Please Note: The "chemical helpers" listed in this, and the following chapters, did not exist in 1967. They are a product of the author's imagination.

In 1967, the most dangerous STDs were Syphilis and Gonorrhea, which could be cured by penicillin, or the new antibiotics. Condoms were not needed for gay sex.

A few hours later, Tom woke up. He carefully untangled himself from the sleeping John, got up, and went into the bathroom where he made drinks. John debated if he should spike John's drink, considering that John had remained erect longer than Tom thought of as normal for the augmented drink. After considering John's physical condition and what was going to happen that night, Tom concluded that spiking the drink was a good idea. He went to the tub and got the bag. Using the contents of the bag, he carefully measured 3 drops into John's drink. He quickly cleaned the medicine dropper, returned it to the bag, and put the bag back under the tub. He went out of the bathroom to find John waking up. Tom handed the spiked Rum and Coke to John, and took a swallow of his own Scotch and water. He got on John's bed and sat next to John. Tom asked: "What do you want to know?"

John took a swallow of his drink, then asked: "What does it mean to be gay?"

Tom choked on his drink and sputtered out: "That is a very wide open question. I will have to find the right words to answer you." He took a moment to think, then said: "The primary thing is that gay men and straight men are exactly the same, except in their desires for whom they want to have sex with, and which sex acts they want to perform. They are born that way. It is not a question of choice, and they cannot change what nature has dealt them. They both have dreams and work hard!

"The most important thing you have to know is that a males attraction to other men must be kept hidden! If the Army finds out, you might go to jail and be thrown out. Some straight men would probably beat the shit out of you, or even kill you. I learned at an early age, not to make a pass at a straight male. If you get together with another male, he must want the same thing! You must develop "Gaydar," that is you must learn to recognize other gay men. If you come on to a straight boy, the conclusion may not be pleasant, so you can't take a chance."

John said: "Even though I could not get it up for Lisa, I am not sure I am gay"

Tom answered: "I hope you are, as I would hope to get together with you in the future! You are very attractive to those who like males! Consider this: you could not get hard with Lisa, and you enjoyed sex with me and Johnothon/Saravit. Additional sexual experience with both sexes will allow you to make a final judgement as to your orientation." Tom knew (and felt guilty) that the spiked drink was responsible for John's inability to perform with Lisa, and he was also responsible for John being open to sex with men. He also realized that he was NOT responsible for John's enthusiastic participation in the sex acts. Was this John's suppressed nature coming through?

John asked: "Why are some people gay?"

Tom answered: "Nobody knows the answer. We think we are born that way. Throughout the entire history of the world, in all societies, 5% to 10% of those born have been gay! Both male and female, it is part of the human condition. Sometimes gays have been integrated into society, such as Ancient Greece, and in the Orient. In the west, it has been a different story. Being gay is a crime, according to local law. That may be due to the attitudes of Christianity? Some people have made a moral judgement, declaring that homosexuality is wrong, sick, or a choice. Well, I don't feel wrong or sick, nor have I made a choice. It is not my choice to get an erection when I see an attractive man! It just happens. I have no control over who turns me on! When you meet someone with the same proclivities, it can be beautiful; but there is always the chance that you might be discovered. Once you are outed, life is Hell! You can go to jail, be beaten up, or even killed. To survive, you must hide your true nature and "Fit In."

John sat there, trying to absorb what Tom had said! After a few moments of pondering. John said: "What about us?"

Tom answered: "What about us?"

Instead of answering the question, John prevaricated by asking: "What about Love? I may be a sexual innocent, but I know what love is."

Tom answered: "You have to realize that love and sex are separate but intertwined and there are different types of both! We have sex for several reasons: to make babies; to get your rocks off, (it feels good!); to bond and to express emotional commitment, also known as love; and to give pleasure to others. There are also different kinds of love..."

John interrupted, saying: "Tom, I like you, but I don't think I love you. You are my friend."

Tom said: "That's good, because I am not in love with you. I am attracted to you, but I don't love you. I am in love with someone else, someone whom you know!

John asked: "Who?" John ran through his mind all of the men in their unit, trying to figure out whom Tom loved.

Tom answered the question by saying: "I won't tell you right now, but I am sure you will figure it out. Let me continue: There are different kinds of love; there is the love of a parent for a child, and visa-versa; there is the love for a friend ; there is the love of a sibling and other members of your family; and there is romantic love for that special person. Sex is not a proper way to express love to a parent, sibling, or other family members. It is proper as an expression for a friend or that special person.

"Man is a social animal who cannot live by himself. There must be social contact with others of his species. There is someone out there who completes you, mentally, physically and emotionally; like two pieces of a puzzle fitting together. All their lives people search for that special person! The Lucky ones find that special person! The unlucky ones do not. If it is a union with members of the opposite sex, they get married, there is a public celebration, and babies follow. If the meeting is between people of the same sex, the relationship must be hidden in today's western world. This is not true in some other countries: Thailand and some European countries. Sexuality is a private thing that people don't talk about; and most people don't advertise it.

"What are we doing while searching for that special person? Sex is the instinct to reproduce. It is the second strongest instinct in the human body; only self preservation, and that includes eating, is stronger. Those of our predlication do not reproduce, but we still have the urge to reproduce, to have sex. The sex must be with another person. Masturbation is a stopgap, because it is done solely. After puberty, it is unsatisfactory, because it is a substitute for being with another person. It is in our bodies, in our genes. This is where friends come in! Remember I said that one of the aspects of sex is giving and receiving pleasure? You are my friend, and I gave you pleasure last night! I also got pleasure. Neither of us is hurt, and I don't think there was any permanent change, You were sexless! Last night you discovered an aspect of sexuality you did not know existed!

There was silence for a few minutes as John absorbed the contents of Tom's monologue. He then asked: "What now?"

Tom said: " This afternoon you get to fuck me, then we have dinner and you get your surprise!"
