The Man with the Jeep Chapter 1

They clambered into the old Jeep and headed out. Andrew loved this Jeep, and his mind drifted back to the first time he saw it at the beginning of last summer...

He had already gone out on a few dates with John by then. Nothing fancy, just a movie here and a lunch there. He already knew that he liked John a lot, but Andrew had learned from past experience that not all guys are as they appear at the beginning, so while he enjoyed those times, he kept his thoughts of a future with John to mere daydreams.

John was a lot more of a talker than Andrew, but Andrew didn't mind. He enjoyed hearing him tell stories of his past or observations from the day. His tales were always woven with humor and insight, and that made everything interesting. Andrew found himself captivated time and again with the conversations they had. Andrew would share as well, but he always felt that his life was kind of boring and dry compared to the vibrant pulse that seemed to come from the man on the other side of the table.

One day, John asked him if he would be willing to accompany him on an errand he had to run that Friday evening. Apparently it had to be done that night and John knew that he would sometimes get sleepy after a long day's work at the office, so he thought it would be best to have some company along for the drive so he wouldn't drift off.

Andrew's heart leaped at the opportunity to get to know him more, so after a moment's pause he said he would love to go.

"How long do you think it will take?" Andrew asked.

"I'm not sure exactly, but I would like to leave around three to try to beat traffic and I would guess we might not get back until 11 or 12."

"Well I don't have to work Saturday, so that should be fine."

John looked relieved as he smiled. "Thank you, Andrew. I really appreciate this!"

"You're welcome. I'm happy I can help!"

For the days leading up to the trip, Andrew found himself distracted thinking about the upcoming drive with John. Hours of time alone with the guy he had the biggest crush on. So many things could happenÉ What would happen? Would John get tired of him? Would he discover a dark side to John? Would his hopes to find a kindred spirit be dashed yet again? In the end, he decided that this would be a perfect opportunity to find out if there might be real potential between them.

Friday morning came and Andrew got a text from John: 'I just wanted to check in with you and confirm that you can still help me out this evening.'

'Of course!' Andrew texted back.

'Thanks, man. I will pick you up at your place @3 then. I really appreciate it and I'm looking forward to it.'

'Me too! See you at three!'

Andrew had a really hard time being productive that day, but somehow he made it through work without incident and even got done early so he would be ready to go when John picked him up.

Andrew rushed home to clean up a bit and change clothes. He went to wash his hands at the sink and looked up to see a 6'1" blonde guy with a so-called "swimmer's build" looking back at him. All he saw was skin and bones and wished for the millionth time he had more bulk. To be fair, he admitted to himself, he wasn't emaciated or anything and his muscles had great definition, he just wished they didn't look so small. Working outside bleached his hair nearly white and gave him a really nice tan that set off his crystal blue eyes. Apparently, some guys liked that look; Andrew just wished he was one of them. It must be human nature, he mused as he dried his hands, to want what we don't have.

At 2:55, Andrew heard John swing his small BMW into the driveway, but it wasn't until exactly 3:00 that he rang the doorbell. Man, was he prompt! Andrew was ready to go, of course. He was actually ready 15 minutes early and spent the remaining time twitching and fretting. This is ridiculous, he kept telling himself. It's just a drive! But his nerves were not listening.

"Well hello there, Mr. Prompt!" said Andrew as he swung the door open.

"Hey! Are you ready to go?"

"As a matter of fact I am!"

"Right on. Mind if I use your bathroom before we head out?"

"Of course not, come on in. It's right over here," said Andrew as he led the way around the corner and pointed to a door on the left.

"Thanks! Also, you might want to grab a jacket just in case," said John as he closed the door behind him.

Andrew got his coat and wondered if he should grab long pants as well. It was summer, but his Boy Scout training from years ago kicked in and he ran to his room to grab some jeans just in case.

John came out just as Andrew was on his way back. "Good idea," he said. "It's always good to be prepared."

Once they were outside, Andrew paused to bolt the door. He nearly ran into John when he turned around to head for the car. He was so close he could smell his subtle cologne. Andrew could have sworn he didn't look quite this good yesterday at lunch. And that grinÉ

"What?" asked the startled Andrew.

"Oh nothing," chuckled John as he turned back toward the car.

They got in the car and headed toward the mountains.

"Where are we going, by the way?" asked Andrew.

"Do you need to know, or can it be a surprise?" John asked, with a quick mischievous glimpse at his passenger.

"I suppose I can be surprised, but I kind of like to know how far we are going so I can pace myself mentally."

John laughed. "We will be on the road for less than 20 minutes before the first stop."

"Oh! Okay," said Andrew. Apparently this wasn't quite going to be the extended road trip he had expected after all.

