Note from the author

This is the continuing story of Robert and Johnny, who first appeared in my short series: My 11th Summer. Although intended to be a simple stand alone short series, My 11th Summer was so popular, not only with my readers, but myself, that I decided to continue the saga in Tween to Teen. And now, as the boys finish High School and move on to College and their adult life, the final part of the saga begins. So, for those who have been following the stories these last 3 years, here is part 3 of the trilogy, which I am calling: Robert and Johnny-The rest of the story. Enjoy.

Chapter 9

Goodbye Gerald

Bus

We threw one last party two days before Gerald was to leave for his deployment to Nam. He would be going by bus from Pryor to Ft. Sill where he and a number of other boys would be flown to another base on the coast, and finally to Vietnam.

We didn't want  him going off with a hangover, or exhaustion from all the sex, thus the party was on Tuesday, giving him Wednesday to recover and say his last goodbyes to everyone before leaving on Thursday.

The party was at our house in Tahlequah, and Donnie and Walter had driven up, with Jake and Ronnie riding along as well. There were others we thought of inviting, but in the end we decided this was our core group and we didn't want things to get too out of hand by inviting more people.

We arranged to have a keg, as well as some canned beer, but most of us weren't really that big on alcohol. Johnny and I seldom drank, but after all, this was a special occasion and we drank our share of beer that night.

We bought KFC with all the fixings, pizza, and Caleb's granny made us a beautiful sheet cake that said GOOD LUCK...MAY GOD WATCH OVER YOU...WE LOVE YOU GERALD.

I thought Gerald was going to cry when he saw the cake and he made a special trip just to thank the old lady and give her a hug the next day. And of course she sent him off with some of her famous Ranger cookies.

We started the party around 6 when the pizza arrived, and after we'd filled up on chicken and pizza, we brought out the cake and all sang, For he's a jolly good fellow, then had cake and ice cream. Gerald was leaking a few tears and we all gave him a hug, but I think that only made him more weepy.

As the beer flowed, the tears tried up and laughter filled the place as we recounted our childhoods, including our sexual antics. Everyone was interested in how Gerald and I met, and between the two of us we got the story out, though I think we may have embellished it a bit.

Jake was especially attentive when we were talking sex, partly because he'd come into the mix later and was younger. Not that he hadn't had his share of sex with us, as had Ronnie.

Speaking of the two, they seemed to have settled down into some kind of relationship, though I don't know if it was quite as serious as the one Johnny and I shared. They'd moved in together, and though they had their separate lives to some degree, they shared a bed most nights and didn't try to hide the fact that they had sex, a lot of sex.

By 8 that night we were all loosened up considerably by the alcohol and lewd talk, and clothes began to come off. First shirts, then pants, and soon everyone was lounging in just their underwear. Caleb surprised everyone by his choice of underwear, sporting red bikini briefs that showed off his package nicely. Caleb was always the first of our group to pick up on new styles, and apparently fashion underwear was the newest craze for men. I had to admit, they looked nice, but I wondered how comfortable they'd be. On the extreme other end was Walter, wearing boxers, and of course the rest of us had on our tighty whities.

I'm not sure who started it, but soon the underwear began to come off, and one by one we shucked them till we were all naked as the day we were born, though much better endowed these days. Needless to say, we were all rock hard by then, and it didn't take long for us to start messing around.

We swapped around, sampling the hard leaking cocks in the room, rubbing balls and butts, doing some kissing, and generally enjoying ourselves without getting too serious. There would be time for that later, but for now we just wanted to savor the moment and enjoy the freedom of being ourselves without anyone around to judge us.

By ten however, the play became more serious and the official orgy began. If you've never been to an orgy, I highly recommend it, but I will say it's best if you love all the participants, and such was so with us.

No one felt neglected or jealous as we shared our love, swapping around, sometimes ganging up on one or the other and giving them pleasure.

I vaguely remember four or five butts wiggling at me side by side on the couch and sampling each one in turn before finally finishing up in the last one in the row, Gerald. I joked that I was giving him something to take with him, a part of me that only a select few got to share. He said he'd treasure it forever and burst out laughing, then bent me over and returned the favor.

I lost track of how many times I came that night, and I know there were some who's orgasms outnumbered my own, but I certainly didn't feel deprived. I did manage to finish up with my love as we piled down in my bed with Gerald at our side.

Everyone found a place to sleep that night, Ronnie and Jake on the couch, and Donnie and Walter sharing a bed while Caleb and Tony shared the other. I have no idea if anyone did anything after that, but I know Johnny and I were pretty well wiped out at that point.

