From Chapter 28

"Boy's -- almost dinner time!"

We came out to the living room and Dad said, "How do you want your steaks? I'm barbequing."

"You know I like mine medium rare, Dad." Said Kevin.

"Rare for me, Dad." I said.

"And ... is it Nick?" Nick nodded. "Heh, I kept calling you Mick after you left last night. Sorry. How do you like your steak, son?"

"Raw!"

"Heh! Okaaay! Rare it shall be! It'll still be moo-ing when I give it to you!"

Chapter 29

My dad ... I guess - took Nick at his word. My steak was red inside, but ... Nick's was red ... outside! I saw his eyes when Dad set it in front of him on the picnic table on our patio. They seemed to glow for a split second and then he looked up at me and seemed to look right through me. He smiled slightly and slowly blinked - or rather closed then opened his eyes. When he next looked at me, his eyes looked like they were aflame! I might have been scared ... but instead, I felt almost like I was going to have a spontaneous eruption! There was more lust in his eyes than I knew anyone ... human ... could express. But it took me a moment to feel what else was there. I felt such a surge ... almost like an electric shock ... of ... love fill my whole being!

I closed MY eyes this time and shook my head, to clear it. The orgasmic feeling seemed to drain out of me. No, perverts ... not out of my dick! It just subsided and what was left was pure ... clean ... love. Nick looked querily at me and I smiled. It was as if something passed between us that no one else could see or fathom. I had a split second moment of ... panic - as I looked quickly around at everyone else. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, I cut and chewed up my first bite of meat.

"Well, I'm glad you like the steak, Nick." Said my dad. Nick had the steak in his fist and was chowing into it, with very red juices running down his chin and through his fingers. Again I momentarily panicked, but he kept his mouth closed and his slightly oversized canines were not really as noticeable as I feared they would be.

"Oh!" said Nick. "Sorry, Mr. - "

"Ah-ah! my dad warned.

"I mean ... Ron. And Mrs. ... er ... Chrissy. No one has ever taken me so literally when I asked for a raw steak. It was ... too good to ... well ... anyway, er - sorry! I love it this way!"

My dad started to laugh and that gave Kevin a reason to join him. Up to that point, Kevin just stared, his mouth agape. Then Kevin put down his fork and picked up his own steak and chowed into it. As the brown juice dribbled down his chin, we all laughed.

"If not for you, Kyle, I'd think I raised a bunch of cave men!" Said my mom, in mock disgust. Nick looked almost crestfallen.

After that, I couldn't stand it! I lay my fork and knife down and picked up my own rare piece of meat (Again ... get your minds out of the gutter!) and tore into it with all I had. My mom giggled, but the rest of the guys cackled - most of all Kevin. I was sure Kevin was going to choke any minute! My Nicko smiled and was slightly (was that red?). My insides were churning- and not from trying to digest half cooked meat, either! (Okay, perverts, now comes YOUR line:) I knew in a very short time, I'd be swallowing another piece of yummy, raw meat!

My phone vibrated: A text! I sneaked a look. I shoved my phone back into my pocket and excused myself, trying not to run into the house. I called Mike.

"Dude!" He said. "Karston just left and I have an appointment - well, it's casual, but Karston got his coach on the line and I get to meet him tomorrow night!" I wasn't sure how he wanted me to react. After a moment of silence, "Kye! You're still okay with ... us ... aren't you?"

"Huh?" I said.

"Me and Karston! You - you're still - isn't Nick there with you tonight?"

"Yeah, but ... I mean ... yeah, of course I'm okay with you and Karston. But - why the text?"

"Kye, you're still my best friend - in the whole world! Who else would I call with good news?"

"Oh - yeah - I wasn't - um - thinking, I guess. Sorry. but Karston is -"

"Karston is a boyfriend - more like - um - a guy I'm dating - for the moment. I hardly know him."

"But - I thought - I mean - Nick is also your - "

"Yeah, Nick's my - um - other best friend - kind of like my - um - old best friend. You know me better than anyone else in the world. Well, anyway, -I thought you'd like to - "

I clearly heard the disappointment in his voice. "Oh Mikey! I'm sorry! I guess football just doesn't mean as much to me - so I didn't get - well, you know. I'm very happy for - does this mean you may go to USC - with Karston and Kevin?"

