"I HATE ANTHONY"

BY MADDY A. (The Jersey Girl)

CHAPTER FOUR: A SLIP OF THE TONGUE

Anthony was waiting patiently for his friends to arrive. He had a long day and wanted nothing to more to do than light up a blunt and relax. Now, he didn' t really like to smoke weed, in fact he hated to. All the players on the basketball team were subjected to random drug testing and Anthony didn't like to take the risk that he might fail. Although he was unsure of his future in the sport, he was more unsure of how his life would be without it. But, that night all he wanted to do was get high. He wanted to smoke away all of the confusing thoughts of Brian he was having. He hated him, that's what he was supposed to do. For years, he had trained himself to hate him, but that was easy from a far, now he had to work closely with him and that both troubled and intrigued him. He knew that he was in for it. Anthony's mind was in a scramble. His thoughts were threatening to overwhelm him. He looked at the clock and found he still had almost an hour until his friends were due to arrive. He couldn't take just laying around his small important so he did the one thing he could do to relax. He went for a jog.

The night was bitterly cold. It was mid-November and the weather in New Jersey was at an unseasonable 40 degrees. Winter was soon approaching and the sky was already darkened to a midnight blue. His baggy black hooded sweatshirt did little to warm him. He began to run faster, in hopes of finding the warmth that he needed. He didn't realize where he was jogging towards until he found himself in front of an old friends apartment building. God! What the hell am I doing?' He asked himself. He wanted to turn and go the other way, but something compelled him to stay. He just stood there as the wind whipped past him. His short black hair blew wildly across his face, occasionally brushing into his dark green eyes. He should have turned and went back to his apartment, but he just stood there staring at the front door that lead to the main hallway of Brian's building. Somewhere down that long dim hallway were the stairs that would lead him to apartment 3B. He found himself walking up the porch steps and ringing the bell labeled Washington. What the fuck am I doing at Brian's!' He mumbled. As quickly as he ran up those steps, he ran down them and back towards his house, thanking God that no one saw him. When he reached the end of Brian's block, he turned back to look at the apartment building one

last time. He saw the figure of someone looking down at him from the porch steps and for a brief second their eyes met. Each figure stood in place trying to distinguish who the other were. An ambulance sped down the block, illuminating the street with bright blues and reds. Each persons face quickly, but briefly revealed. Shock ran across both of their faces as the other became recognizable. Anthony quickly disappeared around the corner and the street was once again empty. Anthony ran faster and faster down the street until he reached his building. His milky white face now flushed red with heat from the physical exertion, and from something else he wouldn't admit to.

Brian stood staring out his window. Although it was only a little after five, the sky was black with night signaling that winter was just around the corner. He was lonely. His mother was rarely home, but he knew that it was only because she loved him. She had to work long and hard hours as a Nursing Assistant. She was saving every penny that she earned to send Brian to college. Her son was smart and she would do everything in her power to make sure that he got out of the slums of their neighborhood. She didn't want him to become some drug addict or working at a dead end job. Her son was much to smart for that. She knew early on that her son was destined for great things. He had learned to read by three and by the time he was in second grade, his teachers all wanted him to be skipped to the next. He read books that not even she read, even some she never heard of. Her son was destined for great things and she would be damned if he was going to be held back from reaching his full potential. So she worked long hours in hopes that when the time came, she could send him to school. Brian's father was long gone. All he knew about him was that he was West Indian and it was suspected that he was now living back in his native country. Brian hadn't seen him in close to thirteen years so it was just him and his Mom. He often longed for a brother or sister to keep him company. He found something better than a brother with Anthony, but he was aware that he no longer could get what he wanted from him, what at one time he thought he needed. The things that he once believed he could find from Anthony, he knew were lost. He didn't even want them... `Or do I?' He asked himself. He open up his living room window to feel the cold wind dance across his slender dark brown face. He laid down on his couch, snuggled up with his black fleece blanket and his copy of "A Separate Peace". He heard the familiar sounds of cop car sirens along with the other noises of the Ghetto. Strangely the sounds of the familiar comforted him. Somewhere amongst the noise he thought he heard someone call out his name.

