The Man with the Jeep

Chapter 22

Andrew spent a few moments looking back and forth between the screen and the mirror above the sink trying to confirm it was real. He finally stuck his arm out as far as he could and watched his arm wave back through the screen.

If there was a room behind that wall, there had to be a door, so he started looking more carefully at the wall between the sink and the shower. Now that he knew that something had to be there, he could make out an even seam at the bottom where the wall did not actually touch the floor. He couldn't see one at the top due to the angles, but it could easily be the same situation. As for the sides, he couldn't find a single trace of where a door would be. He was about to give up when he noticed that a small piece of stone next to the mirror looked like it was breaking off. He wiggled it a little and found it was actually plastic painted to look like it was part of the stone surrounding it. Fiddling with it for a moment, he discovered that it swung up to reveal a keyhole.

His breath caught in excitement. Could it be?

He took the key out from under his shirt where it hung from the dog tag chain around his neck and tried it.

It was a perfect fit.

He turned the key to the left and heard the clack of a bolt moving inside the wall, though it didn't immediately seem to open anything. There was still no handle or anything, so he pulled on the key itself and found another surprise. He couldn't find a door because there wasn't one: the entire wall began to swing toward him. It was so well balanced that it was easy to move despite its obvious weight.

Andrew felt the rush of discovery and a mystery solved as the wall opened to reveal a small alcove. The walls were comprised of vertical wooden slats that ran floor to ceiling.

He could tell they were cedar from the pleasant smell. The right side and facing walls looked clean and featureless except for a set of switches on the side wall. He flipped the nearest one to turn on the lights. With the extra light, he could see the back side of the door/wall matched perfectly, although it had a large push button like he had seen before inside walk-in refrigerators. Where the fourth wall would be was simply open into the bigger room he had seen from the cameras.

He closed the big door behind himÑ-still marveling at how easily it swungÑand walked into the bigger room. He saw that the box in the center enclosed a large heater. That was when he realized that this entire room was a sauna. This outhouse just kept getting more and more upscale! This room was the size of a small bedroom, making it the largest sauna he had ever seen and easily bigger than the one at the gym.

He walked around the center island and was about to head back into the other room when he noticed the outhouse was now occupied. Ron and Brad had come in and each claimed a stall.

Andrew was nervous now. Should he sneak out and leave before they were finished? He wasn't really up for meeting them yetÑhe was certain he'd give himself away that he had watched them play just a few minutes ago. Should he stay here? That should be fine. He had been here several times and never knew this sauna even existed. But they were clearly more familiar with this campground than he was. What if they knew about this room already? What if they caught him in here? How would he explain himself? Then again, he had to use a key to get in and had closed the door behind him, so unless this key wasn't as special as he had assumed, they couldn't get in anyway. He decided he would wait them out.

But could they see through the glass? He never had, but then he hadn't been looking to, either. Just as he heard the very muted sound of a flushing toilet, he remembered he had turned the light on. If anything would give him away, that would be it.

He dove for the light switch and flipped it off as quickly as he could. Then he went back to sit on one of the benches.

He watched as Ron walked up to the sink and turned on the faucet.

It felt very strange to be right on the other side of the glass from someone who was using it as a mirror. He felt like he was intruding on a personal moment as Ron looked at himself in the mirror. Andrew was also certain he'd get caught. But Ron made no indication that he could see him through the glass. And Brad didn't either when he joined him at the sink a moment later.

Perplexed, Andrew watched as both men looked oddly at the same spot in the glass for several moments while they spoke. He could hear a mumble of their voices but couldn't make out anything they said. Was there a hole in the glass? Was he reflecting light somehow? He was confused until he realized they were looking into each other's eyes through the reflection of the mirror. Disconcerting, but fascinating.

Ron suddenly blushed and looked down, clearly a little embarrassed by something Brad said to him, which made Brad smile his bright mischievous smirk.

They moved over to the side to dry their hands, and then Brad gently took Ron's chin in his hands, raising it up so Ron had to meet his eyes. He must have said something sweet, because Ron teared up before Brad bent down to kiss him tenderly and then wrap him in a hug. After a moment's hesitation, Ron hugged him back. When they broke apart, Brad put both of his hands to the side of Ron's face and wiped his tears away with his thumbs. Ron smiled, and Brad grabbed one of his hands and practically pulled him back outside.

