The Inheritance Clause - 7

Adam went into the bathroom. He began to brush his teeth as he watched Dawson dry off in the reflection of the mirror. The boys kept glancing at each other. Dawson finished drying off. He wrapped his towel around himself and went over to Adam. He placed a hand on his bare shoulder.

"Are you going to be alright with this?" Dawson asked.

Adam stopped brushing. He had foam all around his mouth. He spit into the sink, so he could talk.

"Alright with what? Sorting through my feelings for my fiance while a hot stud, who I know wants me just as much as I want him, flaunts himself in front of me?" Adam replied sarcastically, "Oh, sure... of course... I'm all right with that."

"Good," said Dawson, as he grinned, knowing Adam was being sarcastic.

"Can I ask you something? In all seriousness..." Adam said as he turned toward Dawson.

"Of course," Dawson said.

"If I do decide to break it off with Vickie and want to have a relationship with you, what then?" Adam asked.

"Hmmm..." Dawson responded.

He removed his hand from Adam's back. He turned so he was leaning his butt against the sink. He folded his arms in front of himself. He turned and faced Adam.

"Well, I don't know. I think we would have to make sure we both want the same things. Make sure we both know what we'd be getting ourselves into..." Dawson said.

Adam nodded as he considered what Dawson said.

"While I'm working through all of this, can we still hug?" Adam said as he leaned on the sink and looked at Dawson.

"I think so. As long as it's just a hug..." Dawson replied.

"What about kissing?" Adam asked hopefully.

"I don't think that's a good idea," Dawson said.

Adam lowered his head as he leaned against the sink.

"But it felt so good," Adam whispered loud enough for Dawson to hear.

"It did," Dawson said as he turned and put a hand on Adam's shoulder again, "but sex should be the natural result of a solid relationship, not the basis for one."

Adam nodded because he knew Dawson was right.

"There you go again, saying wise things like my granddad," Adam said.

"C'mere," Dawson said as he held out his arms.

Adam turned and they hugged. Their naked chests connected as they embraced.

"This feels so good," Adam said as he embraced Dawson tighter.

"Mmmm," Dawson replied.

They separated and Adam took in a deep breath and sighed. He turned and went back to brushing. Dawson turned and went into his room. The boys got dressed. Dawson primped his hair at the bathroom mirror as Adam picked out his shoes. They left through Dawson's room and went down to the dining room.

Krantz was ready for them when they walked in. Without asking, he poured coffee for both of them.

"Orange juice?" Krantz said to Dawson.

"Yes, please," Dawson said to Krantz.

"And cranberry juice for you?" Krantz said to Adam.

"That would be great, Krantz," said Adam as he picked up an orange and a muffin from the service table.

Dawson grabbed a muffin and sat down. As the boys prepared their coffees, Krantz placed their juices on the table. He turned and left the dining room. Dawson split the warm muffin in half to reveal it was blueberry. Dawson broke off a piece and popped it into his mouth. He was enjoying his muffin when Adam reached over and touched Dawson's arm.

"If there's time today, I want to continue our swim lessons," Adam said.

"Sure," Dawson said after swallowing his mouthful of muffin, "we should do it every day until you're comfortable swimming in the lake."

"How long do you think that will take?" asked Adam.

Dawson put his other hand over Adam's. He began gently rubbing his thumb on Adam's fingers.

"Given how well you did yesterday, I'd say you'll be swimming in the lake in a few days," Dawson said.

"Really? You think?" Adam said with an eager smile.

"I do," Dawson said.

He patted Adam's hand and then pulled his hand back. Adam rubbed Dawson's arm and then pulled his hand back, too. The boys ate in silence. At one point, Dawson got up and grabbed the menu form and binder. The boys bantered back and forth, smiling and laughing, as they filled in the menu for dinner. Dawson got up to get another muffin. Just then, Krantz and Niven came in.

"Has there been any word from Carmen?" Dawson asked as he handed the dinner menu to Niven.

"Not yet this morning," Krantz said.

"You have our marching orders for the day then?" Adam said as he looked down and peeled his orange.

"Yes, you have one thing for today. Mr. Jameson's music collection is in the ballroom. You are to go through the collection and each of you are to select three songs. You will play the songs in the ballroom and tell the other why you selected it," Niven said.

"Seriously?" Adam said as he looked up from peeling his orange, "what a strange thing to ask us to do."

"Mmm," Dawson agreed as he thought about it while sitting back down.

Then a thought occurred to him.

"Wait," Dawson said, "How will you know if we complete the task?"

"Oh, we'll be able to hear the music from anywhere on the first floor and in the east wing of the second floor," Krantz explained.

"A couple other things..." Krantz said, "Given that your task is indoors, I scheduled for the gardeners to come and do some landscaping this afternoon. Please don't go outside after lunch."

"We can swim after breakfast," Adam said to Dawson.

Dawson wasn't listening. He was still thinking about their music task.

"Dawson..." Adam said.