Curious, he sat down his book and looked out his window again only to see a hooded figure now standing on his porch steps. Normally he wouldn't give seeing someone on his steps a second thought. There were at least twenty other families who lived in his apartment building so there was always a vast array of people coming and going. But, there was something about that person which seemed familiar, like he knew them. The figure walked up the steps and Brian jumped at the sound of his bell buzzing. He ran down the decrepit stairs and down his dilapidated hallway as if he was running towards his destiny. When he reached the door the person was gone. He walked out barefoot onto the porch and gazed down the street. His toes were freezing from the cold and he wished that he would have slipped on a pair of sneakers. He saw the back of the hooded figure running down his street. He was tempted to run down the street to catch the figure, but the chill on his toes told him otherwise. Once the figure reached the end of the street, it turned back to look at Brian. Where do I know him from?' Brian asked himself. He could tell it was a guy from the figures tall and what seemed to be muscular form. The two guys just stood in their respective locations, looking at each other. Each couldn't see the other' s face, but were both entranced with the others silhouette. It was so cold out, but that didn't matter to Brian. He had to know who that guy in the black hoody was. As if God heard his plea, an Ambulance Truck came speeding down the street. For a brief moment the street lit up and Brian's deep brown eyes met the warm dark green eyes of the one person he hated. The one person he hated to hate. In a shock of seeing Anthony's face, Brian withdrew to the safety of the hallway. What is he doing here?' Brian asked out loud to know one in particular. He slowly opened the door and peered outside, but Anthony was long gone. Did he ring my bell? Why would he ring it just to run away?' So many questions Brian asked himself. He dragged himself back up the stairs and laid down once again on his couch. He was no longer in the mood to read so he just laid there deep in thought. His heart fluttered, if only for a brief moment. I hate him, I will not feel that way again for him. I hate Anthony!". He yelled out-loud. No one was home to hear him.

A nice hot shower is just what Anthony needed to relax. He let the soap run

down his body and felt some of the tension leave him. He had just hopped out when he heard the bell ring.

"Its about time Bitch! I've been waiting for your punk ass to get here for like two hours!" Anthony yelled at Carlos.

"Calm down kid! Carlos is here wit da weed." Carlos said with a smirk on his face as he pushed past a toweling wearing Anthony. Anthony retreated into his bedroom to get dressed and he heard his bell ring four more times. He groaned to himself as he realized that he was once again the victim of one of Carlos's impromptu parties. He strolled out of his bedroom wearing a baggy dark blue colored velour sweat outfit. The color of the velour complemented his eyes making them stand out even more than the usually did. He saw close to fifteen people in his living room, all already smoking the joints. He only recognized five people, one being Jacky.

"Aye! Jacky man you made it!" Anthony said. The excitement in his voice was real. He had a few questions he wanted to ask him. He was surprised to see Jacky par taking in the activities. In all the years that the two of them had been friends, he only witnessed him smoking once. He had a bad reaction to the weed and vowed never to do it again. Jackson was more of a drinker. He was a little smaller than Anthony, but their builds were the same. Anthony couldn' t hold his liquor at all and it stunned him to know that Jacky could pack the alcohol away, barley getting affected.

"Yeah dude." Jacky desolately responded. Truth be told he would rather be somewhere else. The party was not his typical scene, but that night he needed to do something, anything to take his mind off of his troubles. Jacky just puffed away, choking on the smoke, but that did little to discourage him. Anthony looked down at his friend and noticed something different about him. He seemed to be troubled about something, but Anthony didn't want to pry. What he did want to know was what was going on between Jackson and Brian. His friend didn't have a thing for Brian, did he? Anthony was trying to figure out a way to bring it up, but didn't know how to. He let the thought pass and lit up his own blunt. His reddened eyes and relaxed look, notified everyone that he was already feeling the effects. Some random girl sat on his lap, but Anthony was too stoned to realize what she was doing. Many girls flirted with him, so he wasn't surprised by it. She started to grind her hips into his lap and Anthony's body reacted. The girl was far from his type, but the weed had him feeling frisky. The girl was pretty, but she didn't do it for him. No body did it for him like... She was a thick-bodied Puerto Rican girl who was friends with Lucia. Brianna was pretty to any mans eye. Her hair was long, curly and jet-black. Her olive skin was clear and smooth and complimented her dark eyes. She had been after Anthony for a while, but he never showed any interest in her. She didn't know what he saw in Lucia. Sure, Lucia was a good friend to her, but she didn't see what guys saw in her. She was too white and too short. Guys just fell at her feet. She could have had any guys that she wanted yet she had to take the one guy Brianna had been in love with. `I'll show her!' Brianna said to herself.