As expected, we all woke up with hangovers, but we slept late then went out for breakfast at a nearby cafe that served breakfast 24 hours a day. The food and coffee helped revive us, and by the time we got back to the house we were in much better shape.

No one was in a hurry to leave, so we sat around and shot the bull for a while, then the clothes started to come off, and though we didn't get quite as crazy as the night before, we did manage one orgasm each.

Afterwards we showered and got dressed for the trip back to Pryor. All of us had managed to get the day off, either from work or school, and there was no urgency as we prepared for the trip.

This time, Jake and Ronnie rode with Gerald in his car to keep him company, and Walter and Donnie drove back alone. The rest of us loaded up in the Bug Bus, and we were off to our first stop, my house.

Mom and Mikey greeted us with hugs and smiles, but dad was still at work. We visited a bit, then said our goodbyes, and when Mikey begged to come with us, how could we resist? Walter and Donnie hopped in Gerald's car with him, leaving Donnie's pickup in our driveway to save taking more vehicles than necessary.

With our little buddy safely strapped in beside us, we headed off to Johnny's house to visit, and found both his mom and dad were home. Apparently Johnny's dad had taken off early, whether to be there to say goodbye or by accident, he didn't say.

Of course Mikey had to visit with Johnny's mom and dad, and it was obvious they loved my little bro as much as we did. From Johnny's house we went to the DQ and filled two tables as we ate burgers, foot long coneys and fries, washing them down with sodas, and ending our meal with ice cream all around.

Next was Caleb's house, and his granny was waiting for us with a big smile and open arms. Gerald thanked her over and over for the cake and she said she'd be praying for him and his safe return. I saw them talking quietly at one point, Gerald nodding, and I thought about how special this moment was for them. Gerald hadn't had the best home life growing up, though it had gotten better once he'd settled down some, but he'd become a big part of our lives and families over the years.

We stayed at Caleb and Tony's house till almost six, and finally Gerald said he really needed to get home and spend the last night with his mom. We hated to let him go, but we knew he was right. He needed to be with his family, but it was hard to let him go.

Johnny and I were staying over at my house, and would drive him to the bus station at 8 am the next morning, so at least we'd get to say a proper goodbye. Little did we know that everyone would be there as well.

While Gerald dropped Donnie and Walter off to pick up Donnie's truck, we dropped Ronnie and Jake off at their place, then headed to my house. I'm not sure Mikey really understood what was going on with Gerald, but he seemed quiet and a bit sad on the way back home. He'd hugged Gerald for a long time before we headed out that day and I wondered if Mikey sensed something in Gerald that we'd missed. I could only imagine how he must feel, excited, anxious, nervous, afraid. I was certainly glad it wasn't me going off to war, but this was Gerald's dream, and I hoped it would be everything he'd hoped for.

That night at supper the mood was somber, but after a while Mikey began with his antics and we were helpless to resist his charms. That little guy could liven up a wake, and soon we were feeling better, if only for the moment.

Dad said he was sorry he'd missed Gerald, but that he would like to go with us to the bus station to see him off the next day, and of course mom said she and Mikey would like to go too. Little did I know that dad wasn't the only one who wanted to say farewell to our buddy Gerald.

That night, Johnny and I made slow gentle love, celebrating life and love, and trying to forget our sadness at Gerald's leaving. It had been tough enough when he'd gone off to basic training, and this was a hundred times worse. Boys no older than Gerald were dying everyday while the fat cat politicians stayed safely at home and sent more boys to slaughter every day. It was no wonder young men were going off to Canada to escape the draft, even if some did call them cowards or traitors. I was glad I wasn't faced with that decision and that those closest to me had escaped that fate as well.

After making love, Johnny and I fell asleep rather quickly and I don't think either of us moved all night. I guess we were still sleeping off the alcohol we'd consumed at Gerald's party, but we awoke refreshed, even if a little sad at what was about to go down.

We had a light breakfast of oatmeal and toast, and soon it was time to go pickup Gerald. When we arrived at his door he had his duffle bag at his side, and after one last hug from his mom he followed us to the Bug Bus. He was a little surprised to see my whole family there, but I could tell he was pleased to see them again, especially Mikey who moved up to sit on his lap uninvited.

"Well hello big guy," Gerald said giving my little brother a hug, "I'm glad you came to see me off. It's gonna be a while before I get to see you again."

"Do you have to go?" Mikey said looking sad.

"Yep, I'm afraid so. You see, I signed up to go over there and help the other guys out, and that's just what I'm gonna do. Besides, I get to fly a helicopter, doesn't that sound like fun?"

"Uh huh, just be careful, okay?"

