I made my way inside and there were a few of the tenants hanging about. They all wanted to come in and take care of me as if they were my mother.

"Listen guys, come on it was just a crack to the head. Didn't even need stitches. There's no concussion and no worries, well at least not here. The guy who did it is in custody and thinks he might have killed me and I have no intention of letting him know otherwise. Now everybody go. You almost all of you have work tomorrow."

It was still early afternoon, but I was sure most of them had something to do. They all cleared out except for Henry.

"The restaurant is closed on Mondays Jeff. Please just let me stay and keep an eye on you? No hanky panky just watching out."

"Henry, I'm fine. You think they would have released me from the hospital if I weren't?"

"Knowing you,I bet you would have gone AMA even if you were dying."

"Well I didn't. I appreciate the offer Henry but I'll be fine."

"Yeah well if you need me just pound on the wall and I'll be right over."

"I'll keep it in mind, now get and leave me be please."

I went into my apartment and closed the door. Just in case though I didn't lock it. If I did need help I sure as hell wanted them to be able to get in without breaking the door down.

I spent the rest of the day just relaxing and kicking back. It was Sunday so I watched the race on tv. My favorite driver finished in the top 10 at least. I had some supper and was going to call it a night when there was a knock at my door. I opened it and there was Henry.

"Been awfully quiet all afternoon, just thought I'd check on you."

"Good of you to do so Henry, but I'm fine. Just going to watch a bit more tv and call it a night. I have work to do in the morning you know."

"Yeah I'm sure the halls can stand it if you don't vac and dust for once."

"They probably could, but I have to keep up with what the owner wants if I want to stay here."

"Yeah I suppose so. Ok just so you know I'm over here."

"Thanks again Henry but I'm going to be fine."

Henry went back to his apartment and I went to bed, early as it was.

Morning rolled around and I was feeling fine. A bit after 9 I got busy doing the halls. The job usually took me the better part of the morning to cover all 7 floors.

I went into Dana's apartment and found the two least gay pair of pajamas I could and then locked up again. I went and had some lunch and then headed for the hospital.

Dana was smiling when I walked in.

"Heard you got clocked yesterday. You ok?"

"Yeah just a scratch. Here's your pajamas. Hope I picked the right ones."

Dana peeked into the bag and just kind of relaxed.

"Yeah these will do just fine, thanks."

"They told you yet when they're going to let you out?"

"Probably Friday,if not sure as hell Monday. For some strange reason they don't do discharges on the weekends."

"Hey relax while you can. In the end you're not going to have to pay for it."

"Yeah that lawyer of yours was talking way over my head, but I get the distinct impression I'm going to be coming out ahead on this thing."

"Oh I'm sure of it. If the hospital gives you any grief just tell them there is pending litigation and they should let you slide on the bills for a bit. If that doesn't work we'll figure somethingelse out."

"You look out like this for everybody in the building Jeff?"

"Damn right I do."

"Why?"

"Because I can. Now I've got things to do. Let me know if they let you out earlier than Friday."

"Yeah sure."

I made my way back to the building as I knew the police would likely be looking for me for my statement of what had happened. I wasn't wrong. They were actually waiting for me when I got back.

"Gentlemen,come on in."

They kind of looked at each other for a second like they were having second thoughts on that.

"Jeez come on guys. I'm not in shape to jump either one of you even if I thought there was a chance."

They both kind of looked at their feet and followed me inside. I gave them the story of what had happened right up until the point the paramedics arrived.

"Well sir you definately have a civil suit to be filed. Do you have a lawyer?"

"Oh yes a very good one. I was waiting to call him until you gents had your report on file. He usually likes to have the police reports before he starts anything."

"Sounds like he knows what he is doing."

"Oh he does. It's the same firm my dear aunt used for a goodly number of years."

"Your aunt was good people sir."

"Don't I know it,but thank you. Anythingelse to be done?"

"No sir we have everything that we need."

"Then have a good day and be safe out there."

"Thank you sir we will try."

I got the mail and went through and sorted the bills from the junk. There were a couple of the notices returned already and not one of them was ready to stand up for Andrew.

Then my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID. It was my brother Mike. These days there was only one reason Mike called, somebody had died.

"Hey brother. Who is it?"

"What?"

"Lately you only call when somebody dies Mike."

"Well not the case this time. Truth to tell I miss my brother and your nephews wonder why they never see you anymore except at funerals."

"You know damn happy well why not Mike."

"Yeah well that's about to change,I hope. Gloria is leaving me so there's no reason you can't come out and spend a couple of days."

"Damn Mike. What the hell happened?"

"Just what I said. I put my foot down. You've been my brother for a hell of a lot longer than she's been my wife and I have a right to see you,and the boys have a right to see their favorite uncle."

"Don't tell Dave that."

"Yeah well be that as it may I told her that you were going to start being welcome in our house again. She got a wild hair across her ass and started packing."

"Mike, I love ya brother and I love the boys as well, but don't make me the reason you and Gloria split up."

"You're just the last straw Jeff. Things have been going down hill with us for the last year. So,you coming out for the weekend or what?"

"You don't know how much I'd love to Mike, but I've got a couple of things going on here at the building. One of the tenants beat the shit out of another tenant and he will be out of the hospital on Friday, but might need a little looking after. Plus I was clocked yesterday by a beer bottle,so I should hang around for any fall out from that."

"You ok?"

"Yeah fine. I got hurt worse playing football in high school. Not even any stitches. So yeah I would really like to but you see how it is. Tell you what. I'll see where things stand on Friday afternoon and if I can do it I'll catch the train and be there around 5. I'm assumming the train schedule is still the same?"

"As far as I know. Gary and Dan will really be happy to see you."

"They're what 13 and 15 now?"

"Yeah and you would hardly recognize them. Those two scrawny kids you remember are turning into two girl magnets."

"Filling out like thier father I take it?"

"No more like thier uncle. You always did have the best body in the family even if you are my little brother."

"You give them my best and I'll try like hell to get out there this weekend."

"Will do. Take care of your head. Miss you brother."

"I will. Miss all of you guys too."

I hung up and was a bit blown away by the whole thing. Not just that Gloria was leaving my brother, but that the boys really seemed to miss me. Talk about your bolt from the blue.

I heard the front door slam and knew without looking that Andrew was back in the building. There was no pounding on my door, thank the Lord. About a half hour later my email pinged. It was the account for the management office. Sure enough it was a complaint from Andrew and a notice that he was going to fight the eviction.

I was ready for him and sent out a questionaire by email to all of the tenants for their take on things. I had to at least appear to be doing the due diligence. By now it was later on in the afternoon and a few of the tenants were home already. It didn't take long for those to answer back. There was of course no shortage of opinion for Andrew to be kicked out. Still I had to wait until the majority of the responses came back. I didn't think it would take more than a couple of days for that to happen.

Henry came over to check on me once again before I started to worry about something for supper.

"I appreciate it Henry but I'm fine. Did all of my work without a problem, even went to see Dana. So take a chill pill and relax."

"It's just that you worry about everybodyelse in the building Jeff and there's nobody to worry about you."

"And I'm not really looking for anybody to fill the job Henry. I like living alone. There's nobody to get on my nerves or for me to get on theirs."

"There could be........if you really wanted."
