"Morning Gramps," I said as I met him on the porch where he was sitting and quietly reading the paper.

"Morning my favorite non adopted granddaughter," he said as I sat down by him. "What's on your mind?"

"Someone is investigating me..." I said bluntly and then went on to tell him the whole sorted story behind Becky Sue's Uncle Bob doing the bit of investigative work for me. "...and I'm almost sure that Roy Moore is my Dad's former Superior officer. I've even got a picture with him in it."

"I remember him from early on in Baron's days in the Marines," Grandpa said. "He always was a curious man."

"What do you think he wants with me?" I asked.

"Must be something involving your Mom and Dad," Grandpa said. "Could be something to do with your Dad's benefits that we've never received."

"And come to think of it we did move up here without telling anyone back home," I said. "Well anyone who knows Dad."

"Very true," Grandpa said. "But still I'm gonna give this Mr. Moore a call and get some answers."

"Here you go," I said as I handed him my cell phone. "You do know how to use that?"

"It's got me so rattled without a phone cord that I just can't fathom how it operates," Grandpa said as I laughed. "Yes lil Miss Smart ass I can handle a cell phone."

"OK, if I get some breakfast for us?"

"Already ate, Carolyn was up early with Raegan," Grandpa said. "I think Raegan's back to sleep on the couch so keep it down OK?"

"She's here, why?" I demanded.

"Because Richard and Carolyn decided she could stay here and I don't know the girl enough to raise a ruckus over her," Grandpa said. "I can see that you don't feel very fond towards her but try and be civil... and that's not a request."

"Yes sir," I replied in a defeated 'I might as well do what he wants' voice. With that Grandpa opened my phone to begin the process of tracking down this Lt. General Moore guy and I got up and silently walked off into the house. I stopped dead in my tracks when I came through the door and found that Raegan was just coming out of the living room. "UMMMMM... Hi?"

"You don't have to talk to me, I'm leaving in a few hours and you won't have to deal with me," Raegan said as my eyes became fixed on her expanded belly and the reality of her pregnancy settled in. "I'm staying at my Mom's old house."

"I've already been told to be civil and I will," I said weakly. Figuring that changing the subject was something that would benefit both of us, I said, "By the way, how many months are you?"

"Almost six," she said as she rubbed her belly. "Think it's gonna be a girl too."

"You been keeping your doctor's appointments?"

"Some of them," she said.

"Some of them?" I asked. "Talk about selfish."

"Huh?"

"You're being selfish," I said. "This is not about you it's about that baby inside you."

"I didn't go cause my Dad's lousy ass wouldn't help me and my boyfriend doesn't have insurance," she said. "No money, no doctor."

"Yeah, that would be hard," I said. "Look, if you're gonna hang around and you don't cause trouble, you don't have to worry about the money anymore. I'm pretty sure Grandpa would make sure you don't put the baby at risk."

"He already offered," Raegan said with a blushing smile. "Nothing like a baby bump to get someone's sympathy."

"Just don't use him to get money for other stuff," I said. "I won't stand by and let that happen."

"You'll bust my ass I know," she said as I half smiled. "Knowing you're watching will help me stay in line."

"She'll be watching alright," Taylor said as she and Becky Sue came down the steps with Reggie trailing them. "Be watching your ass."

"Shut up," I said as Taylor grinned and giggled when I kissed her lips. "Good morning."

"Morning my girl," Taylor said with a grin.

"You two should dump Jessie and Mickie and hook up already," Becky Sue giggled.

"And you should get on that plane already and go home," I said as Becky Sue stuck her tongue out at me.

"Some of us will miss her when she goes," Taylor said as she hugged Becky Sue's arm. "So ha."

"So what's this about ass?" Raegan asked with a smirk.

"Go to hell, all of you," I said as I walked off towards the kitchen and left everyone laughing.

"Did you sleep good?" I asked as I woke to see Rae smiling up at me.

"I sure did, Pynsey," Rae said as she leaned up and kissed me softly on the lips. "MMMMMMMMM."

"I wish I could say the same," I said. "Maria never come home."

"Yes she did," Rae said. "She came in a little while after you went to sleep. I was watching The Drew Carey Show when she came in."

"Why didn't you wake me?" I asked.

"You were resting good and I know how hard it is for you to sleep some nights," Rae said. "So I let you sleep. You mad at me now?"

