Brent's Struggle Chapter 6

"What is wrong?" Linda asked looking at her son over the dinner table. "You are only picking at your food."

"I, um, just am not hungry," Brent said. Brent never seemed to have much of an appetite. It was even worse after his appointments with Dr. Wilson. She made him feel like filth. He hated how she put down Devyn. How she called him "that boy" or "disgusting influence". It all made him feel sick inside. The medication she had prescribed didn't help him at all. After taking it, he would feel a bit queasy.

"Do you feel alright?" Linda asked and placed a cool hand on his forehead.

"Don't baby him so much," Richard told his wife.

"He's too skinny," Linda said sitting back in her chair.

"I had a big lunch," Brent lied. Most of his lunch had gone into the trash. The school food was only half eatable when you had an appetite. When you didn't...well there was no way he would be able to choke it down.

"What are your plans this weekend?" Richard asked.

"Nothing really," Brent said. "I think I'm going to meet some friends Saturday night."

"Are these the same friends you have been going to the movies with?" Richard asked.

"Yeah," Brent lied. "I think we are going to see that new movie coming out Friday."

"I think we need to meet these friends," Richard said. "We need to make sure you are hanging out with the right kind of kids."

"The right kind?" Brent asked looking a question at his father.

"Kids with good families," Richard said.

"Right," Brent said. He knew exactly what his father wanted to make sure. He wanted to be sure Brent wasn't with guys like Cody or Devyn. Guys that might let him be himself and be free.

"I think you should come with me Saturday afternoon," Richard said. "A colleague and I are going to go play golf. He's bringing his son. He is always telling me what a great football player his son is. He works out at the club all the time. Maybe you and he could work out together. He might be able to mentor you.

"What?" Brent said.

"He will be a good influence on you," Richard added. "He is definitely someone you should know. He's an athlete and gets good grades. You two might have even seen each other around. He's a senior and he would be a good person for you to know.

Brent did not want to hang around all afternoon with a jock. Especially a jock that sounded like he also had a brain. He might be a nice guy but it did not sound like they would have anything in common. "I have plans," Brent began.

"You do," Richard said. "You are going to the club with me. You will have fun."

Brent knew he would not have fun. He did not want to hang out with some muscle bound jock. He did not want to work out in the gym with some testosterone Neanderthal. He just wanted to go back to the Movies and maybe, hopefully see the ticket guy again. "Dad I really..." Brent began but was cut off.

"You are going," Richard said. "It is time you hang out with the right kind of people. It is time you had some positive male influences."

Brent knew there was little he could do to change his father's mind. Richard's mind was made up and it seemed Brent`s Saturday afternoon was booked. Brent just hoped they would finish so he could see if the ticket guy was back at the theater.

"Are you about ready?" Richard asked his son Saturday afternoon. "I don't want to keep them waiting."

"Really Dad," Brent began. Brent thought he would try one last time to get out of going to the club. "I don't..."

"Don't start that," Richard said. "You are going. You are going to spend time with an upstanding young man. You need to be around kids who are above average."

Brent wasn't even sure what his father was talking about. Devyn had above average grades. Devyn had done better in most of their classes together. The guy always seemed to have it easier. Maybe being out on his own was the better option.

"I think you are going to have fun," Richard said as they drove to the club. "It has been a while since you have been around our own class of kids. After the firm downsized and I got transferred we gave up a lot and I guess we didn't think about how that would affect you."

"I'm fine Dad," Brent said.

"I want you to be healthy," Richard said. "I think you just need to be around a better class of kid. That Roberts kid and that surfing bum were just losers. You will see as you get older that you need to always keep your eye open for the right kind of people."

Brent wanted to say something. He wanted to defend Devyn and Cody. They had both been great friends and were good guys. His dad had no idea how good the two of them were. Instead of voicing his thoughts and defending his friends he looked out the window and let his dad drone on about how great this kid was and how Brent should pay attention to him. All too soon they were parking at the club and Brent was following his Dad inside. He had not been to the club for a while. Once he and Devyn became friends Brent was spending most of his free time with Devyn and did not have time to come to the club with his dad. Brent never found it that fun. It was always filled with people pretending to be more than they were. Brent hated the fake smiles, the fake laughter and the phoniness of everyone.

"Hi Richard," someone called as they were striding across the lobby.

"Hi Mark," Richard said walking to the man.

Brent could not believe the size of the man. He was six feet and five inches. His shoulders were broad and the guy definitely used the weight room at the club. Brent felt like a little kid next to the man.

