TO BE A BROTHER

by Macout Mann

Chapter XI

Oscar and Peter

Four years had passed.

First Tom then Jim graduated, but their relationship continued to remain as close as it ever was. With the help of some brothers Tom joined a Chicago Public Relations Firm, and in a little over a year became a rising star. Although Jim's grades in high school were not outstanding, once he reached college he excelled, despite his wealth of "extra-curricular" activities with Tom and others. After graduation, he enrolled in Midwestern's McCormick School of Business, which is in downtown Chicago, so he and Tom still had ample opportunity to relate. Benefactors Scholarship Trust still funded Jim's schooling.

As a sophomore and junior Jim was able to room with Tom. During finals his junior he became acquainted with a freshman, Oscar Kline, with predictable results. So for his senior year Oscar became his roomie. And at the Libra Convocation the following Fall Jim was proposing that Oscar become a brother.

The Brothers of Aries and Libra had undergone changes. When Jim became a brother, there were a total of fifty-one "actives." There had never been a target number of brothers. The group depended solely on the desire of brothers to propose like-minded guys for membership. So four years later the number had dropped to forty-two. The forty-two, however, were more active and more likely to attend convocations, so the decline was not a problem.

The bigger change came as a result of Reg's advancing age. When he became thirty, he would no longer be active and could no longer be the Elder. So plans had been made to reorganize.

Rather than Craig Pirie being the sole underwriter of the group, members and former members agreed to contribute to the 501(c) (3) as they were able. The Pirie brothers would continue to be major supporters. The Elder would be elected and would serve until he could no longer be an active. A legal counsel would be elected from the brother attorneys, and the Counsellor would also serve as treasurer and disburser. Previously, only Malcolm Pirie attended convocations after ceasing to be active. Under new rules any contributing old boy, called a "sustainer," might attend all or part of meetings. In fairness, they would book and pay for their own rooms, but could have access to the penthouse and all the benefits it had to offer.

The changeover began in 2017. The first elections were held at the 2018 Aries Convocation. Tom Parrish was elected Elder unanimously. One might think that Reg influenced the vote, but he didn't. After all, the Counsellor was in charge of the money and the legal stuff. Tom, as the most attractive person any of the brothers had ever met, was ideally suited to do the duties Reg had done, and he could serve until 2026. His first convocation would be Libra 2018.

Oscar Kline didn't know Tom at Midwestern, so when he and Jim arrived for the Aries Convocation, there was nothing to alert Oscar to what was really going on.

Tom did retain 1202 as the Elder's room. 1219 at the other end of the hall was also perpetually to be reserved for whichever Pirie might want to come. Jim and Oscar were assigned 1204.

Physically Oscar Kline was what the brothers were always looking for. He was not an athlete, but in the course of growing up, playing on monkey bars and tossing balls around, he had developed the ideal physique. His Mediterranean complexion was accented by a mop of dark brown hair. His face could have come out of a Renaissance portrait. Jim was sure that he would charm the brothers. And he did, from the moment the two of them first entered the penthouse lounge.

At dinner Tom did the honors for the first time. "You notice," he said, "that both of the Pirie brothers are here to gloat over all my faux pas. It's a good thing their father isn't here. We would have to order a rollaway for the first time."

He welcomed Oscar and another prospective being proposed by Wilson Carrington, who also was to give the lecture next morning. Then most everybody trooped back to the bar.

One of the shirtless bartenders had been replaced by an equally attractive hunk. "Can I come on to the one on the right?" Oscar whispered.

"I think they're off limits," Jim replied. Actually Tom had sampled both of them.

Jim and Oscar chatted with Wilson's prospective, a baby-faced dude named Peter Farrar. The bulge in his tan slim-fit Wranglers showed that he was well named. He was a theology student at an evangelical college in Tennessee, which raised all sorts of questions in Jim's mind that he couldn't ask. He said simply, "I think you're our first theologian."

"Not a theologian, just an enquirer," Peter responded. "I wonder about some of the things that people say the Bible teaches."

"Wilson tells me that Sunday morning you always have a lecture on a religious question," he added.

"Yes," Jim laughed, "not the better attended session I'm afraid. Topics get sort of thorny sometimes. I remember the time I was first here the discussion was about whether St. Paul was a homosexual."

Peter laughed in return. "Try suggesting that to people at my school," he rejoined.

Jim noticed that the liquid in Peter's glass was light brown, and Jim knew the bar didn't serve iced tea.

Both Reg and Malcolm came by and greeted Jim most cordially, and seemed delighted to meet Oscar.

"Do say `hello' to your dad for me," Jim said.

"Oh, he'll be here tomorrow evening. You can say `hello' yourself," Malcolm said. "And don't worry, I've got to leave tomorrow, so a rollaway won't be necessary."

"Dad likes to sleep alone, though," Reg snickered, "so I'll probably have to bed down someplace else."

"I'm sure you won't lack for invitations," Jim laughed.

"So yall are all screwing each other?" Oscar asked as soon as the brothers were out of earshot.

"Damn, it took me two days to figure that out," Jim answered.

"Well, I've just been seeing all these guys go off together two by two, sometimes with a third guy tagging along. And that exchange between you and Mr. Pirie was pretty obvious."

