I actually slept late and took a hot shower and started downstairs but found a package on the floor. I opened the package and it was a book Hunt for the Red October by Clancy. There was a note from dad "Mike you read the second and third books, here is the first one. Enjoy!" Dad. I tossed it on the bed and went to the kitchen and made eggs and toast, juice and naturally coffee. This was going to be a really boring day. I called Tim and we talked about the building and I asked if someone from the architect's office, hopefully this afternoon. I want to work on building sketches. Tim reminded me I was grounded for 48 hours and I said dude it is either the architect or I'm having Carrie over. Mike, I'll get someone over from the architect office and I'll let you know when. I thanked him and hung up.

I wondered around the house, being bored. Then I threw a jacket on and went to the apartment, knocked and when Ryan opened the door he said so Mike you collecting one of the bets I owe you. I laughed and said dude I'm grounded, there was a minor setback yesterday, apparently you were too much for me yesterday. I sat on the sofa and told him that I lied to dad and told him we had a long talk about your semester break and college life in general. That's just a heads up in case he mentions it. Ryan said thanks. What else is on your mind? I said Ryan, I'm just checking to see if yesterday fucked thing up, I'm hoping not. He replied Mike I'm good. Now what's the real reason you came up here? Well Ryan I'm trying to figure out my need to have sex with a dude. Mike, why you asking me? Well Ryan, I need to talk to someone and you are a guy with some experience and you are the dude I needed to fuck yesterday. We both know those three bets were not bets at all but an excuse for me to get you naked. On one level it wasn't planned and on another it was. I'm fucking confused.

Ryan thought for a while and asked, Mike what's more fun for you fucking Carrie or fucking me? Now it was my turn to think and Ryan was patient and just sat waiting for an answer. I finally said Ryan it is different sex. Ryan took a deep breath and said Mike, answer the damn question. I thought for a second and said Carrie. Ok, Mike what do you get out of sex with dudes? Ryan, I just like sex and sometimes kinky sex and that's easier to do with guys. Mike do you care about the dudes you fuck? Ryan, I do care about you guys, your all friends and I respect each of you and you are involved in my life, it just isn't emotional for me. So Mike, if the dudes don't keep up with you just move them out of your circle. Ryan, that's true in Ray's case, but so far he is the only one. However, Ray simply quit and doesn't even try. Ok Mike, you seem to control everything and everyone around you, do you ever get beat? I thought for a second and said rarely. Mike who was the last guy to beat you at something and I answered Jim. Ryan laughed and said you and him should get shit faced drunk and have this same discussion with him. I laughed and said Ryan you are the second person to say that exact same thing, but why Jim. Mike, you two have each other's back and you both need each other. I will even bet that you don't ever give him a break and yet he managed to push you to the limit and beats you more than you actually like. I thought for a minute and said, Ryan we have many more talks like this and you and I are going to get along great. Thanks! Ryan stood up as I was getting up and pushed me back on my ass, saying not so fast asshole.

I was stunned, but sat there looking at him. He said, Mike don't ever do that again. DO WHAT, I screamed? Interrupt my morning, have a talk with me centered around your fucking needs and then dismiss me out of hand. You treat me as a project and I am much more than your play thing. I'm smart, work every bit as hard as you and I'm competitive - just like you. Well except for the athletics, which I don't give a fuck about. I appreciate all you have had your dad do for me, I know you are behind all that, but seriously dude you don't own my ass. I took this job because I needed the fucking money and it is just that a job. Then things got tougher and you bailed me out, I like you a lot not for the sex or how fucking hot you are, or how ripped you are but for how fucking tough you are yet caring. You are a fucking puzzle and I love puzzles. I just looked at him and said dude, I knew all that. Mike, there you go again having the last fucking word. Why? I looked at him and said Ryan because I can. Because that first night during the interview I saw you as a smart struggling dude with potential up the ass. Remember I had Brian check you out? Well that confirmed things for me. You are not a project for me but yes you are someone that I like and respect that I'm hoping will be a partner helping me achieve my goals. Yes, I am dismissive and I'm working on being less so with the people in my life that I like, love and respect. I hope that's acceptable? Then I said Ryan, you me and Jim need to hang out some in a non sexual manner, well until the two of us are 18. Now it was his turn to be stunned. I stood up and said Ryan is it ok if I leave now? He got up shook my hand and I grabbed him into a hug and whispered in his ear, dude I hope those puzzle pieces help you figure me out. I pulled back looked him in the eye and said, asshole you might not know it but you are the third musketeer, if you want to be. Then I said Ryan this is and should be a work in progress but basically it's your call.

Back in the house, I made coffee and started on the book and damn I hope this guy writes a ton of books. I was a hundred pages or so into the book when my phone rang and Tim said Mike, you and I are building a reputation. When I called the architects they are dropping everything and the firm principal and two associates will be there at 1:30, would you like me to be there? Tim you are welcome if you are free. Mike I'll be there I love watching you deal with these type of people. Tim, I said, I'm not always like that and he laughed. I grabbed my jacket and went back to the apartment, knocked on the door and Ryan opened it and I know he was thinking now what the fuck. I sat on the sofa and said Ryan I'm starting a project and would like to hire you to help. It is a one day thing, for now, and I'll pay $100 an hour. Mike what's up?