"This must be Brent," the guy said.

"Yes," Richard Said. "Brent this is mark."

"Hi Sir," Brent said. "It is nice to meet you. Brent took the hand the man offered. His hand was swallowed up by the man's and the grip was almost painful.

"Oh wow," Mark said. "He has manners."

"Sometimes," Richard said joking with his co-worker.

"My son just went to get changed," mark explained. "We had to come over after a family breakfast.

Brent half listened to the two men talk. He was hoping this kid he was going to be forced to hang out with all afternoon wasn't a giant like his father.

"I can see you hate golf talk as much as Darren," mark said. "My son doesn't like golf at all."

"Um, it just isn't my thing," Brent said.

"I have never been able to get him into playing," Richard said.

"What sports do you play?" mark asked Brent.

"He plays baseball," Richard said.

Brent glanced at his dad. He didn't play baseball. He hadn't played anything since maybe a short time on a little league team years ago.

"Darren likes baseball," mark said, "along with football and soccer."

"What no basket ball?" Brent asked.

"No he's never really gotten into that one," mark said.

Richard shot Brent a look and Brent could definitely see the anger in his father's eyes. Richard hid it quickly. Brent guessed his comment could have been sarcastic but mark had not seemed to take it that way. They talked more about golf and work and Brent could feel himself zoning out again. He glanced out the window and watched a squirrel running back and forth between two trees until Mark's voice brought him back inside. "Here's Darren," mark said.

Brent turned in the direction Mark was looking. The guy coming towards them was definitely built like a jock. The tight blue tank top was stretched over his muscular chest. Likewise the guy's arms were made up with cords of muscles. The snug shorts hugged the boy's basket showing off his equipment. The tan legs were also beefy with solid muscle. Brent was relieved the guy was not as tall as Mark. He was the same height as Brent maybe even an inch shorter. The guy's height probably explained why he wasn't into basketball. Brent tried to remember if he had seen the guy around school and couldn't place him.

"Darren," Mark said pulling the boy up next to him and sliding his arm around the muscular shoulders. "This is Richard and Brent."

"Hello," Darren said and shook hands with Richard. "It is great to meet you."

"You to Darren," Richard said.

"Brent doesn't like golf any more than you do," Mark said.

"It isn't a real sport," Darren said.

"Yes, it is," Mark said.

Brent could tell that this was an ongoing disagreement the two had. He could also tell that it was a running joke between them. To Brent it seemed that Darren and Mark had a good father and son relationship. He and his own dad use to be able to talk and tease each other like that. That part of their relationship disappeared when he and Devyn were caught. His mind flashed back to one of his appointments with Dr. Wilson. He could hear her voice as if he were still right there in her office.

"What this boy did to you is wrong," she said. "He manipulated you into being his friend. He pretended to be something he was not. He tricked you into that nasty act."

"I don't know," Brent had said.

"Look inside yourself," she said. "Wasn't it him that was making the first steps towards that sort of relationship?"

Brent had thought about it. It had been Devyn that had come to his house. It had been Devyn that had shown him around school those first few days. Devyn had even brought Matt and Bryan into his life.

"He used you and tried to lure you into something abhorrent," she said. "He damaged your relationship with your father. He tried to destroy your family. He wanted you to be dependent on him. He wanted to use you to satisfy his perversion. He wanted to corrupt you into a hideous lifestyle."

To Brent sometimes it felt like he really did have no one. He had no one he could talk to anymore. He was supposed to be able to talk things thru with Dr. Wilson but all she did was lecture him. She always made him feel worse. He had no one to talk to and no one to hang out with any longer.

"Brent," Richard said pulling Brent's mind back to the present.

"Um, what?" Brent said.

"Mark and I are going to go hit the golf course," Richard said. "You and Daren can check out the rest of the club."

"Um sure," Brent said.

"Are you alright?" Darren asked after the two adults left them.

"Sure," Brent said.

"You seemed lost, for a moment," Darren noted.

"It is golf," Brent said. "I find it so boring that I, um, just zone out."

"I know what you mean," Darren said. "It is boring."

"What do you normally do while your Dad is playing?" Brent asked.

"I hit the workout room," Darren said. "You want to join me?"

"Um, sure," Brent said. "But I might not be up to your level."

"No problem," Darren said as he was starting to walk towards the fitness center. "You just need to set up a routine and then hit it hard."