"You okay, buddy?"

"Yeah, of course! I just thought we were going to be on the road for a while, that's all."

"Ah, well not exactly, but we do have a lot of ground to cover. You'll see what I mean."

The drive through the foothills was pleasant with pretty views and not too much traffic. They began to talk about their dreams and future plans. John worked in an insurance agency, but was getting a little bored with it and wanted to branch out into property management and real estate, where he could still meet people, but do it on the go and not be stuck at a desk all day. Andrew was hoping to start a landscaping company and combine his artistic side and love of plants with his business degree. They definitely weren't the same goals, but they just might be able to fit togetherÉ

Just as John had promised, he pulled off the road about 20 minutes later to take a dirt driveway that led to an old garage tucked under some trees. It looked like the same abandoned ramshackle Quonset hut used in all those horror movies. It was all too easy to picture a psycho wielding a rusty chainsaw to defend his territory.

"Have you ever been up here in these woods?" John asked.

"No," said Andrew. "I mean, I've taken the road up to the lodge at the top of the mountain to go skiing, but that's about the only time I've been up here. I've never stopped along the way. I tend to go to the beach if I leave town."

"Well I think you'll like it. I'll be right back."

John got out and walked up to the peeling old brown door, unlocked it, and went inside.

'Should I have gone with him?' Andrew wondered. He had hesitated because the place looked so foreboding, but he didn't want to be alone outside either. 'He didn't say to join him, but he didn't say NOT to go with him either. What if he's in danger? Oh Geez, I have GOT to stop letting my imagination run away with me,' he said to himself. He willed himself to calm down. The battle waged in his head for a few minutes and he was about to go inside and check on John when the old aluminum garage door swung up, and out he came, driving an old red beat up Jeep. He parked it next to the BMW.

"Time to change steeds," he said with a smile.

"What?" asked Andrew.

"We are switching cars. That one won't make it to where we need to go, so hop in while I put the car in the garage. You can stash your stuff in one of those lockboxes in the back."

"Okay," said Andrew, gathering his coat and jeans and getting out of the car.

He found an empty box and put his gear inside. He turned to look as John pulled into the garage and noticed that the inside was surprisingly clean and caught a glimpse of what looked like another car under a cover. So much for rusty chainsaws and the Boogie Man, he laughed to himself. John closed the doors and locked up the garage before he rejoined Andrew in the Jeep.

"That was a lot nicer on the inside than it looked from outside," Andrew remarked.

"Yeah. When Dad first built it, the outside looked great too, but it kept getting broken into, so he hired an artist to make it look as dilapidated as possible."

"Are you serious? You made it look terrible on purpose?"

"Yep! We had to do something because we were tired of finding it thrashed every time we came down. So we `scarified' it and set up some...unique security systems to protect it. It's been fine ever since. And I pity the poor soul that tries to break in now!"

"What kind of systems?" asked an intrigued Andrew.

"Ne'er you wurry yer pritty li'l head about that rat now, boy!" John said in his best hillbilly drawl. "You just might'n be regrettin' it!"

"Okay, okay," laughed Andrew. But he loved a mystery and still wondered...

"So where are we headed?"

"Oh, up there," John said, waving up the hill in a general fashion.

"Is there a road?"

"No. Why do you think we switched cars?"

"I'm not retarded!" Andrew replied smartly. "I meant is there at least a path?"

"Yeah, kind of. No one gets up here that often anymore, so it's not super maintained or anything. We find trees fallen down across it at times, so we always keep a chainsaw in the Jeep just in case."

'What is it with the chainsaw theme?' Andrew asked himself.

Then John started up the Jeep and wheeled it through the clearing toward the trees at the far side. Andrew felt the rising sense of adventure as they went through the trees and began to weave through the brush. A Jeep isn't like a "real" carÑor at least not this one. It had no doors, no top, and even the windshield was folded down and lashed to the hood. It was an indescribable feeling to travel in it. Like you were part of the world in which you traveled. The incredible beauty and smells of nature with the brush of the breeze all combined to provide a rapturous experience.

"Wow," breathed Andrew after a while.

"What are you `wow'ing about?"

"Nature is just amazing! I get so used to life in the city that I tend to forget to get out of town. I feel like an outsider here."

"You did say you were a Boy Scout and loved being away from civilization, didn't you?"

"Sure, but that was years ago. ThisÉ" Andrew trailed off for a moment. "This is now, andÉ" he paused again. "Thank you for bringing me along."

"You are most welcome, buddy."