Ryan, this is really complicated and dad is totally involved. Here are the cliff notes. I have a Trust fund with a lot of money in it. In addition is controlling interest in MJS Technologies. The Trust bought a plot of land and the Trust is building a building to lease to the company. Now I know there is a lot of questions and I'll get to them but the architect is coming at 1:30 to develop plans and I would like you to simply observe and to take notes but keep track of the costs. I can do higher math in my sleep but I have no sense for accounting and costs and I tend to say just do it. I don't know these people and I could very well fire them but you will meet Tim my attorney and the guy with final say on Trust issues for ten more months. Dress is business casual in fact jeans and a polo shirt will be fine. I'm deciding on Punk jock or stupid teen or relaxed wealthy jerk. He laughed and said dude just be Mike that way they will have a clue on how to design the building. Ryan, that's a great idea, I need to get going can you be down around 1:15. He said sure.

I showered, shaved and dressed in the Jack Kennedy look wondering if they would even get that, put coffee on and started reading the book. Ryan and Tim arrived almost at the same time, I introduce Tim as my attorney and Ryan as my accounting expert and Tim just shook his head. I put them in dad's office so they could talk. I was hoping they would be a good match. At 1:25 the door bell rand and there were two guys, one older and one young and a woman in what I thought was around 30 years old. The older guy introduced himself a Mark Haiden, and the others a Logan and Jodi. I said Mark, Logan and Jodie please call me Mike and if you don't mind can we start in the kitchen it has the biggest work area. Would anyone like something to drink and they all declined. I excused myself found Ryan and Tim chatting nicely in the office and introduced them as Tim, my attorney and Ryan my numbers guy. Then I got a cup of coffee and asked again about drinks and Logan and Jodie asked for water.

Once we were settled Mark started with questions such as budget and building size. Tim immediately jumped in and said the lot is an acre on the Mon River and just off second avenue. Mark, said damn how did you pull that off it was a very hot piece of real estate. I said with cash and smiled at the reaction, but Ryan was stoic. Then I said the major tenant is MJS Technologies and I want a building that is appropriate in size for the land and parking yet to stand out in an understated way and I would like to see no bricks or stones. The area was a mill once owned by Andrew Carnegie and I want it to represent what Carnegie, Pitcarin and Ford did for this city. Mark said Mike can you and your team excuse us for a few minutes, I replied sure we will be in dad's office, come get us when you are ready. Once in the office Ryan said ok Mike I get Carnegie and that might be a bit overstated but which Ford and who is Pitcarin. I laughed and said think US Steel and PPG industries. Basically in a very different way I told them I want steel and glass and both Tim and Ryan just laughed. They are busy figuring out the glass people, I'm betting. Then I asked so guys what do you think. Tim said they are listening and Ryan said Mike you scare them. I said well what I wanted to know is what you think about each and in unison they said a work in progress and I laughed. Guys was that rehearsed? A few minutes later Logan knocked on the door and said Mike can you and I talk for a minute. I said sure, have a seat. The other two left and Logan said Mr. Simmons and I stopped him and said Mr. Simmons is my dad I'm Mike and if we are working together it will always be Mike. He said Mike, we all get steel and glass, why not just say it that way? Logan it was a test to see which of the three of you knew the answer, welcome to my team - will that work for your people, you running the show that is? He laughed and said I bet they will be pisses as I was selected because I was the closest in age to you. I said Logan was that a polite way of saying that this young spoiled jock with too much money will be difficult and have no idea what he is doing. Logan simply shook his head and said let's get back to work.

We all sat down I said ok guys let's get a few things straight. Yes, I an a very young, rich a somewhat spoiled jock, however I own the land and have controlling interests in MJS Technologies and I am anything but stupid. Logan here will be the lead on this project and Jodie we will see what you become. Mike as for you and the firm, thanks for bringing Logan along and I expect you to make sure he knows what the fuck he is doing. I know dad and MJS hired you and I respect that decision. Understand however all decisions going forward will be joint decisions between me and dad, unless of course I, meaning the Trust, out vote him. Now let's talk about a steel and glass building and get this is fast tracked. I want my graduation party in the lobby of this building. Then I said Tim and Ryan you are in charge and I got up and went to my room and started reading. At about 4:00 Ryan knocked on my door and said Mr. Big Shot the minions need you in the kitchen and I laughed.

Back in the kitchen there was a very rough drawing of a building and paper all over the place. I looked at the drawing and thought fuck these guys are good. I said this close but just not quite. However, I like the fact that you included Mr. Hall and Alcoa in the design, I forgot about them and they did construct the first skyscraper right here in Pittsburgh. Logan just burst out laughing and the others just looked. Then I said on the top floor where the two corner offices would normally be located I want an open area no roof just an open room for outside seating. What would solar panels on the roof do to the cost? Mark said what and why? I said you know they provide energy and it is state of the art. The building could be totally energy independent. He took a big breath and said Mike that is new technology and - I stopped him and said Logan your thoughts? Mike, Mark is right but we'll will look into it both as a practical solution and as a cost. Besides this is not a cheap project. I looked at Ryan and said any estimates that you guys came up with and he said between 15 and 20. I looked at Tim and asked is this doable and he said Mike not here and not now, we will talk later. I thanked everyone for being there and for the outstanding job, asked that the drawings be left and was shocked out of my shoes to see a new corner sketch of the building. I said Jodie can I see you in the office for a few minutes.