"Coach wants to meet me after Karston's buildup. I guess he and the coach are pretty tight, after his injury and the hands on therapy Karston received from him. Um - do you think you could bring me up to USC tomorrow after class? Karston has to jam and can't come get me."

"Of course! Hey! Wanna tell Nick your news?"

He was silent for a moment, then, "Um - well - why don't YOU just tell him." For the first time I figured out that Mike is upset with Nick. I felt like crap.

"Everything okay, Kye?"

I was standing in my room, with my back to the open door. It was Nick. "Er - yeah. Um - Mike has something exciting to tell you." I handed Nick my phone.

"Mikey! Wutsup, bro? Really? I mean - no kidding??!! Well, I know, but that's - fantastic! You know I'll not be able to sleep until - heh, yeah, that's true - I don't need much sleep anyway, but you know what I'm saying! Okay! I'll be praying for you, Bud! Bye."

Nick handed me his phone. "You'll be praying for him?" I said.

"Of course. I pray every morning and every night before going to sleep."

"Wow. Never thought of a vampire - praying. Oh! You - you - um - who do you pray to?"

For the first time ever, Nick looked like I took all the wind out of his sails. He slowly sank down onto my bed. His eyes got red and then tears started to form. I wanted to crawl into a hole!

"Nick ... oh Nick - I'm sorry! I didn't mean - "

"Yeah - um - that's the problem. You DID mean. I'm not blaming you. But Kyle - there are stereotypes that are hard to - to - deal with. You've seen me in daylight. Do I start to burn up? No. I don't even "sparkle"! And the sad thing is - I don't know enough other vamps to even know how most really act ... or react. All I know is that my missionary companion and I got bit and we both seem to have ... this ... thing that happened to our bodies. I don't know what has changed in me ... my body ... but it has not changed my beliefs- my love for God ... or my love for other people. I finished out my mission loving the people over there. I still do. I love you ... at least as much as I can love a new boyfriend. Even that term seems incongruous to me. I wouldn't have ever considered the possibility that I could be gay until ... until ..." Nick started to sob quietly, his face in his hands.

"It's okay, Nicko - you don't need to - " I started.

"Apparently I do ... need to! I trust you, Kyle. I want you to know my thoughts. I didn't ever consider that I could be ... gay ... before I started to suck blood from Elder Snow. I don't think he was into it as much as I was. We would meet and quickly suck each other's blood - because we didn't want to ... to ... get it from anyone ... or any-THING else. We needed to get it from someplace that would not show any scarring. The scarring goes away after a short time, but it's still there for a few days. So ... we bit each other in the butt."

"Wow - didn't that hurt?"

"Um - not as much as you might think. But the main thing is that ... Elder Snow always did it because we agreed we needed it at the time ... and I don't THINK he was ... was ... into it ... as much as I was. He never mentioned that I always got a boner when we did it ... but Elder Snow never did."

"Were you in love with him?" I asked, and then wished I could take it back. I was afraid of the answer!

"No. I loved him, but I loved all my companions and he and I didn't have that much in common. We were good companions, but that's all. He's just ... not my ... type ... I guess. Anyway, when I'd be sucking on his butt, my arms wrapped around his waist or legs - depending on our positions at the time ... I'd get a total sexual feeling from doing it ... but I'm pretty sure he didn't. I tried to ignore it, but ... I couldn't. Actually I almost did until I came home and started seeing you and Mike in the hot tub."

"I'm sorry I brought all this up for you." I said sadly.

"Actually, I'm not. I ... love that you just sat here next to me and just listened and - I can tell - there was no judgment ... at all ... as I told you all of that."

"May I ask you a question?"

"I wish you would!" He smiled at me through his wet eyes.

I reached up and gently wiped his tears from his eyes and face, then said, "Um - you said that your ... um ... Elder Snow ... is not your type. What is your type?"

"You have to ask?" He said, smiling coyly. He then kissed me deeply. "I hope that answers you ... at least partially."

KNOCK KNOCK! "We're having dessert out here, boys!" My dad hollered through the door.

