Geeks - Chapter 1 by Sebastian

Yo dude! Wasup? jez wanted 2 say bye and tks 4 all d chats dude u jez signed on whas wrong? u wudnt understand. try me! im gay & lifes ovr 4 me whoa! Go to voice! no! I gotta go! dude please! Talk 2 me :'( Pleeeezzze!!!!

"Hello, Gigabit," cried Syburboi.

"Dude, your life is not over! You're an awesome person! It's doesn't mean shit if your gay! Okay?" I replied. I only knew this person as Syburboi. We had had hundreds of chats for over a year mainly about hacks but occasionally stuff about our likes and dislikes - nothing heavy.

"Mine is. My parents hate homos. I'm a failure and a disgrace to them and he's gonna tell them."

"Who? Dude talk to me" was all I could think of to say.

There was silence.

"Syburboi, talk me," I cried, "I care. And besides who will I get to talk to about hacks?"

"This friend of mine, Jeff, was over here yesterday and it just happened," he spoke softly still crying, "We were lying on the bed and I started feeling him up and he got hard. He lay on my bed and let me do it, never said stop or anything. Eventually he came and then." Syburboi went silent and then began to sob.

"And then what?" asked I softly.

"He got angry at me called me a faggot and said he was gonna tell everyone at school."

"That asshole!" I thought. "You have any photos of him?" I asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"How many?"

"A few."

"Zip them and send them to me," I said.

"Why?"

"Blackmail of course!" I laughed.

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"He's threatened to out you - well you threaten to out him. Send him a pic of him sucking some guy's cock. Did I tell you I'm an expert at Photoshop?" I laughed.

"You'd do that for me?"

"Yeah. As I said I need someone to chat to about hacks."

"Are you gay?" Syburboi asked.

"I never answer questions about me - you know that but I will tell you that it makes no diff to me that you are," I replied.

I got the photos and found one that was perfect - doctored it up a bit and sent it back to Syburboi and told him to let me know tonight how the plan worked.

Of course all this took some time and I knew I was going to be late for school - "What the heck!" I thought, "I have a 3.4 GPA."

I showered, threw on some clothes and dashed out the door, jumped on my bike, peddled at top speed to school, ran down the hall to homeroom and entered the room a bit disheveled in appearance.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Keller. You're late. You have been to the office?" asked Mr. Becker.

"No, sir, I'm only forty-five seconds late," I said quietly.

Mr. Becker leered at me, "You know the rules. Lateness requires a hall pass."

"What an asshole," muttered I to himself.

What was that you said?" Mr. Becker asked.

"Nothing, sir."

"I distinctly heard something Mr. Keller," said Mr. Becker.

"It wasn't important," I said turning to leave the room.

"Keller! I asked you what you said not it's importance! Now speak!"

I turned around looked at him and totally out of character I replied, "Woof! Woof! I said to myself that you are a fucking asshole!"

The class broke out in laughter. But what really upset him was the smirk that appeared on my face.

"QUIET! Or you will all be in detention!" yelled Mr. Becker.

Becker grabbed my arm and ushered me out of the room to the office.

"Mr. Choudry, please," demanded Becker.

"Mr. Choudry is in a meeting. Ms. Tobler is available."

"Fine."

"Ms. Tobler, I want this student disciplined! Late arrival! And disruption of the entire class!"

I rolled his eyes. Again totally out of character. Normally I tried to be invisible.

"Okay Mr. Becker. I will handle."

Becker left.

Keller stood there quite back in character looking at the floor.

"What happened?"

"Huh? Oh, I was forty-five seconds late and he wanted me to go to the office. I muttered something to myself and turned to leave. He told me to speak so I went 'Woof Woof!' I said to myself that you are a f-ing asshole I can't help it that people thought it was funny."

"You went, 'Woof! Woof!'" she asked. "Did you say f-ing or the whole word?

"Yes. The whole word."

"This is the third time this week Joshua that you have been late and caused a disruption of some sort. What's going on?"

"Nada. Nothing. Zip. He's just trying to get even with me!"

"Oh?"

"Well, you know he accused me of changing his test questions on the mid-semester test!"

She smiled, "Did you?"

"No! I swear it! He's just a sucky teacher!"