Tom materialized and apologized for not having spent more time with them. "I never realized how much Reg had to do at these things," he admitted.

"I can always see you back in Chicago, and I'm sure you'll make time to get to know Oscar. He just showed me he's a lot quicker study than I was," Jim said.

Tom arched his eyebrow questioningly, and a smiling Jim nodded. Tom would certainly make time to know Oscar.

Yet, only a few moments later he was encountered by Peter.

"Sorry to disturb you Mr. ..."

"Just call me Tom. You're Peter, right?"

"Yeah. Can I ask you something? You seem like a real straight dude."

"I'm not sure I'd say that, Peter. But sure, we want you to know everything about us. Ask away."

"Well, all you guys are having sex with each other, aren't you?" He spoke very fast, as if he expected severe retribution as a result of his question.

For the first time since his father had caught him doing "something he shouldn't," Tom was speechless. But he decided that truth was always the best response to a difficult question.

"Yes," he answered after a pause. "Does that bother you?"

"Wilson didn't let me know," the boy blurted. "We've been doing stuff. And I've even been drinking with him, but..."

It was a tribute to Tom's maturity that he responded by simply saying, "We need to talk, Pete. You don't have to worry about me doing anything. But let's go down to my room."

They left the lounge. Everyone who noticed thought that the ritual introduction to the Elder was to take place, but when they arrived at Room 1202, the scene was quite different.

Tom sat at the table and motioned Peter to the other chair.

"First, Peter, let me say that Wilson did not deceive you when he didn't tell you all about us. Our rules require that prospects discover our sexual activities on their own, by observation. Just as you did.

"I do get feedback from brothers about you prospectives, though, and you don't fit the pattern, dude. So how did you and Brother Wilson get together in the first place?"

"I've never felt I was in the right place," Peter answered. "I've always gone to church. I've always done what my parents wanted me to do. That's why I'm at Four Square College. But my feelings were never where the church told me they ought to be.

"One weekend I snuck away to Nashville. I wanted to see The Grand Ole Opry. I couldn't get in. I was wandering around, and Wilson came by. He asked me what I was doing. He invited me to have coffee with him. We got to talking. He was so understanding. I told him everything. About how I didn't care about girls. Didn't care about getting married. Wondered about what I was hearing from my teachers.

"We went to his hotel. We wound up in bed. Yes. That was what I'd been missing....and needing. But oh, I felt so guilty. He sent me emails that made me feel better and sent me airplane tickets to visit him in Philadelphia. I loved everything we did.

"And yes, I question a lot of the stuff that I've been taught over the years. And I love what Wilson and I do....but I didn't know what was going to happen here."

"And just what do you think is going to happen here?'

"Now, you mean? Sex."

Tom opened his fly, revealing a dick, not quite hard. "Peter," he first said, "nobody here is going to get you to do anything you aren't completely comfortable doing. "but," he asked, "how would you feel about sucking my dick, if I asked you to?"

Peter stared, but he didn't answer. Tom picked up the phone and called the bar. "Page Brother Wilson," he ordered.

"What the fuck?" Wilson answered. "I was just getting with Brett. He's already looking around for somebody else."

"Sorry," Tom said, "I need you to come down to 1202."

"So you think you can order us around now?" Wilson angrily responded.

"Peter's here," Tom calmly said. "And not to feel my dick up his ass. I have some questions for both of you. If Brett can't wait, there'll be plenty of others."

Wilson Carrington was 26, a typical brother, handsome beyond words. He lived in Philadelphia but his business took him all over the country, and he had no compunction about messing around with anybody he happened to meet anywhere. Usually it was a one night stand, but Peter was different. He was attracted by the boy's innocence. That had led to a longer term relationship and the decision to propose him.

When Wilson arrived, Tom quickly brought him up to date. "Peter said he was distressed, because you hadn't told him what goes on here," he concluded, "but I sense that something much more serious is bothering him. I don't think he is committed to our lifestyle. In fact, I think deep down he believes that what we do is wrong...that what you and he do is wrong."

"Well, it's true that we've only had sex in private," Wilson answered. "And I did take his cherry. But he has never resisted sex with me at any time, have you, Peter?"

"No. I love sex, and I love being with you. I just....well Tom showed me his dick and asked how I would like to suck it. I couldn't say. I just don't know.

"I'd like to, but something tells me not to."

"Wilson, I don't really think Peter is a proper candidate," Tom announced.

"No. Please don't send me away. I've liked being here. I've liked meeting everybody. I've..." Peter got on his knees next to Tom's chair. "I'll suck your dick!"

"Not right now, Peter." Tom turned to Wilson. "What do you think?"

"If he wants to stay, I think we should give him a chance."

"I'd like him to talk to Brother Jim Sessions," Tom said. "He's the only guy I know who was a virgin when he first came to a convocation."

Tom again called the bar and had Jim paged. "I'd like you to come down to my room and have Oscar go on to yours," he told Jim. "There's somebody you need to talk to. I'll meet with Oscar while you do."

Then he told Wilson to try to find Brett or whoever. "We'll talk later."

When Jim arrived, Tom filled him in on the previous conversations. "I've got to admit," Jim told Peter, "when we talked upstairs I had lots of questions I wasn't prepared to ask."

"Well, you two have a good talk, while I go next door and get with Oscar."