"I sure will buddy, cause I wanna come back and see all of you real soon."

"Okay," Mikey said, but he still looked wary during the short trip downtown to the bus station.

The Bus station was actually on the same street as Caleb and Tony's house, just a few blocks north, and Caleb's pickup was parked out front when we arrived. Out front, a small crowd had gathered and I saw Caleb and Tony and their granny among them, as well as Donnie, Walter, Ronnie and Jake. There were a few others, local town people who knew Gerald in passing, but most of the folks there were just there to wish one of their own good luck, and send him off in style.

Several of them held a banner that said Good Luck Gerald and it had signatures and messages of good cheer from dozens of people. Later we signed it as well, and the banner was presented to Gerald's mom, and she treasured it for a very long time.

"What the heck?" Gerald said looking dumbfounded.

"I swear, we didn't know anything about this..." I stuttered, "mom, dad, did you know about this?"

"Well..." my dad chuckled, "we might've had something to do with it, but it was actually the chamber of commerce that thought it up. They came to us for help and we gave them a list of names to contact...and they did the rest. Along the way it appears they gained a few more well wishers however."

"This is amazing," Johnny said grinning, "even the Pryor Daily Times is here." And just about then the newspaper photographer approached us and asked us to pose for a picture.

The photographer took a dozen or so photos, and we were able to get prints of them later for our scrapbook. The photo on the front page of the Daily Times that next day was of a smiling Gerald as he soaked up the love of his home town.

Eventually, the bus arrived and we knew it was really time to say goodbye. Someone from the chamber handed Gerald an envelope containing money they'd collected for him, and we found out later it amounted to over a hundred dollars.

As Gerald's duffle bag was loaded onto the bus, we gathered around him one last time, exchanging hugs and best wishes, and mom and Caleb's granny kissed him on the cheek. When it came time for Mikey to say goodbye, Gerald picked him up and hugged him tight as they exchanged kisses on the cheek.

When he put Mikey down I saw tears in both their eyes, but then mine were a little misty as well. In fact, I don't think there was a dry eye in the place, not even my dad's.

We walked him to the bus door and patted him on the back and issued our last best wishes and goodbyes, then he climbed on board, and the door closed with a hiss.

We stepped back just in time to see Gerald settle in at a window seat, and he turned and waved to us one last time, his smile sad but genuine. We stood there a long time, long after the bus had disappeared around the corner, heading out to Highway 69, none of us eager to speak of what had just occurred. It was one of the saddest days of my life, even sadder than when we'd seen him off to boot camp, and it was several days before I was able to fully function again.

***************************************************

We received a letter from Gerald a week later, but by then he was already on his way to Nam. He seemed in good spirits in the letter and thanked us once again for the wild party and the unforgettable sendoff. I read the letter to the group and we all wrote a paragraph or two and I sent our reply off to the APO address he'd given us. It would be a month or so till we heard from him again, but we knew it wasn't always possible for him to find time or opportunity to write.

We prayed for him each night and watched the news daily to see what was going on over there. Casualties continued to rack up, and as selfish as that sounded we prayed our friend wouldn't be one of them.

We went back to our studies and tried to put our fears about Gerald and our feelings about the war on hold, all except Tony and Caleb who had become quite active in campus politics. They never missed a march or a protest and sometimes they even convinced Johnny and me to join.

We were lucky in that none of the protests ever got so far out of hand that the police got involved, but that wasn't true on some college campuses. Ever since the Massacre at Kent State, the atmosphere surrounding these protests and marches was volatile and it didn't take much to set them off.

We read about kids being beaten, gassed, and drug off to jail, and we feared that someday that might be us. From what we read it didn't take much to set the authorities off, and some even seemed to enjoy harassing and brutalizing young people.

There were other protests going on as well, blacks were demanding equal rights, and of course Johnny and I agreed they should have them. We loved Tony like a brother, and truthfully we never thought much about the color of his skin, except to think how beautiful it was. I loved the contrast of our skin colors, and I know that sounds silly, but in some ways I envied him. Of course, if I'd had to put up with the prejudices he did, I might have thought differently.

Caleb went along with Tony to every equal right march as well, and of course Johnny and I occasionally joined. There were a lot of Native Americans at the college as well, and they understood what the blacks were going through better than anyone. After all, they had their land stolen from them, were forced to march hundreds of miles to lands that barely sustained them, many dying along the way, thousands slaughtered by the white man as he claimed this country for his own.

It's strange looking back that I never saw these problems until I started college. I guess as a kid I lived in a sort of vacuum, surrounded by the people I loved, and the outside world didn't seem that important. Except for what we saw on television, read in the papers, or heard on the radio, we had little interaction with the outside world. I guess that's what living in a small town is like, and going to college was an eye-opening experience.

