Shortly after that Mike and I headed to bed as well. Saturday dawned bright and shiny and I knew that it was going to be a day around the pool. What that might involve I had no idea.

We were all out there horsing around a bit when somebody rang the bell. The boys were out of the pool and let another kid into the yard.

"Dad, Uncle Jeff, this is our friend Eddie. We just need to go have a talk with him for a few."

"Welcome to our home Eddie. Hope you brought a bathing suit."

"Thank you and I did sir."

With that, the boys disappeared into the house for a bit.

"First impressions Jeff?"

"What based on less than 2 minutes? You know that isn't enough for an informed opinion Mike, unless of course your policeman's 'Spidey sense' is working overtime?"

"Nope, but I do know his father. Pretty regular guy as far as I can tell."

"Which we both know doesn't mean a thing. Dad was a 'regular guy' after all."

"True enough I suppose. Guess we'll just have to let things fall as they may."

"Regardless if the kid is gay or not, I'm betting you see a lot more of him."

"Just because the boys are going to stand up for him?"

"Exactly, hell look at how close Dave Addams and I were even after he found out I was gay."

"He was your best friend and took a lot of grief for it as I remember."

"He did take a lot of grief and never gave me any. It really hurt when his family moved away."

"They didn't have much of a choice as I remember. The company found a better deal as far as space and taxes. It was either move with the company or find another job. They were few and far between at that time too."

"Yeah, I remember as well."

It was a few minutes later that Gary and Dan came out of the house.

"Where's your friend?"

"Getting his bathing suit on. Turns out he isn't gay Uncle Jeff. He isn't interested in sports because he is almost blind in one eye and can't see right to play."

"Let me guess, nobody ever bothered to ask before?"

"Nope, not even the phys ed teachers."

"Hard to believe that it went this long without somebody asking."

"I don't suppose it ever occurred to them to ask. Some kids just don't do sports well, just like some kids excel at them."

"Yeah, I suppose it is just that simple sometimes."

Eddie came out of the house at that point and we all just hit the pool and either swam or horsed around a bit.

Eventually, it rolled around to lunchtime and Mike fired up the grill. We had just finished eating when the phone rang. Mike just kind of scowled at the phone as he went to answer it.

"Hello?................where? I'll be there in 15."

He hung up the phone. Gary and Dan had headed into the house when they had heard Mike's first words. There was obviously some kind of routine at work here.

"Sorry Jeff, duty calls."

"Bad?"

"Three car pile up with injuries."

"Let me guess, Dovers Corner?"

"Yeah."

Dovers Corner had been the site of many accidents when we had been growing up here. Mike and I had both lost friends to it.

"Isn't the town ever going to do anything out there?"

"I put in a request to redesign that intersection every year Jeff. It keeps getting shot down."

"Not that I wish it on anybody, but let it be one of the council's kids and see how fast somebody does something."

"I've got to go."

Gary and Dan came back out of the house about then.

"Everything's laid out Dad."

"Thanks, boys. Try to enjoy the rest of the afternoon."

Mike headed into the house and not 5 minutes later was out the door in full working uniform.

The boys got back into the pool, but the joy was somewhat gone. They all realized that this could well involve somebody they knew.

It was a couple of hours later and Eddie had left when Mike got back to the house.

"Anybody we know?"

"No thank God. All out of towners. 2 fatalities and 5 serious injuries. The hospital is going to be busy tonight. Jeff....."

"I know that tone. They need us to come donate don't they?"

"They do and I have no right to ask."

"Let me throw some clothes on."

"What about us Dad?"

"Sorry boys but legally you're too young to donate."

"Who is on duty at the hospital?"

"Oh, you're going to love this. It being Saturday, Calvin Rickers. He finally got his license."

"Did they issue him a brain along with it?"

Calvin had been my biggest problem when I came out. He was all over my case day and night and at every opportunity. If the football team had lost a game, it was my fault, even if I hadn't played, simply because I was gay. On graduation day, it had rained buckets, and it was my fault. God was angry with us because I was gay. Anyway, you get the drift.

30 minutes later saw us at the hospital. Sure as God made little green apples Calvin was the first one we ran into.

"Mike, thanks for coming in. Jeff you might as well go home."

"Well, I see several years haven't changed you any Cal."

"And I don't suppose it has changed you any either Jeff, so you might as well leave."

I saw a face behind Cal that I had known most of my life.

"Nurse Chapin, how dire is the need?"

"We're likely to need every drop we can get Jeff."

"That will be enough nurse."

"Any of the family together enough to make a decision?"

"The wife is fairly composed."

"Then put it to her as unbiased as possible."

Cal went away while Mike was giving his pint. He came back a bit later.

"Go ahead and set Jeff up, Nurse Chapin."

I went into the room and sat myself down.

"You'd think he would know that blood is blood by now."

"Ella, he may never get it through his head that being gay isn't contagious. How have you been?"

"I can't complain Jeff. You holding up well in the big city?"

"Holding my own Ella and that's about all any of us can hope for."

They drew my pint and Mike and I sat there with our orange juice for a bit to make sure neither one of us was going to pass out.

While we were waiting Ella showed a black woman into the room, who was a bit banged up.

"I just wanted to thank you gentlemen for donating your blood."

Mike being the older brother, and still in uniform, did the talking for us.

"No need to thank us. We donate regularly. Is everyone in your party going to be alright?"

"It appears that they will be thank you both."

When it was obvious that we were ok, Mike and I headed back to the house. Gary and Dan had started something for supper for us all. Mike and I just crashed a little in the den.

"I would have thought Cal would have gotten over it by now."

"I don't think he will ever change."

"Probably not at this late date."

The four of us eventually had supper and once things were cleaned up we sat there in front of the TV. It was an action movie so it held our interest to the end at which point we all crashed for the night.

Sunday morning dawned just as bright as Saturday had and we again ended up around the pool. By 5 o'clock I was at the train station ready to head back to the city.

"You know you don't have to wait for an invite Jeff, just give us some notice is all."

"I know and if you need me to come for something don't hesitate to call."

"You know we won't."

I had hoped for a quiet trip back into the city. No such luck. There was a gay couple on the train and they were holding hands. I didn't know how far out this train had come from, but the guy across from me had obviously spent most of the trip in the club car.

"Disgusting those two sitting there like that."

Outwardly I ignored him.

"Aren't you upset having to travel with likes of them?"

"Actually sir, I'm more upset about having to travel with as bigoted a person as yourself."

He glared at me got up and went back towards the club car.

From then on it was quiet. We pulled into the station and I was on my way back to the building.

When I got in I checked both email accounts and found nothing that needed attention. So I headed up to the roof to see what, if anything was going on.
