I was jarred out of bed on Tuesday morning by a clap of thunder that I thought hit the house it was so loud. I knew the run was off and was tempted to turn over and fall back to sleep. Instead, I went right to the shower and dressed for the office. Downstairs it was coffee and scrambled eggs and toast and the paper. Dad joined me for coffee and I told him I was spending the afternoon at the construction site and got a lecture about my calendar and the need to keep it current and not to plan my day over coffee in the morning. I thought for a minute and then said dad, I understand. I'm still adjusting to being around all the time. Mike, that's not an adjustment and people will start to push back. Dad, I said I GET IT. He laughed and said well if you are not careful Ruth will be dealing with your calendar and you won't have an unscheduled minute. That's a lesion I learned the hard way. Enjoy you day and I'll see you for dinner. As I was leaving Megan appeared, kissed dad, wished me a good day and vanished.

My drive to work was uneventful but it rained hard the entire way. I was glad it was casual dress and my waterproof jacket was useful. I stopped in the cafeteria and thankfully there was coffee ready and I took the long way around to my office. I was mildly surprised how many people were in and working. When I arrived at my office, Ruth was already working, I said good morning and went into my office leaving the door open. I turned on the computer and opened my calendar and updated it, as best I could. Then I grabbed a note pad and started on a to do list. Just then Ruth stuck her head in and asked for a minute of my time. I smiled and asked, do you have an appointment? She laughed and said Mike, I'm the only one that doesn't apply to. She said Mike, I know your dad has been on your back about schedules, that's largely because he was and to an extent still does, find a way to ignore other people's schedule. What we all expect is that if you request a meeting, a days notice is appropriate unless it is after hours and then it be a request. Then she said if you have a flexible thing, that can't easily be mover simple put an * after the event. I said Ruth, thanks and I do understand.

Once I was alone, just sat there thinking and realized that structure was important. I rechecked my schedule and added "" to a few items but left "Mike Time" on Wednesday afternoon as a firm event. I changed Friday to "AP". With that all out of the way I called Bruce at the furniture dealership. We discussed the upcoming trip to Herman Miller and I asked him to set it up with Major Jim. I told him it would be 9 people and that we would be taking our corporate jet. I said the 9 people includes the flight crew. Next on my list was to contact the Army Corps or Engineers. It was a great conversation and we agreed to meet Monday at 8:00 in the morning at our construction site. I immediately put it on my schedule and asked both Majors via email to attend, as I wanted a military presence. It was stilly early and Riley came in and asked if I had time for an update? I said absolutely, you first. We talked about the early stages of the move and that the furniture would be scheduled as floors were available. There would be no installation on any floor except the first floor unless the elevators were inspected and certified. I said, I get that, she asked about the trip and I told her what I knew. Then it was the ground breaking on Thursday. I said it was a short event but that there would be lots of important people there and we should have a large tent and no food but water. I wanted 10 shovels and a ribbon to cut and that I was sure the Major had things under control. I asked that she coordinate things with Major Jim. I told her I would be in Wednesday till noon and out Friday. I added that I was unsure about Saturday but that I didn't expect her in over the weekend. She laughed and said that I shouldn't worry about that. I told her I was going to the construction site this afternoon after lunch and she asked if she could meet me there and I said sure. I'll be there at 1:30 and she said perfect.

Once we were through I went to the cafeteria and refilled my coffee and returned to my office. Then I called the Mayor's office and I was shocked when he took the call. I asked if he would be at the ground breaking, he laughed and said well I was glad to be invited. I hear it is an impressive list of invitees. I laughed and said, well I'm better connected than last time. He said obviously but why you calling that could not wait till Thursday? I said, so we are getting right to it? He said Mike, that's usually your mode. I said fine, we are considering a club and marina on the site of building 2 and was hoping for your assistance! Well Mike, that's an interesting idea and requires zoning and river front regulations. We would have to work together closely and it would need to be a win for both of us. Mr. Mayor, I would not expect anything less. We can talk later next week, say lunch at Oakmont? He said, we can set that up. I said thanks and have a good day. I was thinking that he was in for a real surprise about my idea of what working together would be like. He needed me and the union connections. I called Rocco and we talked about the groundbreaking and that I wanted him right beside me. He said sure. I said I gave the crew paid time to attend, I hope that wasn't an issue? He said I think that's perfect for you and me and I assume you are sending a message to that clown who sits in the Mayor's Office. I said well that's a side effect. Rocco, things will slow down but I want to build a boat club and marina and will use you guys. Also, the installation will be union carpenters. Oh, those Union Reps will be there as well. Rocco simply laughed and said I am really enjoying our relationship. Rocco once this slowdown is over we will rebuild this fucking place. I said, I'll see you Thursday and how about drinks at South Hills after? He said that would be great and we hung up.

