Chapter 12

Another Rush, Another Orientation

James didn't know how to contact Paxton, but he knew Paxton'd have to be back on campus early for football practice anyway, so James undertook the long drive to the East Coast alone. On the way out of Nashville, he did pick up a hitchhiker, however, a neat twenty-year-old, who turned out to be a sailor headed for Norfolk. The navy no longer sanctioned its personnel hitching, as it once did; but as James' passenger pointed out, as long as he wasn't in uniform, they shouldn't give a damn.

James was glad for the company. He put on his most macho, the two of them hit it off well, and James learned a lot of useful information about navy life. His passenger was amazed at his luck, getting one ride all the way to his destination. When he was dropped off in Norfolk, James gave him his phone number and urged the sailor to come up to Sanderson for a visit some weekend. Said he'd even drive down and pick him up. They could go to a football game or something.

It was late when James arrived at the DIKa house, but finding a note in his box saying that the president wanted to see him asap, he went to see if Bob Riley was still up. He was in bed, but still awake. They gave each other the DIKa greeting, which for the president wasn't difficult, since he was already naked, his monster dick reaching halfway to his knee.

"I wanted to see you first off," Bob said, "because we wanted to know if you'd be willing to do something normally assigned to a junior or senior. What Beau's done for the last two years. Do the sex orientation for the pledges."

"Gosh," the surprised sophomore answered, "do you really think I could?"

"We wouldn't have picked you, if we didn't. You sure don't have any problem speaking in public. We think you're comfortable enough in your skin." He reached over and cupped James' privates. "And you sure as hell know enough about how to use this fucker to answer any questions the pledges might have." He felt James' stiffen as he spoke. His own dick twitched in response.

"Well, I'll do it, if you all will work with me on what to say. Damn, I don't want to frighten anybody, or make `em mad."

"Just do what Beau did," Bob said. "A little humor, make it like it's no big thing, but that it's what men who are close to each other do. Like now," he finished, and he began to remove James' jeans.

Soon they were both bareassed, and while James had nothing to be ashamed of, Bob had no trouble taking James' entire dong into his mouth. James could hardly get his lips around Bob without tearing them. But he was glad for the relief that Bob was offering. He'd been really turned on by his long ride with the sailor. As for Bob, he was as straight as any DIKa; but the sheer manliness of his younger brother, so unlike the stereotypical gay, caused Bob to feel even more masculine, having his dick massaged by James' tongue. He dropped his load with joy and took James' without a second thought. They spent the night in Bob's bed.

Next morning, George wanted to know why James hadn't showed up the night before. They were to be roommates this year. Juniors were all mentors, so they roomed with freshmen. Seniors and sophomores roomed with their own kind, except that one senior and one sophomore had to room together, because each class had an odd number of members. Periodically, the suggestion was made to increase the size of each class to twenty-six, but tradition always won out.

"I got here late," James answered George. "Found a note that Bob wanted to see me. We got to talking, and both fell asleep."

"Sure enough," George slyly replied. "I'll bet you still can't get it up."

They both laughed. "Can you get it up?" James teased. "I'll bet Paxton's been around."

The next three days were hectic. The chapter room was in constant use. Plans for the interviews were reviewed. There were almost dress rehearsals. Each active had to properly play his role, if rush was to be successful. And it always had been.

Jerry Squires was this year's pledge master, and as such was in operational control of rush. Sunday night, standing before seventy four other naked DIKAs, he reviewed the more important comments alumni reviewers had made about prospectives. James couldn't help but remember that he had been characterized as "sexually dissimulated." Also, as he looked around the chapter room, he couldn't help but marvel that all these guys were talking about issues without giving a thought to the fact that they were all naked. How routine does change everything.

"Dick Winslow's our surviving football star," Jerry said. "And our only hope for a replacement is a kid named Gary Higgins. He's from Anniston, Alabama, down there where they grow football players like cotton, but his evaluations are at odds with each other. One psychologist says he's probably gay, another one says he's probably homophobic. We need to look at him real carefully. If we weren't looking for a footballer, we'd probably not have invited him to visit."

"I've studied his questionnaire," James said. "I thought he was very interesting."

"It takes one to know one," someone piped up.

Everyone, including James, laughed heartily.

"That's why you're one of his inquisitors," Jerry concluded.

Hunter Saxby's name also came up. "These California types you can't always tell about," Jerry advised. "They're supposed to all be `leeebral,' as hell, but some of 'em can turn out to be like Dean Baucum." More laughter.

Monday at nine the first group of prospectives arrived. As soon as he could, James sought out Higgins, the football player. "Hi!" he said, I'm James Winthrop," as though the other boy couldn't plainly read his name tag.

"Garry Higgins," came the response.

"Oh," James pretended to think, "You're the football player, right?"

"Sure enough, I played for Anniston High in Alabama."

"That's right. The bulldogs, isn't it?"

"How the heh...How did you know that?" the surprised Higgins gasped.

"Oh, we like to find out as much as we can about the guys we invite for visits," James confidently responded. Then he moved on. "I'm into tennis myself. Did some swimming before I came to Sanderson. Never was into team sports.

"I had a partner back home, though. God, I wish he'd come to school with me here. Bill and I were about as close as two guys could be."

"I know what you mean," Higgins brightened. "My buddy was on the team too. I was the quarterback and he was the center. He got a scholarship to Auburn. I guess he's a better center than I am a quarterback. But I wish we could still be together."

"We're scheduled to play Auburn next year," James said. "You can at least play against him." Then he added, "I guess the quarterback and the center need to be friends. As close as you can be, if the quarterback gets pissed at the center, the quarterback can always grab balls instead of the ball." He closely watched for Higgins reaction.

