Chapter #5

The wind had started picking up when we left our station and the water was slightly choppy. There was a smell of rain and the clouds had thickened. The windsock on the Yard Office roof was blowing straight out indicating a pretty stiff off shore breeze making docking a little tricky.

Woody was standing amidships where he could bring the spring line aboard He wasn't wearing his white hat but I wasn't worried about that. Our berth was on the downwind side and the off shore breeze wasn't going to be very helpful in getting the boat up to the dock.

"Woody." I called out. "Get a heaving line and have it standing by in case we need it. This breeze is going to make it a little rough docking."

I didn't have time to check on him but he was pretty savvy. Glancing aft I saw Parker standing outside of the engine room hatch instead of standing by down below.

"Parker, get your ass down by your engines." I hollered making a quick mental note to jump his ass after we were safely moored.

We were only making 5 knots headway and I could see we were going to have a hard time at that speed. Kicking the revs up to 7 knots helped and I breathed a little easier when the bow started swinging too starboard (right). Pearson and another seaman were standing by on the pier and I heard Woody call out to him.

"Pearson, I might need to use a heaving line for the spring so watch for it."

"Just standby with that line Woody, I might be able to get us in close enough you won't need it." I called out.

I reversed the bow swing at the same time we reached the end of the pier. Spinning the help hard to starboard, I dropped the port(left) engine to idle and while watching the stern I kicked the starboard engine full ahead when the outboard swing stopped and with a quick flip of both engine controls I reversed starboard and kicked port full ahead. The stern swung too port and just as the boat touched the pier I idled both engines hollering "Now Woody, grab the line." I had one hand hovering over the port engine throttle waiting for him and when he called back that the spring line was fastened, I pushed the throttle ahead slow holding the boat against the pier while Woody, Pearson and the other seaman fastened the bow and stern lines. When I saw the lines were in place, I kicked the port engine into idle and switched off. When the engines died I jumped down on deck looking down channel.

The 647 boat was passing the outer turn buoy and from the lack of a bow wave I could tell Clayton, her skipper, was planing and not reducing speed.

"Pearson." I called.

"Yeah Steve. Hey that was real pretty the way you brought her in."

"Who's that with you?"

"New man Steve, he reported in after you went downriver this morning."

"Where are the 647 line handlers?"

"It's after liberty call and the Chief let everyone go. He kept White and me here until the night crew comes down from chow."

"Take him with you and get over on 647's pier. Clayton is coming in too fast."

"Want me to go with them Steve." Woody said from behind me.

"Yeah, just to be on the safe side and you guys be careful. Clayton is on the downwind side like us and he gets a little rattled when he can't get in close."

Woody jumped over on the pier and I went back up to the pilothouse. Holding my binoculars with one hand and the radio microphone with the other I watched Clayton skimming up the channel riding the boats wake swell.

"647, there's about a 10 or 15 knot steady offshore wind blowing across the basin."

"Thanks Steve, I can see the windsock. Are the line handlers standing by?"

Just as I was going to answer, the radio crackled and a gruff voice spoke. "Cut your speed 647 or your wake swell will drive you into the pier. There's a crew waiting for you at your pier."

"Aye, aye Sir." Clayton answered.

Recognizing the Yard Commanders voice. I put my microphone back in its storage slot. Commander Longman would watch Clayton until he was tied up.

"Clayton better be careful Steve. Remember the last time he hit the seawall coming in too fast? Cost him a stripe."

"Yeah Parker, I remember. What are you still doing on board?" I said, watching Clayton's approach.

"You said you wanted to check the engine room." He answered a little sullenly.

I lowered my glasses looking at Parker. "I'll check it after the 647 is docked Parker. You can go ashore after you bring me the logbooks. And Parker, remember what we were talking about earlier today?"

"Yeah, what about it?" "I don't want to hear it again unless you can prove what you are saying. Do we understand each other or do I have to make it an order and let the Chief know what we were talking about."

"No need for that Steve, I was just shooting my mouth off. I'll get the log books."

"Don't shoot it off again." I said lifting the glasses to my eyes.

Any good coxswain should know what a "wake swell" is, a thick roll of water that follows behind a boat at full speed. When a boats speed is cut from full ahead to idle, the swell will follow lifting and rolling under the boat. Just as the swell lifts the stern you kick the engines into full ahead speed and ride the roll, it's a lot like surfing. The speed of the boat combined with the speed of the rolling water allows the boats screws(propellers) to bite deeper and it creates a skimming effect. It can be tricky to handle and Clayton should know better than use the maneuver in confined waters. His boat had rammed into a seawall when he cut his speed late once before.