Brent followed Darren. He tried not to let his eyes wonder over the boy's body but could not stop himself. The teenager was built like a Greek Adonis. His arms and chest were finely chiseled. His jaw line was strong and his roman nose was perfect on his face. His curly dark colored hair even made him look more like a Greek god. There was also something intriguing about the green eyes. Brent took Darren's lead and they worked out together. They started with cardio on the bikes and then moved on to lifting weights. Brent could not believe the amount of weight the boy could lift. It was hard for Brent to take his eyes off Darren's bulging muscles as he worked each of his upper body muscle groups. "I do the lower body on my alternate days," Darren explained to Brent as they were using the weight machines. Brent found himself a little embarrassed about how little he could lift compared to the other boy.

"Let's do some bench presses next," Daren said. "You can spot me and then I'll do you."

Brent stood over the other boy as he lifted the weights. Brent tried not to look at the arms rippling with muscle as Darren was lifting the heavy bar. He tried not to study the flexing chest as the weights were moving up and down. He caught his gaze going down to the fabric of the shorts that were clinging to Darren's sweaty body. The weights made a loud clanging noise as Darren lifted them back into their brackets. "I really felt the burn today," he said breathing hard as he rested on the bench for a moment. "That is something," Brent said. "Just how long have you been working out like this?"

"Since I was a freshman," Darren said getting up from the bench so that Brent could take his place. "I'm a senior this year."

That told Brent why he had not seen this guy in school. He was sure that he and Darren were in different social classes at school and now he also knew that they had two grades separating them. Brent was just starting his sophomore year.

Darren removed much of the weights as Brent took his place on the bench. "Let me know if it is too much," Darren said as Brent's hands were finding their hold on the bar. "I can remove more if we need too."

"Thanks," Brent grunted as he lifted the bar. He slowly moved the weights. He could feel the burn in his muscles as he lifted. He saw Darren take a step forward. The guy was obviously concerned that Brent might be over extending. His hands were in position to help Brent if he needed it. Brent could not stop his eyes from checking out the guy's package as he lay there lifting the weights slowly up and down.

Brent licked his lips as the sweat started to roll down his body. He lifted and felt his arms getting weaker. He knew he only had a couple more left in him.

Darren took another step forward. His body was leaning forward as his hands were reaching for the bar. "Come on Brent give me two more. Come on you can do it. "Yeah like that." Brent lifted the bar and then slowly lowered it again. "One more buddy. Come on give it to me. You can do it. Give it to me."

It took everything Brent had to lift the bar up and then try and get it into the brackets. Luckily Darren was there to help him.

"That was great," Darren said. "Do you feel it?"

"Oh yeah," Brent said. Brent definitely felt it. He could feel the burn in his arms and chest. He could also feel something else that he knew he should not be feeling. He heard Dr. Wilson's voice in his head. "Control those urges," she said. "You know they are wrong. You know they are not normal."

"Come on," Darren said. "Let's hit the steam room."

Brent followed the older boy to the steam room. He watched Darren strip off his shirt and he followed suit. They went inside and took seats towards the back sitting next to each other.

"Wow you really are lean," Darren said noticing Brent's thin frame.

"I, um, just don't exercise much," Brent said.

"You want to join me for more of my work outs?" Darren asked.

"Um, maybe," Brent said. He was growing to like Darren a little. He just would have to keep his eyes off the boy's amazing body. Sitting there with droplets of sweat running down the teen's bare chest was making it even harder for Brent. He tried to focus on Darren's face and not his sculpted chest. The tan skin and hard muscles were even more inviting than when the shirt was covering them.

"You look wiry, so you could fill out fast," Darren said looking over Brent's chest. Brent's skin still had the hint of his vacation tan. His skin was smooth and lean. He was almost to lean. It was obvious that he had not had much of an appetite the past few weeks.

"I'm not sure I'm up to your level," Brent said looking over Darren's chest.

"If we get you working out a few times a week you will be amazed at the change," Darren said. "Do it enough and you can get guns like this." Darren held up his arm flexing his bulging bicep.

"I don't know if I'll ever get that," Brent said.

"Want to touch it?" Darren asked grinning at Brent.

"Um, that's alright," Brent said.

"Go on feel how hard it is," Darren said. Darren saw the hesitation in Brent's blue eyes. "Go on man it's cool. Feel how hard that muscle is."