Higgins burst into laughter. "I never thought of that. I'll have to tell Sam the next time I see him."

At that very moment a hand brushed against Higgins thigh. "Oh, sorry," the offending DIKa said.

"No problem," Higgins answered. "As crowded as it is in here, we're almost asshole to asshole anyway."

James seized the moment. "Yes," he laughed, "last year some dude got real upset. Said he'd been groped," and he let his land brush his crotch.

"He better not try to play football, if he gets hung up about that." Higgins laughed.

"Oh, Ben, have you met Gary Higgins," James said, as he passed the Alabaman to the next inquisitor, and proceeded to his next victim.

He was not impressed with either of the other two prospectives to whom he was assigned in the first group. One was unbelievably snobbish, like he was doing the fraternity a favor by coming; the other had the social graces of a concrete garden ornament. It was almost impossible to get him to say anything.

In the second group he was to quiz Eric Jensen, the boy from Winnetka. He was smooth, as James knew he would be. And James wasted no time in bringing up the issue that had intrigued him. "I was interested, Eric, in what you said in your questionnaire about your relationship with your male friends, that you were especially close to them. How so?" he asked.

Jensen was obviously not expecting the question, but he stayed on stride. "Oh...I dunno...I guess I meant that when you get to know guys really well...that you can anticipate what they are thinking, what they want to do, almost what they're going to say next. That's what real friendship is about."

"Well," James replied, "that's the sort of relationship we brothers think we have here at DIKa. A closeness, really closer than family." He watched for a reaction.

Jensen smiled broadly and said, "I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean. But `closer than family' is the way I'd describe some of the relationships I've had with my friends back home."

After the each round of visits each active wrote a fifty word evaluation of each of the prospectives assigned to him. The officers in council eliminated those who were universally scorned, and the members then met to vote on who would be invited for a return visit.

Higgins came in for a good bit of discussion. James championed him, while both of his other inquisitors felt he was probably too straight to become a DIKa. They finally decided to ask him back but scrutinize him very closely. Jensen and Saxby both made the cut. Another guy James had quizzed and had not been impressed with, John Merryweather, also was called back. So three out of the nine prospectives assigned to James were invited back, as well as Saxby, whose questionnaire had impressed him.

Back in their rooms, He and George compared notes and two of the guys George had talked to and approved of were also invited back.

Wednesday afternoon there were forty visitors who were offered sour mash whiskey, and re-interviewed. James was surprised that Higgins sought him out and asked to speak with him alone. They slipped into the hallway outside the officers' quarters. "We won't be bothered here," James promised.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking," the young quarterback began, "and you seem like an all-right guy.

"I'd really like to pledge a fraternity, and I really think I'd like Delta Iota Kappa, but like I said, I've been thinking...and I don't want to live a lie."

The pause was excruciating. "I've never told anybody this before," he continued, "but I'm gay. I think you ought to know that."

James put his arm around the thick neck of his companion, and said, "I'm glad you told me, Gary. And I want you to know that won't make the slightest difference to us. I can't say you'll get a bid, and we're not a bunch of gays—we have some, yes—but we don't discriminate either way. And if it'll make you feel better, I'm gay too."

Four of the twenty five pledges that trooped up to the Chapter Room the following Monday for their first indoctrination by Pledge Master, Jerry Squires, were Higgins, Jensen, Saxby, and Merryweather. And they were as nonplussed as previous classes had been, when they trooped back down in their birthday suits.

Like last year, the sex session got off to a slow start with Jerry managing the mutual dick shaking. Finally, James took the floor.

"Usually a junior or a senior leads this discussion," he began. "I guess the brothers picked me this year because I'm experienced beyond my age." There was the expected laughter.

He covered all the information Beau had provided the previous year, but it seemed to James that this year's group was less receptive to the idea of male sex than his group had been. So he riffed a bit more about attitudes.

"A lot of guys are brought up to think that anything sexual beyond the missionary position with a girl is `an abomination,'" he said, "but out here in the real world we find out pretty quick that things are different. Gay guys are not all limp-wristed female wannabes. And being gay isn't something that you can turn off by praying about it. Straight guys find out that their dicks won't fall off if they happen to get with another man. And a lot of 'em find out that they can get a kick outa being with another guy, when they're in the mood. Some guys who've thought they were gay find out they can enjoy being with a gal. And none of it's anything to be ashamed of.

"Gary Higgins, would you come up here, please."

Gary came up front just like James had the previous year, and like Beau did, James wasted no time in taking the surprised freshman's dick in his mouth and sucking it to completion. And then Jerry did the same for James. James finished his remarks and asked for questions. There were not as many as there had been the year before, but the expected bases were covered. James thanked the class for their attention and Jerry dismissed them.

James sought out Gary as soon as he could. "I hope you didn't mind," he said. "I had to pick somebody I knew wouldn't freak out."

"Well I just about freaked anyway," Gary replied. "But then I saw everybody else in the room had a hard on, and as you went to it they all seemed to be turned on. And a couple of guys have already asked me what it's like."

"I know what you mean. I was the one that got called up last year."

"Well I'm not pissed for sure. Like to return the favor, actually."

"Your place or mine?" James laughed.

The rest of the week went as expected. Eric Jensen was asked to read the first lesson at chapel. After the pledge class had recovered from the shock of James presentation, both James and Gary received the requisite number of requests to be initiated in the mysteries of oral sex. As word got around, it all seemed to become routine.

The following Monday classes began.