I could see the sudden creamy froth at the bow of his boat when he cut his speed but I followed the rolling swell with my glasses. At low tide he had created a thick swell and I braced myself as it lifted my boat causing the mooring lines to snap taut. "Damn Clayton, you're a fool." I muttered.

After my boat settled down I ran too the 647 pier where the crew I had sent was waiting but no one else. "Shit." I growled out loud. "Where is everybody?"

The 648 boat was bobbing like a cork at its pier. Her lines were holding but I could hear the other smaller boats groaning and crashing against their piers as the swell rolled down the seawall.

Clayton was have a hard time getting his boat lined up with the pier and the offshore wind wasn't helping. Every time he tried angling his boat, the wind pushed him away. Until he got the bow close enough to get a line over we could only watch.

It took a good half an hour before Clayton finally got his boat to where Jackson, his deck hand, could throw us a line. The worst was when Clayton increased his speed and the 647 shot ahead aiming for the center of the pier and we only had his bowline in hand.

Pearson and Woody were running up the pier with the line as Jackson fed it out. I heard the boats engines reverse but his forward momentum was to fast.

"Woody, Pearson" I hollered. "Bring that line back here, she's coming in too fast. Use the spring line cleat."

The threatening rain started coming down making things worse. Woody and Pearson threw a few quick turns around the cleat and just in time, the line snapped as taut as a violin bowstring pulling the bow into the pier.

"Clayton." I hollered. "Use you starboard engine and get your stern in closer so we can get the spring line."

We could see he was frustrated from the way he was moving around in the pilothouse. I knew he had heard me when the stern slowly swung in to the pier.

"Woody, feed that bow line out as she swings."

Using the starboard engine and feeding the bowline out the stern swung in and Jackson threw us the spring line. The new man helped me tie it to one of the pier pilings. Clayton jumped down on deck from the pilothouse but I ordered him back to his station.

"Get you ass up in that pilot house until we get this boat tied up Clayton. Jackson, walk that stern line up here. Pearson, hold that line tight but don't belay it. Woody, give me a hand here."

I'd forgotten about the new man standing behind me. "What's your name, I didn't catch it?"

"White sir." He said wide-eyed and scared too death.

"Give Pearson a hand with his line."

"Yes sir."

"Jackson, what in hell are you doing?"

"I'm trying to get the stern line too you but the deck is slippery." I had forgotten the rain in the excitement of trying to get Clayton's boat tied up. It was coming down in sheets blown by the wind. For a brief moment I was going to tell Woody to jump on board and help Jackson but I hollered, "Hook that line over your shoulder and use the hand lines Jackson."

Following my instructions he finally managed to get the line to where Woody and I were waiting. I could see the boy was scared when I looked at him. After we secured the stern line to another piling I hooked my hand under Woody's web belt.

"Jackson, reach over and help Woody on board." I said looking at Woody. He was wondering what I was doing. "When you get on board Joey, take Jackson to the stern and as the boat moves forward pull that line in. Be careful back there, the deck is slippery from this rain. I don't want you falling overboard or getting hurt."

Jackson grabbed Woody's wrist and I held him by his belt as he pulled him on board.

"Pearson, standby. Clayton, put her in idle and we'll walk her on in and keep your wheel hard too starboard." I hollered.

I knew the boat would move ahead from the positive rotation of the screws. We could hold her in position and shift the lines as she moved with the wind helping us by blowing in from her starboard side. With Woody and Jackson working the stern line and Pearson and White on the bow line as she moved there wasn't any danger she might break loose as long as the lines were kept taut. It took about 15 minutes and we had the lines where they should be and I told Clayton to cut his engines.

With the boat secured, Clayton left the pilothouse coming to where I was standing with the other men.

"Damn Lewis. I sure was lucky you got in ahead of me." He said nervously.

"Woody, Pearson, White. Check the small craft and make sure their lines are secure. They were rocking like hell from the 647's swell. Jackson, make sure your lines are secure before you come ashore." I said calmer then I felt.

When they had left I turned to Clayton. "Luck's ass Clayton, you are a fucking idiot."

"But. . . . Lewis!!" He stammered.