"Huh? Oh, sorry, yeah. That works," Dawson said as Adam stared at him with a curious look.

"Also, the lumber and hardware you need for the fence should be delivered this afternoon. But the cement equipment won't be here for a couple days," Krantz continued, "so you can wait on repairing the fence until then."

Both boys nodded.

"We still have the artwork to do, too," said Adam.

Niven nodded.

"That's it. Anything else you need?" Krantz asked.

Adam looked at Dawson and then at Niven and Krantz.

"Um... Should we go through my granddad's room at some point?" Adam asked.

Niven and Krantz looked at each other.

"We were hesitant to do anything to the rooms in the house. We weren't sure if there would be one of the tasks telling you what to do with them, including the master bedroom," Niven said.

"Ah, that makes sense. I guess there's no rush, then," Adam said.

"I can serve lunch in the dining room shortly after noon, if that's ok with you," said Niven.

"That will work. Thanks, Niven," Adam said.

Niven and Krantz left the room. Adam looked at Dawson who was still thinking.

"What?" Adam said to Dawson.

"Hmm?" Dawson asked, confused.

"What did you figure out?" Adam asked.

"Nothing. I was thinking about these tasks we've been given. Why would your granddad ask us to play our favorite songs and explain them?" Dawson wondered.

"Actually, it wasn't our favorite songs. The direction was 'select three songs'. We can pick them for any reason," Adam said.

"Ok, same difference... Why ask us to do that?" Dawson mused.

"I don't know. Granddad did like listening to music. Maybe he wanted to pass on his love of music to us?" Adam replied.

"Maybe..." Dawson said.

The boys finished eating and sat for a while in silence, sipping their coffees. Finally, Dawson spoke.

"Let's go up and change," Dawson said.

"Mmm," Adam said as he stood up.

The boys went upstairs and changed into swim trunks and sandals. Neither of them bothered with a shirt. Dawson grabbed one of the bucket hats and put it on. When Adam was ready he came into Dawson's room. He adjusted Dawson's bucket hat. They smiled at each other, then the boys headed downstairs.

"I want to try getting into the pool on my own," Adam said with confidence as they ascended the staircase.

"Ok, I'll be right next to you if you need me," said Dawson.

"I know," said Adam.

The boys continued in silence as Adam thought about what it would be like for Dawson to always be there next to him. It was a comforting feeling.

When they got to the pool, the boys slipped off their sandals.

"We're going to stay near the wall again, so you can go in that side. Whenever you're ready," Dawson said as he gestured toward the wall.

Adam grabbed the handrail and stepped down the steps until he was at the wall where he was the day before. He got a big smile on his face when he got to the spot and hung onto the wall. Dawson joined him, also smiling.

"Nice," Dawson said under his breath, but it was loud enough that Adam heard him.

"Ok, let's review. What's the one thing to remember?" Dawson asked.

"Slow. Always go slow," said Adam.

"Good. Let's do some breathing again before we try something new," Dawson said.

Without prompting, Adam began breathing while holding the wall and dunking his head. After a few times, he let go of the wall and was dunking his head while exhaling without holding onto anything. When he stopped, he came up out of the water and swiped his hand over his face. He opened his eyes and Dawson was smiling at him.

"Wow, that was great," Dawson said.

Adam smiled.

"Ok, now, you're going to learn how to tread water. That's where you use your arms and legs to stay afloat," Dawson said.

Adam nodded.

"I'm going to show you how to do the arms part first. Then you can try," Dawson said.

Dawson stood up in the pool so his torso was mostly out of the water. He began moving his arms forward and backward, slowly.

"You move your arms like this. Slowly... If at any time your head goes under the water, you exhale like we already learned. And if you feel like you can't stay above the water, just stand up. Got it?" Dawson said.

"Yup," said Adam with a little bit of nervousness.

"I'm going to start by bending my knees until the water is at my neck while I keep moving my arms. Then, I'll lift my feet and see how long I can stay above the water with just my arm movements," Dawson said.

Dawson kept slowly moving his arms as he bent his knees. His arms went into the water. He then lifted his feet. He kept a slow rhythm with his arms. A couple times, his mouth went into the water and he exhaled to make bubbles in the water and stood back up. He did it a couple times. Then he stood up and stopped.

"You ready to try?" Dawson asked.

"Yeah," Adam said nervously.

Adam began moving his arms and then started to bend his knees.

"Slower..." Dawson said.

Adam went slower and then lifted his feet. He managed to stay above the water for a couple arm waves and then his head went under. He blew bubbles in the water and stood up.

"You alright?" Dawson asked as he put a hand on Adam's shoulder.

"Yeah," Adam said, "I want to try again."

Adam tried again and went a little longer. He tried a couple more times until he was able to stay above the water for a few arm motions.

"You're doing great," Dawson said, "now we just need to add leg kicking. Let's hang onto the wall."

Dawson turned and put both hands on the wall. Adam copied him.

