Luke could work wherever they lived whereas Josh needed a base, either in the form of employment or if he started his own business.
A few weeks later, Hugh took a turn for the worst. His headaches got worse, he became listless, often felt nauseous and was only able to sit around all day; he also became very depressed. He now needed constant care so it was tough for Luke and Josh but they coped well and shared the chores between them. Jason also often came round and helped out whenever he could.
Colin, the District Nurse increased his frequency of visits as well which Luke thought was very kind of him. He wasn't too sure whether the additional visits were to see Hugh or Luke and Josh. There was no doubt in their minds that he was gay and enjoyed their company!
Each day they managed to get Hugh washed and dressed, albeit only in a dressing gown since he'd lost the will to put any other clothes on, and helped him downstairs. Luke suggested they get a bed for him in the living room since the sofa bed was not comfortable enough for long periods, but Hugh wouldn't hear of it. He much preferred his own bed and that was where he was going to end his days.
He did manage however to do the painting of Luke and Josh lying naked on the floor. When it was finished it was beautiful and both Luke and Josh loved it. It was tastefully done and neither of them had any qualms about it being on show to others but Hugh said he wanted it in his bedroom so he could gaze at it from his bed. He gave Luke instructions on what kind of frame to buy so he went out one day to get one. Once it was framed, he and Josh hung it in Hugh's bedroom.
Hugh also sketched drawings of the pair of them having sex showing their erections. These were just line drawings and kept in a portfolio of other erotic drawings Hugh had done over the years.
The other thing that Hugh did during this period of decline was to go through with Luke and Josh everything he felt they should know about the running of the farm, the things in the cottage they should be aware of, how to access his internet banking and various investments, where everything was filed away when the time came, plus a host of other information. It took several days to go through everything but Hugh was a well organised person so everything was in apple pie order. Luke found it especially hard to talk about all these things and just buried his head in Hugh's chest. It was Josh who made a note of everything he knew they would need to know when the time came so sat and made copious notes on his laptop. Hugh also transferred ten thousand pounds into Luke's bank account to pay for their living expenses whilst he was alive and for his funeral once he had died.
By the time all this had been completed, Luke just cried and cried. He just couldn't bear to think of Hugh no longer being around. After one of these sessions when Luke had gone off to wash his face of tears, Hugh pulled Josh to his side.
"Look after him for me Josh, won't you?"
"I will" Josh replied as he hugged Hugh, "it's been a privilege to have known you Hugh" he added.
"And you Josh and thank you once again for everything you have done for both me and Luke. It really has made these last few weeks so much easier to bear."
That night, when they had got Hugh into bed and gone back downstairs, Luke and Josh just held each other in a tight embrace. There was nothing to say but their thoughts were thinking of life without Hugh.