"Yeah, I hear you but if I were to guess who changed his test I would bet it was you."

I shrugged my shoulders. She knew me too well. Well, she would; she is my aunt.

"Aunt Lil, can't you change me to another homeroom? Becker is going to hound me all year! It's plainly harassment!"

"I will do it on one condition. You join the Computer Club."

"What? Aw! Aunt Lil! They are a bunch of nerds."

"And you're not?" she laughed.

"No! I hate clubs!"

"Josh, over the last two years I've watched you become more and more hidden - secluded - you need to make friends,"

"I've got hundreds of friends."

"Really? You mean as 'wrong arm of the law', 'newbie helper', 'gigabyte'?"

"Gigabit. You see a byte is made up of eight bits..."

"Josh! Don't try to get me off the subject. Your quote friends unquote are all cyberspace friends. They are not real friends."

"That's not true! I helped a boy this morning! He's my friend he was thinking of suicide! I stopped him - I helped him."

"That's very commendable. What's his name?"

"Uh-uh, Syburboi," I replied softly, "but he's still my friend! I saved his life."

She sighed, "Well, back to Mr. Becker's class. Here take this." She handed me a detention slip with the teacher's name on it. BECKER.

"Aw! Aunt Lil! Not detention with Becker!"

She smiled, "Becker or the computer club?"

"You are so mean! That's blackmail! Or extortion!"

"Choose, Josh."

"When do they meet?"

"Tomorrow after school in the computer lab."

So, here I sit surrounded by a bunch of nerdy students. I'm a geek. Not a nerd! In my humble opinion there is a big difference. I took out my notebook - might as well get some work done.

I was about to start writing when I noticed a red headed boy looking at me. His name is Mark. He's in Becker's homeroom. He sees me looking at him, turns away and blushes. He's really cute. He tried talking to me once, but I wasn't in the mood. The girl next to him turns and looks back at me. I smile. She's sort of an attractive girl.

A black dude comes in. He doesn't look like he should be here cuz he doesn't look nerdy. He has a nice smile. He talks to Mark and the girl. Mark blushes again. The black dude laughs. Slowly, Mark gets out of his chair prompted by the black dude. They are walking back towards me. Shit!

"Hey!" says the black dude.

"Hey!" I mumble not making any real eye contact.

"My name is Malcolm Jones and this is Mark Hathaway. I've seen you around but never talked to you. Anyway we just wanted to welcome you to the club."

I nodded.

"So, are you into computers?" he asked.

"Sort of, mainly software?" I barely got out. "I gotta go." I knocked my notebook off the table. Malcolm picked it up and handed it to me and I put it into my backpack.

"Why?" Mark asked.

I shrugged my shoulders, stood up and left.

When I reached the hall I found Aunt Lil standing in the hallway with a smug look on her face.

"I don't believe the meeting is over. A deal is a deal," she said as she waved a detention slip slowly back and forth.

"I hate you," I mumbled.

She smiled and I returned to the classroom.

Mark looked up. He looked sad. I wanted to tell him I was sorry. It was the second time I walked away from him. But I had to. It's all very complicated. The girl next to him glared at me. Malcolm had a quizzical look on his face. I returned to the back of the room and rested my head on my arms maybe I could fall asleep.

No such luck.

"Hey," I looked up to see Malcolm, "Glad your back. I guess Tobler caught you leaving."

I smiled and then blushed. I don't know why I blushed, but I did.

"You know Mark is really a shy person. It took a lot for him to come over here to welcome you to the club. He thinks you hate him. Do you?"

"No. I don't even know him. I'm kinda a loner," I said softly, "I-I really didn't mean to upset him. He's got nice eyes..." My voice trailed off I did not mean to say that. He's going to know I'm gay now. I can feel myself blushing. Oh God! I put my head back down on my arms.

"Yeah, he does. So, you want to join us?"

I shook my head no.

I must have been tired because I fell asleep; the next thing I knew someone was gently shaking me.

I looked up and saw a smiling Malcolm. The other students were gone.

"Hey, sleepyhead. The meeting is over."

"Thanks," I mumbled.

"No, problem. So, what are you doing now?"

"Going home," I replied.

"Oh," he said sounding sort of disappointed.