"Now, lift your feet, so they're behind you. And with big, long, slow strokes, move your legs back and forth," Dawson said.

Dawson lifted his legs and began to slowly kick his feet. Adam looked at Dawson's legs and copied him. Adam got a smile on his face.

"This is easy," Adam said.

"Yup. And when you combine it with the arm movements, it's enough to keep your head above the water," Dawson said, "Wanna try?"

Dawson let go of the wall and walked out to where the water level was at his neck. He then began to tread water. Adam looked at Dawson with some trepidation. Dawson thought maybe he pushed Adam too far, too fast. Dawson was about to say something when Adam pushed off the wall. He began moving his arms and kicking his legs.

"Slower... Slower... That's it," Dawson said.

Adam began treading water. The look of utter joy on his face was unmistakable. Dawson began smiling.

"You're doing it!" Dawson said.

Dawson took some water into his mouth, getting the brim on the back of his bucket hat wet, and squirted the water out of his mouth so it landed near Adam. They both began laughing.

"Tilt your body a bit and kick toward the wall," Dawson said as he showed Adam.

Adam did and he reached out and grabbed the wall.

"You just swam to the wall!" Dawson said as he grabbed Adam's shoulder.

Adam turned and smiled at Dawson.

"Let's tread water for a while so you can get used it. Then we'll stop for today," Dawson said.

Dawson pushed away from the wall and began treading water. Adam copied him and began treading water facing him. They bantered back and forth, laughing and joking, as they treaded water for about 10 minutes. Adam began to get tired and he moved toward the wall. Dawson met him there and the boys stayed at the wall for a couple minutes. They made their way out of the pool and began to towel off.

"Tomorrow, I'll show you a swim stroke to move through the water," Dawson said.

"Thank you, Dawson. I never imagined I'd be swimming someday," Adam said.

He moved toward Dawson and pulled him into a hug. Adam pulled Dawson close and nestled his head into Dawson's neck.

"Thank you," Adam whispered.

"I'll always have your back, Adam," Dawson said as he felt an erection coming on.

Adam continued to hold onto Dawson.

"Adam..." Dawson said softly as he gently tried to separate from him.

Adam let up and released Dawson from the hug.

"Sorry," Adam said, looking down at the ground, "it just feels right when I hug you."

Dawson grabbed the sides of Adam's biceps.

"Adam, it's ok. But we talked about this. Take some time to figure out where you are with Vickie. I'll be right here when you figure it out. At least for the next 6 months..." Dawson said ending with a chuckle.

Adam chuckled. He had the urge to move in and kiss Dawson, but he knew he shouldn't. So he suppressed it.

Dawson let go of Adam and finished drying off. The boys tossed their towels into the bin and made their way upstairs. They entered Dawson's room together and Adam continued on through the bathroom to his room. Dawson hung the bucket hat onto the handle of the glass sliding doors, so it could dry in the sunlight. Both boys changed. Dawson finished first. He went through the bathroom to Adam's room.

Dawson stood in the bathroom doorway as he watched Adam slip his feet into his casual loafers. When he turned around and saw Dawson, he smiled.

"Hey, I was thinking..." Adam said.

"Hmm?" Dawson said as he leaned against the door jamb.

"You're right about me working through what I want. And I need to do that on my own," Adam said and then paused.

He watched Dawson for a reaction to what he was saying. Dawson listened intently.

"I want to take the next couple hours. Alone. So I can start sorting through my thoughts," Adam said.

He paused to see Dawson's response.

"I think that's a great idea. We can do our own thing for the rest of the morning and then meet up at lunch. We'll do the music thing in the ballroom afterward," Dawson said.

Adam grinned.

"That's what I was thinking," Adam said.

Dawson smiled and nodded. Both boys felt the urge to hug as a way to confirm they were in agreement. Given the circumstances, they both suppressed it.

"I'm going to go hang in the pool room," Adam said as he made his way toward the door.

"Sounds good. I'll go hang in the living room," said Dawson.

"See you at lunch," Adam said.

Dawson watched as Adam left through the bedroom door and closed it. It wasn't lost on Dawson that this was the first time Adam had gone through his own bedroom door since they were shown to the bedrooms by Niven. Up to that point, the boys had entered and exited together through Dawson's bedroom. With just that simple act, Dawson felt a separation from Adam. It seemed small, and silly, but Dawson felt a wave of sadness come over him.

As Adam closed the door to his bedroom, it occurred to him that it was the first time he'd gone through that doorway since Niven showed them to the rooms. He paused, thinking it felt wrong and that he should go back and undo it. But then he thought he was being ridiculous and he dismissed it. He made his way to the pool room.

Dawson went back into his bedroom. He picked up the will packet and headed downstairs to the kitchen. He went to the refrigerator and found a can of ginger ale. He filled a glass with ice and poured the can into it. He made his way to the living room. He propped himself into a half-laying, half-sitting position in the corner of the sectional. He began to read the will.