As soon as I hung up my office phone rang and it was Major Jim, he said Mike, you certainly had a busy day. I said how so? Well there must be a list 50 people at the groundbreaking and all the workers, a large tent. I laughed and said, sending multiple messages and it will be fun. Mike, you have city, county, state people and now a Congressman at this event so a tent with water just doesn't do it. I laughed and said you forgot an astronaut and a jet jockey with a big time metal. I said Jim, I don't care what's else is there, no alcohol. He said he agreed and that there could be national media there as well. Then I asked so Friday is that to get me to Latrobe to watch Cole? He said well partly, but I have a meeting with AP and that he wanted to see the wonder kid as well. I asked if we're flying VFR or IFR? He said he wasn't sure but He was filing a flight plan but most likely VFR. I said thanks and we hung up.

Just then Ruth stuck her head in and asked, so what is your dad working on? I said Ruth, I don't know but what made you ask? Well he is in salesman mode and so the door is closed and that is always an indication it's a project in the works. I said well time will tell. Once she left, I started on finalizing the Board members and sent a final list to dad and the Major. I looked at the time and damn it was 11:30 and a lot of things were put into motion. I picked up my list of things to do and dad came in and sat down. Mike, I just wanted to say thanks for the talk last night and to let you know that Megan and I will be at Latrobe Saturday and that we will be spending the night at the Mountain View hotel. Cole has a ride home as Liam with be driving both ways, you need the day off and please don't come in here to work. I said dad, please relax, I have a half day tomorrow and I'm going to Latrobe on Friday and so you are aware, the Major and I are flying. He said well, that will be what it becomes and he left saying, I'll see you for dinner. I just said, have a great afternoon and didn't ask what he was working on.

I went to the cafeteria and grabbed some coffee and it was so awful that I poured it out and grabbed a bottle of water. Once again I took the long way back to my office and this time stopped and chatted with a few people asking how they were doing and what they were working on and I was starting to get the idea of what we do here and that there was no department structure, people were scattered al over and people had to leave there computer to talk with people working on the same project. Back at the office I sent Dillon an email asking him to simply add an hour meeting to my schedule, just him and I at his convenience.

I grabbed my special hard had, told Ruth that I would be the construction site and that I was available by phone. I had barely finished say all that and my phone rang and I looked at the number and went into my office and closed the door. I answered saying Coach B this is a surprise, what's going on. He replied, just checking in and I laughed and said well that means there is an issue. He laughed and said well, I was wondering if you were free next Tuesday to meet with me and Coach Conn and a kid we are recruiting. Coach do the three of you play golf? He said yes. I said ok, how about a round of golf and lunch, on me at Oakmont? He said Mike, I need to check on that but it would be great, unless it broke a rule I'm unaware of. I said let me know and we hung up. I wonder who the recruit is but started towards the car. That lasted about 20 feet and it was Tim who grabbed me and asking for a meeting with his team. I said look at my calendar and book it for next week but not Tuesday. He said ok but that I should have everyone clear appointments with Ruth or I won't have a minute to my self. I went back to my office and asked Ruth to join me and we both sat in the guest chairs. I said Ruth, I am struggling with this calendar thing. I'm trying to be cooperative but it seems like I have no control over my day. Mike, people will add things to the schedule and you will notice they are reds. They will stay red until you confirm when they turn green. Don't be pressured by this but this place was running wild and this actually helps manage things. So I take it you were not not shown how to work the schedule? I said correct but how about a quick lesson. She said sure and it took 10 minutes and I was happily on my way to my building.