I picked up my backpack and started for the door.

"Josh, thanks."

I stopped and looked at him. I didn't know he knew my name.

"For what?"

"For saving a friend's life."

"What?"

"Saving a friend's life - Gigabit," he said softly.

I know I must have been standing there with my mouth open frozen in that position, unable to speak for what seemed like an eternity passed before I could speak.

"How do you know?" I managed to get out.

"Well, he's Mandy's best friend. They are more like brother and sister. He told us what Gigabit had done for him. Damn clever of you cuz it worked like a charm."

"But how do you know I'm Gigabit?"

"When I picked up your notebook - it says 'Property of Gigabit'," he smiled.

"Oh. So he's okay now?"

"Yes and I didn't tell him who you are either. I really didn't feel it was my place to."

I smiled. I looked down at the floor then back at him. "Mark has really nice eyes."

Malcolm smiled, "Yes, they are sparkling blue," he paused, "especially, when he talks about his secret crush."

"Oh, that's good," I said slightly sad. Mark had a crush. I tried force a smile, which usually comes out as a lopsided grin.

"You like him, huh?" asked Malcolm.

"I-I really don't know him. Besides..." my voice trailed off.

Malcolm rolled his eyes, "Besides, what?"

"I'm not..." I could feel tears getting ready to overspill. I turned to walk away. Why me? Why couldn't I have been part of the ninety percent? Malcolm grabbed my arm. "Please let me go. I-I need to go," I said. I hated crying in front of anyone. I gave my arm a yank. I was free; I ran out of the school.

Malcolm was calling after me but I ignored him. I think I passed Aunt Lil but I didn't stop. I unlocked my bike and took off.

I arrived home, ran up to my room, closed my door and collapsed on my bed sobbing.

The phone rang. I ignored it. Five minutes later, it rang again. I disconnected it. I fell asleep.

Again someone was shaking my shoulder and calling my name. It was Aunt Lil.

"What?" I said in a pout.

"What happened? I saw you running from the computer club with Malcolm Jones calling out to you."

"I'm tired," I said and turned away.

"Are you gay?" she asked.

Am I wearing a sign that says I know I'm not a hetero?

"Leave me alone! I'm tired!" I said angrily.

"Joshua, it's okay if you are. I'm not going to like you any less. It doesn't matter," she said softly.

"It does! It does matter. You don't know what it's like. Look at what happened to Jerry Walsh. You think it didn't matter to him that everyday people would call him a fag! They bump into him on purpose and then accuse him of trying to feel them up. I saw it all! Finally, he couldn't take it! And now he's dead."

"His death was an accident, why didn't you tell someone?"

"I told Becker! He ignored me. He did nothing! I hate him! You want to know what? I confess, I messed up his tests and his records. He knows it was me! He knows why I did it! He's an asshole! So, don't tell me it doesn't matter!"

Then I saw Mom standing at the door. "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE! I DON'T NEED ANYBODY!" I screamed.

"Josh!" Mom exclaimed.

"GET OUT! GET OUT! AND LEAVE ME ALONE!"

I turned my head back to my pillow. As I sobbed I heard the door close.

I stayed in my room in my bedroom for two days except for making myself a sandwich today. I did what I always did when I was depressed - I hacked out a program.

So, now they know - my parents know I am gay. I am such a disappointment to them. They tell me they don't care - that they still love me, but I can see the disappointment in my dad's eyes. I remember hearing him say when Jerry Walsh died saying "I'm glad Josh isn't gay - I don't know what I would do if he was."

"I know now what you would do Dad. You'd pretend it didn't matter. You'd try to hide your disappointment that I'm not the son you dreamed of having." I muttered to myself as I set in front of a blank monitor.

The doorbell rang. I ignored it. I lay down on the bed. I was so tired. Forty-eight hours is my limit. I reached to turn off the light on my nightstand and knocked over a pill bottle and my clock crashed to the floor. My hand never made it to the light I was simply too tired.

I thought of Mark. He was so cute. He was looking at me and shouting something. I could see him. I could hear him. I simply was too tired to understand what he was saying. I loved his eyes. "I must be dreaming," I thought as I closed my eyes.

To be continued. Write me.