I hopped up and opened the door. "Thanks, Dad. We'll be right out."

After Dad left the room, Nick said, "Your dad is so cool!"

"You're right about that. He - "

"My dad would NOT be so accommodating! I don't think he suspects anything ... yet, ... but someday - I'll hafta tell them. It won't be pretty!"

"Yah, my parents have been cool about it. I dunno if they know the extent that Kev and I have fooled around."

"I don't have any brothers, but I suspect all brothers mess around if they're close at all. and ... you have your parents trained pretty well. I can't believe he actually knocked!"

"He's walked in on me and Mike before. I don't think he wants that to happen again."

Nick closed the door partially and whispered, "Did you see him eyeing our ... boners?"

"I was hoping you didn't ... see that. My dad's no one's fool."

"Cool people - that's what both your parents are."

When we walked back out to the back yard, Kevin said, We're having strawberry shortcake. But ... Nick ... there's an extra piece of raw steak here ... if you'd rather!"

I shot my brother a pained, unbelieving look. He smirked. I flipped him off, angrily. "If only my brother was a cool as my parents are!" I said under my breath to Nick.

"Kyle - Kevin loves you. He's worried about you. He's still trying to ... process ... what we told him earlier. Give him some slack."

My heart melted. Is this guy real? It seems each moment I see a deeper ... better ... layer of him.

"If you'd rather have the last steak," Said Dad, "I'll throw it on the grill, Nick."

"Yeah," said Kevin, "I sometimes can't get enough protein either. No one here would blame you!"

"You wanna share it?" Nick asked Kevin. "It's a huge piece of meat."

"Uh -- well -- yeah, now that I think of it. But you can leave it on the grill a bit longer for me, Dad."

"I'll just put your on first, Kev." Dad said. "You guys probably still will want some shortcake after, huh?"

"I'll pass." Said Nick. "I kinda lost my sweet tooth after two years in Europe. They don't do sugar that much."

"What?" Mom said. "What about all that German and Swiss Chocolate?"

"Yeah, that seems to be the way they satisfy their need for sugar -- with candy. But the pastries are ... not so much. And I've never been a chocolate fan.

"You were in Europe for two years?" Said Mom. "Were you studying there?"

"Not in the normal way you think about it. I was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." There were some blank stares. "You know -- the Mormons?"

"OHHhhh! The Mormons! We have some neighbors who are Mormons. They're wonderful people! Nick, excuse me but ... are Mormons Christian?"

"Mom!" Said Kevin.

"Well, I just - "

"He just said the church's name is the Church of Jesus Christ. Does that sound Christian?" I smiled.

Mom looked perplexed, and then said, "It's just ... oh! Hmph! Well I feel silly!"

"That's funny, in a way. And it's okay -- really! Mrs. -- er -- Chrissy, I got that wherever we went. So you're not alone."

"Maybe sometime you can tell us a little about what you believe."

Nick's eyes sparkled. "I'd like that."

"You're steaks are ready!" Said Dad.

This time both of them used knives and forks to eat. And when they were done, Kevin DID have a huge dish of strawberry shortcake. When they were finished, Nick said, "I probably should be getting home -- so you can get your homework done, Kyle. I know you have to take Mike up to USC tomorrow."

"USC -- why??!!" Asked Kevin."

"Your coach wants to meet him. Karston told him about Mike's accident and his amazing recovery -- and Mike's determination."

We were walking toward the door and Kevin followed us out. As soon as the door was closed, Kevin said -- "Dude! Nick -- do you play football?"

"I LOVE football, but - "

"Why don't you go with them tomorrow?! If coach wants to meet Mike ... I KNOW he'll want to meet you -- if you can show him what you can do."

"Sorry, Kevin, but I've applied and been accepted at BYU and -- I won't be playing football. It'd be an unfair advantage."

"Dude! What're you saying? You'd be awesome -- oh! -- I guess you're right. It'd take a lot of -- will power -- or something -- for me to turn that opportunity down!"

"Don't you think it'd get kinda boring after awhile?"

"Maybe ... I suppose -- after about 4 years!" We all laughed.