It was a great ride as the weather had cleared and I was really looking forward to it. I parked put my special hard hat on and went to the construction trailer. There was no one around so I started on a tour of the site. The skin was done on the first floor and it looked a mess as some was rusting and others are not. I had mixed feelings about the brushed aluminum but realized that a more polished look would not last, it was bad enough the we would need window cleaners for the 4th floor. Inside I was totally blown away as there was decking on the top floor. I started up and ran into Allen. We chatted for a while and I got a brief update and we were really ahead of schedule. He said the guys appreciate the paid groundbreaking. He said it means a lot to them. We went up to the 4th floor and the view was outstanding. Then he said you know Mike, you should consider making the 3rd floor steel instead of glass that's a great look and a great statement. I stopped dead in my tracks and asked if that was possible without delaying the project. He said yes and for some reason we have extra steel and we could have more here in a week. It's not special in size or anything and I can cancel some of the glass. I thought for a minute and went outside and looked at the building and said Allen, just do that please. Allen, how was there extra steel ordered? Mike, I was just starting to look into that but I'm guessing there was a mistake in the specs. I didn't react but asked for a report as soon as it was figured out. The reality was that it was a better look but I was unhappy about the potential costly mistake.

I walked over to the vacant plot of land that would be the hub of activity on Thursday and was picturing the building. I called the architects and said that we needed to discuss the building skin and I needed to confirm the look and material. All I know is I want the top floor glass and I want the specs checked on the entire project as I need to avoid needless cost overruns. Then concluded the message with, I'll see you tomorrow. I walked to the river bank and looked at the survey spikes and was very glad to see they went right up to the shore line. I looked at my phone and there were a couple of emails so I went back to the trailer and dealt with them. Looking at the time, I drove to the gym and worked out. I spent some time in the sauna and showered and headed home.

Once at home I changed into gym shorts and a loose t-shirt and called Jim. When he answered I said, I'm still waiting for that call but I guess it is after 9:00. He laughed and said what's up? I said you me and JJ Saturday night here and you fucking owe me. Not for the help, not for defending you to coach but because I'm tired of you ignoring me and for that dumb stunt you let Ash talk you into and then she dumped you. Just how many beers did you have? Jim replied 3. Dude, you owe me 3 hours of punishment and fuck, now I'm inviting Sam. MJ, please don't invite Sam. I said ok then bring a toy. He said, fuck you are serious. I said yes, very and add an enema syringe and a bar of ivory soap. I could hear him take a deep breath and he said ok, what time? I said 7:30 and hung up. It's just time to settle a lot of things. I heard Cole come in and just sat there waiting for him to come upstairs.

I just laughed when he came flying into the room. I said why so excited? MJ, Liam and I are staying overnight in Latrobe and both girls are driving up Friday watching some golf and then we'll, it will be what it becomes. I said so how did Michel pull that off? MJ it was Liam's girl all she did was ask Michel's parents promising that they would room together. I laughed and said and they bought that? Cole shrugged and said, I guess so. He said MJ, dad and mom and your dad will be there Saturday. Cole, the Major and I are flying up Friday. He has a meeting and I'm flying. Cole laughed and said, well I hope you make it. Just then I heard dad and it sounded like Megan, so we went down stairs to see who was cooking. It turned out that no one had an idea and there weren't enough leftovers. I looked at dad and said, THERE IS NO WAY I'M GOING TO THE CLUB. Then Cole asked, can we go to Greentree or is it to late? I said that works for me as long as I'm not driving. There was a brief discussion and we decided to order in. Cole and I ordered chicken salads and Italian dressing. Dad ordered lasagna and Megan a chicken parmigiana. All we had to was wait for the delivery. Dad made Megan a drink and Cole and I had beers. We were chatting and I asked dad how long would it take to get the cabin open? He said one phone call and two days, why? Dad, I'm thinking about having Kyle, Dillon and Riley up for a long working weekend. Megan said, so Riley and 3 guys? I said, well would you want to come along? She laughed and said, NO WAY IN HELL. Well, I guess I ask her and see what she says.