"Noooo," I said as I leaned down and kissed her lips softly. "But why didn't she crawl in with us?"

"She didn't say," Rae said simply. "Laid down on the couch and I never heard anything else from her."

"She will tell me," I said as I slid out of bed and walked into the living room. Maria grumbled as she rolled over and turned her back to me on the couch and tried to go back to sleep. "We need to talk."

"Later, I'm still sleepy," Maria grumbled.

"Where were you last night?" I asked pointedly. "Maria Cortez, answer me."

"Jesus H Christ Lynsey," Maria griped as she rolled over and saw me standing there with hands on hips. "I was with Marty."

"You left with her about five to give her a ride home and we never heard from you again," I pointed out.

"We went to the Metroparks Zoo," Maria said with a long yawn. "And we got into it with Taylor and Mickie..."

"Why?" I asked in complete confusion.

"We ran into them and their friend at the Zoo and as always Marty tried to convince Mickie to be her friend and one thing lead to another and... it got ugly " Maria said. "But I couldn't just abandon Marty so we headed back to her Guardian's place and she was gone on an emergency. So we sat on the porch for like two hours and she cried."

"You couldn't have called?"

"My cell was dead," Maria said.

"I don't get why you want her around all the time," I said.

"You're the one who kept her car all summer," Maria said. "A bit hypocritical are we?"

"Not one bit," I said and stuck my tongue out as Maria laughed. I squealed when she jumped up and caught me in her arms. "Oh boy!"

"Nah, I'm not in the mood," Maria giggled as she simply walked away. I groaned as Rae came out of the bedroom and watched me fuming.

"Next time you are in the mood see whose ass you get," I said as Maria looked at me now over the counter. "Huh?"

"Lynsey we both know I can get you going almost anytime I want," Maria said. "I've never even had to try hard."

"It's true, me either," Rae said.

"You guys are calling me an easy whore," I accused.

"I'll be your whore if you be mine," Rae said as I blushed and quickly agreed to that wonderful suggestion as she came over and we kissed softly for a long moment.

"Whoa, hold on Pynsey," Rae said as she pulled away, "I think Connie is stopping by today and I need to put the finishing touches on the painting."

"Party pooper," I said as she giggled before walking off. On cue, it seemed, the doorbell rang before Rae could even get to the bedroom. She breathed a noticeable sigh of relief when she saw that it was Mr. Powers at the door. "Hi Mr. Powers."

"Morning ladies, I'm glad your up, we need to talk," he said.

"About what?" Maria asked as she came out of the kitchen.

"The rent, which I have not received," Mr. Powers said bluntly. "I really do need it now."

"I meant to come by and give it to you," Maria said as she reached under the plant on the table in the hall and pulled out a wad of cash. She counted out the right amount and handed it Mr. Powers. "That's right?"

"As always," Mr. Powers said. "And per my deal with your lovely friend Rae, you won't be seeing my hand out for the next four months."

"Good deal," Maria said.

"Are we going to be working some more on that?" Mr. Powers asked Rae.

"We sure are," Rae said. "Be this afternoon though. You can come and watch."

"Tap on my door," Mr. Powers said as he left and Maria closed the door behind him, and turned to find me giving her a look that I knew spoke volumes.

"What?"

"Is there anything else you're not telling us?" I asked Maria pointedly.

"What the hell are you talking about Chica?" Maria asked.

"You don't mention a word about staying up all night talking to Marty, you don't call and you spend all day and half the night with her again," I said. "And now you've got money for the rent and some left over with no explanation."

"The money came from my Dad just exactly what you and Rae wanted me to do," Maria said. "Why did I need to tell you I visited my Dad?"

"I'd just like to be involved in your life," I said softly. "And lately it seems like I'm not."

"Really sucks too," Rae chimed in as I hugged her.

"OK, you're both right," Maria said as she walked off back into the kitchen. A bizarre uncomfortable silence filled the air for the rest of the morning.

So here is it Monday morning, my first official day as President, VERY cool. Anyway, Taylor headed off to class and left me by my locker and stuffing books into my bag when I felt a gentle tapping on my shoulder. "Forget something girl I love?"

"Huh?" Jane asked as I turned to see her looking at me in confusion.

"I thought you were Taylor, what's up?"

"I just wanted to say officially, congratulations on the Presidency," Jane said.

"Thanks," I said. "It's gonna be a lot of work but I think I'm up to it."

