The Nerd 6

He tossed the cans in the trash and rolled a joint . He stepped outside and lit it .

He took a really big hit and stared out into the darkness.

He pinched the joint out walked a few steps past his car and peed . He turned and went back inside turned off the TV and went to bed.

Sunday he worked the yard he ran the brush hog and then the finish mower and he put some bulbs in the front porch hanging lamp and the light at the road . He got the tar and shingles and patched the roof . He walked the roof and was sure that it would be dry now.

Shame a nice home was sitting in such disrepair. I guess the Grans didn't wanna leave the place they built to move back into this place.

Late in the day Billy Ray walked up and he was like hmmm let's get a beer .

Then he's like what did you do last night ?

He said got my new mattress and all that. Oh yea how is it ? I slept great and my back didn't hurt this morning. Billy Ray says cool we went to a family cookout and got in late . Billy Ray says I swear I thought I seen Adams truck coming down the road from this way last night. I said he makes out with his girl in the front yard sometimes maybe he was here .

Probably wasn't him doesn't Tony drive a truck ? I nod musta been him.

Well I at first thought it was Billy Ray who saw us fucking but now I wasn't sure. We sat in some porch chairs I'd gotten from the house and Billy says man look at you your own place and you haven't graduated High School.

I smiled at his compliment and said quietly I'd rather have a family. Billy said ya know I never thought about it like that.

We sit quietly sipping beer and Billy says there's a lot going on in your head . I sit for a bit then offer that your worries about grades maybe and sports and will your girl touch your dick. I'm worried about paying bills and having food and a place to sleep.

Billy was like yea I guess I take my parents for granted a lot.

He sits and then says are you queer? I mean I don't care if you are or not it's not my thing and all that. Before I could answer he says and you hang out with Tony and he's queer I'm sure.

I don't answer him and we just sit.

Billy says I gotta piss . I point to a tree and say over there.

He goes to the tree and I watch him piss from behind and then he turns and shakes and looks at me before he puts it away. He's normal sized like me .

We talk about cars and his girl and his parents and well he talks I listen. Tony was wrong he was only quiet around him.

He finally gets quiet and says I best get to home!

I was on the bed asleep when a knock startled me awake . The door opened before I had gotten to it and it was Adam. He was a little wild eyed and well I was groggy . I got a coke from the fridge and he asked for a beer and I said man you probably have had enough.

He said I was here and I saw it ! I said yea I know . Are you gonna blab it all over ? I just got settled and well it's gonna ruin that.

He said how do you fit his giant dick in your ass? I shrugged and said it works. He said you liked it a lot !

I shrugged again. He says I can't get my girl to do nothing ! She says I'm just sex crazed !

So I am standing in my boxers and he's dressed I go in the bathroom and pee and come out and he's in my bed. Face down sound asleep. I pulled the boots off his feet unbuckled his jeans and pulled them off him. Covered him up and turned off the lights. I grabbed a blanket and my clock and hit the sofa.

He snuggled down and went to sleep ! The clock rang and he got up and looked in on Adam finding him sound asleep. I pulled the curtains and left the door open. i showered and was getting some clothes when Adam jumped . Morning how ya feeling Adam? Like a bus hit me as he looked around and then under the covers. I said you were pretty drunk and you passed out on my bed. Do you have a phone asked Adam? No I don't . Shit I'm gonna get grounded as heck. I said where's your truck? Adam though and said I'm not sure?

I finished getting dressed and said wanna shower ? Then I can take you home.

Adam took the towel and stripped to his boxers . He said did we do anything last night? I shook my head no . He seemed relieved. Then he said I'm not queer ya know. He said if you are you are that's not my business or anything. I said get a shower so I won't be late.

I fixed some toast with butter and cinnamon sugar and we had cokes. He said I brushed my teeth hope that's ok? I smiled at him and said sure. He was lean and muscled and had quite the athletes body ! He was wearing a pair of my socks and boxers and a clean white t shirt.

We left and his truck in the ditch. He drove it out and the front tire was flat. He drove it to my driveway and parked it. As we went down the road I said just tell your folks that you had a flat and the spare was flat and you stayed with me and I don't have a phone.

Bring the tire to the station and I will fix them both this evening.

We pulled in the driveway and his mom came out and well I know where the red hair came from. His dad came from out back . Adam told them the yarn and they thanked me for being Adams friend. I said I had to leave to get to school.

I was at the station when Adam and his Dad pulled up in a newer pickup. It was clear that Adam got his athletes build from his Dad. We shook hands and they pulled the mangled front tire out and the flat spare. I looked on the used rack and found a matched set and between a gassing cars mounted the new tires and balanced them. Adams dad was fairly quiet and all and he hung back some as we worked. Adam said quietly to me that he'd never tell no one nothing about anything.

I thanked him and we settled up and Adam waits as his dad walks to the truck and says thanks !

I was closing up when a police car pulled into the lot. I was thinking it was the older cop that came thru often but when the door opened it was him. That younger cop!