Cole and I had another beer and thankfully the food arrived and the chat turned to mundane things and Cole moved it to golf saying he wanted to be 4 to 6 under for the 2 days. I said Cole that will take a lot of concentration and no distractions. He shot me a look that said SHUT UP. I smiled and changed the subject. Dad and Megan cleaned up and I went to my room and called Beth. It went to voicemail and I simply asked for a returned call. I turned on my computer and checked my schedule and saw Dillon could be free at 10:00 tomorrow and I confirmed the appointment. With that done I saw it was a relatively easy day. I was wondering what would blow that up and my phone rand and it was Beth and I answered with, Good Evening Beth. She said, well the polite Mike. I said Beth, I try. Beth we have a 1:30 tee time and would you like lunch or sandwiches after golf. She asked if we could hit a few balls before and I said yes, that would be me picking you up at 11:45 and noon lunch and range time or I pick at 12:45. She laughed and said, so I really get a choice? I said absolutely, I blocked my schedule. Then she said Mike, I'm actually nervous about being in the country club atmosphere. Beth it's not that bad, just much better conditions. Weather it is lunch or dinner it's on the patio and I get us a quiet, out of the way table. She was quiet for a second and said if you are free can we please do lunch? I said lunch will definitely work. Then I asked, so you going to give me a hint as to how well you play? She said Mike, I can play but is there a chance it won't be a competition? I said well I can play as well and we don't even have to keep score. She said, ok I'll keep my own card. Beth, it won't get to that but a fun round. Then I said have a great night and I'll see you tomorrow.

I had just put the phone down and Cole came in clearly pissed. He said MJ, if you think for one minute a piece of ass is going to distract me on the course you are out of your fucking mind. Cole, my job as big brother is to remind you to stay focused and not to do anything stupid. To be honest you having here up there is not the smartest move when you can have sex with her all night Saturday. Ok, how the fuck will that happen? Well the rents are staying overnight at some place called Mountain View. When the fuck did you find out about that? Cole, late this morning, so cut the shit and sit the fuck down. Look if it was me, I would let Liam do his thing and have Michel over Saturday. Things like this have a way of getting out and reputations get developed. Cole, with big time athletes image matters and fuck you are 15 with a lot of talent. MJ, let me see if I can change things up, thanks. So when are you looking for a car? I'm done and dad is fucking pissed it is a 1991 Mercedes 500SL convertible and it is slate grey. Fuck even mom backed me on this. I laughed saying that will get attention in the student parking lot. Cole one more thing, don't press to shoot a low score and listen to Liam. MJ just stop, I'm in a great place and won't fuck this up. Oh, the car gets delivered on my birthday. He stood up said good night but stopped at the door and said thanks bro and closed the door. I yelled DUDE and he stuck his head in and I said 6:30? He smiled and closed the door.

It was a great morning and I started downstairs and almost tripped over the remote helicopter. There was a note that read: "Fly this and lay off me, well just a little, thanks". I just went downstairs and Cole was waiting and I said, dude I don't fly remote shit. He said let's go and we were off and JJ joined us. I told JJ about Saturday night and Jim and he said it's about fucking time. I showered and dressed in golf pants and a South Hills golf shirt. At the office it was an hour with Riley. She handed me a statement to review for the groundbreaking, which I set aside. As we were finishing I asked about the Cabin and she said she need to think about it. I managed to get a coffee refill and it was time for Dillon and he was right on time. I said Dillon, how disorganized are we here and he just laughed. I asked if we could fix it at the new building? He said yes, if we keep the Strip location and simply move the GE people there. Then he said Mike, ask Jack about that as he already has a great read on things. Dillon I would like to get a list of our various components and the number of employees involved in each. He laughed and handed me a folder and said Mike, I told you Kyle and I were working on this. Dillon, furniture and computers are ordered and we need to get on the same page or it's a disaster. We will be moving in as the floors become available. The first move, I'm thinking is the NASA people which is the Strip district and immediately move the GE people in there.

Dillon was quiet for a while and said, it would be a good idea to form a committee to deal with this. I said so who would you suggest be on this committee? He said Allen from the NASA group. I said Allen Clarkson and he said yes. Then he continued, you, me Jack and Kyle. Then it should be weekly meetings. I said that works, just add Riley as she is working with the furniture people. There were a few other issues and it was now 11:00 and time for me to get going. I grabbed the folder Dillon had given me, chatted with Ruth and drove to meet Beth. It was a warm day and I had the roof down and it was an uneventful drive. I pulled into the driveway and knocked on the door and Beth appeared in a very nice golf outfit. I looked and said if that outfit is any indication of how well you play, I'm toast. I grabbed he clubs and opened the trunk and she asked, so where are your clubs? I said well at the club, I hope. She just looked at me and we got in the car and it was off to the club.