With the coast clear, Andrew left the sauna and headed back to the shower. He woke up the display screen and made his way back into the security system. He wanted to make sure everything was just how he had found it. He tapped the garage icon and made sure it was set to the same camera as when he had opened it, then did the same thing for the grotto (also making sure the audio was muted again) and the outhouse.

As he was about to close the screen, he noticed a blue dot in one corner with a "3" in it. What could that be? He was about to tap it when his phone burbled in his pocket.

"Hello," he answered.

"Hey there!" came John's voice. "Where did you go? I thought you were going to wait for me here at camp."

"I just came up to the outhouse."

"Oh?"

Andrew could tell that was a weighted response that meant there were questions.

"Yeah," he said as nonchalantly as he could. "I needed to use the facilities."

"I see," John said cheerfully, though clearly not buying it. "How long before you can get back?"

"I'm on my way now," Andrew assured him as he closed out the apps on the shower screen.

"Okay, see you soon!"

"Roger that."

Andrew felt dirty as he hung up and headed back down the mountain.

Why couldn't he just be completely open and honest all the time? He had clearly developed some bad habits somewhere along the line. Sure, it would be easy to blame it on suspicious former boyfriends or justify it with the circumstances that led him here, but deep down he knew that those were just handy excuses and not the real issue.

He liked to pat himself on the back for not being a liar, but his well-developed knack for using misdirection and avoiding the questions he didn't want to answer was really no better when it came down to it.

John seemed to see through those pretty easily, and it was making Andrew feel...ashamed. That was it: he felt ashamed of himself. He would automatically default to answering questions that way, and when John didn't buy it, he would feel cheap and disingenuous. John was amazing and didn't deserve that kind of treatment at all. He was worth complete honesty. He constantly demonstrated his commitment even when Andrew was coming apart at the seams.

Why was it so hard? It had to be fear. He was afraid if John saw all his faults, he would run the other way. And Andrew wouldn't blame him in the least. He was really messed up in a lot of ways. Some of which would probably take time to fix. And patience.

Andrew admitted to himself that he didn't know if this relationship was going to work.

But patience seemed to be a strong suit for John. He appeared to actively make space for Andrew to be himself and encourage his individuality. Even when he broke down. Even while he pretended to believe Andrew's clearly shoddy attempts to be mysterious or misleading. Why would he do that? What an unnecessary headache and effort to bring upon himself just to keep a relationship going. It would be understandable if he were all that, but he wasn't handsome enough or rich enough or talented enough or confident enough to justify that, was he?

John was way out of his league and deserved to be with his own kind, not an insecure flawed guy like Andrew was.

Maybe he should just break it off now before it went too far along. It would only get harder to break up the longer they were together, wouldn't it? Better to nip it in the bud and save themselves any greater heartache...

ÑA couple hours earlierÑ

John was pleased that he had been able to handle the situation so swiftly. Only a few minutes after he had arrived, everything had been resolved and everyone was reasonably satisfied. Now he could get back to Andrew!

"Alright, Coop. I'm going to head back up now. Let me know if you need anything else, but I have someone waiting for me."

"He's a handsome one too, isn't he?" Coop replied with a comically big wink.

"That he is!" John grinned. "Why do you think I'm in such a hurry to get back?"

"Can't imagine," answered the older man drolly. "I can't remember the last time you dated anyone."

"You can't blame me for being picky, can you?"

"No, I'd be the last one to do that," Coop said shaking his head sadly. "But I was starting to worry on your behalf that you might stop looking. You're good people and deserve that happiness."

"Thanks, Coop."

"Now get out of here already!" he said, making shooing motions with his arms. "Go take good care of that boy!"

"Yes, sir!" John replied brightly.

"`Sir' he says," muttered Coop as he walked back to his office.

John smiled as he climbed back aboard Old Red. That old man was "good people" too, and John hoped he was at least as happy as he seemed to be.

He made his way back to the campsite in good time, but Andrew was nowhere to be seen. Where could he have gone?

He reached for his phone to text him, and found he had some alerts that had popped up while he was driving. Alerts from his security app. That is odd: he only gets alerts when someone else accesses the system.