Andrew noticed the road getting rougher as they climbed, but John had obviously been this way a hundred times and knew just when to slow down before a deep dip in the trail or dodge a particularly large rut. Andrew stopped puzzling over what kind of an errand they were on and let himself be swept away in the moment and simply enjoy the ride. It was nearly perfect. In his wildest dreams, there was only one thing that could make it better, and it might be present even now. Or rather he might be.

He looked over at John and just took him in. He was about six feet tall with dark hair just long enough to betray its curly nature but not enough to look messy. He had just a few wisps of gray at his temples that were echoed in his neatly trimmed beard. Through the thin t-shirt, Andrew followed his surprisingly solid shoulder muscles to his clearly defined triceps and biceps that bulged nicely as he turned the steering wheel of the Jeep. Andrew could see his solid pecs stretching his shirt sideways before dropping to a stomach that was no washboard, but not bulging over his belt either. That was when it dawned on him what was different about John today: he had never worn a t-shirt and shorts before. On the most casual of their previous dates, John had worn jeans and an untucked dress shirt. Never a short-sleeved shirt and definitely not shorts! Andrew let his gaze drop to take in John's legs. They were thick and tanned and covered in lovely golden-brown hair. He remembered quite well that John's ass was perfectly perky from when he joined him for lunch dates wearing his work slacks, but picturing it furry like his legs took Andrew's breath away. He ventured a peek into the driver's lap and saw a nice sized bulge there too. Andrew reminded himself that pants just bunch up there when you sit whether or not the wearer has anything to fill the space with.

Andrew had to remind himself of this a second later when he realized with a start that he had been staring at John for far too long and could feel the bulge in his own pants was far from empty. He quickly looked up and happened to spot John catching a glance into his eyes with a smile. Oh crap, thought Andrew, busted! He quickly looked back out into the forest hoping he didn't blush as madly as it felt like he did.

After they had gone a little farther, Andrew realized that they had hardly spoken since they left the clearing by the garage. Usually John kept the conversation going when Andrew didn't know what to say. This was new...

"Penny for your thoughts?"

John stole another sideways glance at him. "It looked like you were at peace for the first time ever and I didn't want to interrupt it with my babbling," he said chuckling.

"You don't babble at all. I really enjoy hearing your stories."

"Oh, do you now?"

"Yes I do. You seem to whisk me away every time."

John smiled even broader. "Well that is interesting. Very interesting indeed." He seemed to be laughing to himself at some inside joke.

"What?"

"Nothing," he said, chuckling. "It just reminded me of something."

"What?"

"Is that your new favorite word?"

"What?"

"Yes, that one," he said grinning ear to ear.

"Oh shut up, Doofus!"

"Want to try to make me?"

"What are we, five years old now?"

"Hey, I've been waiting since first grade to use that line again and you are the lucky recipient!"

"You are a regular comedian, you know that?" Andrew said, only half kidding.

"Well I like being regular, you know. I don't like the taste of Metamucil."

"Oh my God!" groaned Andrew. "Stop already!"

"OK, OK," John replied, laughing.

"How much farther are we going?" asked Andrew, "I need a bathroom or something soon."

"Well there is actually something just a little ways ahead, if that works for you."

"You're in the driver's seat."

"As a matter of fact I am!" he said proudly.

Andrew gave him a withering look.

About five minutes later, John pulled to a stop and pointed to the left. "You see that little red roof there?"

Andrew followed the line of his beautiful arm and spotted the little splotch of red about 20 yards away tucked under a tree. "Yeah, I see it."

"There are the facilities you requested, my lord!"

"Oh brother!"

"Nope, and I am very glad of that fact!"

Andrew hopped out and walked around the front of the Jeep before John could come up with yet another over-used quip.

"Hey!" John hollered as Andrew took off through the bushes, "One last thing!"

"Oh come on, John! I have to go! What is it?"

"When you are finished, you will find some stairs alongside it. I'll meet you at the top of those."

"Really? You are leaving me to fend for myself in this forest?" Andrew asked incredulously, hoping his very sudden and very real fear of being abandoned in the middle of nowhere didn't shine through like a beacon.

"I really am asking you to do this," John said in a gentler tone. "I promise it will be worth your while, but you will have to trust me on that."

Andrew's mind raced: 'I've known this guy for six weeks and I really like him, but what do I really know about who he is? He could leave me high and dry. I knowÑit's happened before. But I really don't think he would. Or is that my infatuation talking? I really have to go to the bathroom! I can see dusk approaching, but I can probably get back down the hill by myself if I need to. I don't think he would actually leave me here. Maybe it's a trick to see how far he can string me along. I really have to go to the bathroom! Is that really an outhouse out here in the middle of absolute nowhere? Maybe...' While he was still thinking, he heard his voice say, "Fine! I'll see you at the top!" and he turned and made for the outhouse.