Johnny was consumed with his artwork, and his sculpting was improving with each new piece. After his first showing downtown, their had been a lot of interest in his work, and he'd even sold a few pieces just from word of mouth. He used the money to buy more supplies, and his works continued to fill up our house. At this rate I was afraid we'd have to find a bigger place before long.

I continued to write and had submitted several short stories to some of the more popular magazines, but so far none had been accepted. I did get a nice letter from someone at Reader's Digest who said my story had merit, but that it just wasn't what they were looking for at the moment. They suggested I choose another subject and give it another try, and so I did.

I sat down that day and began to write about my small town, my friends, my family and what it was like living day to day in such an insular world. Of course, I had to keep the sex out of it, but I did hint about such things as masturbation and puberty.

The story was rather long for a publication like RD, but after editing it a bit, I had it pared down to what I thought was the perfect length. I actually paid a girl to type it up for me, since my typing was less than perfect, then sent it off to RD and then promptly forgot about it.

I feel bad because in writing about my birthday and such I failed to mention that Johnny had his birthday as well. My man was now 19, and we threw a big blowout for him at our house, and his folks had a nice party for him at their house the following weekend. It was sunny and warm that day and we turned it into a cookout at the park and had a really good time.

We'd been legal adults for a whole year now, but inside I think we still felt like kids at times. We loved school and I loved writing, and Johnny his artwork, but we still found time to play and engage with our friends. Tony was fast becoming a leader on campus, and he was excelling in his studies and well on  is way to his goal of becoming a math teacher.

Caleb was slow deciding what he wanted to do, but theater turned out to be his thing, and though he knew it would be a tough profession to break into, he wanted to be an actor. If acting didn't work out, he'd have a business major to fall back on, but he was determined that he was going to give acting a try.

Caleb appeared in several on-campus productions, and we all had to admit that he was a natural. It didn't hurt that he was drop-dead gorgeous and all the leading ladies (and I suspect some men) swooned over him. In fact he was so good looking, that I suggested he might try modeling as well as acting and he seemed touched.

Spring break finally rolled around, and we decided to take a little trip. We didn't want to go too far and spend all our time driving, but we wanted to see something different, someplace new. After much consideration, we finally chose St. Louis. We wanted to see the Gateway Arch, and most of all, go to a Cardinals game.

Tickets, even back then weren't cheap, and since there was no internet back then we had to purchase them by phone, then mail. Johnny actually paid for the tickets with the proceeds from a recent sale, a watercolor that he sold for 200 dollars to an old lady from Muskogee. She said  it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen and was going to show it to all her friends and they'd be so jealous that they would have to have one of Johnny's paintings too. We hoped that was true, but for now the 200 bucks was greatly appreciated.

We took two ice chests with us and this time we actually planned on staying in a motel a couple nights. We were old enough now to rent motel rooms without being suspicious, unlike when we'd made our trip to Texas that year.

We left on a Thursday around 9am, stopping around noon in some little town for lunch. Johnny had been driving up until then, and Tony volunteered to drive the rest of the way and Johnny agreed. Caleb moved up front then and Johnny and I moved to the second seat and made out the rest of the way to St. Louis.

We hadn't made any motel reservations, but it didn't take us long to find a nice Howard Johnson's near downtown. We rented a room with two queen beds, and the clerk didn't bat an eye when we explained we were college students on spring break.

Truthfully, we were a little worried that someone might give us some grief over Tony being black, but I guess big cities like St. Louis were more open-minded about such things.

We paid for two nights in advance and were given two keys. I took one and held the other up for either Caleb or Tony to take. Tony grabbed it, then laughed and handed it to Caleb.

"Here, you take it, I might lose it," he joked.

We found our room without any problem, and for 20 bucks a night it wasn't that bad. It was clean and the bed neatly made, and a check of the bathroom found it was clean and well stocked. We considered unpacking first, but finally decided we had time to look around some before grabbing some dinner.

By mutual agreement, we decided to seek out the Gateway Arch first, and it didn't take us long to see it in the distance. The Missouri River was a thing to behold as well, and though we didn't go up inside the Arch that day, we did the next day. That day we just stared at it from the ground and I took several pictures at Johnny's request. He would later take those pictures and convert them to paintings, which he later sold for enough to cover three trips to St. Louis.

We ate at a steakhouse not far from the Arch, then drove around for a while, finally finding Busch Stadium where we'd be seeing the Cards play the next evening.