"Hey Ant." Brianna said. Anthony looked at her through silted eyes and gruffly responded.

"Don't call me that Brianna." Anthony said. He hated that nick name yet everyone seemed to insist on calling him that.

"Sorry baby. How about you and me go back to your bedroom where we can get comfortable." She began to grind her hips aggressively against his thighs, feeling his body respond underneath her she didn't stop. She ignored the fact that they were in the middle of a crowded party. She wanted what she wanted and she was going to get it right at that moment. She swayed her hips back and forth until she was sure that he had reached too far to return. She straddled his lap so that she could face him. Anthony's eyes were closed and he pictured

the face of the one that he wanted. In his mind it wasn't Brianna on his lap, but it was his old friend. He felt a nibble at his ear and he moaned. He mumbled under his breath.

"Oh yeah, don't stop Bri...don't stop." Brianna took that as a sign and sucked harder. People around them gawked, some enticed by what they saw and others put off. Anthony gripped Brianna's hips, but in his mind where she was soft, he felt hardness. His thoughts got the better of him as the familiar scent of Vanilla filled his nostrils. He kept mumbling. " Bri don't stop. God! You feel so good!". Brianna began to rock her hips back and forth across him and his moans became louder. She began to lick and gently suckle at his neck.

"You like this Baby?" Brianna asked in a soft voice. In Anthony's mind, her voice wasn't soft it was deep. The same voice that for the last six years he heard from a far change. It was once soft and delicate, but now it was deep yet it still seemed fragile in a way.

"Yeah...God! Don't stop!...Aye Aye...Don't' stop." Anthony moaned. He was close, real close. He knew it his heart that Brianna wasn't who he was imagining, but he let his head pretend. Her denim Jeans causing friction against his soft velour sweat pants. He couldn't take it anymore and with a guttural moan it was over. He was panting and mumbled a few words in Spanish. "Usted Se Siente tan bueno. Amo Su Brian." Anthony thrust his hips one hard last time, before he erupted inside of his pants. No one heard him except for Brianna. You feel so good. Don't stop Brian?' Brianna thought to herself.Did he say Brian? No, he must have said Bri and moaned that's all. Right?' She tried to reassure herself that she must have heard wrong. But, what if she hadn't? She could use that to her advantage. Show the Lucia that not everything in her world was so damn perfect. Her thoughts were broken by the sound of loud clapping from all the guys at the party. Anthony's eyes snapped open. He looked at the people who had surrounded him like it was the first time that he had seen them. He didn't feel embarrassed like most people would have. He didn't embarrass easily. Then he remembered the words that he moaned as he was reaching his peak. In a state of panic, he looked at Brianna's face to see if she had heard him. Relief washed over him as she smiled down and kissed his face.

"You were great baby, but next time were going to do it alone...and with no clothes on." Brianna said seductively as she hoped off his lap and began to mingle with the other guys. The few girls that were there looked at her disapprovingly. Including Regina who had come just in time to see the end of the show.

"Brianna do you even care that he has a girlfriend, who happens to be your friend.?" Regina asked her. Brianna looked at Regina and rolled her eyes.

"Oh please! I was doing the girl a favor. She doesn't put out for him so somebody had to and its not like we had SEX anyway. And you know something, Anthony has the biggest Dick. Its even bigger than Jacky's." Regina stood there fuming. The gall of Brianna to bring up her past history with Jackson. One of the reasons Jacky stopped smoking weed was the first time that he did it, he so far gone that he wound up losing his virginity to Brianna. A mistake he wished never happened. In true black girl fashion, Regina rolled her eyes and stepped into Brianna's face. Regina was not one to be played with.

"Shut the fuck up slut. I already no about how you sucked him off last summer. Who doesn't. You are so fucking NASTY!" Regina replied and walked off to be with her man. Jacky sat on a couch with his face downcast. His eyes were blood red from the weed he had been smoking, a sight that Regina had never seen. She was both concerned and infuriated by Jacky's state. Her anger won out in the end.

"Yo! What the fuck Jackson!" She screamed at him and he knew that he was in trouble. The only time she ever addressed him by his full name was when she was pissed.