Brent reached out and gripped the solid mound of muscle. His fingers closed around it. He could feel the heat of the other boy's skin. He could feel the moisture from the steam and Darren's sweat. He could also feel the cords of cable that went into that large ball of muscle.

"Rock hard isn't it?" Darren said grinning as Brent's fingers were sliding over the mound of flesh.

"Sure is dude," Brent said and with one last squeeze released the other boy's muscle. Brent could feel sweat sliding down his chest and his back. He did not believe it was all from the heat of the steam room.

"With some hard work," Darren began. "I bet we can put some muscle on you." He reached over and lifted Brent's arm. "Go on flex it."

Brent wasn't sure if it was the heat of the steam room or the physical contact of the other boy but he could feel his blood boiling and surging. He flexed his bicep and it was nothing like Darren's.

"It is more than I expected," Darren said his fingers feeling the hard muscle of Brent's arm.

"Nowhere near as big as yours," Brent said relaxing his arm.

"don't worry we will get you there," Darren said slapping Brent on the back. "It will just take some time and work."

After several more minutes in the heat of the steam room, they headed out for showers. Brent followed Darren into the locker room. They moved to their lockers and grabbed their stuff. Brent was relieved that the showers were not just one big room. He wasn't sure he could keep his excitement for Darren from showing if they were standing side by side naked.

They moved into their shower cubicles and Darren was talking about the workout routine that Brent should be doing. Brent listened as they quickly showered. They finished up at the same time and with towels around their waists they went back to their lockers to dress. Brent purposely kept his eyes off of Darren's body. He did not want to get caught looking to intently at the other boy. It was hard though not to check the guy out. His body was almost perfect.

"You know it has been so cool having a work out buddy," Darren said. "I think we should set up some work out times. I think I can get you into great shape."

"Um, that could be cool," Brent said hesitantly. "Only problem is school."

"Oh don't worry," Darren said. "I am sure we can work it around school."

"Great," Brent said even though he wasn't that enthusiastic.

They spent the rest of the time in the lounge drinking a protein shake that Darren said they needed after the work out. It did not taste too bad but the green color bugged Brent. He managed to get it down before the two men came in from their golf game.

"I thought we would find you here," Mark said.

"How was the game?" Darren asked.

"Richard has been holding back on me," Mark said. "He's much better than he lets on."

"I just had a good day Richard said. "How was the work out?"

"Awesome," Darren answered. "Brent and I have plans to hit the fitness room 4 days a week."

"Really?" Richard said looking surprised at his son.

"Um, yeah, maybe," Brent said. "That is if school doesn't get in the way."

"I told Brent we would be able to work it around school," Darren said.

"I'm sure we can make it work out," Richard said. "I'm glad you two had a good afternoon."

"It was great," Darren said. "I will like having a work out buddy here at the club. My teammates don't have parents that are members, so they can't come and work out here. The fitness center here is much better than at school."

"Well," Richard began looking pointedly at his son. "Brent will make a great work out partner for you. It will be nice having an older boy showing Brent the right techniques."

Brent could see the determination in Richard's eyes. His Dad was going to make sure Brent hung out with Darren whether Brent wanted it or not.

"I'm very glad you and Darren hit it off," Richard said as they drove home. "he is the right kind of boy for you to be around. He, I think, is going to be good for you. He might even have some girls he can introduce you to."

"Um sure," Brent said.

"At least he is nothing like that Roberts kid," Richard said. "He definitely isn't a sissy boy."

Brent knew Devyn had never acted like a "sissy boy". Brent wanted to say something to defend Devyn but he kept quiet. His Dad had never had a problem with how Devyn behaved until the truth came out about Devyn being gay. Brent knew there was nothing to say that would change Richard's mind about Devyn. Brent wanted to tell Richard how great Devyn was. He wanted his Dad to know that Devyn was kind, considerate and caring. He had a heart that was not matched. He looked out the window and said nothing.

By the time Brent got home, it was too late to head to the movies. He had started to try and go but his Mom pointed out that by the time he got there it would have started. Brent was going to miss his opportunity to see the boy at the theater. He hoped he would get another chance with that guy. He wanted a friend. He wanted a friend that understood him. He needed a friend he could talk to about anything. He needed someone with whom he could be himself. He thought the ticket guy might be that person. Darren might be alright to hang out with at the club but the guy would not understand Brent's true feelings. Brent needed a friend with whom he could be himself. He needed a friend that he could express his true feelings too. Devyn had been that kind of friend. Brent wasn't sure that Darren would be that loyal.