"No buts, keep your mouth shut. You know you don't plane when you are in the inner channel and you cut your speed too 5 knots at the turn buoy. There are 5 patrol boats and 11 small craft in the basin and planing like you were creates a swell that follows your boat. That swell don't stop when you cut your speed, it keeps right on rolling until it hits the seawall or rolls up on the beach. Every boat in this basin, including mine, were thrown around like corks from your stupidity. I should put you on report and let the Skipper decide what to do with you for violating standing orders, his orders. One damn thing is for sure Clayton; you won't take another boat out as long as I am the leading petty officer of the boat crews. You got that?"

"Lewis, I'm sorry but I was trying to get in before the weather got any worse."

"That is no excuse Petty Officer Clayton." A gruff voice said from behind me.

Turning around we saw Commander Longman.

"Sorry sir, I didn't know you were there." I said.

"How could you in this weather and it's getting worse. I saw your crew checking the other boats but you better have them double up. The forecast is for heavy winds and rain with a higher then normal tide. Do you know where Chief Martin and the rest of the yard crew are?"

"No sir. Pearson told me that he had let the crew go early and kept him and a new man here until the regular night crew came on duty."

"So I see." He said. "Make sure those lines are doubled Lewis and Clayton, you report to my office at 1000 hours Monday morning. Good work Lewis. You and your men get out of those wet clothes as soon as you can."

"Aye, aye Sir, will do." I said. "Clayton, get up too the Yard Shack and check with the barracks. That crew should be on its way. Make sure you talk with the Master at Arms and let him know we're running late so we can eat."

While we were checking boat lines, the relief crew arrived. With the extra manpower it didn't take long and the job was finished. The rain had slackened some but not the wind.

The yard carryall was waiting to take us too the barracks and I was happy to feel the heater blowing when we boarded. Clayton and Jackson were already sitting in one of the front seats with their heads together and Pearson and White in the other. Woody and I sat together and I felt him shiver from being soaked. I squeezed his thigh and he looked at me.

"When we get in the barracks, you get out of those wet clothes and take a hot shower." I whispered.

"What about chow Lewis? I'm wet and hungry."

"You do what I told you, I'll take care of chow." I said looking at the other men in the truck.

"When we get to the barracks, you guys get hot showers. Clayton, did you tell the Master at Arms we would be late?"

"Yeah, he said they would keep one line open but they didn't want to be there all night."

"Then don't take any longer than you have to." I said seeing Pearson glance back at me grinning and thinking about what an asshole Grissom could be when it came to helping someone out. He was given the job of running the barracks and mess hall because he wasn't very good at anything except sitting on his ass and brown nosing. It was another thing I didn't like but lived with. The Navy seemed to have trouble getting rid of jerks but ass kissers usually made out okay.

Woody headed for his locker as soon as we were in the barracks, his bunk and locker was three down from mine. He was shivering and his wet clothes stuck to his body making it hard to get them off. When he finally got them off, he hugged himself before opening his locker. Getting a towel out, he rubbed his body vigorously trying to get his blood flowing faster. His sandy blond hair was darker from being wet and his cock swung like a clock pendulum swelling slightly.

"Why don't you get in a hot shower Woody?" I said feeling a surge in my loins watching him.

"I will in a minute. Rubbing down with the towel feels good, try it." He said taking his soap kit from his locker, looking at me with a twinkle in his eyes, moving closer and wrapping the towel around his waist.

The towel only emphasized the bulge in his crotch and when he groped his cock I growled softly.

"Get in the shower Joey."

"Are we still going on liberty?" He whispered.

"Not if you don't stop wasting time, move."

"Yes sir." He said giggling as he moved past me.

The shower room had 6 tiled stalls. Pearson and the new kid, White, were in two of them across from each other. Both of them turned around facing the back of the stalls when I walked in and thoughts of what Parker had said early about Pearson flashed through my mind. I knew what Pearson looked like, leanly muscled, dark hair with broad shoulders, small waist and a nice butt. The new kid was built about the same as Woody from the back except his hair was pure blond. Maybe Parker was right about Pearson.

Woody was standing under the hot shower spray facing the back wall of one of the stalls at the back of the room, steam billowing up around him from the hot water.

Taking the stall across from his, I turned the water on setting it as hot as I could stand it so I could get the chill out of my body. Letting the spray hit my chest I soaped down feeling the heat of the water spread over me. Moving my hands down over my chest and stomach into my crotch, I lifted my balls upwards and squeezed them. Skinning the foreskin back on my cock the sharp sting of the hot water hitting the exposed head caused a trembling sensation that made me feel weak in the knees.