He walked into the station and I just went blank and looked at him. Being a foster kid I knew how to hide my emotions well.

He says hey kid how's it going? I shrugged and said closing time trying to finish up and go home. He said are you in a rush? I lied and said that I was supposed to meet someone about some homework at their house and that I really had to go.

He seemed put out and then his radio went off and he turned and headed to the car whilst talking into it. He left with the red lights on and soon the siren was wailing. I finished up and left quickly.

I stopped at the Beer Joint and got a to go pizza. The older bar maid liked me and I took care of her car for her. We ordered lots of food from there .

She set a bag next to the pizza box and said the boss said this ones on us baby . She hugged me smelling of cigarettes.

I set the bag in the back seat and the pizza up front . I ate half of it driving home.

I got to the farm and Adams truck was gone and there were lights on inside the Airstream. I got out and opened the door and no one was inside so I got the bag and pizza out then my books. I had a quiz to review for.

Things were going well my grades were good. I shared my grades with Tony and he said that he'd been doing odd jobs for the lady in the station wagon . That she was crazy about him and that he felt bad about what they were doing when her husband was outa town. I said did you go after her ? He said all I did was call and say you gave me the number and I cut some shrubs and straightened up the basement . Then she asked me to look at a stuck window and she took off her clothes.

Well I said I hope it goes well. He wanted to say much more but others were around us now. I sorta got the feeling he was saying we were done with our fun.

Several days later while I was stacking wood at the Grans house. Neither of them had opened up the door . I saw the old car and the golf cart. I went to the house and knocked and knocked them I twisted the knob and hollered.

I went in and the house was quiet. I walked to the living room and there sat Gramps sitting in his chair with a knitted throw over him tucked in all nice and careful. He was dead. I was upset but that was for later . I walked into the back of the house and she laid on the bed dressed in a pretty light blue dress. He hands were folded on her chest and it was clear she had died as well. There was a pill bottle on the nightstand . I hadn't really touched anything inside much. I knew they were old and all but I guessed he died first and she didn't wanna be alone. I picked up the pills and the said Valium. The bottle was empty. I set the bottle back in the bathroom on the shelf with all the other pill bottles.

I went into the kitchen and dialed 0 and told the operator basically what happened .

The phone rang and a voice said Sheriff's Office. I told them what I found and they said for me to sit there and not touch nothing till they got there. I asked if I should call the family ? They said wait for us to get there.

Minutes later two cars wheeled in and I was sitting on the trailer that I'd unloaded the wood from.

They went inside and the fatter one came out with a note book and asked me to carefully tell him what happened.

I did and he made notes and patted my arm and asked if I was family. I explained that I was renting by the old house and some of the family fostering me part .

He said they are on the way up here now and so is the funeral home folks.

He said he quested they old man died in his chair and that she died in her sleep from a broken heart. That's how we are gonna write it up anyways.

The family arrived and I was in the barn putting things away. I was about to walk to my spot when Tony and his Dad walked into the barn.

Dad hugged me and thanked me for looking out for his family. That I could stay through school but I'd have to move on by the end of next summer.

He left and Tony said he means it too ! Then he says that I had more firewood stacked than he'd ever seen. They were good to me I tried to be good to them.

There was lots of coming and going and I didn't go to school the day of the funerals . Tony was the only one remotely civil to me and he barely was. I went to the Airstream after the service and a car pulled up and a man in a suit walked to the camper and knocked . I said through the screen it's open said and he opens the door. He says I'm an attorney for the family. Recently they added some changes to the will and they have left you lifetime rights to the home place 3 acres. Needless to say the family isn't happy but it was done all legal and proper and in front of myself and the judge . So don't let the family bully you about it.

I say what does lifetime rights mean? He says you can live here till you die as long as you pay the taxes and keep it up. The rest of the farm was left solely to Tony they bypassed everyone else. The family wasn't rich but they weren't poor. Tony gets it all in trust and with this property reverting back if you move away or die.

Can I fix up the house and move into it? He said there are no restrictions this is a separate tract and it says wholly to you for lifetime rights or if you move away for more than a year. So yes the house and land are yours as long as you are here. I pay the electric and taxes for the first year from the estate then I will turn those bills to you.

We can sort that later . I'd let them approach you rather than the other way around.

I told the boss about things and he smiled and said them old folks saw all the good in you ! They have given you a solid gift don't screw it up.

Tony came by the station and we talked a while. He said he knew what the Grans had done with the Will. That his parents were livid that the property was left to the Grandson and not the son. Gramps told me that he felt I would keep it and that my dad would sell it.

When they told me that they wanted you to have a home of your own how could I argue? They really liked you a lot . I guess once I graduate we will be neighbors . When I'm home from college .

Feel free to use the tractors and such. The estate will pay the taxes for a while and the light bill till next fall .

Fix it up and I will help with the repairs .

We talked late and he got up and hugged me and he meant it . I will be out this weekend I'm sure .