Then he remembered Andrew's curiosity and questions yesterday and smiled. Of course!

He tapped to access the system himself and was puzzled. There were seven alerts of entry, but all of them were for mere seconds each with several minutes between attempts. He pulled up the outhouse cameras knowing that would be where Andrew would have gone. He could see Andrew pacing from the shower to the door and back, sometimes going outside completely in his indecision. John felt sympathy for him. He could imagine how hard it was for Andrew to wrestle with himself like this.

Andrew had no way of knowing that John had baited him and purposely made him watch as John slowly and carefully entered the password to be sure Andrew would remember it. He wanted to see what Andrew would do with it, and with any luck, that moment was at hand.

After a few more aborted entries and lots of pacing, Andrew had finally made his decision. John watched as Andrew pulled up the site icon screen and saw his finger hover over "Treehouse" before he tapped on "Garage."

He followed as Andrew soon moved on to "Grotto" and started changing camera views. He was as quick to learn the system as John knew he would be, not that it was hard. Andrew's expression turned to more concentration, but John wasn't sure why, so John replaced his view of the outhouse for the grotto view Andrew was looking at.

Ah! Ron and Brad were there today! How would Andrew react to that?

John switched back to the outhouse view to watch Andrew spy on the other two. He saw him get hard and absentmindedly fish his rod out of his shorts and stroke it while he watched the other two go at it.

He saw Andrew shuffle a few of the controls and realized he had found the audio controls. No moss on that one, as his grandfather would say.

Andrew's jacking pace picked up and soon the shower stones were decorated with another of his hefty loads. Just like the fastidious man John knew him to be, he immediately cleaned up every trace.

John knew that the guys he had been spying on would be long gone by the time Andrew was done, and sure enough, he quickly moved on after he turned his attention back to the screen.

Where to was the big question, and John had missed the moment to see what he had picked, so he switched to what he called Big Brother Mode, where his feed would come directly from the access point chosen.

As soon as he clicked it, he figured out why Andrew had chosen those spots to look at. It pleased him that Andrew respected his preference even when given full access.

Now that Andrew was looking around the outhouse page, John started having second thoughts. Maybe it was too soon to reveal everything...

He had to man up now. It was his brilliant plan to let Andrew in and now he would have to take the hit if it came to it.

He watched Andrew flip through the cameras one by one until he came to the sauna views and saw him do a couple double-takes of the mirror and the screen.

John smiled to himself.

Come on, Andrew: you've got this.

He saw Andrew search the wall for clues, stumble across the access cover, and open it up.

He almost cheered aloud as he watched Andrew pull the key out from the necklace around his neck and try it in the lock. Finally!

He switched camera views to see the expression of wonder and satisfaction on Andrew's face as he swung open the portal. That right there was what he wanted for himÑevery day, if he could manage it.

And it felt great that there was one less secret between them, too.

He had to admit he was pleased that Andrew only gave the entry area a cursory look before he moved into the saunaÑthe rest could be saved for later.

He saw Andrew start and look through the window at Ron and Brad as they came in. Now it was getting interesting! How would Andrew react?

He quickly turned off the light, which made it harder for John to watch him, but at least he didn't run out like John half expected him to do.

Ron and Brad had their moment and left. John was rooting for those two, hoping their complimentary strengths would help each other instead of rip them apart. They had come a long way already, so there was hope that would continue.

Then he saw Andrew moving back to the shower panel. If John stopped him now, he could save the biggest jolt for later.

He quickly closed the security app and dialed Andrew's number.

"Hello."

Was that nervousness John detected in his voice?

"Hey there! Where did you go? I thought you were going to wait for me here at camp."

"I just came up to the outhouse."

Uh huh, sure, buster!

"Oh?"

"Yeah, I needed to use the facilities."

"I see," John said, trying not to laugh at the obvious deflection. "How long before you can get back?"

"I'm on my way now."

What he wanted to say was "Um, I can see you, and you're still standing there," but what came out insteadÑmercifullyÑwas "Okay, see you soon!"

"Roger that."

Andrew closed the app and immediately headed out.

That was close! It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but he had to figure out the best way to tell Andrew the next surpriseÉ