Woody had turned around facing me and out of the corner of my eye I could see him squeezing his balls with one hand and slowly stroking his cock with the other. Turning my head away from the water I watched, my cock growing harder. His body glistened from the water flowing over him and his blue eyes gleamed. Smiling, he spread his legs and leaned backwards thrusting his huge cock at me stroking it, teasing and playing like an erotic imp would. His eyes were focused on my moving hand. I was close to a climax when Pearson called out.

"Hey Woody, you going on liberty?" He asked breaking the euphoric mood we had conjured up between us.

"Yeah." He called back, "Are you?"

"Me and White are going to Fredericksburg, you wanna come along?"

"Can't." He said looking at me, grinning. "I got a date in Waldorf."

Both of us had gone soft and we stood under the water looking across at each other. For some damn reason I couldn't fathom, Woody seemed to be enjoying himself and he winked at me. "Whatcha going to do in Fredericksburg Pearson?"

"Awwwww not much, just hang. White hasn't been there and its cheaper then going to D.C. or Colonial Beach. Who you got a date with, someone I know?"

"I don't think you do, I met her on the bus. She lives in Waldorf. She's going to meet me at that diner on 301. If I had a car it would be easier but I'll take the base bus."

"Yeah, that sucks. Instead of the bus we can give you a ride out too the diner if you want."

Woody saw me shaking my head before he answered. "Thanks for the offer. She won't be there until sometime around 2200(10PM) so I'll catch the late bus."

"Okay, catch you later. Have fun."

I almost exploded from holding my breath for so long and Woody looked like he was going to choke from not laughing. When the door closed, I exhaled.

"Damn Joey, you like playing with fire don't you."

"No, just throwing out a red herring. He didn't mean it, it was all for your benefit. Pearson will suck that kids dick before they get to where ever they are going." He said turning his shower off and starting to dry off.

"He'll what?" I spluttered.

Woody moved closer to my stall. "Jeez Steve, Pearson is as gay as you and me. You didn't know that? I knew it the first time I took a shower and he kept showing me his cock in the shower stall across from me. Every time I showered he was in here."

"I never thought about him like that. He always seemed like some prissy assed kid trying to suck up and act like a big shot ever since he got his striker badge." I said, drying off.

"He isn't a bad kid when you get to know him Steve. His attitude is a front for how he feels but he better cool it, he don't hide'em that well. Are we going to eat before we go? I don't really wanna put my undress uniform on just to eat and then change again into civvies. We can eat at the Diner if you want."

"Good idea but you better get out of here before Pearson or someone else starts thinking we have been in here too long. We can get something at the diner. Be sure and wear your raincoat, one soaking today is enough."

Wrapping his towel around his waist again with less of a bulge as before but still noticeable he gave me a quick peck on the cheek and dodged my towel snapping at his tight buns.

"Damn, maybe Parker was right." I thought after Woody left. Maybe me chewing his ass out would be of some help if Woody was right about Pearson not hiding his feelings very well.

After a few minutes, I followed Woody out of the shower room and bumped into Pearson and White.

"Damn Steve, you just getting finished showering? You'll shrivel up like a prune." Pearson said, grinning.

"The hot water felt good after getting soaked by that cold rain and I've never had any trouble with shriveling up. I heard you telling Woody you and White are going to Fredericksburg. Don't let Pearson lead you astray White, he might get you in trouble."

"If it's the right kind of trouble it'll be okay Boats." He said shyly looking at Pearson.

"Just be careful. Some of the boys up there don't like sailors messing with the girls in the college."

"No problem Steve. You headed out?" Pearson said.

"Yep, going to see what D.C. has to offer. I need to relax. You guys wear me out. See ya later." I said moving away.

Woody was almost dressed when I got to my locker. He was wearing a pair of tight Levi jeans, a powder blue UNC sweat shirt and a pair of what looked like mountain climbing boots.

"Take a change of clothes Joey and your ditty bag."

"Already packed." He said indicating and athletic bag on the floor.

"And your raincoat?"

"You sound just like my mother, always fussing." He said grinning, pulling his raincoat from his locker and putting it on.

"Never mind the raincoat. Do you have a jacket?" I said changing my mind about picking him up at the diner.

