and he said that you would be paid full compensation on account of your accident and that it would be better that you come home with me, Mary."
"You mean I can move in with you and...."
"I'll give you a grace period before you can start looking for work again or until the acting offers begin coming up again still."
