What Eye Can See

I still remember waiting for the right time to remove the blindfolds around my eyes. Why do I have blindfolds, you ask? Well, I had some kind of cornea or something surgery on them. I was blind as a bat since I was kid; actually I was born like that, I think. It didn't affect my personality though. Even though I was blind, I had some great friends. I couldn't see them, but they stayed close to me as we grew up. They were always there for me, through the hard times and everything. If they weren't there, I don't know what I would do with my life.

Speaking of gone, my parents were always working so I never really get to see them much. Like I COULD see them hehe, but what I meant was that they were barely there for me. I doubt my dad was even there when I was born. They were just a bunch of workaholics. It bugs me sometimes, but what could I do about it. I was stuck home all the time and couldn't go outside because of the `dangers' of the unknown world around me. But soon when the blindfold comes off, I would be able to see again and I couldn't wait. I really wondered what the world would look like? Are things like the way people say they were? They said it was beautiful and it was a shame I couldn't see it.

Anyway, my friends were at my room with me as I waited for the damn doctor to come in. What was taking him so long? "Yo Justin, what do you think you are going to see when you get your vision back? Like, do you have any idea what everything is going to be like?"

"I don't know . . . to tell you truth." I told Dave.

"So you have to touch stuff to know what you're holding, right?" Steph asked.

"I guess. I'm going to have to do that. There should be like a psychologist to help me though. He's going to show me different objects with my vision and not by my feeling of hand." I responded.

"You know what? We're going to take you out and explore the world that YOU never saw yet and have a kickass time doing it!" Dave said excitedly. I smiled and hoped that I would. That's when I heard footsteps coming into my room. It was the doctor! I was soo excited.

"This is Justin right?" The doctor asked.

"Yup."

"Now I'm going to remove your blindfolds. You are going to feel some pain on your eyes, but that's normal."

"Ok." I responded quickly; I had enough chitchat and I wanted these things off me right now.

Slowly and I MEAN slowly the doctor removed the blindfolds around my eyes. As he took them off I really did feel some pain on my eyes. It felt better to close them. When the doctor was done I still had my eyes closed.

"Justin, you can open your eyes now." Steph told me. I tried, but the more I opened them; the more it hurt. But I was so damn close to finally seeing; I couldn't give up. I forced my eyes to open and at first I saw a quick flash of everything, but it was too blurry and bright. I tried again. I saw things I never saw before. Everything to me was so . . . new. There were stuff in the room that I never knew even existed there. In front of me, there was an object-I can see it- but I don't know what it WAS.

"Justin, it's ok. If you don't know what it is, you can use your hands to find out what you're seeing." The doctor said pointing at the object.

"Oh . . . ok." I was pretty shocked with all this, but I stretched my hand out anyway and grabbed it.

"It's . . .it's a can." I smiled.

"OMG!!!" My friends said in union and gave me a hug.

"Congratulations, this is the first step to seeing." The doctor extended his hand and I shook it.

I was still amazed at what the hand in front of me `WAS' at the time hehe. Come to think of it, I felt like I was a new person. Everything to me was so new and fresh. You could say my life has started then.

It was morning and the sun was shining. But this time I CAN SEE IT! What else do I need to make my day any more special? It's almost a month since my therapy and I'm making great progress with it. I could see an object and know what it was now without the need of touching it.

I never noticed that my room was so empty before. Maybe I should do some redecorating with Steph and Dave later. Mom called me down for breakfast. She was cheery as ever seeing me coming down without any effort. Dad was reading his newspaper getting ready for work.

"Honey you want some breakfast?" Mom asked.

"Sure."

Mom called out our Spanish maid to make me some breakfast. I felt bad that someone else was serving me breakfast because it was ok before when I was blind, but now I wanted be more independent. But Mom didn't want me to make breakfast. She was too worried about me burning the house down. Pshh like that was ever going to happen.