"Yeah, I've got a windbreaker. Why?"

"Wear it, you won't need a raincoat in the car."

"You sure Steve, what if someone sees us leaving together?" He said softly, looking around.

"So what? I'm just giving you a lift if anyone says anything." I said closing my locker door.

"Okay." He replied, replacing his raincoat and pulling out a dark blue jacket.

The rain had increased and we had to run to where my car was parked and even running we were almost as wet as we had been earlier.

"Damn Joey, you would have gotten soaked by the time you walked too the main gate."

"Tell me about it." He said shaking the water from his hair and sitting against the door. "It's raining harder than it was before."

He was right. It was raining harder then it had been. When we got to the gate, the guard didn't come out, he just waved us through.

We were no sooner outside the gate when he slid across the seat snuggling close and pushing one hand between my legs squeezing the inside of my thigh. "You keep that up and I'm going to have a big problem." I said breathing in deeply.

"No bigger then mine." He said softly, kissing my neck and pulling my hand down from the steering wheel.

His cock felt like a steel rod stretching down the inside his thigh and I could feel the heat through his damp jeans.

"Jesus Joey, aren't you wearing skivvies?"

"Never do off base." He said seductively, squeezing my now very hard cock. "If you didn't have any on, I'd suck you off right now."

"You horny imp. Get a guy all hot and bothered and use an excuse like that. Cock teasers do that."

"I'm not teasing. Pull in the rest stop and I'll show you if you can't wait until we get to the motel. I like playing with you, that's all. Besides, Pearson and White might be there."

"Do you really think they would?"

"It wouldn't surprise me, wanna find out." He said giggling.

"Not really and I don't want you trying to find out if Pearson is gay."

"He's not my type Steve. I like men not boys younger then me."

"He isn't that much younger then you are and I'm not that much older. Didn't you tell me you are almost 19?" I said turning off on Rt.17.

"Pearson's 18. He tried joining before he was 17 so he would be out before he was 21 but his parents wouldn't sign for him.

"So you both are 18."

"I'll be 19 in two weeks. You forgot to stop at the diner."

"Shit, you got me hot and I wasn't paying any attention. We can stop at a new store up ahead called 7-ll. We can pickup some beer and stuff for sandwiches. What kind of beer do you like?"

"Pabst Blue Ribbon or anything as long as it's cold."

The 7-11 store was a couple of miles before we reached the motel and it only took a few minutes to get the beer some chips and the stuff we needed for sandwiches.

It was still raining when we reached the motel but the wind had died down. The motel was small and called the Cavalier. Some guys called it the Gay Cavalier since it was owned and operated by two gay guys. I'd met one of them in the Rivershore Casino. He told me his name was Carl and he ran a motel just outside of town but he didn't mention that he had a lover and it was as close as I ever came to being involved in a three-way. One on one was fine but two on one did not excite me that much. Carl and Evan both were great in bed and Carl was at the desk when I opened the door with Woody behind me.

Carl was 6'4" and slim but not skinny. He had auburn hair and green eyes. Evan, his lover, was 6", thick muscled with blond hair and gray eyes. They both were good looking as hell.

Carl turned around from the motel switchboard as we walked in.

"Hey Steve." He exclaimed getting up. "What in hell brings you out on a night like this?" He said looking past me at Woody.

"You have to ask that Carl? I've missed you & Evan." I answered playfully.

"Yeah, I bet you have. Who's your friend?"

"Joe Woodson. Joey, Carl Ingram and old friend."

"Not that old Steve. Hi Joe, call me Carl. I don't use Ingram since I left the Army." Carl said extending his hand.

Woody shook Carl's hand but only nodded looking at me with a glint in his eyes.

"Room #15 on the back Steve." Carl said handing me a key. "Evan will be back in the morning from Charlotte. How about you and Joe having breakfast with us?"

"Sure, give us a call when you're ready. Got a couple of extra towels?"

"Sure. I'll fill our the registration card, same address for the both of you?" He said grinning and glancing at Woody, handing him the towels.

It was starting to look like it was never going to stop raining and running the short distance from the car we both were wet again. I was beginning to believe what Pearson said about shriveling up from being wet so much.

When I closed and locked the door Woody put his arms around me nuzzling the back of my neck with his nose. "Do you want some help getting out of those wet clothes?" He whispered pressing soft warm lips against the nape of my neck.

"Why don't we help each other?" I said twisting around in his arms.