Once in the office, I said Jodie, I know why Logan was put on this team why were you put on the team? She said Mike, I'm good and very fast make very few mistakes and run the design department. I said you and Logan are running this, you good with that and she said absolutely. Just so you know Logan and I are dating. I said great, I don't care just don't mess this up, so far I'm impressed. Then she said Mike if Mark had you alone he would most likely strangle you. Then I said Jodie, I don't care, if you and Logan pull this off I'll have you in a position to start your own firm. Thanks.

Then I asked Tim to please have Mark join me here for a moment. Mark came in looking tense and I asked him to have a seat. I said Mark, thanks for clearing you schedule to meet with this demanding young punk and for assembling on the fly a great team. I would like Logan as the lead because he is smart and pretty forward thinking and I want a building that reflects what I believe. Technology is the next thing this city needs and we have the best universities in the country right here. We have to keep that talent local. While MJS will be the major tenant I want room to lease space to startups and yet grow MJS into a major player. Please have your firm do some research on MJS and learn about us. Today I mentioned a lot of giants in the past Industrial Age that made this city and Western Pa what it is today. I want my name added to that list, can your firm help me do that? Then he said, Mike I never considered you a young punk, you dismissed the largest real estate company in the area out of had in a very firm and professional manner, from what I hear. For all practical purposes you moved right in from out of nowhere and practically stole that acre of land for what 1.1 million. You already have a name and a reputation. Logan is very good as you noticed and at the end of the year he will be a partner in the firm, I'm not loosing him. With that we both stood up shook hands and went back to the kitchen. I asked for updates on a regular basis and said I never wanted to have to ask where things stood.

When they left Tim said Mike let's talk and the bean counter should join us. I saw Ryan say something to Tim and I stopped and said no secrets, Ryan what did you just say to Tim? Mike I told him never to call me a bean counter again. I made no comment and turned to business. So Tim can we deal with 15 to 20 and he said Mike with a lease and the land as a down payment yes. But it is a hell of a risk. Another lease will help, I asked? He said yes. Tim, I need to know how much room the company needs and what the projected growth will be. Also, talk to the zoning people and see how big a building we can build. Finally, I want to meet with the mayor just you and me. Tim said, Mike what the fuck for? I want him to know who the fuck I am and to ask what he can do to move this along without the city red tape. That meeting is just you and me and his people. Please ask Mr. Flaherty nicely for an hour of his time late some afternoon. Ryan start looking into mortgage rates and this will be one hell of an internship for you. Please submit on an weekly basis your hours and work responsibly. You good with the 100 an hour? Oh and I don't want to see more that 20 hours a week on this, ok? Sure mike. I thanked them and said you two stay in touch and don't over bill me, I'm suddenly concerned about money and they laughed.

I went back to my room exhausted and fell asleep. Dad finally woke me up saying I was glad to see you relaxing in your room until I saw the drawings. Just so you know I called Tim and asked what went on today and he said I needed to talk with his client directly. Mike you hungry? I said starving and he said let's go get a bite and talk. Dad, let's just go to the club. He said Mike you having a relapse and I said dad the fucking place is close and The Tavern will be a zoo for me, it's like you at the club. Besides I have enough clout there now to get a quiet table bring the drawings and let's go. We got to the club and the manager said wow both Mr. Simmons it is a pleasure. I thanked him and nodded and he said certainly a nice quiet table I have the perfect one and dad just laughed. We sat down and dad said Mike do I need a new club, you seem to have more influence here than me. I said dad don't get carried away as I won't be a member here long I'm thinking Oakmont. As dad was looking at the drawings when Jack came over I ordered iced teas and dad said I'll have the same. I was hoping iced tea came but it was scotch. I filled him in on most of the meeting and we looked at the drawings and he said dude steel glass and aluminum, did you forget something tied to the city and I said no, the riverside of the building will have a fountain. Why Mike when the fucking river floods there will be all the water you want and we both laughed. Dad, are you ok the building drawings. Mike, yes but how you paying for all this? Dad Tim and Ryan and I are working on that. He said Ryan, how is he in this? Dad is a first semester junior at Pitt. He one of the tops students students in his major and he counts beans very well. Ok Mike he works for you? I said dad that's correct.

After dinner I read for a while and called Carrie. I told her I was once again grounded but I'm hoping you can visit Thursday. Mike I would like to do that. We talked about school and I was dreadfully behind in everything except for the English paper. She said that no one was talking about football, this state tournament doesn't mean as much. We clatter a little longer and I said babe I love you and she Mike, listen to the doctors and get some rest, I'll see you Thursday, I love you.