With the roof down it was a quiet ride. We dropped her clubs off and they were immediately put in a cart with my clubs. There was a tip for all that and we parked, put the roof up and went inside. The manager, Mike, came up and said Good Afternoon Mr. Simmons the table you requested is ready and Jake will be your server. I introduced Beth and we were escorted to the patio. The table was in the corner but by the railing with a great view of the course. I told Beth that I would, if she didn't mind have a beer and that I would order iced tea and a beer would come. I told her that it would be only one and that 4 hours later when I drove her home it would not be an issue. I explained if she wanted wine to order a sprite. She said damn Mike, you lease a complicated life. I smiled and said but the bill will reflect iced tea, if anyone ever checked. Jake came over and I introduced Beth and ordered an iced tea and Beth said, I'll have what Mike's having. I just nodded and Jack left the menus and went for the drinks. I asked, so Beth what do you think of the place? She said old and bit stuffy but the patio is nice and everything is in perfect condition. I asked about her Brother Wes and was told he would a Junior Penn State and was studying engineering. We talked about school and she said she Runs Country and will golf every time she gets a chance. She asked about me and I said that I ran 6 days a week, worked out 5 days a week and was working at my dads company. Beth just smiled and didn't say anything

The drinks came and she ordered a Monte Christo sandwich and I ordered the chicken salad with house dressing. I asked who she play golf with and she said mostly dad and Wes, but she had a couple of friends that played and at various public courses and this was a real treat. Jake came back and asked if we needed anything and Beth said she was fine and I asked if he would please get us a scorecard. Again Beth just looked and didn't say anything. I handed her the card and she spent a few minutes looking over it and then asked, which tees do you usually play? I said white or the Tips. She looked at the card again and said well looking at the yardage, if you want we can both play the white tees. I said that it was her choice and I would gladly play the white tees. So Beth, I asked, what tees do you play at Cedarbrook? She said well on the Gold course I play the blue tees and on the Red course I play the black tees. I thought damn. I took a look at her and thought 5' 10" and about 125/130. Brown hair long but pulled into a pony tail, smallish tits and an ass to die for. The food came and I mentally redressed her. I sensed that she was starting to ask something and then she said ok, a salad? I would have bet it would have been burger and fries. I laughed and said well I would never thought you would never order that sloppy cheese thing and we both laughed. As we were eating, she said Mike, I know you are holding back on telling me things, for example that you are working this summer for your dad's company. I watch, TV and I read the papers so you can relax. Beth please understand, the last three girls I dated ended because of my money. She laughed and said well not Jan, all she wanted was pictures form the Prom with a stud and I'm guessing you needed a babe for the same reason. Then she said, I've always liked you and you are different but I will never be a babe hanging on your arm. I reached over took her hand and said, dam this just got much better.

We finished eating and I asked if she needed anything else? She said no and we started to the Pro Shop. I checked in grabbed two bags of balls and we drove to the range. She laughed and said this is fun, I don't usually get to warm up and I carry my bags to the cart. I asked if she would rather walk and have a caddie and she said possibly if I get to do this again. I said well, I would rather ride as I was up early and spent the morning in the office. I was more watching here hit balls and damn she has a nice swing and was hitting it a lot farther than I thought she would. We had about 15 minutes before our tee time and I suggested that we go to the green and putt some. At the green she dropped a ball and started to laugh as she had to walk 10 feet to get it. I said, never above the hole and she replied, I see that. We moved to the tee and like Cole she had a pre-shot routine and drilled it right down the middle. I hit a really good shot with my typical draw and was 30 yards past her. We figured out her yardage and she took out a hybrid and put it left center on the green and I felt bad hitting a 7 iron and it was on the back edge of the green and when we got in the cart she said holy shit your shot backed up about 30 feet. I laughed and said, I'm lucky it's still on the green.