"But seriously, I'd feel ... dishonest -- or something. I HATE being -- this way - I mean - I love the way it feels ... sometimes ... but ... " His voice trailed off.

"Yeah, I know what you're saying." I commiserated.

"I think he's talking about being a vamp, Kye." Said Kevin

"Oh -- of course he was, but - "

"I'm not thrilled about that either -- being gay, I mean -- but I'm getting more comfortable with it." He looked at me -- all I can say is it looked adoringly -- "and ... knowing Kyle has made it a lot easier."

"Well, maybe I'll see you guys tomorrow in L.A." Said my brother. "I'll leave you two to say g'bye."

Kevin went into the house and at the moment the door closed, it hit me. It hit me like a ton of bricks! How could this be happening? First Mike and now ... SHIT!

"What's wrong, Kye?" Said Nick, seeing my panicky look.

"BYU!!???" You're going to BYU??! That's ... 1000 miles away!"

"Only 700."

"What's the difference?"

"About 6 hours ... for you. You can come visit me sometimes. You ever been to Provo?"

I looked like him like he was from outer space. "700 miles is more like 12 hours!" I was hurt.

Nick smiled -- it looked like patiently -- and explained, "I meant the difference between 700 and 1000 miles was 6 hours for you."

"You keep saying, `for me'. Any way I look at it - " I had tears on my cheeks ... tears of sadness -- and anger.

This time, he gently wiped MY face and said, "That's about 1/2 hour for me." I stared at him for a moment while the cobwebs cleared from my brain. He continued, "I'll see you at least every weekend and ... more often if you want."

"You think you can run there in 1/2 hour?"

"Give or take a few minutes. I've done it. And if I was coming back to you ... it'd be quicker -- believe me!"

"I want to ... believe you."

"Tell you what: Let's go there Saturday morning. I'll show you the campus and where I trained for my mission. And the temple there is ... well, kind of spacey -- in maybe a 1960's kind of way." He got more excited as he spoke.

"But -- how would we -- No! You can't carry me to Utah!"

"Yes -- I can! I've done it twice -- with luggage -- and the first time with a huge duffle nearly as heavy as you. No extra cost for luggage!" He grinned. "You'd be easier. The luggage couldn't hold on!"

"Wha -- why -- why did you - "

"Mom and Dad don't know that I didn't fly home. I flew from Hungary to Salt Lake City -- to ... help out Elder Snow. He returned before me and was having a hard time adjusting. Then I ... ran home from there, and just ... appeared at the front door."

My mouth was agape. He continued. "I followed the highway at first, but last time, I started taking short cuts. As time goes by, I'll find even faster routes -- and ... close your mouth, Kye! I think that flies want your short cake!" He giggled.

"Saturday, huh?" I said, still dazed. "Do I need to pack anything?"

"It's only for the day -- unless you want to -- we'd have to find a place to stay."

"No -- I'd just as soon come home. We can stay in my room Saturday night."

"See -- that's one of the things I love about you! You can see possibilities. Anyway, I better go." I leaned forward for a kiss. He grabbed me and before I knew what was happening, we were beside the house, behind a large bush. "Heh! Your brother was watching -- peeking out the window at us."

Then he kissed me and I -- rose to the occasion. His kisses were so hot for being so ... cool. And insulated by two layers of denim -- his hardness against mine seemed normal.

"Bye, Babe!" He said. And, POOF! - he was gone. Then, as quickly, Poof! - he was back."

"You're making me dizzy!" I said.

"Your car's still at my house -- or I mean out front of Mikes."

"Oh -- yeah."

He picked me up and set me down -- gently -- by my car. Then we kissed again and he loped over to his house.

I sat in my car for about five minutes, processing what had just happened. I drove home and when I came into the house, everyone was gone -- to bed. I went to my room and Kevin was there.

"Where'd you go, Kye? One moment you were in the front yard and the next - "

"I'd appreciate if you wouldn't spy on me." I said. It was dark, so I couldn't see his expression.

"Sorry."

I slipped into bed and immediately, Kevin's hands were caressing my butt. I turned and looked into his eyes, which I could see up this close. "Not gonna happen, Bro. I'm going with Nick, now."

"That didn't make a difference when you were going with Mike."

"This is different. Night."