"Hey baby, I didn't know you were going to be here." He replied and it was true. If he would have known that she was going to be there, he wouldn't have smoked so much weed.

"What the fuck is wrong with you? Look at yourself! Your eyes are blood red and you stink. You fucking reek of weed!"

"I'm sorry babe I just needed something to help me mellow out." Regina calmed down and realized that something seriously was wrong with her boyfriend. Even though she no longer felt the same strong feeling she once had, she still considered him one of her closest friends. She sat down next to him and put her hand on his shoulder. He turned to her and looked as if he wanted to cry. He didn't like feeling the way that he did. He didn't want to be so confused about everything. He loved his girlfriend. He loved his life. He just hated the thoughts of Brian he was having.

"Hey how bout you walk me home. We have school tomorrow and it's getting late." She told him. She wanted to get him alone so he would open up. They left the party hand in hand as Anthony watched. ` Damn! I wanted to talk to him!'

He said to himself.

Jacky thought about opening up to Regina, but thought better of it. He knew the only reason she got him to leave the party was to talk. He knew she wouldn 't understand what he was going through, no one would. He needed to talk to Brian, maybe he could help him. Regina kissed his cheek when it was time for them to part. The kiss was one between friends, not lovers like they supposedly were. They both knew that it was over it was just a matter of declaring it out loud, which neither did. As Jacky walked towards his own home, he wondered if he should talk to Brian about how he felt. `What would he think? I shouldn't tell him. No, I should I tell him?' He kept debating with himself. He was leaning towards the latter by the time he was in his bed.

"Aye that was some show you put on. Lucia is going to have your ass when she finds out and you know she will kid!" Carlos said, sitting next to him. Anthony groaned as he realized the inevitable was going to happen. He wasn't even

thinking of Lucia. He wasn't in love with her, but he liked her and didn't want to see her get hurt. He knew that there was nothing he could do to prevent that from happening.

"Shit! I didn't even think about her. Do you really think she's gonna find out?" He asked. Carlos laughed at him in response and walked away to mingle with the other guests. Anthony knew more then a few people at the party were friends with Lucia and news traveled fast in their circle. He figured that it would be better for her to find out from him than someone else. He grabbed his cordless phone and locked himself in his mother's room. After three rings Lucia picked up.

"Hey Anthony! I heard your having a party, where's my invite?" She playfully joked.

"How did you know that?" He asked, wondering how the news had gotten to her.

"Brianna told me that she was going to go. I would have went, but I have way too much homework. You shouldn't be having a party on a Thursday anyway." She said in her ever-playful tone. Anthony didn't immediately respond and Lucia knew that something was wrong and she asked. "What's the matter? Why are you so quiet?"

"Ahhh...baby I fucked up." He said with his voice full of regret. Her New Jersey born Italian accent came out in full force as it always did when she was upset.

"Oh my God! What the fuck did you do?"

"I sorta hooked up with someone else."

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU SORTA HOOKED UP WITH SOMEONE!" Lucia yelled. She was confused, hurt and angry all at once.

"We fooled around, but I didn't have sex with her, I swear!" Anthony said in a defensive voice. Yeah, he kind of cheated on her, but not really. There was no skin to skin contact so it technically wasn't cheating in his eyes, but he had strayed nonetheless.

"Well, I'm waiting what did you do?"

"We kissed and she sorta touched me...THROUGH clothes though...and that's all!"

"YOU KISSED ANOTHER GIRL! Wait, I need a minute...who was it?" Lucia demanded. Everyone in school was aware that she was Anthony's girlfriend and she wanted to know just who the sluts name was.

"Brianna." Anthony responded and Lucia flipped.

"WHAT! WHAT THE FUCK! WITH MY GIRL! YOU HOOKED UP WITH MY HOME GIRL? WE ARE SO FINISHED!" She mumbled a few curse words in Italian and slammed down the phone.

Anthony sat on the floor in his bathroom with his hanging low. He should have been upset that he had just been dumped, but for once he felt relieved. He usually had to be the one to break up with a girl, at least he didn't have to this time. He made his way back out to the party to tell everyone to clear out. It was almost eleven and his mother would be getting off her shift at the restaurant she worked at. No one offered to stay and help him clean so he did it alone. Truthfully, if anyone had he would have turned them down. He wanted to be alone with his thoughts. `God! I hate my life!' He screamed out loudly, since no one could hear him....