"I can help," Jane offered immediately. "I can do lots of things to take pressure off you."

"I don't even know what all it involves," I admitted. "Well I have a good idea but not completely."

"One thing you have to do is determine how the budget is used for the clubs in school," Jane said. "Well actually you make recommendations and if it's OK with Mr. Kennedy then that's what happens."

"I have to what?" I asked as Jane smiled and tried not to laugh. "That sounds ripe for pissing people off."

"I guess you do need a thick skin to be President," Jane admitted. "So with that in mind I spent a few minutes this weekend working up a budget and if you wanna see it..."

"You did?" I asked as she reached into her satchel and pulled out a few pages of neatly stapled papers and handed them to me. I read as I combed over the names of the numerous school clubs. "Chess club, Math club, Young Republicans, History club, Friendship Incorporated, Spirit Society?"

"Spirit Society is a club of school boosters," Jane said. "Notice the end of the list?"

"Gay/Straight Alliance," I said with a smile. "We haven't even got to work much on that yet."

"I got a copy of the figures you gave Mr. Kennedy for the budget," Jane said. "I think I worked everything out, take a look at page two."

"Yikes, this is seriously good," I said as I looked at a list of figures. "How did you do this?"

"Computer program I wrote does most of the work," Jane said. "I also registered your club with the GSA national network."

"Thanks," I said.

"Also I took the liberty of talking to all of the club heads and get their ideas for the budget and on pages three through five I outlined that," she said.

"Did you sleep at all at this weekend?" I asked. She laughed and grinned proudly. "This is amazing work."

"Not really, but I'm glad you appreciate it," she said.

"I do, more than you know," I said. "But looking at this I think you should be President."

"Yeah right, some day," she said as she picked up her satchel and quietly walked off.

"She's impressive," I said to myself, still reviewing the papers as I headed off to class a few moments later. I emerged three hours later for lunch and wanted nothing more than to see my girlfriend for a while and take a breather from everything school related. But Taylor wasn't thinking along those same lines as she quickly informed me of her and Jessie's plan to work on Jessie's moves during the free period. "I'll pass."

"Then don't complain when I come back laid," Taylor said with a devious grin as she ran off to meet Jessie.

"DON'T COME BACK THEN, I'LL TAKE LANEY!" I screamed in reply as she laughed and disappeared out the doors. I blushed and swore my later vengeance for her making me embarrass myself. I shook my head and turned to head off to the cafeteria when I slammed, literally, into Carrie. Her bag crashing to the floor and out flooded a bunch of pamphlets about various topics. Various gay topics I noted as I looked at them.

"I'm sorry, it was my fault, just please give me those?" she asked and snatched them from my hands and rose, as did I, and tried to walk away. But my mouth sometimes thinks for itself and this time it did just that as it asked, "When you did you know?"

"When did I know what?" Carrie asked with her back to me.

"That you were gay," I said bluntly.

"None of your business," she snapped in her usual style. "None of your fucking business at all."

"OK," I said and turned to walk off when I heard the whimpers and knew she was crying. Now I know this is weird, but it dawned on me at that moment that I sorta caused this episode with my question. OK you can guess how I felt as I stopped and decided to make at least an attempt at helping her. Even if she was mine and Taylor's arch enemy. "Hey, you're obviously not OK."

"Why do you care? After what I did you should hate me," she said as I set my book bag down. She was right, I should, but I didn't in those few moments of crisis.

"If you don't want me to care, I won't," I said. "But I made you cry by asking a personal question and I didn't need to do that."

"You made me cry? You wish," Carrie said as she threw her book bag down. "God made me cry by making me like this. I hate this, I hate feeling like this and I swear I wish..."

"I felt like that too," I inserted into her rambling. She looked at me to see if I was serious. "Maybe not to this extreme but I know what you're going through. It's scary as hell and you wish the world would stop so you could get off."

"Yeah, exactly," she said in an amazed voice. "How the hell could you possibly know that?"

"School lesbian," I said as I pointed to myself. "I've been there."

"I don't know that I am a lesbian, or gay," she said. "I think I still like guys too. I don't even know if I like girls for sure. I'm so impossibly confused."

"Well here's the good news," I said as I lifted her book bag and placed it on my shoulder. "There's no cure for this and only time will help you sort out the mystery."

"Oh great thanks," she said as I laughed. "What are you doing with my bag?"

"I'm gonna be your first friend," I said.