As I walked out the house Dave met me at the bus stop. It was still weird being able to do everything by myself, but I liked it. I felt more in control with my life. "Hey! You know, it's weird seeing you without that stick you use to hold." Dave said walking around acting like blind man.

"Dude!" I shoved him playfully for being such a jackass. "Just because I can see now, doesn't mean you can make fun of blind people."

"Haha you know I love yah and I'm just kidding." He said wrapping his friendly arm over my shoulder as we walked into the bus.

"Hey beautiful!" I greeted Steph with a warm hug when I saw her in the bus.

"Hehe your such a flirt now a days." She shoved me into a seat so we can both sit next to each other.

"What about me?" Dave asked with his puppy eyed look.

"Awww come here baby." Steph welcomed him to our seat with open arms.

We were still in the bus and we sat in a two seater. So it was kinda tight. Still, Steph let Dave sit in her lap. Now we were squished.

"Haha GOD, DAVE MOVE YOUR FAT ASS!" I yelled out.

"Well, me and Steph both think it's a nice ass. Is that right Steph?" Dave asked with a crooked smile.

Steph gave Dave a quick slap on the ass. Haha it was all fun and games for a while. We were such a weird group of friends. I noticed they were getting closer then what I was used to. I don't know, but both of them were looking at each other funny. No-not just looking- they were STARING. What were they doing? This thing that they were doing got me boggled.

Their lips met and I saw both of them close their eyes. Steph and Dave were breathing a little hard like they were running out of air. I wonder if this was called, "kissing?" I asked. Both of them broke their lip lock instantly and looked me in shock like they didn't know I was there. Or maybe they were just lost in the moment.

"OO Justin OMG I'm sorry." Steph said with a look discomfort. She got up when the bus arrived at our school and went out of their as quickly possible.

"Yes it was." Dave said with a dreamy daze.

"Yes it was?" I asked with a confused look.

"THAT my friend . . . was a kiss." He said with a sigh and walked me into school.

People in school still gave me weird faces. Not like hatefully looks, but confused looks like, "weren't you blind a minute ago?" But other than that, people around me were real supportive and friendly to me. Steph said it was because I was hot, but I don't know about that. I don't see myself like that anyway.

I was getting my stuff ready from my locker when I heard a familiar voice saying my name from behind me. "Justin?" The stranger asked. I turned around to see who was talking to me. My jaw dropped when I first laid eyes on him; I couldn't even breathe at the moment. There was a bunch of butterflies in my stomach. I never saw anybody this beautiful before.

But the weird thing is . . . I really liked. "It's me Billy."

"Billy?"

"Don't you remember me?"

"OMG! Billy! BILLY!" I said with a lot enthusiasm and gave him a big hug.

"Haha what happen to your stick?"

"Well . . ." I began and told him the long story about my surgery and everything.

He was real surprised about what I told him. I haven't heard from Billy for a year. We were great friends too. He was the fourth person in our group of friends that we had. Even though I was blind back then we were inseparable. I missed him a lot. And well . . . now that I can see him he was . . . attractive to me. Is that right though? I thought only girls and boys were allowed to fall in love.

"You look good." I told him while I was staring into his eyes. Was he blushing?

"Hehe thanks."

"Now that I can see, I never noticed that you were this beautiful before?" After I said that he was kind of shocked. Did I say something wrong? I hope I didn't because I wanted to be great friends like we use to be when were kids and maybe a little more now.

"Wha . . . What?" He asked with a confused look.

I don't know; I really couldn't stop looking at his beautiful eyes. They were so blue that I was lost in them. Billy came closer to me. Suddenly I was stuck; I couldn't move or do anything and the world around us vanished. Nothing mattered to me at that moment as Billy came closer. Suddenly he stopped right in front of my lips. Then it all hit me, I'm still in school and Billy was about to speak.

"Justin are you . . .?" Billy started off with his question.

I hope you like this story so far. Sorry about the suspense, but I really wanted to know how you feel bout this piece. It took me a while because this to me is more of an art then a story. I really hope you like and tell me if you want more.