I don't know about the others, but the more I saw of the city, the more I loved it. I could even see myself living in a  place like this, with everything a person could want within easy driving distance, plenty of museums and attractions, and home to a major league ball team.

I'd lived in a small town all my life, and I had loved it growing up. In fact, I think growing up in a small town is probably best, but I was an adult now, and I longed for more. I kept my feelings to myself however, because I didn't know how Johnny felt about such things, and I knew wherever I wound up, he would be right by my side.

Back at the motel, we tried watching TV, but we felt restless, and after a while we showered and decided to do some fooling around. We'd brought the ice chests in, and one of them held a twelve pack of Budweiser. It was 3 point beer, because back then that was all they sold in Oklahoma, but it was enough for us, no more often than we drank.

We were still full from dinner, but the beer went down easy, and by our second one we were ready to play. We came together on one bed and began groping, rubbing, kissing, fondling each other till we were all hard and leaking.

The underwear came off next, and there was more foreplay before we finally got down to business. As we had done so many times, we swapped around until everyone had there first orgasm, then we cracked our third beer and rested till we were ready to go again.

I finished up that night with Johnny deep inside me, then Tony sucked me off as Caleb pounded him from behind. Tony had surprised me early on in our friendship by admitting that he liked bottoming, and it was obvious on his face that night. I guess even a tough masculine guy like that can have his softer more vulnerable side, and at those times it showed through.

We split up after our second orgasm, peed and cleaned up a bit, then Johnny and I settled down in one bed, and Caleb and Tony in the other for some much needed sleep.

The next day we awoke early, had breakfast at the HJ restaurant next door and headed back downtown to the Arch. This time we paid to go up inside, and what a thrill that was. I had never been that high in my life, and though I don't really have a fear of heights, the view from up there took my breath away.

Afterwards, we visited a few other local attractions and then returned to the motel to get ready for that night's ballgame. The weather was perfect, the day's highs in the 80s with evening temps to be about 10 degrees cooler.

We were nervous as we drove to the stadium that night, and after finding a parking place we walked to the gate, marveling at how many people there were, and the grandeur of the place. Once inside the gate we were assaulted by the sights and sounds of the place, and from a vendor near the gate we bought St. Louis ball caps and pennants so we could root for the home team. I don't even remember who they were playing that night, but no one doubted who's side we were on.

We'd purposely skipped dinner, and decided to dine on hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, and other ballpark treats. Of course they were overpriced, but how many times does a guys get to attend a major league ball game, so we gladly shelled out our green.

If we thought the stadium was amazing up to that point, nothing prepared us for what we saw once we climbed the stairs and emerged to see the field of green. In fact, nothing could have prepared us for the sight of our first major league ballfield and the thousands of fans in attendance that night. With the help of an usher we found our seats, and for what we'd paid, they were actually pretty good seats. We were on the second base side, just a bit to right of home plate, which we had a perfect view of.

I was so excited I could barely contain myself, but somehow I managed to eat my food while we waited for the first pitch. We wanted to eat now so our hands would be free once the game started, because we planned on being quite active in cheering on the team.

Finally, the moment arrived and the first pitch was thrown and the game began. Of all the things I'd seen in my short life, that ballgame that night 600 miles from home was the most exciting. Even seeing the ocean that summer paled in comparison, and even to this day I can almost feel that excitement and smell the hot dogs and popcorn.

It was only fitting that the Cards won that night, but I don't think it would have mattered to us if they had lost. It was just a thrill to watch them battle it out on the field as we fulfilled one of our childhood dreams, to see a major league game.

That night, as we headed back to the motel, still talking excitedly about the game, I looked around at my friends and smiled. We'd shared so much over the years, and now we could tick off one more thing on our list of to-dos.

We weren't quite prepared for the congestion caused by thousands of cars trying to exit the parking lot at once, but eventually we got our turn, and somehow we made it out of there.

By mutual agreement we decided to stop somewhere for a late night snack and wound up at a Denny's. Everything on the menu looked so good, but I settled for a waffle and bacon. Tony and Caleb ordered burgers, but Johnny had the meatloaf, and we shared our food once it arrived.

We talked as we ate, discussing what we'd seen and done, and deciding what to do next. We were in no hurry to be home anytime soon, so we decided to take our time driving back the next day, exploring along the way.

We were tired when we got back to the motel, but not too tired to have some fun. We'd drank all our beer the night before, but we really didn't need any alcohol to get us going. We pretty much did what we'd done the night before, but this time we settled for one orgasm apiece. Afterwards we piled down in our beds and fell asleep quickly.

Tomorrow was a new day, and we looked forward to what it would bring.