The round continued with both of us playing well and when we got to the 11th tee, I asked if she needed anything and while she was considering her options I ordered an Arnold Palmer and she asked what that was and I said half tea and half lemonade. She said oh, I'll have that as well. When we were finished, she shot 79 and I had 74. I laughed and said if you had played the woman's tees you would have smoked my ass. She said I never play those tees. We went to the patio and grabbed the same table and I went inside and asked for chips and pretzels and two Arnold Palmer's and went back outside. I sat down and asked how does your brother and dad play? She said well not quite as good as you but close. Mike, you have downplayed your self all day and I get that. I said because, I am and want to be a high school kid. She laughed out loud and said well you were a high school kid in junior high, that ship has sailed. Beth, I take relationships slow, I need to grow into these things. Mike, so do I and that's why I appreciate this day and the way you are so polite and yet firmly in control. So who is the member here, you or your dad? I said both of us is that important? She said well yes and no. I almost said something, I would have regretted but asked why is that important? Well this cost a shit load of money and it matters to me whose money you are throwing around. I said Beth, I pay my own way and have an allowance from my trust. I spend money carefully and always on people I like and who are important to me and on flying lessons. We finished our drinks and grabbed her clubs and she laughed and said, damn they cleaned them. We drove home with the roof down and when we pulled into the driveway this guy ran out and said hi Mike, I'm Wes. I said glad to meet you and he turned to Beth and asked, was it as awesome as you thought? She said well don't be an ass and at least let me get inside. Wes grabbed the clubs from the trunk and said, nice ride dude and he went inside, taking her clubs with him. Once we were alone, I grabbed both her hands and said, Beth this was a fun day for me, thanks and she leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. I held her and gave her a nice polite kiss and all of a sudden her tongue was in my mouth and the kiss got more intense. I looked at her and said, so I'm guessing it's ok if I call you again? She smiled and said well that appears to be mutual. I said, I'll call tonight and drove home.

At home the gang was all there and Cole had burgers, corn and potatoes all on the grill and I thought that was fantastic but knew I was cleaning up. The discussion at dinner was a mixture of various activities during our day. Megan was starting here first trial, Cole had a long lesson and was done for the week. Dad was quiet and that worried me as it indicated he was up to something. I simply said I had a productive morning and a fun relaxing afternoon at the club and a fun round of golf. To my surprise dad helped me clean up and we were talking about things. He was looking forward to the ground breaking and asked about the change in the building. I said well it's a good idea and it covered a mistake. Two floors of glass on the top were too much, I'm pissed about the mistake and at my self for not seeing it myself earlier. Mike, just relax and that's the first mistake you might have made, personally I think this will eventually fall back to Carrie, the question is was it a mistake or something else? Then he asked, so how was the first date with the new girl? I said dad, it was awesome. We played from the white tees and she broke 80.

Upstairs, I called the Major and asked about the groundbreaking ceremony and he said up scale and it's costing you a bunch. If you actually work the people there it could be worth every penny. I laughed and said well I'll do that and you deal with the media. Mike, I'll round them up but they need you, remember this is an Enterprise project and Technologies is there for show. I said, thanks for the reminder. So are we still on for Friday? He said yes, wheels up by 8. I said fine I'll be there by 7. Same plane? He said yes and added IFR rules as you will need to learn that shit in any event. I deal with the towers going out but you have it all coming back. Now good night and I'll see you in the morning.

I decided to call Beth before it got too late and she answered right away. I asked if her nerves had settled down and she said, please put the guy on, I played golf with today and I laughed. I said well seriously I had a fun relaxing day today. We chatted for a while and I asked if she was free Sunday? She said all day, what about you? I said all day as I am swamped tomorrow and Friday is with Cole at Latrobe and half a day at work on Saturday and the guys in the evening. She asked, is your schedule always like that and I replied, mostly. She asked, could we play golf again, that was so much fun. I said sure would Wes want to play? She said well if it's South Hills sure. I said it won't be but he will love it, I'll ask JJ as well. Oh Beth, we will be walking with Caddies. She said OMG another first. I laughed and said you have no idea. I called Oakmont and asked about tee times for Sunday and asked for 10:30 and if Liam was available to caddy. I was told yes and they would check with him to make sure and I then asked for him to select the other Caddy. There was a few minutes of silence and the head Pro got on saying Mike there are a few members who would like a round with you and to be honest they are all heavy hitters, would you please accommodate them. I said sure as long as I can clean my schedule. Well how does noon on Wednesday work? I thought for a minute and said sure. I hung up and now I was stressed.

Cole came in and he said he was running but that he would be done for the week. I said well it looks like the same thing for me. He said I'll see you at 6:30. I got up showered and jumped into bed tired and happy.