"I have friends!" Carrie protested. "OK, no I don't. But why do you think I'd wanna hang out with you?"

"OK, then eat lunch alone," I said as I handed her book bag back to her.

"I'll take you up on the offer," she said as she took her book bag and we walked off in tandem. Talk about a bizarre turn of events and one I'd have to later explain to my girlfriend. But, surprisingly, this wasn't at all a big deal.

><> (: ~ :) <>< LANEY'S 'point of view' ><> (: ~ :) <><

Sammi's giggling was easy enough to hear as I rounded the corner of the building and saw her sitting with Darcy and her friend from work, Taisha. A couple of sandwiches and soda being wolfed down by the threesome as they spotted me.

"Who asked you to join us?" Darcy asked with a smirk as Sammi giggled. This was also the first moment that I saw Marty reading by herself while she sat leaned back against one of the trees a couple hundred feet away.

"I did, we're running away together," Sammi said with a horny smile directed towards me.

"If I weren't already dating the hottest girl in school, I say let's go!"

"Damn it," Sammi said as everyone laughed.

"We got about ten more minutes Sam," Taisha said. "As much as I hate to get back."

"Why what's up? Bad boss?"

"Great boss actually, right?" Sammi asked Taisha.

"Carney, that's our manager, she's great," Taisha said. "But we have inventory and that's always a pain in the ass. Expect to be home late."

"I already told Mavis, she's still gonna wait up for me," Sammi said with what I could tell was a proud smile.

"Actually she's gonna sleep in the chair while waiting up," Darcy said as Sammi laughed. Nervous footsteps crunching gravel under them directed everyone's attention upwards and to, of all people, Marty. Darcy's eyes going from a beautiful peaceful blue to a dark angry tone as she jumped up and glared at Marty. "What are you doing? Did I say you could join us?"

"This is not about you, I came to apologize to Sammi," Marty said in the midst of Sammi jumping up and getting in front of Darcy.

"You came to do what?" Sammi asked over her shoulder, not sure she had heard Marty right.

"I came to apologize," Marty said nervously.

You might hate the girl for what she tried to do to Mickie and Taylor, and I pretty much do, but even I had to admit that she had some balls to walk into the lions den like this. I mean think about it, what was stopping Darcy from just pounding her into the ground like a yard spike?

"Do you know how bad I'd like to pound you?" Darcy asked Marty.

"Down girl," Sammi said to her best friend. "You're not fighting her."

"I never said I was going to," Darcy said and followed it with a pained, fake smile that showed off her adorable dimples. Sammi grinned and I knew then that Sammi most likely had feelings beyond friendship for her bestie.

"I'm sorry for saying what I said to you that morning that Alex made me enroll back in school," Marty said. "I've felt terrible about it ever since."

"You should have never said it to be begin with," Darcy said pointedly.

"True dat" Taisha said as she rose too. "She cried over that a few times."

"It's over and I choose to forgive her," Sammi said firmly. "Not a single word from the peanut gallery."

"You do? Maybe we can be friends again?" Marty asked.

"Not a chance in hell," Darcy demanded as Marty's face fell.

"She didn't ask you, she asked me," Sammi said to Darcy. "It's not your decision Dar Dar."

"OK that's fair but she was never your friend to begin with," Darcy said.

"Now I'd like to be," Marty said softly. "I'm clean, and sober, and you can even have me tested for drugs and I'd pass."

"That has got to be a first," Darcy said smugly.

"First time in probably three years," Marty said in reply. "What do you say Sammi?"

"Maybe..." Sammi said. Pausing when a horrified cry could be heard coming from a girl not to far away.

"LOOK OUT!" Came the screeching cry from a girl a hundred feet or so away as she pointed to a car that was speeding in the direction of the curb. I dropped my soda as Sammi and Darcy looked back. The car jumped the curb and came barreling directly towards the spot where we had been sitting. I got to my knees and literally dove out of the way as Taisha grabbed for Sammi's hand but got Darcy and pulled her to safety a few feet away. I watched then from a few feet away, in seemingly slow motion, as Marty's eyes went to one of shock and horror and finally she lunged forward and speared Sammi, sending both of them sailing towards me just as the car slammed into the building like a missile and created a huge plume of dust and debris.

I lay there coughing from the dust and all I could see was two pair of feet that I knew were Sammi's and Marty's. Problem is, they weren't moving.
